B “Enjoy the little things in life, for one day you’ll look back and realize they were the big things.” This has stuck with me since the first time I read it. And it just makes so much sense. Just the other day I caught a cold. The flu really made me mad and made me feel so weak and just sleepy. You all know how flu can be driving. I woke up with a weak body. How I wished it was a weekend already but it wasMonday and I had to go to work. I dragged myself out of bed and made it to work. We have a care taker at work. We call her dada Lucy, who usually prepares some nice lunch for us. She noticed I was not okay and she was sorry for me. As I was on my desk, dada Lucy came with some cough syrup (糖浆) to ease my throat. I was so moved by her kind gesture and thoughtfulness. The thought of all this just got straight to my heart. I felt so good, I felt loved, I felt visible and it was a huge relief. And I believe it’s the collection of these small kind gestures, and these little things as we may call them that make life worth living. It’s days like these that remind us of the power of the little things that most of the time go unnoticed. It’s these days remind us that there are still good and kind people out there who always find ways to brighten up others, to lift them up and put a smile on their faces. And I believe we all can be like that. I believe every human being has that soft side to share with the world. 24. What happened to the author on Monday to work? A. He didn’t prepare his lunch. B. We must know what kind of life is worth living. B. Going to work demands great efforts. C. Not all people are worth making friends with. D. Small acts may make a big difference. 27. What emotion does the author write the article with? A. Thankfulness. B. Regret. C. Encouragement. D. Sadness. C Experts believe that earthquakes may become more closer and stronger together as a result of climate change. The melting of glaciers is speeding up due to global warming. The land that was beneath the melted glacier water rises when it runs off land and into the sea. One of the most mysterious (神秘的) and terrible natural disasters is the earthquake. While experts can prepare when the major ones will strike, smaller ones can strike seemingly at any time, affecting entire cities and causing smaller disasters like fires, landslides and tsunamis. An upcoming rise in sea level along with glacier melting may make future earthquakes more frequent, according to John Cassidy, a seismologist. The risk of earthquakes caused by glacial retreat (后 退) is less than that of which may be related to rising sea levels. Increase in sea level results in an increase in underwater pressure on the seabed and therefore on the fault (断层) lines near the shore. According to researchers, many earthquakes that are expected to occur soon near San Francisco and Los Angeles still have late earthquake cycles. The pause in sea level rise could take up to a thousand years, even in the event that we immediately ceased using greenhouse gases. There is no quick fix, however. Because we have been worsening the environment for many decades, it will take many years of efforts to solve it.Cassidy stressed that the effects of climate change will increase their risk when earthquakes occur. As sea levels rise, earthquake-caused tsunamis will spread farther inland. Increased rainfall brought on by warmer waters will enhance the possibility of landslides caused by earthquakes. “It’s an important topic, and one that I’m sure we’ll see a lot of information coming out on in the coming months and years if we continue our climate warming,” he said. 28. What is the result of glacier melting according to paragraph 1? A. New glaciers will appear. B. Climate change comes to an end. C. The land beneath is going up. D. There will be fewer fires occurring. 29. What factor might contribute more to earthquake frequency according to John Cassidy? A. Glaciers’ retreat. B. Underground water movement. C. Increased rainfall. D. Rising sea levels. 30. What does the underlined phrase “quick fix” in paragraph 4 probably mean? A. Good result. B. Easy solution. C. Big decision. D. Perfect reason. 31. What is John Cassidy’s attitude to the earthquakes in the future? A. Unclear. B. Uninterested. C. Concerned. D. Doubtful. D Previous research has shown that the Mediterranean (地中海的) diet offers a range of health benefits, from improved heart health to reduced risk of certain cancers. However, the new findings suggest the other aspect. The study, conducted by a team of researchers from Binghamton University in New York, surveyed over 1,500 adults about their eating habits and measured their levels of perceived (感知到的) stress and mental suffering. Through analyzing a collection of information shown in numbers, the researchers found that people who consumed more items in the typical Mediterranean diet, such as whole grains, seafood, fruits, vegetables and beans, tended to report lower levels of perceived stress and mental suffering. In contrast, the researchers found that people who ate more foods typical of the Western diet, like fast food and high glycemic index (血糖指数) foods, tended to