Joking can be a cheerful thing. However, sometimes people may see it differently. Some people may get
hurt if there are too many jokes. When you show you can’t accept the jokes, the jokes might get worse.
We should consider the relationships when joking. Close friends usually enjoy teasing (开玩笑). Healthy
teasing can usually make people relaxed. When both sides know it’s just joking, they can understand each other
better. The environment is also important for close relationships. It doesn’t matter when your sister calls your
nickname (绰号) at home. However, it’s quite bad when a classmate shouts it out at school.
When making a joke, we often see the funny side of it. But others may see it in a different way. Sometimes
we forget the other person may not find it funny. People have different life experiences, so they understand jokes
differently. For example, imagine someone not swimming at a pool party. Others might tease him or her about
being unable to swim. But maybe that person is just afraid of water. Keep in mind that people may have their own
reasons for not seeing the funny side.
It’s a good way to build good friendships by respecting others. In daily life, we should pay attention to our
words when playing jokes.
1.What may happen if there are too many jokes?
2.How do people usually feel about healthy teasing?
3.What is also important for close relationships?4.Why do people understand jokes differently?
5.How can we build good relationships?
Every now and then, we all get sick. Then we usually go to see a doctor. Doctors know a lot about what
makes us sick. They may give us some medicine to take. The medicine often makes us well again.
But sometimes the doctor’s medicine doesn’t work. This happened to one man. He was in hospital, but he
was not getting well. Then he found a new “doctor” inside himself. This “doctor” has his own sense of humor (幽
默感). He saw funny films and read funny books. And something wonderful happened. Laughing took away his
pain. His own happy feelings helped him feel well again. He said laughing was his best “medicine”. His doctor
thought so, too.
The story may surprise you, but more and more people are getting well in this way. So visit the “doctor”
inside your own head and you can stay happy and healthy.
1.What do we usually do if we are sick?(不超过10个词)
2.What was the best medicine for the sick man?(不超过5个词)

All people have feelings. Feelings are reactions (反应) to other people and things that happen. People can
have different feelings about the same dung.
You have many different kinds of feelings. Our faces show how we feel. For example, when you lose
something, your face probably looks sad. When you find what you lose, your face will probably look happy.
We also show our feelings by what we say and do. It’s important to show feelings and talk about them.
However, we must have self-control over how we do that. Self-control means having control over your feelings
and actions. When you feel angry, you can stay angry, or you can use self-control to cool off.
Here are some ways to control your feelings.
★Take some deep breaths to calm down.

Sometimes.. .
By Paul Green
Sometimes I feel lonely,
Like when I’m by myself and full of loneliness.
When I’m like that, I call a friend.
My lonely mood soon disappears.
Sometimes I feel excited,
Like when I have some news I have to share!
My friends open their ears to me.
They always listen, talk, and care.
Sometimes I feel so sad,
Like when my world is cold and darkest blue.
At those times my friends let me know.
They’re with me, standing strong and true.Sometimes I feel confused,
Like when I just don’t know how I should feel.
My friends then help me figure out
What’s right and wrong and what’s fake and real!

Feelings are part of our lives. We feel happy, sad, angry and scared. It is important to know how to
understand and manage (管理) them. When we are happy, we can share our joy with others. If we are sad, we can
talk to a friend. When we are angry, we should take a break and calm down. If we are scared, we can find
someone to help us. Understanding and managing our own feelings help us be stronger.
There are different kinds of feelings like anger, frustration (挫败), worry and sadness. We can also have
feelings like excitement, happiness and joy. These feelings can be difficult to control and sometimes stop us from
doing things we need to do, like playing and working.
Some Good Ways to Calm Down
Talking to a trusted adult could help.
Getting some fresh air outside.Spending some time by yourself: reading, sleeping or listening to music.
Splashing (泼洒) a little bit of cold water on your face.
Having a cool drink of water.
Doing exercise also helps let some of the big feelings out.
Taking big deep breaths slowly in and out could help too.
Control Our Feelings
Our feelings help us understand ourselves and the people around us better. It’s important
to talk about our feelings because it helps us grow and have good relations with others. By
learning how to deal with our feelings, we can face challenges and be true to ourselves.
Follow our hearts. Pay attention to our feelings. No matter how good something looks, if
it doesn’t feel right, walk away. We’ll find our hearts are much wiser than our brains.

2.What may happen sometimes if we can’t control our feelings?
3.How do we calm down when we have big feelings according to the text?(One example is OK.)
4.Why do we need to talk about our feelings?
5.What do you usually do when you are stressed? Why?
A famous teacher went to a village to give a talk. He taught people about forgiveness (宽恕). He said anger
(愤怒) was like fire. It could make people upset. He advised them to stay away from anger and learn to forgive.
Jeff got angry quite easily. When he listened to this, he stood up and said, “What you’re saying is meaningless.”
The teacher heard him but didn’t reply to him. He was as peaceful as before and went on his talk. After he got
home, Jeff kept thinking about the teacher’s words. As his anger died down (减弱) slowly, he was sorry for his
words and action. So Jeff went to the teacher and said sorry to him. However, the teacher looked at him in surprise
and asked, “Who are you? Why do you say sorry to me?” “You don’t remember me? I said some unkind words
and did something wrong to you. I come to ask for your forgiveness.” said Jeff. The teacher said, “Don’t talk
about that—that’s history. We should move forward and improve our present (现在) by doing good things.”
根据短文内容,回答下列问题。
1.Who taught people about forgiveness in the village?2.What did the teacher advise people to do?
3.Why did Jeff get angry after hearing what the teacher said?

