1.特殊疑问句形式。以when, where, what, which, who, how much/many等疑问词开头引出的问题;
2. 以是非题的形式。true /false, not true / false或EXCEPT,近年这种题型较少;
3. 以According to… 开头提问方式;
4. 以填空题的形式,如:
(1)To avoid attracting mountain lions, people are advised________.
(2)By the first sentence of the passage author means that________.
(3)It seems that now a country’s economy depends much on________.
(4)If you are interested in knowing about what people’s life will be, you may visit________.
(5)The policemen were told “to look the other way” (the underlined part in Paragraph 2) so that________ .
(6)The policeman who said “Good evening” to Rolls wanted to________.

Accompanied by her father, using a combination of aid and free climbing and taking advantage of some
special equipment and ropes for protection, 10-year-old Selah made it to the top of El Capitan on June 12 after fivedays of big wall climbing.
Climbing the challenging and adventurous Nose route of El Capitan was a labor of love for Selah in more than
one way. Her parents , Mike and Joy Schneiter, fell in love on this 3,000- plus-foot huge rock and she has always
wanted to feel the way that her parents felt when they were up there together. Selah showed great interest in rock
climbing at an early age. She wore her first rock-climbing equipment shortly after she learned to walk. She first
dreamed of climbing El Capitan when she was 6 or 7.
El Capitan is a famous mountain-sized rock in Yosemite National Park. Getting to its top is no easy task. It's
taller, as reported, than the tallest building in the world-Dubai’s Buri Khalifa. El Capitan and its difficult Nose
route, which runs more than 3,000 feet high up the center of the rock's face, is considered one of the world's hardest
big wall climbs and has attracted the best climbers over time. But never before had a youngster accomplished it.
Selah's achievement caught national attention. Outside Magazine called her the youngest documented person
to climb the Nose. Ken Yager, president of the Yosemite Climbing Association, said he also couldn't think of
anyone younger who has done it.
Selah is humble about her El Capitan accomplishment. "I'm not necessarily a special kid or anything like that,
she said. "There were a few times when I would be so worn that it would kind of discourage me from holding on.
But overall, it was just great to keep plugging away.”
Selah shared this advice for other young climbers dreaming of big walls, "It doesn't take necessarily a super
special person to do something like that. You just have to put your mind to it.”

2. What is the purpose of paragraph 3?
A. To state El Capitan's height.
B. To prove El Capitan's popularity.
C. To introduce El Capitan's location.
D. To stress the challenge of climbing El Capitan.
3. Which of the following best describes Selah?
A. Determined. B. Generous.C. Warm-hearted. D. Fortunate.
4. What may be Selah's advice for other young climbers?
A. Dream big and aim high.
B. Be committed to your ambition.
C. Chance favors the prepared mind.
D. Nothing is impossible for a genius.

There are around 400,000 students in London. As university can be a costly time, many of these students will
want to look for part-time work. Here are 4 relatively easy jobs to bag yourself in London and ensure a bit of
pocket money through your university experience.
Waitressing
It is not hard to find waitressing jobs since London has an abundance of pubs and eateries. Gumtree and

and check out the services that the business provides. You report back to the client and they will pay for your
purchases alongside £5 —10.
Care Assistant
For those who have a heart of gold and want to help, caring is the way. There's a huge demand for people to
spend your free time with elderly people or help people with disabilities. It can be cooking meals or making sure
they're taking their medicine on time.

