The Pros and Cons of the Internet
In modern society, the Internet has become an essential part of our daily lives. It has brought us a lot of
convenience and opportunities, but at the same time, it also has some disadvantages.
The Internet offers numerous benefits. Firstly, it is a vast source of information. Whenever I have questions
about my schoolwork, like solving a difficult math problem or understanding a historical event, a quick search on
the Internet provides me with a wealth of answers. I can access online libraries, educational websites, and digital
books. It has made learning more accessible and efficient.
Secondly, the Internet has transformed communication. I can easily keep in touch with my friends who live faraway. Through instant messaging apps and video calls, we can chat, share our daily lives, and even play online
games together. Social media platforms also allow me to connect with people from different parts of the world,
broadening my horizons and understanding of different cultures.
Moreover, the Internet provides great entertainment. I enjoy watching movies, listening to music, and playing
online games in my free time. These forms of entertainment help me relax and relieve stress after a long day of
studying.
However, the Internet also has its drawbacks. One of the biggest problems is the presence of false information.
Sometimes, I come across articles or posts that are not true. It can be difficult to tell which information is reliable,
and this might mislead us.
Another issue is online addiction. I have noticed that some of my classmates spend too much time playing
games or browsing social media. They neglect their studies and physical activities. This not only affects their
academic performance but also their health.
In addition, the Internet can pose risks to privacy. Personal information might be leaked, and we may receive
unwanted advertisements or even be targeted by online fraud.
In conclusion, the Internet is like a double-edged sword. It brings us advantages such as easy access to
information, convenient communication, and various forms of entertainment. But we also need to be aware of its
disadvantages, like false information, addiction, and privacy concerns. We should use the Internet wisely to make
the most of its benefits while avoiding its potential pitfalls.

Safer Internet Day is on the second Tuesday of February every year. On this day, people in around 170
countries take part in activities to try to make the Internet a safer place for children and young people.
Safer Internet Day celebrates all the great things about being online. We can use the Internet to learn new
things, video call family members who live far away, chat to friends, listen to music, watch videos and play games.
But there can also be dangers when we are online. Online bullying (霸凌) is when someone uses the Internet to
make another person feel bad, often with bad messages on messaging apps or social media (社交媒体). Online
bullying can happen in games too, when players post unkind messages in the chat box.
On Safer Internet Day in the UK, children do activities at school, at home, in youth groups and in other
places. They do quizzes and worksheets (小测试和练习题), read stories, watch films, make posters and have
discussions about how to stay safe online.
Here are some tips on now to stay safe online:
★ If you see something bad, tell an adult. If you see something online that makes you scared or worried, or if
you know that someone is being bullied, tell a parent, a teacher or another adult who you trust. If someone is
unkind while you are playing a game, an adult can help you report or block that player.
★ Don’t meet people who you only know online. It’s possible that people you meet online aren’t really who
they say they are. It can be dangerous to go to meet them in real life.
★ Don’t believe everything you read online! Not everything you read online is true. When you look for
information, make sure that you use a website you can trust. And only share things with your friends if you know
that they are true.

While the mobile Internet is changing the way we live, more and more old people in China are getting in on
the digital world, though they still have some trouble.
Yang Su, a 61-year-old professional micro vlogger (专业微博博主), is among them. With more than 2.3
million followers on China’s famous short video app “Douyin”, his videos have been watched by over 1 million
times.
“Three years ago, my son put a short video of me playing the piano at home on ‘Douyin’, and hours later it
was played over 1 million times,” Yang remembered.
After graduating from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, he was a pianist of the Shenzhen Symphony
Orchestra (交响乐团). The Internet has opened a door to a whole new world for him. For the past three years, he
has filmed over 700 short videos and opened an official account on social platform WeChat to share articles and
offer online piano lessons.
It’s not easy for him to learn how to film a video, something that might not be easy even for young people.
Spending a long time staring at the sheet music (活页乐谱) always causes eye soreness, and he needs to play
through the music since he doesn’t know how to edit (编辑) and cut clips. His child helps him a lot later. “The
Internet has opened the door to a new world,” Yang said. “I always keep myself busy and feel very young at my
age.”
However, do other old people get used to the digital world like Yang? Ding Qiulin is a 73-year-old man from
Hunan. “I got my smartphone more than one year ago, but I only use WeChat for video calls,” he said. Ding finds it
hard to learn to use other apps.
▲ Luo Xu, a post-90s volunteer, joined a non-profit organization in Beijing nine years ago to teach old
people how to use the Internet. “While I am helping people aged between 50 and 90 years old, I have a strong
feeling of satisfaction (满足),” Luo said.

