Life Can Surprise You
For most people, graduation(毕业) is an exciting day, but my graduation day was not.
I remember that weekend two years ago. Family and friends had traveled from across the country to watch our
class walk across that stage. But like everyone else in my graduating class, I had watched the economy(经济) turn
from bad to worse in my fourth year of university. We graduates had degrees, but very few job opportunities. I
knew that the next day I would no longer have a place to call home.
I knew my small university town couldn’t offer me any opportunities, so I drove to Southern California to find
work. But what I thought would take a week lasted for two weeks, and then four weeks, and I found myself in the
same place I was in before.
You know that feeling when you wake up and you are full of fear? Fear about something you can’t control.
You hope that everything that has happened to you so far is just a bad dream.
So what did I do to stay calm(沉着的、冷静的)? I wrote. Something about putting words on the page made
everything seem a little clearer, a little brighter. Something about writing gave me hope. If you want something
enough...sometimes a little hope is all you need!
I turned my scary feelings into the children’s book—about a surprising hero who simply refused to give up on
his dream.
Then one day, without a writing degree or contacts(接触) in the writing world—just a lot of hard work—I was
offered a publishing deal for my first book! After that, things slowly began to fall into place. I was offered a second
book deal. Then, a few months later, I got an interview with a big company and got a good job.
It takes time, but just hold on! Things can change when you don’t expect it.
24. The writer didn’t think the graduation day was exciting because ________.
A. he/she didn’t get university degree B. his/her family and friends didn’t come
C. he/she had very few job opportunities D. he/she got a bad score in the fourth year of university25. What did the writer do to stay calm?
A. Got a good job offer. B. Did something about writing.
C. Drove back to his/her hometown. D. Found a job in his/her university.
26. What helped the writer achieve success?
A. Writing degree and skills. B. Good job interview skills.
C. Keeping on working hard. D. Support from family and friends.
Taking a gap year after high school is getting more popular among young adults each year. According to the
American Gap Year Association (AGA), a gap year is often a year-long break taken between high school and
college. AGA stresses that a gap year is a year on, rather than a year off, to oppose the belief that students are taking
this time off as a vacation from schooling.
Gap years offer an opportunity for experiential learning. They allow you to leave the classroom and learn new
skills and ideas through doing something. You might find yourself in completely new situations that call for special
problem-solving skills. Moreover, many students go through twelve years of schooling in the same place with the
same group of people. By taking a gap year, they can step out of their comfort zone (区域) and into an entirely new
culture. Just like gaining new experiences on a gap year, they can also meet new people of all different ages and
walks of life. Finally, a gap year can also be a great way to get yourself recharged (重新充电). Instead of
immediately jumping into the next four years of your education, you can take a break from the classroom and focus
on your personal interests and passions. Many top universities encourage accepted students to take a gap year
before starting college.
,
However before you get too excited about the idea of taking a gap year, you should also know about
possible drawbacks. If you take a gap year, you could fall a year behind your peers (同伴). To catch up, you have to
come up with a plan to graduate in three years. For the most part, studies show that students who take a gap year
find themselves more driven when they arrive at college. However, you might find it difficult to return to an
educational environment after taking a year away from the classroom.
There is no set time-line for your education, and going straight from high school to college definitely isn't for
everyone. For me personally, I still benefit from my gap year experience traveling in European countries. Cap years
can take a number of forms, and they require a good deal of intention and planning. So if you have a will-thought-
out plan for taking a gap year, then you should feel confident in your decision. Taking a meaningful gap year could
be one of the best life experiences you ever have!
27. According to the passage, by taking a gap year, students can __________.
A. become more popular among their friends
B. catch with their peers at study in collegeC. build a stronger relationship between learning and doing
D. realize the importance of staying in their comfortable zone
28. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Students should be encouraged to have a time off for a vacation after high school.
