Have you ever visited Hukou Waterfall? Hukou Waterfall is always compared to a shining pearl (明珠) in
the middle reaches of the Yellow River.
When the Yellow River runs through mountains to Hukou, the river narrows (变窄) from 300 meters to just
over 50 meters. The water suddenly falls into a deep pool. As a result, a wonderful waterfall appears. It seems that
the water pours into a big pot, which is how it got the name “Hukou”.
The power of the waterfall is tremendous (巨大的) when it falls, so it is hard for you to get close to the
main waterfall. Looking from far away, you can enjoy the amazing fog-covered water. The beauty cannot be
described in words. You cannot know unless you visit it in person.
There are four wonders of Hukou, “smoking in water”, “colourful bridge to the sky”, “dragons playing with
waves” and “thunder generated from valley stream”. The waterfall flies straight down with water splashing (溅),
clouds and mist rising. Under the sunlight, you will see a rainbow hanging over the waterfall. The poem “Chant to
Hukou” written by Zhang Yingchun in the Ming Dynasty describes the beauty of “colourful bridge to the sky”.
The view of Hukou Waterfall changes according to the seasons. So you can enjoy its special beauty from
spring to winter.

Have you ever been to Dongting Lake? It’s famous as “800-li Dongting Lake”. Dongting Lake is in the
north of Hunan Province. It is about 2,625 square kilometres in size. It is one of the five largest freshwater lakes in
China. Every year, thousands of tourists from all over the world come to Yueyang in order to enjoy the beautiful
sights around Dongting Lake.
With the development of our society, protecting Dongting Lake has become a hot topic (话题). In fact,
people of Yueyang are trying to improve the environment of the lake. On the one hand, they set up East Dongting
Lake Nature Reserve in 1982. It provides a good place for birds and rare (珍稀的) animals. If you go there, you
can see birds flying and milu deer (麋鹿) eating grass in East Dongting Lake Nature Reserve. On the other hand,
factories mustn’t put wastewater into the lake. Fishes are living in the clean water. At the same time, they plant
colourful flowers and green trees along Dongting Lake. It is nice for people to go there when flowers come out
and leaves turn green.
Dongting Lake is the mother lake in Hunan Province. Each of us should try our best to protect it.
1.Where is Dongting Lake?
2.Why do many tourists come to Yueyang every year?
3.What can you see if you go to East Dongting Lake Nature Reserve?

Chogori (乔戈里峰) stands on the Chinese-Pakistan border. Chogori is from the Tajik language, it means
“high, great and magnificent”. Internationally, it is better known as K2. Chogori is about 8,611 meters high, and itis the second highest mountain in the world.
And Chogori is not Qomolangma. On the one hand, Chogori is a steeper (更陡峭的) and more dangerous
peak. In fact, it is the most difficult peak to reach in the world. The first two people to reach the top of Chogori—
Lino Lacedelli and Achille Compagnoni from Italy—did it in 1954. In 1986, the first woman did it too. Since
1954, only 281 people have reached the top, and 49 others have been killed (However, Qomolangma has been
reached 3,000 times and only 15 climbers lost their lives). Of all the over 8,000-meter-high peaks, it has the
highest death rate.
On the other hand, this great peak is for professional climbers only. Here, no commercial (商业的)
climbing organization will provide you with any services, and even top-class climbers will choose their climbing
partners with a particularly eagle (鹰) eye. The leader of a Japanese K2 team said when organizing his team in
1982, “We are professional climbers, and all know that if we run into trouble at a height of 8,000 meters on K2, it
is impossible to get help. If you do not have the confidence and determination (决心) to face possible trouble, you
should not go!”
This is Chogori! In the eyes of the top-class climbers, it is the most beautiful peak, and it is the danger that
attracts them.
1.Where is Chogori?
2.What’s the height of Chogori?
3.When did the first two people reach the top of Chogori?
4.Which is more difficult and dangerous to reach, Qomolangma or Chogori?

Rivers are one of our most important natural resources(自然资源). Many of the world’s great cities are
located on rivers, and almost every country has at least one river flowing through. That plays an important part in
the lives of its people.
Most rivers begin in mountains and end in the oceans. Since the beginning of history, people have used
rivers for transportation. The longest one in the USA is the Mississippi. The lifeline of Egypt is Nile. To the
people of India, the Ganges is great, but it is also important for transportation. Ships can travel along it for a
thousand miles. The greatest of all for navigation(航海), however, is the Amazon in Brazil. It is so wide and sodeep that large ships can go about two thousand miles upon it.
Besides transportation, rivers give food to eat, water to drink, water for crops, and chances for fun and
recreation for people who live along their banks. In order to increase the supply of water for crops, engineers
sometimes build a dam(大坝)across a river and let a lake from behind the dam. Then people can use the water
not only to irrigate(灌溉)their field but also to make electricity for their homes and industries. However, large
cities and industries that are located upon rivers often make problems. As the cities grow in size and industries
increase in number, the water in the rivers becomes polluted. People are learning the importance, however, of
doing more to keep their rivers clean if they want to enjoy the benefits of the natural resources.
1.How many rivers does almost every country have flowing through?
2.Where do most rivers begin?
3.What is the greatest river for navigation?
4.Can people use the water from the dam to make electricity?
5.Why is the water in the river polluted?

