I was 68 when I first stepped on stage as a standup comedian in 2003. I’d never
set foot in a comedy club before. I’ve always been a performer — I’ve worked as a
singer, actor and musician —but all that came toan end after 9/11. Ilive in NewYork,
and we watched the twin towers fall from my apartment building. For a year
afterwards, nobodywanted togo out or beentertained.
It was then that I started to think about comedy. Irealised people needed tolaugh,
to enjoy themselves again, and thought that with a little training, I could do it. I took a
few classes, tried to work out a routine, and finally plucked up the courage to get up
on stage. That first time was terrifying. I had no idea what the audience would make
ofme.
In New York, comedians are typically young men with beards. It’s hard enough
to break through as a woman, even harder as someone old enough to be their
grandmother. As I stepped on stage that first time, people laughed nervously. They
were clearly surprised to see me. I introduced myself, stated my age and tried my first
joke. There was silence. But by the time I got to the third line, people were properly
laughing, and Iwas addicted.
Now my sets differ.I might be on stage for 10 minutes in front of a dozen people,
or my one-woman show is a full hour in front of a crowd of 100. Even today, I’m
nervous before I step out. My first line is, “Hello, everybody. I’m 88 and
three-quarters years old. I’m telling you that in case I don’t make it all the way
through theshow.”Then peoplelaugh and Irelax.
After a show, people young and old come up to me, saying what an inspiration I
am. They say they want to be as active as me when they reach my age. I’m pleased I
can showthat as an older person, you don’t need to take aback seat inlife.
I’ve no intention of stopping comedy. I’m taking all these pills, trying to stayalive, and I hope to still be performing when I’m 100. My goal is to still be up there
making people laugh. It’s hard work, but it stops me being bored. I’d only be playing
golf otherwise.

Before the 1830s, most newspapers were sold through annual subscriptions in
America, usually $8 to $10 a year. Today $8 or $10 seems a small amount of money,
but at that time these amounts were forbidding to most citizens. Accordingly,
newspapers were read almost only by rich people in politics or the trades. In addition,
most newspapers had little in them that would appeal to a mass audience. They were
dull and visually forbidding. But the revolution that was taking place in the 1830s
would change all that.
The trend, then, was toward the “penny paper” — a term referring to papers
made widely available to the public. It meant any inexpensive newspaper; perhapsmore importantly it meant newspapers that could be bought in single copies on the
street.
This development didnot takeplace overnight. It had been possible(but not easy)
to buy single copies of newspapers before 1830, but this usually meant the reader had
to go down to the printer ’s office to purchase a copy. Street sales were almost
unknown. However, within a few years, street sales of newspapers would be
commonplace in eastern cities. At first the price of single copies was seldom a penny
— usually two or three cents was charged — and some of the older well-known
papers charged five or six cents. But the phrase “penny paper” caught the public’s
fancy, and soon therewould be papers that did indeed sell for onlya penny.
This new trend of newspapers for “the man on the street” did not begin well.
Some of the early ventures (企业) were immediate failures. Publishers already in
business, people who were owners of successful papers, had little desire to change the
tradition. It tooka few youthful and daring businessmen toget theball rolling.

Monkeys seem to have away with numbers.
A team of researchers trained three Rhesus monkeys to associate 26 clearly
different symbols consisting of numbers and selective letters with 0-25 drops of water
or juice as a reward. The researchers then tested how the monkeys combined — or
added —thesymbols to get thereward.
Here’s how Harvard Medical School scientist Margaret Livingstone, who led the
team, described the experiment: In their cages the monkeys were provided with touch
screens. On one part of the screen, a symbol would appear, and on the other side two
symbols inside a circle were shown. For example, the number 7 would flash on one
side of the screen and the other end would have 9 and 8. If the monkeys touched the
left side of the screen they would be rewarded with seven drops of water or juice; if
they went for thecircle, they would berewarded with thesum ofthenumbers —17in
thisexample.
After running hundreds of tests, the researchers noted that the monkeys would go
for the higher values more than half the time, indicating that they were performing a
calculation,not just memorizingthevalueof each combination.
When the team examined the results of the experiment more closely, they noticed
that the monkeys tended to underestimate (低估) a sum compared with a single
symbol when the two were close in value — sometimes choosing, for example, a 13
over the sum of 8 and 6. The underestimation was systematic: When adding two
numbers, the monkeys always paid attention to the larger of the two, and then added
onlya fraction (小部分) ofthesmallernumber toit.
“This indicates that there is a certain way quantity is represented in their brains,”
Dr. Livingstone says. “But in this experiment what they’re doing is paying more
attention tothe bignumber than thelittleone.”
32.What didthe researchers doto themonkeys before testing them?
A.They fedthem. B.They named them.
C.They trained them. D.They measured them.33.Howdid themonkeys get their reward in theexperiment?
A. By drawing a circle. B. Bytouching ascreen.
C. Bywatching videos. D. By mixingtwo drinks.
34.What didLivingstone’s team find about the monkeys?
A.They couldperform basicaddition.
B.They could understand simplewords.
C.They could memorizenumbers easily.
D.They couldholdtheir attention forlong.
35.In which section ofanewspaper maythistextappear?
A. Entertainment. B. Health.
C. Education. D. Science.

I was born into a very close family. It was just my parents and me. Over the years
I’ve noticed how well my parents manage to look after their health and how healthy
they are. I had never bothered to follow their example or been that curious about the
secret oftheir good health. Inever realizedwhat a great resource they could be.
I would look at them both, so slim, strong and healthy — much more so than me
— and think, how will I ever get to be like them? I’m constantly impressed by their
toughness. They have never taken any sick days from work, unless they really need to.
They don’t need to visit the doctor much. Their habits are deep-rooted and it works
forthem.
Part of their success is how efficiently they control what they eat. Their diet is
extremely healthy and they stick to it. For breakfast, it’s porridge; lunch is salad or a
wholemeal sandwich with butter, garlic, raw onion and black pepper. Dinner is boiled
vegetables, orbeans. Both ofthem grew upeating fresh, unprocessed food.
My dad is a bus driver, and my mum works part-time as a sales assistant. My dad
started skipping at the age of six. He’s now a mini celebrity and admired by people
worldwidewith thousands of followers onsocial media. And mymum has won fitness
competitionsat thegym.
In this respect, I was the complete opposite. I hated fitness and was lazy and unfit.
Last week I had a health scare; I found a lump (肿块) on my neck. After an
examination, it turned out to be fatty tissue, which isn’t harmful but unless I lose
weight, or I have surgery,it could get worse. My parents said to me: don’t get surgery,
let us train you and you’ll feel much better. I wanted to take the easy option and have
it removed. But I also thought, maybe this was an eye-opener and a wake-up call for
meto start getting fit.
