What do you do with your clothes that you don’t want to wear anymore? Through cutting, stitching(缝)and
redesigning. Baxter Salzwedel has found a fashionable way to be sustainnble(可持续的).
In March, recycling clothes earned the 17-year-old from Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah High School in Wisconsin,
US, a finalist spot in the Young Entrepreneurs competition. The competition was hosted by Junior Achievement of
Wisconsin, a non-profit organization. He won a scholarship of $10, 000 for his sustainable clothing brand The Mad
Patcher.
In the beginning. Salzwedel just worked with clothes for fun. He learned his sewing skills at a young age from
his grandmother. He then started to tear up his old jeans to try and create cool new designs. The fun hobby quickly
turned into a business for Salzwedel when his friends and classmates started asking him to make customized
clothing for them.
“So many people wanted them that I wasn’t going to make 150 pairs of pants for free, so that was when 1 had
to start making a business out of it, ” Salzwedel told the Sheboygan Press.
In 2021, Salzwedel started his clothing brand. He uses colourful and patterned fabrics(布 料) from other
clothes to create his patchwork(拼接) designs, like jeans, shirts and jackets. He only uses donated or recycled
materials to ensure maximum sustainability.
Salzwedel has earned thousands of dollars through selling his clothes, and he donated 25 percent of his profits
to non-profit organizations.

with similar ideas. ” The teenager planned to use the prize to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology in New

A new study led by researchers at the University of California, Riverside, has found exposure to third-hand
smoke (THS) causes skin diseases.
The study — the first to look at humans exposed to THS — involved 10 healthy non-smokers wearing
clothing with either filtered (过滤的) air or THS chemicals. The investigation lasted three hours, during which
participants would either walk or run for 15 minutes per hour — this would make them sweat and increase the
levels of THS potentially taken in through the skin. Blood samples were collected, which were measured to see
whether THS may have caused cell or tissue damage.
“We found THS exposure caused damage to DNA, lipids (脂质), and proteins, and the damage remained
even after the exposure stopped,” said Shane Sakamaki-Ching, a doctor of biology and the first author of the study.
“Cigarette smokers show the same result.” The study showed exposure to THS increases signals related with skin
diseases, which makes sense: the organ most likely to come into contact with THS is your skin, and so it receives
the biggest exposure to the harmful chemicals. “However, what’s even more worrying is the tendency to lead to
cancer,” added Sakamaki-Ching.
“If you buy a used car previously owned by a smoker, you are putting yourself at some health risk,” said
Prue Talbot, a professor of cell biology at UC Riverside and the corresponding author of the study. “If you go to a
restaurant that allows smoking, you are exposing your skin to THS. The same applies to staying in a hotel room that
was previously occupied by a smoker.”
All that came from just three hours’ investigation. And if you think e-cigarette smokers are being forgotten,
fear not: the team’s next project is to take a look at which remains are left by these less-deadly death sticks.
Sakamaki-Ching said, “Our findings can help physicians in checking patients exposed to THS and help
develop policies improving indoor environments polluted by THS.”
28.Why were the participants in the study asked to take exercise?
A.To keep themselves energetic. B.To speed up blood production.
C.To do away with THS by sweating. D.To have their skin absorb more THS.
29.What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A.THS is likely to cause skin cancer.
B.Cigarette smokers suffer more from THS.
C.The tendency to lead to cancer worries smokers.
D.The damage caused by THS remains until the exposure stops.
30.What message does Prue Talbot want to convey in paragraph 4?公众号:黑洞视角
A.Public places should ban smoking entirely.
B.THS can be widely found in our daily life.
C.Non-smokers must keep off smokers for health.
D.Sharing is a bad habit and should be abandoned.
31.Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
A.Ways to Prevent Skin Diseases Worsening
B.A Campaign to Be Proposed to Ban THS
C.THS Can Cause Skin Diseases
D.New Study Reveals the Potential Harm of Smoking