A.By telling a story. B.By using an example.
C.By asking a question. D.By using numbers.
2.Which of the following can we put in “ ▲ ”?
A.In fact, many other old people have the same feeling as Ding.
B.However, many young people find it hard to teach the old to use the Internet.
C.As a result, old people have to spend much time learning to use the smartphone.
D.Luckily, younger people are building a bridge between the digital world and the old.3.What did Luo Xu think of his work in the non-profit (非营利性的) organization?
A.Relaxing. B.Difficult. C.Meaningful. D.Boring.
4.Why does the writer write the passage?
A.To tell us we should learn to make short videos like Yang.
B.To show the mobile Internet makes a great difference to the old.
C.To explain why the mobile Internet is popular in our country.

Is gaming good or bad?
If you are a kid who enjoys playing video games, you must have argued with your parents at least once
about the impact of gaming. Your parents might say that video games are bad for you. They may worsen your eyes,
lower your academic performance, and could lead to health problems. As a kid, you probably argue that video
games allow you to socialize with your friends, improve your coordination (协调) and memory, and even give you
a way to make money through streaming platforms. Could you both be right?
One study of game players showed that 35 percent of high school and college students have missed school
or work because of games. Some other studies have shown that playing video games leads to poor concentration in
school or at work. In my seventh-grade science fair study, elementary and high school kids playing games had
lower test accuracy, slower reflexes (条件反射), less pain awareness and lower response times to threatening
sounds during and after having played video games.
On the other hand, a study conducted by Cheryl Olson interviewed 1,000 public school students and found
that video games can help kids develop problem-solving skills, make friends, show leadership, and spark creativity.
They can also be highly educational, because some games involve problem-solving skills or teach things like
history, geography, or culture.
So, I bet you’re wondering ... should I play video games or not? Who is right?
I think kids and parents can both win this argument. How? Most of the negative impacts of video games
happen when kids play for too long, so play moderately (适度地). Here’s how to do that.
First, talk with your parents and take breaks from your gaming to help around the house or to get some fresh
air. Second, try to find video games that are both fun and educational. Third, if you wear a headset to play, take it
off every few minutes or leave one ear free so you can hear your surroundings. Fourth, there are also many games
that get you up out of your seat. Finally, find some games that you can play with your parents, and you just might
surprise them with how enjoyable they are. They may end up having more fun than you!
What do you think? Are the good things about video games enough to outweigh the bad?
1.What’s the main idea of paragraph 1?
A.The reasons why playing games is bad for kids.
B.Parents and kids hold different opinions towards video games.
C.Playing games can cause arguments between parents and their children.
D.A story about kids’ arguing with their parents about playing video games.2.Cheryl Olsen’s study is mentioned to ________.
A.express the author’s attitude towards playing video games
B.show the negative impact playing video games can have
C.show the positive impact playing video games can have
D.share the findings of the latest research about video games
3.According to the article, what is NOT the disadvantages video games bring to kids?
A.They may cause harm to kids’ eyesight.
B.They may make kids difficult to focus on study.
C.They may damage kids’ coordination and memory.
D.They may put kids in danger because of less response time.
4.The author is most likely to support ________.
A.playing educational games without breaks
B.always wearing a headset when playing games
C.playing active games which parents can take part in
D.remaining seated the whole time while leaving one ear free from your headset

