Passage1
To help new students, the International Business Institute (IBI) plans to set up a buddy (伙伴) peer
support project. The project will help new students meet current students at IBI who can provide them with
some friendly company during their first months in Newcastle and help them with any small problems that
they may have.
What’s in it for you?
We believe that being a buddy will be rewarding in several ways. As a volunteer, it will be personally
satisfying to know that you are able to help new students. It will also help you make contacts that may be
valuable in your future academic and professional lives. If you are an overseas student, it will give you
another opportunity to practise speaking English.
Responsibilities of buddies
·Telephone and arrange to make contact with the new student.
·Meet the student and show him/her around the campus and the local area. Answer questions about
living in Newcastle and administration procedures at IBI.
·Arrange to meet the new student one morning or afternoon one weekend early in the semester, and
take the student to places that you enjoy in Newcastle.
·Be prepared to take phone calls from the new student to answer further questions that he/she may
have from time to time. Meet to explain information to the new student in person, if required.
·You will be matched to an individual new student. However, if you have friends who are also
buddies, you might prefer to form a support group together. This would mean that you meet the new
students as a group rather than one-on-one.·Being a buddy is voluntary. There is no “requirement” to provide assistance beyond the help outlined
above.
Please note that if you agree to become a peer support buddy, you will be expected to fulfil your role
conscientiously and cheerfully. It will be important to be considerate and reliable so that the student can
feel confident in your support.
1.According to the passage, what benefit can you get from being a buddy?
A.You can learn how to be a confident person.
B.It is easy for you to find some friendly company.
C.You can be rewarded with both money and prizes.
D.It may be helpful for your future studies and career.
2.As a buddy, you need to ________.
A.form a support group with other volunteers at IBI
B.provide assistance in studying each subject after class
C.meet the new student every morning early in the semester
D.help the new student get familiar with his or her surroundings
3.What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?
A.To introduce campus life for new students.
B.To attract potential volunteers to be peer supporters.
C.To offer an opportunity to practise speaking English.
D.To provide some information about studying overseas.
Passage2
The unique pink box in the front yard was originally created to serve those in the community. “Ever
since my teaching partner told me about Little Free Libraries, I have known I wanted to make one,” says
Carrie, a teacher in Illinois. Little Free Libraries, first created in 2009 are a way for people to take a book to
read, or leave one for someone else to find.
Carrie’s husband, Matt, promised to make her one for her birthday in May 2020. In June, she was
found to have breast cancer. Designing and planning the Little Free Library became a helpful distraction(分
散注意力的事).
The book exchanges are often made on different, creative themes. Carrie always posts her adventures
with greyhounds Rose and Flattery, German Shepherd Dog Kuster, and Belgian Shepherd Dog Kiva on theInternet, which make a difference to her life. She decided to create a dog-themed library featuring dog
related artwork, a metal dog on top and a jar of dog treats. The library took her husband almost a month to
build and another few weeks to paint.
The project has given Carrie something positive to focus on as she goes through her treatments. In
addition, it has shown her how many people care about her -from her husband and another relative who
helped construct it, to a nephew who painted the artwork, to friends who donated books. She also has a
better understanding of them. The Little Free Library holds about 25 books. As people stop by, she
discovers another benefit. “After many years of living here, we’re finally getting to know some of our
neighbors.”
4.Why were Little Free Libraries set up in 2009?
A.To collect books to donate.

A.Her battle with cancer.
B.Posts about lovely dogs.

Passage3
Molly Wogan loves dogs so much that she decided to give up a big party of her life to help them.
When she learned many dogs lived in bad conditions or had their lives cut short, she decided to give themback to the dog shelters that had helped her family find their family dogs.
So, instead of having a big party for her initiation ceremony (成人礼), she decided to help the dogs.
As Molly said, “To be an adult means doing good things, but I didn’t want to focus on a party. I didn’t
really need a party, but the dogs need the help.”
Molly was already a shelter volunteer helping out once each week. But she decided to take things to
the next level. Molly started the Precious Animals Wonderful Shelters Project to help the dogs in bad
situations travel across the country to find people who were willing to adopt them. Molly set a target to
raise $2,500 in one year to give to 14 local shelters along with items like toys. Over the year, her project
grew.
Molly ended up volunteering over 400 hours and sold homemade dog toys and treats, and key chains
at 45 different events. In just a year, she raised $38,000. Meanwhile she also took two “transport” trips
from Georgia to her home state of Massachusetts to move 110 at-risk dogs to the Northeast, where she
helped each find a home. With the money she raised, she could get every dog vet visits, food and transport.
Molly hopes to save another 100 dogs this year. She is a wonderful example of a young person
following her heart and taking action to make the world a better place. Molly is not only saving 100 dogs’
lives, but she is changing the lives of those who adopt them as well.

As Grammy-winning violinist Mads Tolling played for parents of children receiving treatment at
Comer Children’s Hospital, Jamie Freedlund spotted a mother who was just taking it all in — she was
listening and there were just tears streaming down her face.
Tolling was invited to play by a charity called Mattea’s Joy, founded by Jamie and her husband, Gary.
The non-profit provides dinner, snack boxes and other support for families with hospitalized children.
The Freedlunds founded Mattea’s Joy in honor of their daughter Mattea Joy Freedlund, who battled a
variety of health challenges during her short but impactful life and died in 2010.
An insurance had been planned for the family before Mattea’s passing and the pair decided to use the
money to cook meals for families whose children were hospitalized at Comer Children’s Hospital. Soon the
dinners became a regular occurrence and their non-profit organization was born. Its mission is to provide
care and comfort to families just like them.
Mattea’s Joy’s current projects include serving dinner to about 100 families a month, distributing
snack boxes to hospitals, and providing packets filled with gift cards and parking passes.
Reese Freedlund, 15, was just 3 years old when her sister Mattea passed away. Their memory of
Mattea lives on in her family’s volunteer work, which is impressed into everything they do. “Mattea’s Joy
has really become a part of our lives,” said Reese. “Even though she passed away, her life was an
inspiration for my parents to create something more out of it.”
Since Mattea’s passing, the Freedlunds have added two boys to their family, Cooper, 11, and Kipton,