A colleague recently sent me an article, Cutting back on waste is possible — if you can afford it, to read. It
argued that reducing waste-food related, in particular — is an expensive effort and a near impossibility for anyone
working low-wage jobs with little extra time. The conclusion ? Zero waste is something only suitable for people
who can afford, not for those who are struggling to get by.
However, I take issue with the idea that zero waste must be all or nothing. I think this is an unfortunate
mentality that prevents valuable progress toward reducing one’s food-related waste. When we get too hung up on
the idea of so-called zero waste and of being like the zero waste superstar Bea Johnson who can fit years of trash in
a single jar, we start missing the broader point. The goal, after all, is to make smarter shopping decisions and
establish practices that are sustainable (可持续的) for us, with our own unique resources and living situations.
I live in a small rural town with no fancy zero-waste stores. My husband and I both work full-time. I am
uninterested in spending my free time doing DIY projects and driving from store to store in search of perfect
packaging. Instead, I just do the best I can.
When I first read about Bea Johnson’s multi-stop grocery shopping routine, I tried to copy it. That lasted a few
weeks before I gave up. Unlike her, I still had babies to look after, and I did not live in San Francisco where stores
are closer together than in rural Ontario, Instead, I’ve resigned myself to the supermarket being the main supply of
food and trying to work with it.
Now, when I enter the supermarket on a once-weekly basis, I view all packaging through a critical eye. I make
constant comparisons between how one brand packages its food to another. That is the main factor in deciding what
to buy, though I also consider the unit price, the origin and the ingredients.
32.What is the idea of the article recommended by the author’s colleague?
A.Most people can afford zero waste.
B.Food-related waste is unavoidable.
C.Cutting down on waste costs much.
D.The poor care little about food waste.
33.How does the author understand the concept of zero waste?
A.It is related to recycling our resources.
B.It prevents people from reducing waste.公众号:黑洞视角
C.It means fitting your trash in a single jar.
D.It encourages reasonable green practices.
34.Why did the author fail to follow Bea Johnson?
A.Her living situations differed from hers.
B.She hardly knew about food packaging.
C.She didn’t receive her husband’s support.
D.Her love for shopping was deeply rooted.
35.What’s the best title of the text?
A.Live in a Small Town for a Zero-waste Life
B.Forget Zero Waste and Be Better Shoppers
C.Take Advantage of Local Zero-waste Shops
D.Stop Wasting and Build a Greener Society

Field trips have now become a popular and well-established method of education. A field trip is a journey
organized by schools or educational institutions to a place outside of the classroom. 36 Therefore, the
activities during a field trip are often designed to provide them with hands-on experiences.
Field trips can be taken to a variety of destinations. The most popular ones include museums, factories, zoos
and botanical gardens. Field trips can also involve visits to historical sites and other places of interest. Sometimes
even an outing to a park nearby can make a good field trip. 37
Field trips help improve academic performance. Participants in a field trip are engaged in various activities
about a subject matter. 38 They could also pick up new knowledge through observation and interaction.
Studies provide evidence that field trips can increase students’ test scores.
39 During a field trip, students are exposed to interactive activities and novel experiences that are
not often available in a classroom, which awakens their interest and helps them rediscover the joy in study. This
may be particularly important for students who are struggling academically.
A field trip can be challenging to organize due to factors such as high costs and safety concerns. 40
Teachers regard this outing as a good way of helping students and developing a good relationship with them.
Students, moreover, may remember the experience of the school field trip as a highlight of the school year.
A.Field trips also promote a love of learning.
B.That is why field trips are in decline in recent years.
C.In this way, they could gain a better understanding of it.
D.It is intended to help students learn in a real-world context.

The Real Champion
I like running and for me, success was winning every race I participated in. My classmates called me
Incredible Dash. One day, there was a sporting event planned in my school. Well-prepared for the running
competition, I took part in almost every race there was. A large number of people gathered to watch. Crowds were
eager to see the running race because it was the most exciting event. When the race for 400m started, all the boys
ran fast. Unsurprisingly, I finished first in the race and received a big round of applause. While it was tiring, I felt
proud and was on top of my world.
In the race for 200m, I ran full speed and finished the race first once again. The crowd gave thundering claps
to me. I jumped all over the ground and was not bothered to give handshakes to my fellow racers.
Then came the race for 100m. Discouraged by the previous races, most boys quit the race except one, a boy
named Matt who was invited as an honorary runner. Matt was born with low vision but he was a determined
participant of many sports. The judge came to Matt and explained the situation, asking whether he would like to
quit too. I, wild with joy, thought I would win the champion without effort. However, to everyone’s surprise, Matt
decided to complete the event. I sniffed (嗤之以鼻), “It is a waste of time. I bet he even doesn’t figure out where
the finish line is.”
The race of two started. On hearing the starting gun, both Matt and I ran to the finish line, Soon I sped up
and left Matt behind. Just 30 meters before arriving at the finish line, I was expecting to receive the applause for the
third time when I suffered a leg spasm (抽筋).