UK-based supermarket Waitrose has been accused by social media users for selling tree leaves at 6 pounds.
Photos of various tree leaves packaged in plastic bags and arranged as flower bouquets (花束) went hot on
social media lately, causing complaints because of the product’s price, six British pounds. Considering tree leaves
can literally be picked up from the street this time of year, ifs understandable that some people went after Waitrose,
accusing the supermarket of trying to make money by selling something that is actually free.
“A bag of actual leaves? I’ll sell you a bin bag of leaves for 10 pence,” one customer wrote.
“This has got to be from the drunk Monday morning meeting category of ideas,5, someone else commented.
Apparently, the unusual bouquets appeared on Waitrose supermarket shelves as a way to welcome autumn, and
featured a sticker urging customers to “bring the outdoors inside”. ''Brighten up your home with freshly picked
flowers whose pleasant scents refresh the season,95 the official product description read. “We source the best
blooms from expert growers, and handle them gently so that they can look beautiful for longer.”
Despite the generally negative feedback on its autumn-themed product, the British supermarket proudly
announced that the idea was inspired at the beginning of autumn by a demand from shoppers. ^Whatever we intend
to offer, we base our decision on the demands from customers. Our customers love using these leaves to mix in
with their seasonal flowers to brighten their homes,” a Waitrose spokesperson told The Sun.
Interestingly, there were those who seemed to somewhat justify the price tag of this bag of leaves. They said
that those were obviously ‘‘high quality leaves”. Their claim might be true. But even a bottle of wine can be bought
at the same price or less. It seems crazy to charge 6 pounds for a bag of leaves.
8. Why was Waitrose accused by social media?
A. Failing to offer high quality flowers.
B. Picking up tree leaves from the street.
C. Carrying out seemingly drunk ideas.
D. Selling free tree leaves at high prices.9. We can learn from the passage that_______.
A. tree leaves packaged in plastic bags were not fresh
B. the unusual bouquets were intended to greet autumn
C. the supermarket withdrew tree leaves due to negative feedback
D. the idea of selling tree leaves was inspired by the expert growers
10. What seems to be the writer’s attitude toward selling tree leaves at 6 pounds?
A. Indifferent. B. Favorable. C. Reserved. D. Disapproving.

The joy of giving is real, according to a study. Research presented in the Journal of the Association for
Psychological Science shows that those who give gifts are happier — and happier for longer — than those who
receive gifts.
Researchers conducted two studies last year. In one, participants were given $5 every day for five days and
were required to spend the money on the same thing each day. Some participants were required to spend the money
on themselves, while others were required to give to make a donation to charity. In a second experiment that was
done online, participants played 10 rounds of a word puzzle game and each won 5 cents per round, which they
could keep or donate.
In both experiments, participants reported their overall happiness. Those who donated their money showed
that their happiness declined at a much slower rate than those who kept the money or spent it on themselves.
The researchers note that when people focus on an outcome, they can easily compare outcomes, which may
diminish their sensitivity to each experience. When people focus on an action, they may focus less on comparison
and instead experience each act of giving as a unique happiness-inducing event. Further analyses ruled out some
potential alternative explanations, such as the possibility that participants who gave to others had to think longer
and harder about what to give, which could promote higher happiness.
The results are especially interesting because according to one of the researchers, Ed O’Brien of the University
of Chicago Booth School of Business, they conflict with past research. “If you want to sustain happiness over time,
past research tells us that we need to take a break from what were currently consuming and experience something
new. Our research reveals that the kind of thing may matter more than assumed: Repeated giving, even in identical
ways to identical other, may continue to feel relatively fresh and relatively pleasurable the more we do it,”
O’Brien said.
So for all the holiday gifts you give this season, expect to feel happy and know that feeling is going to stickaround for a while.
11. What’s the function of the first paragraph?
A. To lead to the topic.
B. To highlight the importance of the study.
C. To recommend a journal.
D. To persuade people to give gifts regularly.
12. Why did the researchers do two experiments?
A. To challenge the past research.
B. To rule out different experimental data.
C. To show the benefits of donation.
D. To make the conclusion more convincing.
13. What does the underlined word “diminish” probably mean in the fourth paragraph?
A. Develop. B. Show. C. Reduce. D. Lack.
14. What’s the main finding of the new study?
A. Gift giving will result in longer happiness than receiving.
B. Thinking longer and harder on giving will promote higher happiness.
C. The feeling of happiness will disappear soon if people just give holiday gifts.
D. Taking a break from what were currently consuming will sustain happiness.

