You probably know who Marie Curie was, but you may not have heard of Rachel
Carson. Of the outstanding ladies listed below, who do you think was the most
important woman of the past 100 years?
Jane Addams (1860-1935)
Anyone who has ever been helped by a social worker has Jane Addams to thank.
Addams helped the poor and worked for peace. She encouraged a sense of community (
社区) by creating shelters and promoting education and services for people in need.
In 1931, Addams became the first American woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
Rachel Carson (1907-1964)
If it weren’t for Rachel Carson, the environmental movement might not exist
today. Her popular 1962 book Silent Spring raised awareness of the dangers of
pollution and the harmful effects of chemicals on humans and on the world’s lakesand oceans.
Sandra Day O’Connor (1930-present)
When Sandra Day O’Connor finished third in her class at Stanford Law School,
in 1952, she could not find work at a law firm because she was a woman. She became
an Arizona state senator (参议员) and, in 1981, the first woman to join the Supreme
Court of the United States. O’Connor gave the deciding vote in many important cases
during her 25 years on the top court.
Rosa Parks (1913-2005)
On December 1, 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks would not give up
her seat on a bus to a passenger. Her simple act landed Parks in prison. But it also set
off the Montgomery bus boycott (抵制). It lasted for more than a year, and kicked
off the civil rights movement. “The only tired I was, was tired of giving in,” said
Parks.

Nanjing Yunjin brocade (云锦)is traditional Chinese silk art with a history
of about 1,600 years. Its complex weaving techniques, various colors and patterns,
and its particular choices of materials make it valuable and ancient people said, “An
inch of brocade, an inch of gold.” Today, the traditional characteristics and unique
skills of yunjin remain to be an award-winning art treasure. Its techniques are passed
down from generation to generation by craftsmen.
Zhou Shuangxi, a national-level inheritor (继承人)of yunjin weaving
techniques, is one of them. Back in 1973, he graduated from a mining school and
was selected to become a student at the NanjingYunjin Research Institute along with
five other students, just because he was “in good shape”. There were only several
masters in their 70s and not even a loom (织布机) to use. “The old masters finally
remembered a loom was stored somewhere. When I opened the door, I saw what
seemed like a pile of wood,” Zhou recalled.
“Weaving was difficult, but different from mining. Mining requires heavy
physical labor, but working with the soft and thin silk requires studying and practicing
in front of a loom for decades until you master the technique. My hands became quiteawkward due to mining, so I used to put my hands in warm water whenever I could.
In this way, they could become softer and weave the silk more easily,” he said.
Out of the six or so students, Zhou is the only one who has insisted on the trade
to this day. Having devoted the past five decades to yunjin production despite all the
sweat and struggles, he has developed his techniques to the point where he can weave
the antique dragon robes in all their small details. He also made various artworks that
not only show China's intangible cultural heritage but also serve as Zhou Shuangxi's
artistic creations.
“I am lucky to be in such a good era and I have the honor of being a representative
inheritor,” Zhou said.
24. What was Zhou's original impression of yunjin weaving techniques as a
student?
A. They faced an uncertain future.
B. They were popular among the public.
C. They required much physical strength.
D. They were closely related to his schooling.
25. Why did Zhou put his hands in warm water?
A. To relieve the pain of mining. B. To make them much handier.
C. To gain an attractive appearance. D. To rest his hands and draw inspiration.
26. What kind of person is Zhou probably according to the text?
A. Determined and creative. B. Awkward and hesitant.
C. Encouraging and honest. D. Adventurous and sociable.
27. What's the text mainly about?
A. The ups and downs of yunjin.
B. People's appreciation of a traditional art treasure.
C. Artisans' struggle to pass down traditional techniques.
D. A national-level inheritor of yunjin weaving techniques.
C
More than one-third of the world‘s food is wasted or thrown away, most of which
ends up in landfills, producing very large amounts of planet-warming greenhouse
gases. Now, many studies show that it is becoming harder to grow enough food to
feed an increasing population due to climate change and soil degradation.
But one of the most promising and simplest solutions lies in the problem itself:
this wasted food — if composted (制堆肥) — could slow climate change and improve
soil quality. Higher-quality soil also continues to absorb more carbon from the
atmosphere, helping to improve plants and contributing further to fighting climate
change. Returning one ton of organic matter to each hectare of soil would increase
the production of cereal crops each year in Africa, Asia and South America by millions
of tons. While it is true that people can compost in their yards, community gardens, or
even on their kitchen counters, larger-scale efforts, including infrastructure (基础设
施) and incentives (激励) for consumers, would take it to the next level. Imagine if
consumers could just leave unwanted food in a roadside bin for pickup, or drop it off
at a local store, earning a few cents a bucket, just like what has been offered for
recycling bottles or newspapers.
Moreover, in the case of composting, the payment incentive system would be
great because the end-product of compost can be sold to farmers, making it an
economically workable model, something that is often lacking in recycling, especially
for certain materials, like many types of plastics.
