AA Volunteer Program in Ubud, Bali
Start dates: tasks start every Monday
Period: choose from 2-12 weeks
Volunteer hours: 4-5 hours per day
Age: volunteers aged 16+ and families
How you can make an influence:
Bali has been growing rapidly for some time and its infrastructure (基础设施) has struggled to keep up with
population growth. There is a strong need for new community buildings, but getting them completed can take a
long time. By volunteering to lend a hand with building and repairs, you can help speed up tasks that will serve the
local community. Moreover, you’ll develop personally and professionally by improving your communication skills
and exploring Ubud’s rich culture and natural environment.
Volunteer work can include laying bricks (砖), building with wood, painting, gardening and so on. The tasks
often require moving, climbing, or standing for long hours, so strength and a positive attitude are valuable. The
volunteers will be teamed up with local workers. They should be willing to get their hands dirty and provide
support wherever help is most needed.
Volunteer requirements:
All volunteers joining for 2 or more weeks must get a C6B Visa. An exception (例外) to the above applies if a
volunteer will be in Bali for less than 30 days. This exception requires taking part in the Culture Week, Adventure
Week, or Yoga and Meditation Week, along with one, two, or three weeks of volunteering. In this situation, the
volunteer can join with a tourist visa upon arrival.
To respect the local culture and customs in Bali, volunteers should be aware that they shouldn’t have anything
covering their face while at their volunteer placement.
All volunteers should be able to communicate in English and have proper volunteer travel insurance (保险).
1. What are volunteers expected to do in Bali?
A. Aid in some community projects. B. Support community health efforts.
C. Educate the locals on green tourism. D. Organize community social services.
2. Who could be most suitable for the volunteer program?
A. Those skilled in design work. B. Those experienced in management.

3. Which is a must for joining the volunteer work in Bali?
A. Speaking English. B. Wearing a face mask.
C. Getting a tourist visa. D. Attending cultural events.B
To improve their city, some students from the Kansas City Art Institute take on a special art project. They have
spent the past several months designing and painting colorful murals (壁画) in the alleys (小巷) between homes in
the historic Northeast neighborhood. “By creating artworks, we aim to turn these old, forgotten alleyways into bright,
welcoming spaces,” said Héctor Casanova, the painting professor leading the project.
These students are not working alone. They are teaming up with Linda Fleischman, a former leader in the
local neighborhood. “Before the students start, they ask local people for ideas about what the murals should show.
We want everyone to feel like this is their art, too. It’s important that they have a voice in what goes on the walls,”
said Fleischman.
“We painted wings on one side of the alley, which make you feel you’re flying. On the other side, other students
painted vegetables and chickens, which reflect local life. Not only is it beautiful, but it is a little place for people to
take photos,” Eku Uresti, one of the art students joining the project, said.
“These buildings used to be covered in messy graffiti (涂鸦). But after the murals were added, graffiti almost
completely stopped. People who live here walk more to check the murals out and they are meeting each other and
talking more. You can feel that the area has become more lively. It’s helping the neighborhood grow stronger,” said
Casanova.
“We all have different styles. It’s no easy job to work as a team,” Carly, one of the art students, said. “But we’re
learning how to work together. Sometimes I ask myself, ‘Why am I doing this?’ But when I see the joy it brings to
people, I find all my efforts worthwhile. Now we’re turning the alleys into places where people can meet and
relax.”
4. What is the primary purpose of the mural project?
A. To attract new visitors. B. To practice painting skills.
C. To beautify the neighborhood. D. To protect some ancient walls.
5. How do the local people support the project?
A. By suggesting the painting themes. B. By attending mural-opening events.
C. By helping students clean the walls. D. By organizing painting competitions.
6. What change have the murals brought?
A. Encouraging daily artistic practices. B. Connecting community people.
C. Marketing modern buildings. D. Making local artists popular.
7. What does Carly think of the art project?
A. Easy and relaxing. B. Tiring and confusing.
C. Boring but educational. D. Challenging but meaningful.C
Psychological ownership (心理所有权) refers to the feeling or belief that something belongs to (属于)
oneself. While the idea has been used to study team member behavior in organizational settings, Suzanne Shu, an
expert at Cornell University, was among the first researchers to apply it to the field of marketing. She and her co-
authors wondered whether psychological ownership would apply to spaces that customers don’t own. By doing two
experiments in hotel rooms, they would like to see how hotel guests develop and react (回应) to psychological
ownership towards their short-term (短期的) stays.
The first experiment they designed was carried out at the campus hotel at the University of Wisconsin-
Madison, where they asked guests to choose their hotel room from a map. They can freely pick both their preferred
floor level and inside design. “The process didn’t make their check-in process smoother, shorter or more
convenient. However, they are more inclined to come back to the hotel and recommend this hotel to other people
around them,” said Rin Yoon, a co-author.
In another experiment, the study examined a set of 14,689 reviews (评论) of a hotel in Hawaii on the travel
platform TripAdvisor. The study found that guests who wrote reviews with the words “my” or “our” when
describing their experience reported higher satisfaction levels on the app. “People aren’t going to use ‘my room’ or
‘our room’ unless they felt a sense of ownership of the place during their stay. This sense possibly shaped their
overall experience,” said Shu.
Shu made some changes during a recent hotel stay during a business trip. “One of the first things I did to get
myself set up to work was move the table a little bit closer to the window and keep the door open. So I could get
more sunlight from the outside,” she said. “If you give a guest the freedom to change their environment a little bit
more, such as moving the things around and choosing their favorite bedding pieces, they’ll end up feeling it’s like
they’re at home. Even if guests have to spend time in this process, this effort can help hotels build customer loyalty
(忠诚).”
8. What do the team’s experiments focus on about psychological ownership?
A. Its effect on hotel guests. B. Its popularity in marketing plans.
C. Its role in team member behavior. D. Its connection to check-in service.
9. What does the underlined word “inclined” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Afraid. B. Careful. C. Surprised. D. Likely.
10. What does the use of “my” or “our” in reviews show about customers?
A. They look for wider acceptance.
B. They find enjoyment in leaving reviews.
C. They value personal control over a space.D. They care much about family experiences.
11. Which is Shu’s suggestion for hotels?
A. Setting up smart room control systems.
B. Offering home-like design to customers.
C. Asking about one’s personal travel purpose.
D. Allowing guests to personalize their rooms.