A retired postman from Turkey and a beautiful white swan have been inseparable for nearly four decades, and
the story of their amazing friendship has melted the hearts of millions.
When Recep Mirzan spotted a wounded swan in a field in Turkey’s Edirne province, in 1984, he had no idea
that he was about to meet his best friend. He was in a car with a group of friends, when he spotted a swan that
appeared to have a broken wing in an empty field. Mirzan quickly realized that leaving the bird there was the same
as signing its death sentence, as predators (捕食者) would have most likely eaten it, so he stopped the car and took
the bird with him. He took it home and started nursing it back to health.
“Since I love animals, I took her home instead of leaving her as food to foxes,’’ Mirzan told The Associated Press.
We got used to each other. We never separated. Even after the female swan's broken wing healed, it didn’t try to fly
away. Instead, it befriended the other animals on Recep’s farm in the Karaagac region, and decided to stick around.
Recep named her Garip, and she has been with him for the last 37 years.
“She comes when I call. Since 1984, she has never left me, not even during the river floods,” the retiredpostman told Anadolu News Agency. “She used to be more vigorous, but she has grown old now. If she dies, I will
make her a nice grave here, but I hope we live more together.”
Garip has her own coop on Mirzan’s farm, but she mostly spends nights in it. During the day, she is busy
following her human friend around, either during his daily chores, or on his evening walks.
After his wife died a few years ago, Recep Mirzan started spending more time with his animals, and since he
has no human children, he regards Garip as his child.
Whooper swans can live for decades in protected environments, but Garip has long surpassed the average
lifespan for her species.
15. Why did Recep save the swan according to the passage?
A. He felt extremely lonely.
B. The swan was a rare animal.
C. He was a real animal lover.
D. The swan was being followed by foxes.
16. It can be inferred from the passage that __________.
A. the swan stayed with Recep at night after the death of his wife
B. Garip lived a longer life probably because of the care of Recep
C. Recep’s friends directly signed the wounded swan death sentence
D. Recep was sure to meet a lifelong friend when he spotted the wounded swan
17. What might be the best title for the text?
A. A Retired Postman’s Story Has Melted the Hearts of Millions
B. Man and Swan Have Been Best Friends for the Last 37 Years
C. A Wounded Swan Has Befriended the Other Animals on a Farm
D. Humans Have Made Efforts to Protect the Environments for Swans

In Asia, the car is as much a status symbol as it is a means of transport. A car’s design is not the only
consideration when a vehicle has to suit the needs of everyone in the family .
This is the case for one particular group of drivers: The sandwich generation, who are stuck between caring for
their children and caring for their parents. For them, the ‘family car’ is often shared with everyone from the newly
licensed teens to adults with their own kids, or grandparents struggling with physical mobility.
With differing demands of so many people from boomers to Gen Z, your car has to appeal to all — and keep
everyone safe in the event of a car accident.Over 20% of serious driver accidents involving teens were caused by driving too fast for the road conditions.
But it isn’t just risky driving behavior that causes teens to be the source of serious road accidents. In fact, according
to research conducted by the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, most speed-related teen crashes are due to
inexperience and a lack of driving skills rather than intentionally risky driving behavior.
It can be challenging for newbie drivers to appropriately judge the proper speed at which to take turns,
especially on less-than-perfect roads or driving conditions. Helping them along is Subaru’s Active Torque
Vectoring, which makes up for any over-eagerness, ensuring you can take the car through corners in a smooth and
safe manner.
For seniors with slower reaction, or having difficulty stretching out their neck to check blind spots, being able
to quickly avoid danger can be critical. Subaru’s Blind Spot Detection system will alert you if there’s a vehicle in
the neighboring lane. What’s more, Subaru’s EyeSight Lane Departure Warning warns the driver if they start to
stray by accident from their traffic lane and endanger other vehicles in the neighbouring lane, while the EyeSight
Lane Sway Warning system will remind you should you begin to move back and forth in your lane.
It can be difficult to find a car that appeals to multiple generations. But there are some things you should never
compromise regardless of your age or driving experience. And at the top of that list is safety.
18. According to the text, what is the reason for most speed-related teen crashes?
A. Their risky driving behavior on purpose
B. Their inability to check blind spots.
C. A lack of experience and driving skills
D. The busy roads or ideal driving conditions
19. What will help new drivers to take turns at proper speed?
A. Subaru’s Active Torque Vectoring
B. EyeSight Lane Sway Warning system
C. Subaru’s Blind Spot Detection system
D. Subaru’s EyeSight Lane Departure Warning
20. What is the meaning of the underlined word in paragraph 5?
A. Speed up B. Move away
C. Pull over D. Turn around
21. What is the main idea of the text?
A. The sandwich generation mainly care about their parents’ demands.B. It is challenging to design a multifunctional car to satisfy everyone.
C. It’s extremely important to drive safely no matter how old the drivers are.
D. Subaru can ensure driving safety of the drivers ranging from teens to seniors.