When you think of a creative person, you might picture someone painting a picture or writing a poem—but
you don’t need to be an artist or poet to be creative. Singing in the shower, inventing a new after-school snack, or
even doodling (乱画) in your notebook are all creative acts. And joining in these activities brings many benefits:
studies show they can improve your focus, help you relax, and reduce anxiety. What’s more, creativity also has
positive effects on your physical health.
For your mood (情绪), creativity is like a magic pill. Painting, drawing, or just looking at art works can
lower your cortisol (皮质醇)—the stress hormone (荷尔蒙) that makes you feel anxious. So next time you’re
nervous before an exam, try doodling something fun or looking at art online. It will help you calm down.
When it comes to your heart, creativity can be a great helper. It can lower your blood pressure, making it
easier for your heart to pump blood around your body. This is especially good for people with heart problems, and
even simple creative activities work.
Your brain is another big winner when you get creative. Creativity sharpens your focus and mental
flexibility (灵活性), letting you think in different ways and come up with new ideas—useful for tricky math
problems or essay brainstorming. It keeps the brain young and stops older adults’ cognitive decline (认知下降).
Last but not least, your nervous system (神经系统) benefits too. Creativity can better its pain-managing
ability. If you suffer from chronic (慢性的) pain, studies show that creative activities like writing music or even
singing your favorite tunes can help reduce discomfort.
Creativity is for everyone. Try it—you’ll help your body and mind. Give it a try, and you might find a new
passion that makes you feel great!
1.What are creative acts?
2.When you’re nervous before an exam, what can you do?3.Why is creativity good for people with heart problems?
4.What would you like to do to develop your creativity? And why? (Please give at least two reasons.)

Are you feeling a little upset? Some spoons of vinegar (醋) may help.
At a university in the US, scientists did an experiment (实验) on this. Twenty-eight people took part in it.
The scientists put them into two groups. Every day, people in the first group had four spoons of vinegar. Those in
the second group took one pill (药丸). Inside the pill, there was just a little vinegar.
Four weeks later, the scientists tested everyone. The sad feelings of them went down by 42 percent for the
first group and 18 percent for the second. Also, the level (水平) of vitamin B3 went up by 86 percent for everyone
in the first group. The scientists said having more vitamin B3 could help reduce (减少) sadness.
However, the scientists only studied 28 people for this experiment. In the future, they will need to test more
people to show their findings.

Many social media posts (社交媒体帖子) may let you believe that everyone is happy all the time, but being
happy all the time is not possible.
As a teenager, you probably hope to get good grades in an exam or to win the most important basketball
game, but it doesn’t often happen. Good results make you happy and bad results make you sad. But sadness can
drive you to improve yourself next time.
However, when people get into sadness for a long time and it starts to affect (影响) their lives, it’s called
depression (抑郁). You don’t want to get out of bed. You don’t feel like studying or going out with your friends. I
remember the same feeling when my dog Rebel died in an accident. I remember that he followed me to school.
Now he was gone, and I lost all interests to do anything. My parents told me dogs don’t live forever. What’s more,
Rebel had a good life. If I had a good life, Rebel must be happy, too.
Depression is not a person’s mistake. It’s normal to feel sad sometimes. Many great people, like the comedy
actor Jim Carrey, once got depressed. But you should know what to do to stop depression or make yourself less
depressed.
When you feel down, you must not keep yourself away from the world. Try to share your feelings with a
family member or a good friend. Staying at home by yourself will make you more lonely. You should stand up,
open the window, and throw away the sadness.
1.What can sadness drive teenagers to do?
2.What happened to the writer after his dog died?
3.What does Jim Carrey’s example tell us?
4.What do you think depressed teenagers should do? Write 30 words or more.
When your friend has a bad day, what will you do to comfort him or her? Hugging can help them feel
better, Time reported.
According to scientists from Carnegie Melon University in the US, hugs can be good for a person’s mood
and stress levels. Hugging can increase positive(积极的)feelings and reduce negative(消极的)feelings.
Researchers talked to about 400 people. They asked them about their mood, whether they had any conflicts
(冲突)with others and if they had a hug that day. They found that when people experienced conflicts but didn’t get any hugs, they reported more negative
feelings. But when people had both on the same day, they reported more positive feelings and fewer negative
feelings.
When you receive a hug, your body releases a certain hormone(荷尔蒙). This hormone lowers blood
pressure, as well as reduces stress and anxiety(焦虑), Michael Murphy from Carnegie Melon told Time.
Of course, hugging is not the only way to comfort others. People sometimes give advice or just try to solve
the other person’s problems directly. However, doing these things might make people feel like they’re being
criticized(批评), But physical contact like hugging “makes people feel like they are cared about and have
someone who is there for them,” Murphy said. “But that doesn’t make any judgments(about right or wrong).”