Scientists have recorded plant species for centuries to help us understand and protect them. But according to
new research, many have never actually been photographed (拍照) in their natural environment, and that’s a
problem.
An Australian team surveyed 33 important online collections of plant photographs to check the photographic
record of Australian plant species. The findings showed that out of 21,077 native Australian plant species, almost 20
percent of them remain without photographs that can prove their identity (身份) details. Thomas Mesaglio, the lead
author of the study, said, “It is surprising to see how many plant species have just line drawings, paintings, or even
no media at all.”
Being unable to use detailed photos can have real effects. Many plant species that are difficult to tell apart in the
wild may die out if scientists can’t properly recognize them with the help of photos. “We thought every plant species
had simply been photographed by someone, somewhere, throughout history. But it turns out this isn’t the case,” said
Will Cornwell, another author of the study.
Photographs can help with scientists’ work by keeping characteristics (特征) like flower color that can get lost
,
over time. They can also show additional features. But just as some animals catch less interest than others some
plants are facing the same situation. The most well-photographed plant groups are usually some trees that can be
noticed more easily. They usually have special characteristics, such as colorful flowers.
Because digital photography is so convenient now, anyone can help make a meaningful difference to science by
using the camera in their pocket. By using online tools like iNaturalist, the public can have their pictures identified
(识别) by experts and share the information, which will be used in research and protection.
“We’ve recognized nearly 10 percent of those previously unphotographed species thanks to members of the
,
public sharing their photographs online and experts who’ve kindly identified them ” said Mr. Mesaglio. “There could
be many more in personal collections just waiting to be shared. People can get much more excited about plants with
photographs.”
12. What did the survey find out regarding Australian plant species?
A. A rich source for artistic creation. B. A shortage of supporting photos.C. A focus on online viewing. D. A sudden fall in numbers.
13. What is stressed (强调) about plant photography in paragraph 3?
A. It is challenging in faraway areas. B. It is mainly done by professionals.
C. It often goes unnoticed by scientists. D. It influences the survival of plant species.
14. What does the author want to show by mentioning some animals in paragraph 4?
A. Colorful wildlife is far more valuable.
B. Some plants are as eye-catching as animals.
C. Plants with common features get little attention.
D. Animal photography receives wider recognition.
15. Which of the following is encouraged by the author?
A. Using digital tools to support plant protection.
B. Taking part in fieldwork to discover new species.
C. Protecting unique plants from being photographed.
D. Sharing valuable plant pictures with local museums.

Takehito was daydreaming when he heard a voice. “And what performance will you present at the talent show,
Takehito?” Takehito’s fifth-grade teacher, Mrs. Klein, had spoken and was glaring down at him now.
Takehito had been staring out the window from his desk while Mrs. Klein paced up and down the rows of
desks to ask each student what talent he or she would perform for the show. The rest of the class and Takehito’s
teacher were now staring and waiting for his answer.
Takehito’s face popped beet-red. He didn’t know what to say. Luckily for him, the bell rang, signaling the end
of the school day. Takehito quickly gathered his books and got up to leave, but Mrs. Klein stopped him.
Actually, Mrs. Klein worried about Takehito. Last year, he and his mother immigrated from Japan to Chicago.
He had not made friends easily. Some of the students in his old class made fun of the way he looked and the way he
spoke. Therefore, as his teacher this year, Mrs. Klein was determined to get Takehito to perform in the talent show,
knowing that if he did, he would establish some friendships before entering junior high.
“What are you good at?” asked Mrs. Klein.
,
Takehito thought for a moment. “I don’t know.”
“What do you mean?” Mrs. Klein continued. “Can you draw? Can you play a sport? Can you play a musical
instrument? Can you sing?
Mrs. Klein continued listing talents, but Takehito stopped listening as his gazing wandered to a poster on the
wall. The poster showed a person doing breakdance (霹雳舞).
“Dancing. I will breakdance!” Takehito interrupted.
Mrs. Klein’s eyes lit up with encouragement. “That’s fantastic, Takehito! Breakdancing is a great choice. I’m
sure you’ll do an amazing job.” Her smile was reassuring, and she added, “The talent show is three months away,
so you have plenty of time to prepare. I’ll be here to help you prepare if you need it.”
注意:(1)续写词数应为150个左右;(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
That evening, Takehito sat at the dinner table with his mother.