Eventually, more widespread composting of food would pave the way for
solutions to additional waste challenges, such as the disposal of packaging and
clothing. This will have other positive effects as well; if more consumers compost,
companies will be more inspired to make and use compostable packaging, clothing,
and other products. While more compostable items are starting to emerge today,
additional composting will further drive demand and innovation, and offer a game-
changing solution for the planet.
28. What can be concluded from paragraph 1?
A. The great impact of climate change on food.
B. The burden of population growth on the planet.
C. The uneven distribution of food around the world.
D. The urgency of properly dealing with wasted food.
29. What can be learned about the approach to composting wasted food?
A. It is only workable on a small scale.
B. It would take a long term to have an effect.
C. It may raise people’s awareness of reducing food waste.
D. It requires comprehensive efforts to achieve a better effect.
30. What does the author think of the payment incentive system of composting
food?
A. It is highly profitable.
B. It is easy to carry out.
C. It is a sustainable economic cycle pattern.
D. It is more effective than other recycling systems.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. How Wasted Food Could Be Reduced
B. How Wasted Food Could Impact Humans
C. How Wasted Food Could Save the Planet
D. How Wasted Food Could Become a Business
DAs Geoffrey Hinton, widely seen as the godfather of artificial intelligence, warns
about growing dangers from how it is developing, businesses are scrambling to see
how they can use the technology to their advantage.
Recently, the hot topic is how to employ ChatGPT style technology across their
businesses as quickly as possible. A boss looked at his computer, entered the transcript
of a customer complaint call, and asked ChatGPT to respond to it based on set of
rules. In about a minute it came up with a very credible answer, which was 85%
accurate but only cost 1% of the cost of employing staff. The good news for all is the
pure enhancement to productivity.
Technology has improved the quality of life. A lot of innovation has made our
entertainment time more enjoyable. But the real shock has been that these technologies
are usable in a commercial context, not just for “low-cognitive, repetitive” tasks, i.
e. robotic-tasks likely to be automated.
The surprise has been how employable the technology is to highly creative, high-
value work. Specifically, creating an image, or music, or coding a programme can be
achieved in seconds rather than weeks of briefing and refining. So the good news is
that rapid employment of this technology could solve the longstanding productivity
crisis. The bad news is that it could occur so rapidly as to overtake workers’ ability
to adapt in time, creating social crisis. Could we face in call centers and creative
studios in the 2020s, the equivalent of what happened in the coal mines in the
1980s?
Some individuals have started to suggest that states should provide a basic
income due to the possibility of AI leading to job loss. The response of tech enthusiasts
is that “You won’t be replaced by an AI, but you might be replaced by someone who
knows how to use AI”. But they used to say that’s why everybody should learn how
to code. That might not be such wise career advice any more.
32. What do we learn about ChatGPT?
A. It improves customers’ satisfaction.
B. It enhances productivity and reduces cost.
C. It perfects customers’ ability to summarize.
D. It revolutionizes the business with accuracy.
33. How has technology influenced individuals?
A. By enriching leisure time. B. By increasing dependence.
C. By simplifying people’s work. D. By reshaping entertainment forms.
34. What does the underlined word “equivalent” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Alternative. B. Opposite. C. Similarity. D. Reference.
35. What is the author s attitude towards the application of AI?
A. Intolerant. B. Favorable. C. Indifferent.D. Objective.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下列短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中

Fifteen-year-old Cameron and twelve-year-old Barton lived in a town in Taxco.
Their parents worked tirelessly day in and day out, yet still struggled to make ends
meet. Cameron and Barton, both in middle school witnessed their parents hard work
and anxiety and decided to take action and offer their assistance.
As summer vacation began, while other children were enjoying their carefree
time, Cameron and Barton had a different plan. They started the challenging journey
of seeking part-time jobs. Their first attempt was at a local restaurant. Filled with
hope, they stood before the manager with an eager expression. However, themanager looked at them critically and said, “You two are too young!” Their hearts
sank instantly. Cameron felt a sense of deep disappointment, thinking, “How can we
prove ourselves if no one gives us a chance? “ Barton's face fell as he asked his
brother, “Will we ever find a job?"
Not discouraged by the rejection, they then went to a store named Thompson's
Grocery, hoping to become assistants. “Hello, you must be Mr. Thompson. We’re
here to apply for the job,” Cameron said. Barton stood on tiptoe and handed a card
from their school's help-wanted board to Mr. Thompson behind the counter, who was
the owner and seemed to be a kind person. However, before they could say more, he
shook his head.
"This job is too hard for you kids, ” he said.“I need someone big and strong.”“Let
us give it a try, and if you don’t like our work, don't pay us.”Cameron begged. He
stared at the brothers, who were so sincere, then nodding. Next, he led them to the
warehouse(仓库) of the store. The floor was piled with boxes of different sizes and
all kinds of objects at random, filling every corner. The various items were mixed up
chaotically(混乱地). It seemed as if they had never been sorted or cleaned. Cameron
and Barton were assigned to clear away the items.