B. Colleges should require students to spend their gap year traveling in Europe.
C. It's better to recharge yourself by going straight from high school to college.
D. A gap year provides students with an opportunity for personal growth.
29. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Take a gap year on
B. Gap years: a perfect holiday
C. The risk of taking a gap year
D. How to take a meaningful gap year
Social Media… the Highs and Lows
Twenty years ago, the idea of sharing our lives so openly with the world was unheard of. However, for young
people today it is considered completely normal to share pictures of their lives and interact online every day. Fans
of social media point out that the world has never been so connected as it has allowed people to make friends, learn
about the world and celebrate life.
However, many people have concerns about the effects of this new way of living, particularly around the
amount and type of information that is shared so openly.
Now researchers have found that too much time on social media may indeed have some negative( 消极的 )
effects. They measured people’s attitudes and feelings before and after browsing social media sites. They found that
the more time people spent on social media, the more unhappy they became.
There are a number of reasons for this. When browsing social media, people often see photographs and stories
showing beautiful holidays, fun parties and fashionable clothes. People seldom post negative stories or bad
pictures, so it can be misleading. For those looking at these pictures and comparing them to their own lives, they
can end up feeling sad and depressed. They might think their lives are worse in comparison. Even for those people
who post positive(积极的) stories and pictures, they too can feel stressed and worried. The number of “likes” and comments on their posts can make them worried about their popularity. Of course,
there is also the problem of “cyber bullying”(网络暴力 ) where people become victims of bullying online when
others make negative or cruel comments(评论) about them.
The reality is that social media is a part of modern life and it is not going to go away. This research shows us
that it is important to deal with the relationship between our online and offline lives properly. We don’t have to
disconnect from the Internet to live a happy life, but we should realise that the pictures we see and stories we read
are only part of a bigger picture. If we can do that, we can protect ourselves and enjoy our lives.
30. According to the passage, we know __________.
A. spending more time on social media makes people more enjoyable
B. researchers haven’t found anything negative about social media
C. it is common for young people to share their lives online
D. the world is not so connected like before
31. The words “have concerns about” in Paragraph 2 probably mean “__________”.
A. feel worried about B. look forward to
C. speak highly of D. get used to
32. The writer says that social media can make people unhappy because __________.
A. different people make different comments
B. there are many negative stories and bad pictures
C. they compare positive pictures to their own lives
D. the number of “likes” is larger than they expected
33. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To ask us to protect ourselves from “cyber bullying”.
B. To advise us to keep away from the Internet to live a happy life.
C. To remind us of posting positive stories and good pictures online.
D. To tell us to keep a balance between our online and offline lives.
四、
What do you say when you pick up the phone?
You say “hello”, of course.
What do you say when someone introduces a friend, a relative, anybody at all?You say “hello”.
“Hello” has been for a long time considered to be the standard English language greeting since English people
began greeting. But is that true?
It may be the most spoken word on the planet and the English word that most people learn first. The word is so
familiar to us that it's surprising how new it is: “hello” has only been in use for about the last 200 years of the 1000-
year history of English.
The Oxford English Dictionary says the first published use of “hello” goes back only to 1827. But it wasn't
mainly a greeting back then. People in the 1830s said “hello” to attract attention (“Hello, what do you think you're
doing?”), or to express surprise (“Hello, what do we have here?”).
But the true breakthrough for this now-common word was when it was used in the service of brand-new
technology: the telephone. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, it was Thomas Edison who put “hello” into
common usage. He asked the people who used his phone to say “hello” when answering—which required people to
address an unseen and unknown person. It was simpler and more efficient (高效的) than some other greetings used
in the early days of the telephone, such as “Do I get you?” and “Are you there?” However, the actual inventor of
the telephone, Alexander Graham Bell, thought that the better word was “ahoy”, which turns out to be much longer
—at least 100 years longer—than “hello”. It too, was a greeting from the Dutch (荷兰语) “hoi” meaning “hello.”
For his entire life, Bell insisted on answering the phone with “Ahoy.”
“Hello” obviously caught on, and spread along with the telephone. Had it not been for Edison, our greetings
might be very different today. It could be possible that we are still greeting people with “Ahoy” when picking up
the phone.
