Gratitude is powerful. I know this isn’t the first time you’ve been encouraged to explore the word with a
promise that gratitude will enhance your life, but when we hear something often, it can seem antique. In a world
where we’ re constantly looking for what’s next, gratitude practices seem old-fashioned. But, we know practicing
gratitude can have benefits.
One of my favourite ways to show gratitude is to remember my life motto: Always try to help others as much
as you can. In my experience, this means you have to believe that everyone can achieve their dreams and that if you
help a colleague succeed, you succeed too. This means that success isn’t about stepping on others to get to the top;
it’s about working together as a community. It also means that we can be grateful for what we have, without feeling
jealous.
Recently, I’ve been inspired by a scholar, Sanai Graden, who went viral for listening to someone in need.
She ended up raising money to help the homeless man. “I just treat people how I want to be treated,” Graden says.
“I made my decision based on the fact that it would not only affect me, but also the people around me.”
That’s a key part of gratitude, and something Graden says she centers in her career. “I don’t want to be the
type of person who just gets by. I want to be the person who is making contributions and helping others through the
way. I’m not only going to win, but I’m taking people with me to win as well.”
Before I started regularly practising gratitude, I thought it meant being happy with what I have and not
试卷第4页,共13页complaining. This is mostly true. But now I think that being grateful also includes how we approach every part of
our lives, and how we use it to help us grow.
24.Which statement will the author probably agree with?
A.Gratitude practices are old-fashioned.
B.Opponents can prevent us from succeeding.
C.Supporting others is a way of expressing gratitude.
D.Success means helping others realize their dreams.
25.Why is Sanai Graden mentioned in the text?
A.To illustrate why people help the homeless.
B.To make a comparison with other people’s ideas.
C.To explain how to become a celebrity overnight.
D.To be used as an example of practicing gratitude.
26.What does Sanai Graden focus on in her career?
A.Staying alive. B.Being a helper. C.Being a leader. D.Getting the win.
27.What might be the most suitable title for the text?
A.Getting to the Top to Get Success. B.Gratitude: Being Content with Life.
C.The Power of Gratitude in Action. D.Success: Affecting Others Around You.

These days, we’re all well aware of the plastic problem the world’s facing. We’re reminded of this issue all
the time, whether that’s by being encouraged to recycle, or by having to pay for disposable carrier bags.
Although we all realize what a serious issue plastic pollution is, it’s different when you actually see the
overwhelming results of it for yourself. This was the situation a team of researchers who recently published a study
on the so-called Great Pacific Garbage Patch (垃圾带) in the journal Scientific Reports found themselves in.
According to the study, the patch, which is located off the coast of California, US, is made up of 79,000 tons of
plastic waste and covers 1.6 million square kilometers. It’s over four times the size of Japan, or almost 100 times
the size of Beijing.
“I’ve been doing this research for a while, but it was depressing to see [the patch in person],” Laurent
Lebreton, lead author of the study, told the Guardian. “There were things you just wondered how they made it into
the ocean. There’s clearly an increasing influx of plastic into the garbage patch.”
It’s believed that 8 million tons of plastic ends up in the sea each year, and a lot of it ends up collecting near
largo ocean currents around the world, forming “islands” of plastic. This causes problems not only for son creaturesbut also for humans. The swirling ocean currents eventually break down some of the plastic, with a lot of it ending
up in the digestive systems of fish and birds.
As a result, it’s believed that plastic has worked its way up the food chain directly onto our plates — not to
mention the countless creatures that choke on plastic waste, or are poisoned by the chemicals in it.
So what can we do about this?
Lebreton is a member of the Ocean Cleanup Foundation, a group that’s developed technology to collect
plastic waste from the ocean. This is a huge project, with the group claiming it will take around five years just to
clean up half of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch alone. But rather than discourage people from using plastic
altogether, Lebreton believes that we should simply be more mindful of how we use it. “In my opinion, plastic is
very useful. But I think we must divert (转移) the way we use plastic, particularly in terms of single-use plastic and
those objects that have a very short service lifespan,” he told BBC News.
28.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.The Great Pacific Garbage Patch. B.A study on plastic pollution.
C.Lebreton and his research. D.Cleaning ocean of plastic.
29.According to the text, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch ________.
A.is about four times the size of Beijing.
B.is harmful to both sea creatures and humans.
C.consists of about 1.6 million tons of plastic waste.
D.was formed because of swirling ocean currents.
30.What can we learn from the passage?
A.People should be more careful with their use of plastic products.
B.Single-use plastic should be banned for the sake of the environment.
C.The Great Pacific Garbage Patch will be cleaned up in about five years.
D.Plastic products with short service lifespans should be replaced.
31.What is the text probably from?
A.A business report B.A textbook C.A magazine D.Science fiction

