What will you do when one of the few bookstores in your neighborhood shuts down? If you’
re Latanya DeVaughn, you will make a new and improved one! As a mom and writer, she had
always dreamed of opening her own bookstore, so after watching another close its doors for good,
she saw her chance.
While Latanya said every neighborhood deserved a bookstore, actually making it happen
simply wasn’t possible. What she came up with instead was to turn a bus into a bookmobile! With
the help of her community, she raised money for her dream and, at the end of 2021, it came true!
Bronx Bound Books rolled out in style as a bus with orange cube bookshelves. “People love the
way it smells,” Latanya added. “One woman said the wood smell makes her feel like she’s at
home.”
Although the bookstore on wheels carries around 30,000 new and used books, it has more
room than you might expect! Latanya also makes sure to prepare books with a variety of
characters, so all readers can see themselves in the pages. Of course, her collection also features
works of noted Black authors like James Baldwin and Alice Walker. “It’s meant to be that way,”
she explained, “because I remember going to bookstores and having to look through books just to
find someone I felt I could identify with.”
Setting up her bookstore in a new spot each day, Latanya is doing her part to make sure that
everyone in the neighborhood has books to read. That’s what Bronx Bound Books is for. “I can’t
open up a bookstore on every corner, but I can probably pop up on tons of different corners,” she
said.试卷第 1 页,共 28

While a healthy diet has always been considered necessary for overall wellness, historically,
many hospitals have overlooked its powerful potential for healing. In some areas, that’s beginning
to change. In Pennsylvania four years ago, St. Luke’s Hospital partnered with Rodale Institute to
start an organic produce farm at the hospital’s campus in Easton. Since its first season, the St.
Luke’s farm has expanded to grow 100 fruits and vegetables on 11-12 acres.
Today, St. Luke’s sends all new mothers’ home with a basket of organic produce. New moms
aren’t the only ones benefiting from the farm’s bounty, which is also served to patients, cooked up
in cafeterias operated by the hospital’s six-campus network, and sold at nearby farmers markets.
Hospital farms are part of a broader movement to make organic, locally produced food
accessible to the general population. Some hospitals are making it a paramount principle to source
food from nearby farms, while others are turning unused land on their grounds into community
gardens. By making organic produce easily accessible to the patients and visitors alike, these试卷第 20 页,共 28 页hospitals hope to inspire lifelong changes for better health. Even though most hospital farms aren’t
growing enough to completely supply their staff and patient food needs, providing even a small
amount of fresh produce makes an educational statement about how healthy (and delicious) a
plant-rich diet can be.
While the farm-to-hospital movement continues to develop, it’s encountering some
challenges along the way. For one, health workers don’t necessarily know how to grow food. This
means that most hospitals need to hire a full-time farmer and other farm labor to manage the
property, which can be expensive. It takes between 3 and 5 years for most hospital farms to break
even, and much less save money on food costs. Nonetheless, participating hospitals believe that
the benefits are worthwhile. In the near future, perhaps, you might soon experience a farm-fresh
meal at a hospital near you.
28.What are the hospital farms aimed at?
A.Teaching patients how to grow food.
B.Upgrading the hospital to attract more patients.
C.Making full use of unused land nearby.
D.Offering healthy food to the public.
29.Why are “new mothers” mentioned in paragraph 2?
A.To show the benefit of the hospital farms.
B.To present the popularity of hospital farms.
C.To stress the importance of a healthy diet.
D.To prove the effect of organic food on them.
30.What does the underlined word “paramount” mean in paragraph 3?
A.Sufficient. B.Chief. C.Broad. D.Simple.
31.What is the challenge of the movement?
A.The rising financial burden. B.The inefficient management.
C.The public’s less-open attitude. D.The lack of proper workforce.

The Amazon rainforest is moving toward a “tipping point” past which trees will start to die试卷第 1 页,共 28
页
学科网(北京)股份有限公司off in large numbers, researchers have said.
The study published in the Journal of Natural Climate Change was conducted by scholars
from the University of Exeter, the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) and the
Technical University of Munich .They used satellited data from 1991 to 2016 to examine trends in
deforestation.
They calculated that 75 percent of the rainforest is now at risk of being unable to recover
when experiencing droughts, which are also increasingly more common due to global warming .
“Deforestation and climate change are likely to be the main drivers of this decline ,” Niklas
Boers of PIK and the Technical University of Munich told the BBC. The study has predicted that
it is only a matter of decades until a “significant chunk” of the Amazon is transformed from
rainforest into savannah (大草原).
What would the world be like without the Amazon rainforest ? The destruction of the
Amazon rainforest, in some ways caused by global warming, will also speed up this process. “The
Amazon stores lots of carbon and all of that would be released into the atmosphere, which would
then further contribute to increasing temperatures and have future effects on global mean
temperatures, ”Professor Boulton of the University of Exeter told the BBC.
This worrying snowball effect means that the destruction of the Amazon will make the much
larger battle against global warming more difficult. The destruction of the Amazon would also
have a huge impact on the ecology of the Earth. The Amazon rainforest is home to more than
30,000 species of plants,2.5 million species of insects, 2,500 fish, more than 1,500 bird
species,550 reptiles (爬 行 动 物 ), and 500 mammals , according to the Wildlife Conservation
Society. A savannah, a grassland environment that lacks a large variety of plant life would be
unable to host the large and varied ecosystems that currently exist in the rainforest. It is likely that
a variety of species tend to be endangered or even go missing, as they would be unable to adjust to
this new ecosystem.
32.In what way does the writer make the conclusion about the study in the first paragraph?
A.By using numbers. B.By analyzing data.
C.By making experiments. D.By imagining the future.
33.What usually happens as a result of global warming according to the text ?试卷第 20 页,共 28 页A.Lacking water. B.Flooding houses.
C.Causing fires. D.Planting trees.
34.According to the text, the future of the rainforest would be that________.
A.it will last long until the forest recovery
B.it won’t be long before the rainforests become grasslands
C.the destruction has a huge impact on people’s life
D.the Amazon stores lots of oxygen and will be released into the air
35.What is implied in the last paragraph ?
A.The battle against global warming is not so difficult.
B.No life can adjust to the new ecosystem.
C.A grassland environment is better to host the large and varied ecosystems that currently
exist in the rainforest.
D.A large number of species will probably be extinct.

