Many schools make it a rule to check students' school bags. They do this for a variety of reasons,
many of which are linked to keeping pupils safe. Schools do not want anything dangerous or distracting
kids from their schooling to find their way inside. Recent years have seen many terrible accidents
happening in schools, making both teachers and parents worried about the problem.
Mrs. Nabors, a teacher at Jefferson Elementary, feels that all of her kids understand what materials
they are not permitted to bring to school. This explains why she seldom takes trouble to do a bag check in
her class. However, last Friday Mrs. Nabors and her students had just finished their morning work when
the teacher realized something seemed to be wrong, so she suddenly declared to the class that the bag
search was about to begin. On hearing the announcement, all her pupils quickly placed their bags on the
desk, waiting for checking.
Searching the school bags one by one, she didn't find anything that isn't permitted to bring to school.
What she saw were things usually seen in Elementary school pupils' school bags: text books, pencil boxes,
calculators(计算器),snacks and food for lunch. Nearly all the students accepted the check peacefully, and
some even offered to give the teacher a hand. There was one girl, though, who was watching everything in
anxiety. When it's her turn to be checked, eyes to eyes, Mrs. Nabors' immediately sensed that the second-
grader was carrying more than simply a forbidden game in her luggage.
When the teacher went to get the bag, she noticed something moving within. She'd seen a lot of
unusual things that kids had slipped in, but the wiggling(扭动)shape was new to her. She had never
discovered anything disturbing ... until then.注意:

I was sitting next to Missy in my ninth-grade world history class when Mrs. Bartlett announced a
new project. In groups, we were to create a newspaper around the culture we were studying.
On a piece of paper, we wrote the names of three friends we wanted in our group. After collecting all
the requests, Mrs. B. informed us that she would take into consideration the names we chose and would letus know the results the next day. I had no doubt I would get the group of my choice. Missy was one of my
friends. I knew we had chosen each other.
The next day, I anxiously expected the class. After the bell rang, Missy and I stopped talking as Mrs.
B called for our attention. She started to call out names. When she reached group three, Missy's name was
called. "So I'm in group three," I thought. The second, third and fourth members of the group were called.
My name was not included. There had to be some mistake!
Then I heard it. The last group: "Mauro, Juliette, Rachel, Karina." I could feel the tears well in my
eyes. How could I face being in that group—the boy who barely spoke English, the one girl who was
always covered by skirts that went down to her ankles, and the other girl who wore weird (怪异的)
clothes. Oh, how badly I wanted to be with my friends.
I fought back tears as I walked up to Mrs. B. She looked at me and knew what I was there for. I was
determined to convince her I should be in the "good" group. "Why?" I started.
She gently placed a hand on my shoulder. "I know what you want, Karina," she said, "but your group
needs you. I need you to help them get a passing grade on this task. Only you can help them."

Hudson had been looking forward to this trip for weeks. This was more than the usual excitement
about end-of-year trips And now, finally, after weeks of expectation, Hudson, Davion, Tasha, and their
friends Trey and Justin were at Six Flags Great America, which was home to more roller coasters and
games than any place north of Florida.
They were waiting in line for the Twisted Twister—the scariest roller coaster. In front of them, the
coaster rose threateningly out of the ground. From the very beginning, the Twisted Twister lived up to its
name. The black coaster tracks corkscrewed 5 almost immediately. Then, the riders in the yellow cars weregiven a moment to catch their breath as they were cranked (转动) slowly to the top of a hill. But the relief
didn't last long. As soon as the roller coaster cars were over the peak, the track twisted again. And again
and again and again.
Glancing at it, Hudson felt his stomach was too tight to say anything at all, The Twisted Twister was
the scariest roller coaster he had ever seen. But he wasn't about to mention his fear to his friends. Because
they would tell him that he was acting like a little kid, too scared to go on the park's best ride. He felt dorky
and awkward standing there. The sea of people between them and the Twisted Twister was steadily getting
smaller. Hudson smiled weakly as his friends cheered when they counted just three rope barriers to go.
Then two. Then one. And then they were at the stairs. Davion, Justin, and Trey were nearly jumping up
and down with excitement. But Hudson could only hear people screaming, and he couldn't even tell if the
screams were because of delight or terror. And he knew, suddenly, that he could not make it.