Tiny black-capped chickadees (黑顶山雀) have good memories. They store food in many different locations
in the wild, and then return to these places when other food sources are low. Some researchers thought that neurons
called “place cells” would explain these birds’ ability to remember their hidden food. These cells encode
试卷第6页,共13页information about where things are. But recently, a team of researchers found that each time a black-capped
chickadee hides a seed in a specific location, a unique brain pattern appears in the hippocampus (海马体) —
separate from place cells. Selmaan Chettih, a neuroscientist from Columbia University, compared it to a barcode
(条形码).
“The hippocampus was like a flipped switch. This new pattern of activity was different from the place cells,”
Chettih says. To observe this, Chettih built a special area with feeders full of sunflower seeds in the corners. He put
wooden perches (栖息处) all over the place with small flaps where birds could hide seeds. The scientists put tiny
probes into the chickadees’ brains and tracked activity in their memory areas. Each time a bird hid a seed under a
flap, a special brain pattern appeared, like a barcode. Each bird had its own unique brain pattern for each time it hid
a seed.
When the birds revisited these sites and recovered the hidden seeds, the same barcode-like pattern
materialized again, as though all the information about each location and seed was linked to a unique brain pattern.
The researchers compared these memories to humans’ memories of specific events or personal experiences.
They are essential to how humans define themselves and bind together moments in time, people, places and sensory
information. But the mechanism for how this binding happens is still unclear.
Chettih says it’s difficult to know exactly when an animal is forming a memory. However, the fact that this
seed-hiding behavior follows a clear pattern may help scientists to understand how the brain makes and stores
memories.
32.What can we know about the chickadees from paragraph 1?
A.They are able to find their hidden food. B.They are good at remembering barcodes.
C.They have better memories than humans.D.They lack the hippocampi in their brains.
33.Which aspect of the research does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A.Its function. B.Its application. C.Its theory. D.Its process.
34.What does the underlined word “materialized” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Changed. B.Appeared. C.Decreased. D.Failed.
35.What does the author express in the last paragraph?
A.The secret of chickadees’ memories.
B.The difficulty in doing the research.
C.The need to further research birds’ memories.
D.The meaning of studying the seed-hiding behavior.第二节(共5小题:每小题2. 5分, 满分12. 5分)

One of the most common mistakes in communication is trying to do too much. 36 There’s no
value in delivering any kind of communication, whether written, spoken, formal, or informal, if the message
doesn’t come across clearly. Being clear and brief — while maintaining interest and including everything your
listeners need to know — is a high-level communication skill.
Here are some tips worth following in order to communicate more effectively.
●Keep your audience in mind.
Your audience will naturally be more interested and engaged when you tailor your communications to their
interests. 37 This will engage their desire to understand and interact with the information.
●Don’t use ten words when one will do.
Even the most engaged and committed audience will eventually get bored. Keeping your message simple
and clear will make it easier for people to understand. 38 However, they’re hearing it for the first time.
Keep it simple.
● 39
If you’ve ever worked as an instructor, manager, trainer or coach, you’ll know that there are few better ways
to learn new information than to teach it. Ask the audience to contribute their ideas or to take a role in explaining
new concepts and policies to others. Allow them to lead discussions and meetings to develop their communication
skills.
●Consider the best method to deliver your message.
If the information you’re communicating isn’t urgent, consider sending an email. Written communication
will give your audience more time to review it, think it over, and follow up with questions. 40
Building effective communication skills takes time, but the effects are worth the effort.
A.Be patient.
B.Get the audience involved.
C.The best messages are often simple.
D.Speak directly to what matters to them.
E.You may be surprised by what your listeners offer.
F.It will also give them a handy record to refer back to.
G.As the speaker, you already know what you’re going to say.

After a meeting one night, I felt very tired. I wanted to go home and get to sleep. I was moving toward my
car when I heard mew, mew, mew, mew. Looking under my car, I found a little cat trembling and crying.
When I held her in my arms, she seemed that little and sweet. I took her into my car with me. Arriving home
very late, I put her in the front yard and left some milk for her, half hoping she would run away by the time
morning came. However, in the morning she was still there. I tried to find someone who would take the cat, but all
the cat lovers were full up. I still didn’t know what to do with the cat, so I took her to my parents’ house after work.
Not long before, my father had been diagnosed with cancer. Though he had been treated and the doctors felt
they had pushed down the cancer, I liked to go there as often as I could.
That afternoon, parking my car in front of my parents’ house, I was trying to coax (哄)the cat out from under
the seat when she raced out of the car and into the neighbors’ bushes. There were a lot of bushes in thatneighborhood, and I realized after searching for a while that it was a lost cause to find her in a short time. I felt a bit
sad but comforted myself that this area had many families with kids. Surely someone would find her and give her a
good home, I told myself.
As I was leaving, I told my parents to call me if the cat came around their place and I would come to pick her
up. I said to my father, “Of course, you can keep her if you want.” He replied, “Not on your life!” I supposed that
Dad wasn’t that interested in having pets, particularly cats.