Dear head teachers, teachers and fellow students, I’m very proud that you have chosen me to speak to you
today.
We will finish junior high soon. Many students are worried about the future. School is hard. We all think
that success at school is important for our future.
Some of us are lucky. We are good at studying. I am very lucky. My teachers say that I am a very good
student I especially love studying maths. It is a very important subject. You need it for physics or if you want to be
an engineer. I want to be an engineer. Engineer and scientists are important for our country’s future.
My classmates and I are all a bit sad to be leaving junior high. But we are also excited about taking a new
step in our lives. Our future lives and jobs get closer every day.
The English say, “The future is what you make it!” I like this saying. It means that we control the future. Itreminds us to try our best, and to never give up. I really think we can all make a wonderful future if remember
this.

Often people will do things to anger you. When this happens, it’s not good to react immediately, but after
you’ve calmed down, look at the positive (积极的) qualities in that person.
I’m not asking you to be a doormat (受气包) or simply look at the positive qualities when someone is being
unkind to you. Instead, I’m suggesting that you take a look at the positive qualities in addition to everything else.
Here’s an example: Let’s say you’re taking your son or daughter to a basketball game. You’ re in the line and the
guy behind you, who is also with his child, starts pushing. You ask him to back off and he gets angry, and perhaps
starts shouting. All of this is taking place in front of your child and his child.
Finally things calm down. Perhaps you’ re still angry and silently cursing (咒骂) him as you sit in your
chair. But can you see anything positive in that person? Most people would say no. But at least he was trying to
spend some time with his kid just like you did. You don’t know anything else about the person, but you just find
some positıve qualities.
Too often we focus only on a person’s negative (消极的) qualities and forget the good things. By looking at
the positive, you get your mind to move its attention. It now begins to see things differently and thus (所以) sends
a different message and different energy to your sense. This will bring positive situations to you. It’s that oldsaying:” What goes around comes around. “ You focus on the good things in other people, and other people will
see the good things in you and you’ ll attract positive situations in your life. For example: 4. .
When you do this you also let out the anger and unhappiness, thus creating more positive energy. Try doing
this with people you know and don’t know. Creating positive energy is important to your success and happiness.
Let’s face it. You certainly don’t want negative energy or a negative lifestyle.
1.What should you do when a person anger you according to the passage?
2.In the writer’s opinion, what is the positive quality of the guy?
3.What is going to happen if you focus on the good things in other people?
4.Give an example of “What goes around comes around” which happened in your life.
5.Summarize (总结) the passage within 30 words.

Mental toughness
Have you ever wondered what makes someone a top student? Or a good sportsman? Why do some people
achieve their goals while others fail? Usually the answers are about the talent (天赋). He must be the smartest
student in the class. He’s faster than everyone else on the team. But we all know there is more to the story than
that.
In fact, studies suggest that only 30% of your achievement comes from talent. What makes a bigger
difference is mental toughness.
Mental toughness is a state of mind that you learn and earn through hard work, persistence (坚持不懈), and
patience. It centers on your ability to effectively (有效地) manage negative emotions like anger, fear, and sadness
so they don’t control you and lead you to make bad decisions. It also shows your persistence and resilience (韧性)
in moments of hardship.
Do you want to learn how to become mentally tougher? Here are some tips for you.
First, get an emotional trashcan. The point of having the trashcan is to throw away your doubts, worries,
and fears to have better rest and mental clarity. You could try writing a diary, or find a creative outlet for your
emotions, or reach out to a doctor. Trashing those bad thoughts and dealing with them in a healthy manner givesyou a chance to think about them, and get to a solution.
Second, exercise. Even though physical exercise is mostly for your physical benefits, it has mental benefits
too. Physical exercise helps you create discipline (自制力). The discipline of the mind is necessary for developing
your mental toughness.
Next, learn how to lose gracefully (优雅地). No matter how unpleasant it might be, failure can be the final
teacher. Failure can make you feel bad, which may keep you from learning from your mistakes. Take the time to
sit with your thoughts and work through the feelings that you’re experiencing. Ask yourself: what is the lesson
here and how do I move forward? Once you’re able to take responsibility for yourself, it’s easier to move forward
and not to make those same mistakes a second time.
Last but not least, practice gratitude (感恩), even when you’re going through a difficult time. When you
pay attention to what to be thankful for, you’ll find happiness and lightness take hold within your heart. Being
grateful and having an open heart help you to focus on your goals and dreams. So you can go forth and achieve
them.
Once you’ve got mental toughness, any difficulty in your way will be a chance to help you grow. It will
make you more successful at the things you choose to do. You will be able to improve your life in several different
ways.
1.Which is more important for people to achieve their goals, talent or mental toughness?
2.What is mental toughness?
3.What is the passage mainly about?