We’re lucky to live in an age when the sum total of human knowledge is pretty available at
the click of a button. We’ ve never had access to so much information. 36 . So here are a
few strategies to sharpen your critical thinking.
Watch out for confirmation prejudice. 37 . In repeated experiments, psychologists
have shown we’re much more likely to accept something as evidence if it confirms what we
already think we know. And we’re much more likely to ignore information if it is not in line with
our views, which will affect our ability to process information.
Acknowledge small differences. In life, most situations are varying and complicated.
Admitting that can enrich the way that we view the world. For example, what colour is the sky?
Well, the obvious answer is blue. But at sunrise or sunset, it can be red. On a cold misty morning,
white or gray. 38 .
Practise intellectual humility (谦逊). One approach to, well, arguing, is to let go of the idea
of being “right”. Or at least seriously consider that you might actually be wrong. 39 .试卷第 1 页,共 28
页
学科网(北京)股份有限公司Really try to understand where the other person is coming from. Arguing is just to waste
somebody’s time.
40 . It’s more important than ever to know where your information is coming from.
That science-looking paragraphs might look very convincing until you dig a little deeper and find
it was just posted by someone having no qualifications. That is the case we should not overlook.
Engaging in critical thinking isn’t as fun as picking up a pitchfork, or feeling like you’re
fundamentally right. But in the long run, it leads to a more curious, educated and harmonious
society, which is the biggest win of all.
A.Avoid mistakes
B.Check your sources
C.We all enjoy feeling like we’re right
D.But not all of what’s out there is quite what it seems
E.So pay attention to differences in many situations
F.So don’t rush to decide, and be actively prepared to change your mind
G.Putting yourself into the other person’s shoes can have more fruitful outcomes

Every culture on the planet has certain topics that people avoid discussing. But the taboos (禁

people from other cultures say what you can't talk about.
Paying attention to what people don't 42 can teach us something important about
their culture. Their taboo topics give us clues about what they value, respect or even fear. Topics
that are considered too personal or too controversial (有争议的) may also be avoided.
America is full of taboo topics. Usually, during a polite conversation, Americans will 43

What do these taboos tell us about American 47 ? For one, they show that Americans
place importance on 48 . America certainly isn't the only place that values it. You will find
49 taboos about asking personal questions in many European countries. "This is especially
true in Germany," says Hanna Graf, a German living in Shanghai. "In Germany, you are not
supposed to ask about other people's personal business," she says. "But there are no 50
rules about what you can't ask; it's just in people's minds."
In Brazil, 51 , almost anything seems open to discussion. "Brazilians talk about all
kinds of personal issues," says Mark Quinlan, who grew up in Brazil. But of course, even Brazil
has its own taboos. In Brazil, soccer is the one topic that can turn friends into enemies. Brazilians
love the sport. Saying anything 52 about soccer can cause big trouble. Even expressing
preference for one team over another can be 53 .
Like Brazilians, Australians talk freely about almost anything. However, they do not talk
about their personal or business 54 . They prefer to let people judge them by their actions,
not their words. Boasting your achievements will only make you the 55 of other people's
jokes.
And what about your taboos? The next time you have a conversation, pay attention to what
isn't said. You might be amazed at what you learn about your own culture.

The Chinese writing system is one of the main reasons why Chinese civilization has survived
into modern times.
At the beginning, written Chinese was a picture-based language. It 56 (date) back
to several thousand years ago when symbols were carved on animal bones and 57

58 people were divided geographically, leading 59 many varieties of dialects and
characters. 60 , this changed under Emperor Qinshihuang. During the Qin Dynasty, the
Chinese writing system began to develop in one direction, and it was extremely important in

67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Seven of my sisters and brothers had flown out of the family, but my brother Wayne was
the only one with kids. He and his wife had just been transferred across the country to California.
Mom was looking at her first Christmas without little ones in the house. She was a little depressed.
On Christmas Eve we sat talking about my little nieces, wondering what they were doing.
We imagined how empty the next day would be without them opening presents. When we couldn’t
stand it any longer, we called and passed the phone around, asking them if they had been good
girls and what they hoped Santa would leave under their tree. Mom then busied herself in the
kitchen.
That was when something terrible happened. We lived on a busy state highway in south
Louisiana, on a section of a dangerous road. The sound of screaming tires (轮胎) wasn’t unusual
to us. Many strangers asked us for help and stayed in our living room while waiting for an
ambulance, a tow
truck (拖车) or a family member to rescue them.试卷第 1 页,共 28

学科网(北京)股份有限公司As we hung up from talking to our nieces, we heard the familiar sound of tires screaming.
We held our breath, and then heard a loud crash. We rushed out to the road. A truck had hit a car
holding a young couple and their two little daughters. The truck driver and the young family
climbed out of the terribly damaged vehicles. Amazingly, no one appeared hurt.
Mom and Dad welcomed them into the house and Mom started warming dinner. Later,
someone picked up the truck driver. But the family was stranded (滞留). They were on their way
to Mississippi to spend Christmas with elderly grandparents who were too old to drive and pick
them up this late night. Within five seconds we all fell in love with the precious girls. The older
girl was three just like my older niece, and the baby was a few months younger than our little one.