A new bridge—the biggest of its kind ever—started to be used on September 28 in China. The Huajiang
Grand Canyon Bridge is in Guizhou Province, a mountainous area in China. It is now the tallest bridge in the
world, standing 625 metres high above the Beipan River.
This great engineering work also has the longest main part among bridges built in rough mountain areas.

China is very good at building bridges. A website called highestbridges.com says the 18 tallest bridges in
the world are all built or being built in China. The top three are in Guizhou, which also has over 32,000 other
bridges. Almost half of the world’s 100 tallest bridges are there.
The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge also uses advanced technology, like a special design to fight strong
winds. The spokesperson hopes it will become a popular place for visitors, drawing over one million people every
year. It has a cafe, a geological museum and a bungee-jumping spot.1.Where is the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge?

The old lanes (巷子) of the Beijing hutongs, many were hundreds of years ago during the Ming and Qing
dynasties. They keep not only the traditional culture but also the way of life in the past. People can go shopping,
eat delicious food and watch the street life by visiting the Beijing hutongs. What’s more, it’s a good way to learn

compounds are called siheyuan, meaning “four joined-together courtyard.” The hutongs have interesting names,
which tell their origin (起源), location or history. They are in these gray lanes where kids talk and play.
One of China’s most famous writers, Laoshe, was born in siheyuan in the west of the city. The memories of
his childhood in hutongs were so important to him that even after he had been away from Beijing for more than 20
years, he still clearly remembered them and wrote them into a novel called Four Generations under One Roof.
Now, Beijing still has about 400,000 siheyuan for people to live in. However, most hutongs are in great
danger because people always want to build new buildings. So, we should try our best to protect Beijing hutongs,
the treasure of traditional culture.

Mutianyu Great Wall is one of the most popular parts of the Great Wall. It lies to the north of Beijing City.
Tourists can visit it all year round, but the best time is April, May, September, and October.
Last week, I visited Mutianyu Great Wall with my parents. At first, I just thought it was not as busy as
Badaling Great Wall. I didn’t think it would be much fun. But in fact, I really enjoyed myself there!
The first interesting part was taking a chairlift (吊椅) up to the wall. Of course, you can also take the cable
car (缆车). It makes it easier for children and old people to climb the wall. The next interesting part was walking
along the wall. When you’re on the wall, you’ll be surprised at the beautiful sights. But the most interesting part of
the trip was the ride. You can take a slide (滑梯) down from the wall. It takes about two or three minutes to slide
all the way down. That’s why more and more people like to visit Mutianyu Great Wall.
The secret of an enjoyable visit is to visit the wall early. Most people visit the wall on a day trip by coach
(长途汽车) from the city of Beijing. If you arrive before the first coaches you may be able to enjoy the sights of
the wall by yourself. It’s really wonderful. Anyway, you can’t miss Mutianyu Great Wall when you stay in
Beijing.

Have you learned about axial symmetry in math? If a city shows axial symmetry, its central axis is the key
line. In July, 2024, the “Beijing Central Axis: A Building Ensemble Exhibiting the Ideal Order of the Chinese
Capital” was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, becoming China’s 59th World Heritage Site.
The Beijing Central Axis has a group of buildings and historical sites that shape Beijing’s old city. Running
7.8 kilometers from north to south in central Beijing, this area includes 15 key parts, such as the Bell and Drum
Towers in the north and Yongdingmen Gate in the south.
The building of the Beijing Central Axis began in the 13th century and took shape in the 16th century.
According to Lyu Zhou, director of the National Heritage Center at Tsinghua University, this idea of city planning
dates back to the Kaogongji, written before 221 BC. This book explains how to plan a capital city.
The Beijing Central Axis shows traditional Chinese ideas of “zhong (中)” and “he (和)”. For example, the
royal palace was placed at the center, with other important buildings placed around it to create a sense of harmony.
“Beijing’s unique and great order is created by this central axis,” said Liang Sicheng (1901-1972), a
famous Chinese architect.
1.When was the Beijing Central Axis added to the UNESCO World Heritage List?
2.How long is the Beijing Central Axis?
3.Where does the idea of the capital city planning come from?
4.Why were other important buildings placed around the royal palace?