report higher levels of perceived stress and mental suffering. Interestingly, the team also observed a negative connection between eating meat and stress/ suffering levels, despite meat being more related to the Western dietary pattern. The researchers believe this could be because the Mediterranean diet provides a wide range of beneficial things that support brain function and regulate the body’s stress response system. For example, the healthy fats in the diet may help reduce inflammation, which has been linked to higher stress and poorer mental well-being. Diet is just one piece of the stress management puzzle, but this new research suggests it could be an important one, offering a simple, accessible way for people to potentially improve their mental health and stress resistance. So, if you’re feeling too stressed, it may be worth trying to add more Mediterranean-style foods into your diet. Replacing processed snacks with fruits and vegetables, choosing whole grains instead of refined (精制的) ones, and using olive oil instead of butter are all easy ways to start moving in a healthier direction. 32. What aspect of the Mediterranean diet is previous research related to? A. Its ways of cooking. B. Its physical health effect. C. Its easily being absorbed. D. Its mental health advantage.33. How did researchers from Binghamton University draw their conclusion? A. By doing worldwide surveys. B. By analyzing reasons. C. By comparing the data. D. By referring to other studies. 34. What is paragraph 4 mainly about? A. The benefits of the Mediterranean diet on mental health and stress relief. B. The advice on how to choose Mediterranean-style foods. C. The connections between fats and health. D. The study focusing on healthy foods. 35. Which food is typically included in the Mediterranean diet according to the text? A. Seafood. B. Potato chips. C. Refined beef. D. Roast chicken. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 After a long vacation from school, it’s often difficult to get back into the study routine. His family was not rich, and his parents worked long hours each day to provide for their basic needs. Every day, Peter watched his parents return home tired. They loved him deeply, but they hardly had enough extra money for toys or new clothes. Children’s Day celebration was an annual event at school, eagerly anticipated (盼望) by Peter’s classmates. They would arrive with shiny new toys, colorful clothes, and delicious snacks, chatting excitedly about their gifts. Peter, on the other hand, would come to school empty-handed. As he stood quietly in the corner, his heart ached with a deep sense of longing and loneliness, though he never let his parents know. He understood their struggles, but the the classmates’ displays made him feel left out and, at times, ashamed. Some of the less considerate children did not notice Peter’s feelings and continued to discuss their gifts. Years passing, Peter grew into a hardworking and independent young man. And he was determined to build a better life for himself and his family. He took on various jobs, from delivering groceries to working late nights at a small shop, saving every bit of money he could. Through his efforts, Peter became self-sufficient, able to support not only himself but also contribute to his parents’ household. However, he never forgot his desire for things like toys when he was a child. His kind and generous nature led him to volunteer at a local orphanage (孤儿院), a place filled withchildren who had hardly known the joy of receiving gifts on Children’s Day. Seeing the children’s wide eyes and big smiles as they played with worn-out toys reminded him of his own childhood. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150个左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Determined to make a difference, Peter started planning a special celebration for the upcoming Children’s Day. He spent weeks preparing, using the money he had saved from his various jobs to buy toys, clothes and snacks. He also reached out to his friends and the community, asking them to contribute anything they could to make the Children’s Day of children in orphanage special. As the day drew closer, Peter decorated the orphanage with colorful balloons, wanting to create a joyful atmosphere that the children would remember for years to come. When Children’s Day finally arrived, the orphanage was filled with laughter and cheers as the children played games, enjoyed delicious treats, and experienced the warmth of a celebration for the first time. After the celebration, Peter brought out carefully wrapped gifts. The children’s eyes lit up with joy as he handed each of them a present. Watching the happiness on their faces, Peter felt a deep sense of fulfilment. He had transformed his childhood feeling into an opportunity to bring joy to others. As he looked around at the smiling faces, he realized that this was not just a gift for the children, but also a healing moment for himself. Peter knewthat this would be the first one of many Children’s Day celebrations he would organize, ensuring that no child in the orphanage would ever feel left out again.
