With paper flowers and music hanging around in the air,Lyu Jun was hosting a small farewell ceremony at
an industrial zone in Shenzhen,Guangdong Province. It was a funeral for a pet dog.Lyu came up with the idea of
becoming a pet mortician(殡葬师) four years ago when he was preparing to start a business.
“At that time, there was only one brick-and-mortar(实体的) business that provided funeral services for pets
in Shenzhen, but hundreds of pets die every day in this city,” he said.According to Lyu,many pet owners
used to bury the remains of their beloved animals near their homes ,which had a harmful impact on the
environment and created the risk of spreading disease.
He saw a gap in the market for someone able to properly handle the death of pets.“A pet funeral service
provides treatment of the bodies that is harm-free,and it is the greatest comfort to pet owners,” Lyu said.
He takes good care of the remains of the pets and tidies up their appearance before the funeral. In addition,he
prepares funeral addresses and selects suitable tombs for the pets.He also films funerals for owners who cannot
attend the ceremonies, and provides paper and pens for those who want to write down their blessings and hang the
notes on the wishing tree.
Over the past four years,Lyu has bid farewell to more than 2,000 dogs, cats and other kinds of animals. He
also does volunteer work in his spare time to promote responsible dog raising.“The pet funeral service industry is
still in its babyhood, and I hope there will be a set of strict standards for people who take on this job and a better
environment for the industry,” Lyu said.

A.Because he could earn a lot of money from it.
B.Because he thought it met the market requirement.
C.Because he thought it would be a unique and challenging business.

In the world of Chinese archaeology(考古学),a sign of a dig’s importance is the sight of Zhou Mingsheng at
work.A field technician who has worked at archaeological sites all around China,Master Zhou is credited with the
gentlest touch in his profession.Born into a farming family,he is a “national-level craftsman” with a talent for
using simple tools to get relics(遗物) that would crumble in other hands, says his current boss,Wang Xu,
director of an archaeological site at Shuanghuaishu,a Neolithic(新石器时代的) settlement near the Yellow River
in the central province of Henan.
It is not beauty that attracts visitors to Shuanghuaishu. At 5,300 years old,the settlement is the work of a
culture too simple to have left behind many buried treasures. The single most precious find,to date,is a finger-
length sculpture of a silkworm.Nor is the setting lovely: an area surrounded by deafening insects, between a
highway and two power stations.Rather ,the site’s importance is historical. For since the birth of Chinese
archaeology in the 1920s,it has been inseparable from claims that China has the oldest unbroken civilisation on
Earth.
Leading archaeologists say that the site has the right combination of location, age and distinctive cultural
elements to be the capital of an early Chinese kingdom. That would make it a bridge between China’s written
history and the era of the Yellow Emperor, who is said to rule over these central plains almost 5,000 years ago,
though many foreign scholars doubt his existence.Chinese media call the site proof of China’s 5,000 years of
history.
Foreigners complain about a lack of written records,Mr Wang notes.Perhaps they are missing symbols that
will one day be understood, for instance in patterned pottery “Outsiders can’t keep using Western standards to
apply to Chinese ruins,” he argues.
28.What does the underlined word “crumble” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Result. B.Break.
C.Wait. D.Shine.
29.Why does Shuanghuaishu attract visitors?
A.It is of great historical significance.
B.It has various precious treasures.
C.It has appealing scenery.
D.It is easily accessible.
30.What is Mr Wang’s attitude towards foreigners’ view?
A.Ambiguous. B.Tolerant.
C.Disapproving. D.Sympathetic.
31.What might be the best title for the text?
A.Chinese History Amazes the World
B.Chinese Archaeology Catches on
C.China Follows Its Tradition
D.China Digs Its PastD
There’s more evidence that what’s good for your heart is good for your head.A new study shows that people
who run, swim or do other moderate intensity(中等强度) exercise have brains that look,on average,10 years
younger than the brains of couch potatoes.
“Our study showed that for older people, getting moderate intensity exercise may be protective, helping
them keep their brains work better,” said Dr Clinton Wright of the University of Miami, who led the study. But
it’s not necessarily easy.Walking, golf, bowling and yoga don’t count, and people need to start before they begin
showing memory loss,Wright’s team reported in the journal Neurology.
The study of nearly 900 people who exercise regularly showed that 90 percent fell into the low-intensity
group. These people are part of a larger group taking part in a bigger study called Northern Manhattan Study. They
were asked how long and how often they exercised during the past two weeks.Five years later, they were tested
for memory and thinking skills and got a brain MRI.Seven years after that, they took the memory and thinking
tests again. The 10 percent who said they took part in moderate intensity exercise scored better on the tests. These
included running, climbing, swimming, riding bicycles and so on.
“We found that those with moderate intensity activity had higher scores and slower decline than inactive
people when comparing the results,” the study team wrote.
Many studies have shown that exercise may not prevent Alzheimer’s disease but may delay it.The findings fit
in with a study that found two years of exercising, eating healthier food and brain training can promote people’s
memory function.
32.What’s true about the study?
A.Most people surveyed took low-intensity exercise.
B.Only 900 people took part in the bigger study.
C.High-intensity exercise is better.
D.Ten people scored best on the tests.
33.How did the study team come to the conclusion?
A.By observing people exercise.
B.By using examples.
C.By making a comparison.
D.By doing a brain MRI.
34.What do we know from the last paragraph?
A.Exercise will definitely strengthen people’s memory.
B.Alzheimer’s disease may be held back by moderate intensity exercise.
C.Exercise can put off the beginning of memory decline.
D.The findings fit in with the study of healthy food.
35.What’s the best title for this passage?
A.How to Keep Healthy
B.Ways to Make Your Brain Work BetterC.To Exercise or Not
D.Moderate Intensity Exercise Keeps Your Brain Younger