It’s the end of class. When the bell rings, students of Luohu Foreign Languages School in Shenzhen quickly
take out their cell-phones. They want to log on (登录) to their microblogs (微博) to check the funny things that
have happened in the last hour.
Since last year, the trend (潮流) of microblogging has swept the country. Recent surveys show that most
students in middle schools have a microblog, and some even update(更新) their blogs over five times per day.
“We learn many fresh and interesting things on microblogs and they have become popular topics in class,”
said Liang Jianmin, 14, a student at Harbin No 3 Middle School. “If you do not know about them, you are out of
the loop (被排挤在圈外).”
It is also a great place for students to let out stress. “My parents always ask me to study hard, and encourage
me before exams, but actually it adds pressure (压力),” said Zhang Yazhe, 15, a student in Luohu Foreign
Languages School. “When I share these feelings on my microblog, I get many replies from friends in the same
situation, which makes me feel better.”
But parents are worried that microblogging could be a waste of time. Some misleading(误导性的)
messages may even cause danger to kids, they said.
Shen Mingde, a professor at the China Education Association, suggests parents not worry too much as long
as kids are not crazy about microblogging. Instead, it can become a window for parents to understand their
children.
“If parents can read their children’s microblogs, they’ll know their thoughts, thus (因而) leading to better
communication and solutions to problems,” he said.
Micro blogging tips for kids
★1. Don’t microblog for more than one hour a day.★2. Never microblog in class.

Did you know that when you surf the web, websites in some countries put secret software on your computer?
Social media (媒体) sites also collect your personal information. What will they do to your information?
First, companies collect and store your online information. With this information, they’ll find out where you
live, what websites you visit and what you do online and they can even guess if you are a man or woman, how old
you are and your interests. In the end, the companies use this information to decide which ads (广告) will be sent to
you.
Your personal information could also be collected and sold to other businesses. A business that collects,
studies and sells personal information is called a data broker. When data brokers sell your information, a lot of
different companies will know your online habits. Then these companies will send ads or other websites to you.
What’s worse when you use your social media, it can also collect your information. The pictures and videos
that you shared on social media could cause you problems or even put you in danger. If someone knows too muchabout you, they may use your user’s name and your password to buy things online and post messages while
pretending (假装) to be you.
However, it’s not all bad news. The law about inter is finally changing. In the European Union, for example,
they have introduced (引入) the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) to protect internet users’ information.
If other countries do the same, the internet could soon be a much safer place.

D.No countries would follow the law about the internet safety.
5.What does the writer think of the Internet?
A.Useful but hopeless. B.Dangerous and hopeless.
C.Worrying but hopeful. D.Hopeful and useful.
You might have heard about identity theft ( 身份盗窃): it means a thief gets enough of someone’s
information to commit fraud (诈骗). Why should people care about it? Because recovering a stolen identity can be
a hard process. Imagine that someone opens a credit card in your name, gets a cell phone number in your name, or
buys things using a credit card that has your name on it.
ID thieves can be creative about getting your information. There are some low-tech ways they get it:
sometimes they steal rubbish, going through it to find personal information, or they steal mail.
There are high-tech ways, too: ID thieves might put software onto your computer secretly. The software,
called badware, let a thief see everything on your computer, and record everything you type on your computer.
Unluckily, even if you’re really careful with your personal information, thieves can still get your personal
information. Sometimes, they get into computer systems at shops, schools, hospitals or businesses. They look for
personal information to use or sell to other thieves.
It’s pretty easy for you and your family to stop a thief stealing your identity. You can start with the low-tech
defenses (防御). Be careful with your mail and rubbish. And be sure to take care of your wallet, or your backpack.
It’s especially important not to carry your Social Security card with you. Keep it in a safe place at home.
Practice some higher-tech defenses, too: protect your computer by turning on an up-to-date firewall (防火墙).Once you’re online, be careful with your personal information. When you get emails or pop-ups on your computer,
don’t respond automatically (自动响应). Stop and think before you click—it could help keep your information
private, and keep badware off your computer.