The Notting Hill Carnival is London’s biggest street festival and one of the most famous carnivals in the
world. The carnival is an important cultural event for London’s Afro Caribbean community and celebration of
multi-cultural British life.
Notting Hill Carnival takes place in London every August bank holiday. Bank holiday refers to a public
holiday, for example Christmas Day. It is the most colourful and largest street event in the UK. The festival
celebrates the traditions of the Afro-Caribbean community, who immigrated to England from the West Indies in the
1950s. They brought with them the Caribbean idea of the carnival, with colourful costumes, parades, steel bands
and street dancing. The tradition to hold the carnival began in 1964 and it has taken place every year since then.
Preparations for the carnival start many months in advance. Costumes need to be made, and floats built, ready
for the carnival street parades. Steel bands practise traditional Caribbean music on instruments built from used oil
buckets. Just before the festival, the streets are decorated with yellow, green and red banners, and recording devices
are set in place to carry the rhythmic sounds over the loud noise of the London traffic. The carnival is celebrated
over three days, and is full of music and colour. Parades of steel and brass bands, floats, and dancers in colourful
costumes make their way through the narrow London streets, watched by tens of thousands of people. The streets
are lined with stands selling tropical fruits, such as fresh mangoes, watermelons and pineapples. Everyone in
London dances—young and old, black and white—and even the policemen on duty take part in the fun. For these
three days in August, a little Caribbean magic touches the streets of London.
22. What is the writer's main aim in writing the text?

24. During the Notting Hill Carnival, _______.
A. fruit stands are not allowed in the streets.
B. preparations start early in the morning
C. music and colour fill the streets of London
D. traffic is banned from the main shopping streets
25. What can we infer from the third paragraph?

B. Only Caribbean people take part in it.
C. It is gaining in popularity among the white in recent years.
D. The streets in London are filled with pop music.

