At the age of 12, I withdrew into my bedroom with my guitar. I had neither musical talent many — 1
music lessons had proved that — nor musical training. My fingers ached as I tried to press down on the strings
without making them buzz(发出嗡嗡声). 2 , I worked my way through 2-, 3- and even 5-chord(和弦)
songs and discovered the 3 thrills of these musical notes. No one 4 me to do this. I did this

in something — has 6 me. Fifty years later, that week’s self-directed practice became a model and
7 for almost every meaningful thing I have done since. It makes me understand the 8 between
achievement and accomplishment.
The world favors achievement while ignoring accomplishment. Achievement is the completion of the task
imposed (强加) from the outside ,the 9 being a path to the next task. Accomplishment is the end point ofan activity we have chosen, whose reward is the sudden 10 of fulfilment, the sense of 11
that rises uniquely from absorption in a thing outside ourselves.

For the last few years, I’d been reading about the rapidly changing world of 2 and was

Every year about 40,000 people attempt to climb Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. They 41
with them lots of waste. The 42 might damage the beauty of the place. The glaciers (冰川) are disappearing,
changing the 43 of Kilimanjaro.
Hearing these stories, I’m 44 about the place—other destinations are described as “purer” natural
experiences.
However, I soon 45 that much has changed since the days of disturbing reports of 46 among tons of
rubbish. I find a 47 mountain, with toilets at camps and along the paths. The environmental challenges are 48
but the efforts made by the Tanzania National Park Authority seem to be 49 .
The best of a Kilimanjaro 50 , in my opinion, isn’t reaching the top. Mountains are 51 as spiritual
places by many cultures. This 52 is especially evident on Kilimanjaro as 53 go through five ecosystems(生
态系统)in the space of a few kilometers. At the base is a rainforest. It ends abruptly at 3,000 meters, 54 lands
of low growing plants. Further up, the weather 55 —low clouds envelop the mountainsides, which are covered
with thick grass. I 56 twelve shades of green from where I stand. Above 4, 000 meters is the highland 57 :
gravel (砾石), stones and rocks. 58 you climb into an arctic-like zone with 59 snow and the glaciers that
may soon disappear.
Does Kilimanjaro 60 its reputation as a crowded mountain with lines of tourists ruining the atmosphere of
peace? I found the opposite to be true.