As a young boy, I was carefree. Every vacation I looked forward to two things—seeing my grandpa
and hearing his wonderful stories. My grandpa was a very good storyteller. He had worked various odd
jobs when he was young and wove his adventures and misadventures into fantastic tales. These wonderful
tales colored my childhood.
As I grew up, I had to admit that Grandpa's stories went on a little long, even a little boring and
gradually lost their magic. However, not wanting to upset him, my brother and I would sometimes take
turns sitting in the living room, listening to grandpa tell his stories.
When my grandpa was approaching 91, he suffered from serious memory-loss. It was kind of what
doctors called dementia (痴呆), probably the earliest stage of Alzheimer's disease. Following the doctor's
directions, we moved him into a Sunrise Assisted Living Community, where he could get a better care.
After that, grandpa hardly came to our house.
One weekend before my grandpa's birthday, I came to visit him. Seeing grandpa sitting in his
armchair, dull-looking, I was consumed with mixed feelings. I wheeled grandpa to the sunshine in thecourtyard, talking to him. He couldn't express himself clearly and spoke in short bursts, but I listened to
him patiently and carefully just as I used to be a little boy.
It was then that I noticed a shadow box with some old and yellowish photos in it. I picked one up, in
which my brother, several boys in our neighborhood, and I were playing basketball with grandpa cheering
us on twenty years before. My mind flashed back to those beautiful memories. Back then, Grandpa was in
good physical condition and we were all wearing basketball jerseys, playing and laughing with abandon. I
presented the photo to my grandpa, pointing at each member and reminding him of their names. Incredibly,
grandpa could speak out the name of every player. I even caught a soft light in grandpa's eyes and a smile
on his lips.

A few years ago, the company I worked for sent my wife and me to live in New York for a year. I've
always loved running, so I was really happy when I found out I lived next to Central Park. This meant that
every morning I could go for a run before I went to work.
Because a lot of people had told me to be careful of robbers in the park, so usually I didn't take
anything with me. How could they rob me if I didn't have anything? But one morning, my wife gave me a
$ 10 bill and asked me to buy some bread on the way.
It was a beautiful morning and the park was quiet with very few people walking or jogging (慢
跑)around. While I was running through the park, another jogger knocked into me. He apologized and
continued running. For a while, I didn't think too much of it. However, when I noticed the wide path where
I was running, I thought it was kind of strange. The warning of robbers in the park occurred to me. "It
could have been a robber!" I suddenly became alarmed, so I checked my pocket and found that the money
was missing. Without thinking twice, I ran after that jogger. I finally caught up and held him by the arm. I
shouted, "Give me the $ 10 bill! Now!" I am not usually a hot-headed(性急的) person, but I got really
angry this time. I couldn't believe the robbery was actually happening to me. Filled with anger, I shook myfist at him. This seemed to frighten him. He quickly put his hand in his pocket and gave me the money.
Then he ran away as fast as he could.
I bought the bread and went home. As soon as I got home, I couldn't wait to tell my wife my story.
"You won't believe what happened to me," I started with pride. She immediately stopped me, "I know, you
left the money for the bread on the kitchen table."

Shoveling(铲) the snow had always been the best part about winter. Not that I thought it was fun, but
my dad's reaction to a clean driveway kept me going. He hated shoveling snow more than anything. So, I
took it upon myself at eight years old to do it for him. Every time I saw snow fall from the sky, I knew the
universe was ready to put me to work.
I would run and put on my jacket, snow boots to prepare myself for the work ahead. But every single
time, before I went outside, I would stop by my older sister's room to see if she wanted to help me. I knew
she would say no, but I always asked anyway.
One day there was a lot of snow, and there was no way I would be able to clean it all up myself. It
was getting dark, and I hated the thought of my dad having to shovel the snow after a long day of work. So
I did the routine and knocked on my sister's door. As I expected, she gave me the same old "no". Annoyed,
I asked again. Without saying anything further, she got up, pushed me out of the room and slammed(砰地
关上) the door in my face.
I stood there silently for a second. Then, I turned around, went out of the house, and set out in the
cold to tackle the enemy that lay in my driveway. But I couldn't calm down. I was really angry that she
would leave me to battle this alone. All I wanted was some help. The more I remembered every "no" she
had ever said to me, the angrier I became.
I fought tirelessly, my short arms swinging from side to side while the wind cut against my cheeks.
After one long hour, I was not even halfway done. Looking at the victorious snow, I thought of Dad's
disappointment.注意:

_____________________________________________________________________________________答案以及解析
1. 答案:
When Mrs. Nabors unzipped the bag, she found two puppy eyes staring back at her. The poor teacher
took two steps back, and then calmed herself down. She did not yell at her little pupil for bringing a puppy
to school. Instead, she asked a brave boy to take the puppy out of the bag and keep it in an empty box, and
she put the box in a corner. The s mall girl stood there watching all this silently.
To know why the girl took the dog to school, Mrs. Nabors took her to her office. The dog belonged to
her friend, the girl explained, and she took care of it because her friend had to be away from home for
several days. Because she didn't want to leave the pet alone at home, she put it in her school bag and came
to school with it. The girl said she was sorry for it and promised never to do such a thing. Surprisingly,
Mrs. Nabors praised her for her love for small animals but warned her not to be hurt by it.
2. 答案:
I was amazed after hearing what she said. She had seen something in me I hadn't seen. "Will you
help them?" she asked. I stood straighter. "Yes," I replied. I couldn't believe it came out of my mouth, but
it did. I bravely walked to my group and sat down. Different newspaper columns were assigned according
to interests. We did research. Halfway through the week, I felt myself enjoying the company of these three
partners. I grew sincerely interested in learning something about them.
Finally the result of assignment came out. To our surprise, we got the first prize. After that semester
ended, I always received a friendly hello from my group. And I was always happy to see them. I don't
recall what the newspaper's headline was or even the culture we wrote about, but I did learn something that
week. I was given a chance to see other people in a new light. They weren't misfits, just people that no one
cared enough about to try to understand except Mrs. Bartlett. She gave us an A on that assignment. We
should have handed it right back, for she was the one who truly deserved it.
3. 答案:
Without a word, Hudson turned, pushed past the crowd and ran out of the line. Their faces blurred in
front of him. He'd made it down the stairs before he stopped to take a breath. Now that his fear and panic
had started to fade, embarrassment was creeping in. "Hey!" Somehow, Tasha was standing in front of him,
"It's okay if you are afraid. I get so scared before shows that I can't eat for about two hours before going on
stage." Shocked to hear those words, Hudson stood still without any words. It suddenly hit him that what
mattered most was to have fun with his friends.
Just then, he saw his other friends coming, big smiles on their faces. "Are you ready to try with us?"
Davion said. Seeing their grins and encouraging eyes, Hudson nodded his head. The moment they got to
the stairs, his stomach started to clench again, but he tried to take each step forward. Finally, he got in the
car. WHOOSH! Almost without warning, the ride started. It felt like he'd left his heart on the loading
platform. He was flying and he heard himself scream as delight spilled out of him. Later when they gotout, they took a picture by the ride's sign. It served as a reminder of what was more important to him than
fear.
4. 答案:
A bright idea for grandpa's birthday came to my mind. "Why not give grandpa a surprise?" I said to
myself. I immediately got down to carrying out my plan. Luckily, I contacted all the players in the photo.
To my great delight, they were greatly touched by the plan and all agreed to join in. To make the scene
real, I even managed to find all the basketball jerseys, equipment and arrange for a similar-looking
basketball court. The big day finally came. After wheeling my grandpa to the court, we began the special
game. While playing, I kept an eye on grandpa, waiting for something deep down.
Seeing "the same players" playing there, grandpa seemed to have thought of something. Glancing at
grandpa again, I found him cheering us on just like 20 years before. Sitting in the warm sunlight, he
cheered and clapped, with a bigger smile. For a while, my mind seemed to flash back to those beautiful
days. Indeed, my plan somewhat worked. I was overjoyed that I could do something to delight Grandpa, an
important person in my life. I was not sure whether this birthday would stick in his mind, but one thing
was certain: it'd definitely stick in mine.
5. 答案:
Looking at the money on the table, I stood there, shocked. For the rest of the day, I felt extremely
guilty, with the innocent jogger and his "helplessness" on my mind. "How could I be so rude to him
without knowing the truth? Why was it that the jogger gave me the money? I still remember his frightened
face when I scared him away like a monster. I decided to find a chance to apologize to him. The next
morning, I got up and went to the park as usual, but not for jogging. I just hung around where I met that
jogger, but in vain.
For several days, I waited at the same spot. But to my disappointment, he didn't turn up. It was
almost a week later before I finally spotted him again. I, the "robber", gave the $10 bill back to him and
said sorry to him again and again. Fortunately, he forgave me for what I had done to him and said, "Oh, it
doesn't matter." Many years have passed, but I can still feel my cheeks burning with shame. From the
experience 1 have learned that it is too early to judge a person before you know the truth.
6. 答案:
Feeling bitter and desperate, I couldn't stop my tears. My inner anger was like a growing monster,
uncontrollably driving me to the edge of madness. Before I realized it, I was sobbing in my sister's room,
with bullets of words firing through my mouth, expressing my long-buried dissatisfaction towards her
absence from my snow shoveling experiences. The house seemed to be holding its breath when I stopped
my accusation, still weeping. "Please don't cry. Every teardrop of yours is a reminder of how selfish I was.
I'm sorry. Would you give me another chance to go 13 / 15 shoveling with you?", said my sister with
gentleness and sincerity in her voice.
My sister and I went outside. More than half of the driveway was still blanketed in white but I wasn't
alone in this battle any more. Every shovel of snow was a witness to the energy and excitement in me. By
the time we finished, my back was aching, muscles sore, and body exhausted. However, deep inside mewas a brother, who was so overcome with happiness that he felt on top of the world. That was the beauty
of companionship. And from the bright smile blooming on my sister's face, I could tell that she felt the
same. Arm in arm, we walked inside as darkness fell, waiting for father to come home.
