When ice cream is frozen, it is almost impossible to
scoop it out from the tub. But now an inventor says he has
created a scoop to solve this problem. It is all to do with the
angle(角度)at which you scoop ice cream.
Midnight Scoop
Rather than using your wrist(手腕 ), Michael Chou, the
inventor, suggests pushing the scoop away from you and bringing the power of your arm
and chest muscles into play.
His Midnight Scoop has a curved end. It allows you to easily use that power . It is
the first change in design since the ice cream scoop was invented in 1897.
Chou calls his invention the Midnight Scoop because he spent many late nights
designing it. The final product took 38 redesigns to come to success.
“Every time I scooped ice cream, I couldn’t help but feel there was a better way. I
like my ice cream frozen and hard. Melting it with a hot spoon or letting it sit out for
half an hour ruins(把……弄糟)it,” he said.
As an aerospace engineer, Chou is familiar with mechanical forces(机械力). Thus,
he could design the scoop to rely on the power of one’s arm and chest.
But, at the same time, he is a 35-year-old father of two. This makes him familiar
with ice cream. “That drove me to create the Midnight Scoop, because I needed a fast
and efficient way to get ice cream to my son and daughter,” Chou explained.

Many people often spend hours watching videos on their phones before sleep, with the lights
off. However, do you know that using your phone in the dark is not a very good idea? The screen
of your phone sends out blue light, which is quite harmful to your eyes. It can also be hard for you
to go asleep.
What is blue light? Blue light is everywhere. It is sent out both by artificial (人造的) light and
by our biggest light— the sun! Blue light is the part of visible light which has the second shortest
wavelength. Light with shorter wavelengths have greater power. The strong energy of blue light
allows it to pass easily through the cornea (角膜) of our eyes. Therefore, blue light is quite
harmful to our eyes.
However, blue light isn’t all that bad. After all, it is a part of sunlight. In fact, it can help to
improve our sleep. The problem, however, lies in the bright screen lights we stare at each night.
In other words, the problem isn’t exactly the exposure (暴露) to blue light, but the timing of our
exposure to it.
Some scientists studied the difference between reading a paper book and an e-book before
bedtime. They found that it took longer for people who used an e-reader to fall asleep. These
people were also less smart in the following morning.
So, to protect the quality of your sleep, avoid screens an hour or two before your bedtime. If you
must use your phone before going to bed, keep a night lamp on.
61. doesn’t send out blue light.

62. Blue light is harmful to your eyes because .
A. the light is too weak B. it makes you hard to sleep
C. it has the longest waves D. it can go through your eye cornea easily
63. What does the third paragraph mean?
A. Blue light affects our lives.
B. Blue light can improve our sleep.
C. Don’t use your phone or watch TV at night.D. Don’t spend too much time on the bright screen.
64. What does the underlined word “stare” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. 阅读 B. 打开 C. 盯着 D. 开始
65. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Don’t use your e-reader any more.
B. Blue light is sure to affect our health.
C.You’d better use your phone before going to bed.
D. We should know about blue light and learn how to use it.