“The calm before the storm” is a very familiar expression. It is usually used to describe a peaceful period just
before a very stressful situation or a tense argument. 36 They noted that before certain storms the seas would
seem to become calm and the winds would drop.
But why is it often so calm before a storm? 37 According to US website HowStuffWorks,a calm
period occurs because many storms, tornadoes and hurricanes draw in all the warm and damp air from the
surrounding area.As this air rises into the storm clouds,it cools and acts as “ fuel for the storm, like petrol in a
car.”
Once the storm has taken all the energy it can from the air,it is pushed out from the top of the storm clouds
and falls back down to ground level. 38 So once it covers an area,it causes a calm period before the storm.
39 First count how many seconds there are between a flash of lightning and a clap of thunder, roughly
three seconds equal one kilometer.A good judgement is that if your count is below 30 seconds, you should seek
shelter straight away.
However, due to the complexity of storm system, calm doesn’t always go first. So,your best bet is to keep
yourself updated with weather reports for any predictions regarding a coming storm in your area. 40
A.Science has given us the answer.
B.There is no definite answer to the question.
C.Weather reports sometimes cannot be trusted.
D.British sailors coined the phrase in the late 1600s.
E.As the air declines,it becomes warm and dry, which is stable.
F.The Weather Network has a tip for working out how far away a storm is.
G.That’s the most reliable way to predict the next display of nature’s temper.

me is my dad.
Three months after turning fourteen, my life was great. I was getting settled into a high school; my grades
were already starting off greatly and I was making friends. One day as I came home from school, I walked into our
living room, finding my mom and dad talking. My parents turned to me and told me to sit down because there was
something important they had to tell me. I soon found out that my dad’s liver (肝脏) was failing and he needed an
immediate transplant. I was shocked and confused. He was working and never looked sick. My parents told me not
to worry because everything would be fine. Four months had passed and my dad still had not received a new liver;
he was progressively getting worse. His body seemed to be getting weaker, but he constantly said he was fine.
It was getting hard for my family and me. My dad had to quit his job leaving my mom to be the only provider.
I had to take on the responsibility of cleaning the house, cooking meals and checking on my dad while my mom
was at work. I had to cut back on hanging with my friends because my dad was beginning to go in and out of the
hospital. My focus for school was starting to slip. So were my grades. Two nights before my school spring break,
my mom received a call from the hospital that my dad had been in a car accident and that he was in hospital.
Surprisingly, my dad hadn’t received a scratch on him. Then next night my mom received a call from the doctor
stating that there was a liver that matched my dad’s body and that he needed to get to the hospital immediately.