C.Identity theft happens more commonly to adults because they aren’t good at using computers.
D.Identity theft is an easy problem that can be dealt within a second.
5.What’s the structure of the passage?
A. B.
C. D.

Sometimes we get some “surprises” on our phone. 1 In fact, this magic, mind-reading recommend
(推荐) depends on data (数据).
Data is no longer only about numbers, but information about almost every part of life: where we go,what we
do and what we like and dislike. 32
Big Data makes life easier. The smart traffic system (交通系统) in Los Angeles is a good example. It
collects real-time traffic data and controls 4,500 traffic lights in the system. 2 A supermarket namedTesco will recommend products (产品) to their customers (顾客) on its website after knowing their shopping
habits. Its app on a mobile phone even guides customers around super-markets to find what they want. 34
However, Big Data causes serious problems about how we protect our privacy (隐私). We should learn to
protect our privacy in the Big Data Age.
3 What we should do is to make the best use of it.
A.Though there are bad sides, Big Data is helpful in people’s lives in some ways.
B.Everything seems possible to be searched in Big Data Age.
C.Together is called Big Data.
D.If an accident happens, the system will change the lights near there to control the traffic.
E.For example, after you mark a song as a favorite on a music app, it recommends songs of the same kind to you.
F.If you search the products, you will find other products you don’t like.
G.It can also give advice on what they may like to buy.

For more than a month, the world has been very excited about a new AI model called DeepSeek-R1. The
company behind it, also called Deep Seek, is a business based in Hangzhou, Zhejiang.
The new AI first appeared on Jan 20. In just one week, it beat OpenAI’s ChatGPT and became number one
free application (应用) in the App Store. What is so special about it?
According to Deep Seek, the new AI model is as good at difficult activities like math as other big-time
models. But it needs much less computing power (算力) to do that. It is also the cheapest of its kind and took only
about 5.57 million US dollars (40.58million yuan) to make. That is way less than the hundreds of millions or even
billions that US businesses have to spend on making similar AI models, said Marc Andreessen, a technology expert
in the US.
The achievement (成就) was largely due to an idea the scientist had while they trained it. Instead of using the
traditional ways, Deep Seek mainly uses Reinforcement Learning (RL, 强化学习). It helps AI learn by working
out the right way to do things on its own to get points. This makes R1 better at reasoning and solving hard
problems.
What's more, DeepSeek-R1 is open-source (开源的). Everyone is free to get a copy of its code (代码). They
can also change the code to meet their own needs. Being open-source is very important for sharing knowledge and
making technology better for everyone, said Liang Wenfeng, who set up Deep Seek.
1.What is one of the strong points of DeepSeek-R1 compared to other AI models?
A.It’s cheaper to develop. B.It’s smarter than others.
C.It’s better at difficult activities. D.It’s quicker in solving problems.
2.How does DeepSeek-R1 learn?
A.In a traditional way. B.Through solving hard problems.
C.By finding the right way to do things by itself. D.By following all kinds of orders from its creators.
3.Why is it important that DeepSeek-R1 is open-source?
A.It makes AI safer. B.It creates new knowledge.C.It makes AI cheaper. D.It makes the use of AI wider.
4.What is the passage mainly about?
A.The importance of open-source code. B.The challenges faced by DeepSeek-R1.
C.The differences between AI models. D.The introduction to DeepSeek-R1.

In recent years, WeChat is becoming more and more popular in China. Many people send messages using
WeChat. We use it in our work, life and even study.
Mr. Guo is a teacher from Chongqing. He asked his students to hand in (上交) their homework using a QR
code (二维码). “When students finish the homework, they keep it on WeChat. Then, each student makes his own
QR code and gives it to me. So, I can check (检查) their homework everywhere on my computer or telephone.