It was Thanksgiving Day a few years ago. My daughter was sitting on the couch watching the parade. My
dogs kept lifting their noses to sniff the turkey slowly cooking in the oven. And my sons and I were secretly getting
a piece of pumpkin pie with cream to hold us until dinner was done. As we lifted our forks I said, “Life is short! Eat
dessert first!” Then I smiled as we ate our pie with delight and gave the outside part to the dogs.
Later I decided to take my oldest dog, Snoopy out for a walk. As we slowly walked through the ankle deep
leaves I let my mind wander to memories of Thanksgivings past. I could see my grown children as babies sitting in
their high chairs covered in mashed potatoes. I remembered all of those years spent visiting their grandparents and
all of the special foods they made. There was sausage stuffing, noodles and cheese, and fried potatoes. There was
turkey and delicious desserts made with love. And there was the three day nap (小睡) you wanted to take after
dinner.
Even more than the food were the memories of joy that stuck in my mind and stayed in my heart. There were
the smiles and hugs, the shared stories and laughter, the love so freely given at this time of the year. I went back
inside with all of them flowing through me. I felt both glad and sad at the same time. I was happy for all the blessed
times we had shared over the years and sad that they had flown by so fast. Most of all, though, I felt at peace and
thankful to God for this wonderful life we are given here.
The truth is the more you love, the more thankfulness fills your heart. The more you love, the more joy you
create in your life. Make the most of each day you are given here then. Be thankful for the glorious gift of life. Be
the blessing you were meant to be and make every day Thanksgiving Day.26. What do the first two paragraphs focus on?
A. The preparations for Thanksgiving
B. The happy memories of Thanksgiving
C. The various ways to celebrate Thanksgiving
D. The customs of celebrating Thanksgiving
27. Why did the author feel sad?
A. Happy times spent with her family seemed short.
B. She wished she were young again.
C. She had many regrets in those happy times.
D. Things changed much and she never felt the same.
28. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Desserts were the author’s favorite.
B. The author’s grandparents were good chefs.
C. Delicious food was the best part of her memories.
D. The get-together of the family was full of love.
29. What does the author want to tell us through the passage?
A. We should make the best of Thanksgiving Days.
B. Everybody should treasure the time with their family.
C. People should live at present and be grateful for what they have.
D. Thanksgiving Days are the best time for people to express their love.

Most solar panels acquire sunlight from only one side, meaning they can acquire more or less of it depending
on where the sun is in the sky. In recent years, they’ve become far more effective typically turning around 22
percent of the light they acquire into energy. In a new study published in the journal Joule on Tuesday, scientists
put forth a way to increase that percentage even higher: double-sided solar panels that can move to follow the sun.
Basically, these panels can acquire sun from not only their sun-facing side but also from the light reflected off
the ground onto their dark undersides. At the same time, a GPS allows them to move on an axis from east to west
in order to always be pointed at a best angle to acquire the sun’s rays. Though double-sided solar panels and sun-
following solar panels are both in use currently, models that combine the two technologies aren’t widely available
for commercial use, Solar experts predict explosive growth in the market soon, though.
The study authors determined that these two-sided sun-tracking panels produce an average of 35 percent moreenergy than immobile single-panel systems, and are 16 percent more cost-efficient. That holds true even when
accounting for changes in weather conditions.
“This means that investing in double-sided and tracking systems should be a safe bet for the foreseeable
future, Carlos Rodriguez-Gallegos,” the study’s lead author said.
The same warnings for solar panels and their effect on the local environment apply to the double-sided,
moving systems as well, if not more so. Lead used in solar panels can be one source of local pollution, and Dustin
Mulvaney, an associate professor of environmental studies, told Earther in an email double-sided panels could
mean “twice as much lead” as traditional solar systems.
Since these new panels are more energy efficient, they could save not only money but also land. That would
require restructuring how solar contracts currently work.

More museums are showing multisensory art, which asks people to use more than one of the senses.
Sometimes, the art has a smell. Others have sounds. The artists are finding new ways for people to understand their
work.
The Dorothy and Charles Mosesian Center for the Arts is in Watertown. Recently, the center created “Please
Touch the Art”. The special show lets visitors touch the work. Aneleise Ruggles works at the Mosesian Center. She
is in charge of the museum’s shows. She says that “Please Touch the Art” rethinks meaning in art. The artist must
go beyond sight. Forty artists created 52 pieces for the show. Ruggles explained that “Please Touch the Art” is not a
show for blind people. Everyone can enjoy the show. Guests use all five senses. The work, though also includespeople who are blind or have low vision. “Touchable art creates something people can share.” He also said, “Touch
is key to understanding the works.”
A group of guests with low vision visited “Please Touch the Art”. At first, they were nervous about touching
the work. One man touched a raised blue painting. The work is Claudia Ravaschiere and Michael Moss’s “Whirl”.
Soft music followed his movements. By the end, the visitors were no longer shy. They wrapped each other in
hanging cloth.
Shows like “Please Touch the Art” can change what we think of as fine art. Ruggles says the change will take
time. The art world must find a new understanding of art. They also need a new way to talk about touchable art.
