Brown High School has an independent reading program every summer. Our goals for independent reading include knowing oneself as a reader, understanding how to find what one 试卷第 1 页,共 3 页loves to read for fun, and learning how to connect with others around books and reading. To that end, we offer you our summer reading program. You can see the introductions to reading clubs on this page and click different links to see more detailed information. Every student must join at least one book club this summer. Club 1: For students who like reading books in which famous people write about their own life. Club 2: For students who like reading long written stories in which the characters and events are not usually in real life. Club 3: For students who like reading pieces of writing that express emotions, experiences, and ideas, especially in short lines using words that have the same last sound. Club 4: For students who like reading news reports describing real events and people. However, we strongly recommend that one of the books you choose be an “unlikely choice”. An “unlikely choice” will be a type of book that you-wouldn't normally pick. This helps readers to walk outside their comfort zones or usual selections. To discover your “unlikely choice”, explore the Peer page in which your classmates will recommend their favorite books and the Senior page in which teachers will pick their favorite books for students. Parents/ caregivers may want to explore the Staff page to learn more about how to support their children's independent reading. If students want to get some advice on the choice of books from professional authors, please click the Pro link for more information. 21.Where is this text probably taken from? A.A school textbook. But as we chatted, 试卷第 1 页,共 3 页they slowly started to sound more like themselves. They told me personal stories I’d never heard. I learned about the first time my dad got drunk. Mum talked about getting in trouble for staying out late. They gave me life advice and told me things about their childhoods, as well as my own. It was amazing. For a moment I forgot I wasn’t really talking to my parents at all, but to their digital copies. This Mum and Dad live inside an app on my phone as voice assistants created by the company HereAfter AI. The company’s goal is to let the living communicate with the dead. Technology like this, which lets you “talk” to people who have died, has been a mainstay of science fiction for decades. But now it’s becoming a reality, thanks to advances in AI and voice technology. I wanted to test out what it might be like. My real, flesh-and-blood parents are still alive and well; their virtual versions (虚拟版) were made just to help me understand the technology. But their digital copies offer a glimpse at a world where it’s possible to have conversations with loved ones long after they’re gone. From what I could know over a dozen conversations with my virtual parents, this really will make it easier to keep the people we loved close. It’s not hard to see the attraction. People might turn to digital copies for comfort, or to mark special occasions like anniversaries. But for some, this tech may be alarming or frightening. When I talked to friends about this article, some of them just went away. There’s a common, deeply held belief that we shouldn’t mess with death. But I’m only human, and that worry ends up being washed away by the even scarier possibility of losing the people I love. If technology might help me hang onto them, is it so wrong to try? 24.Why did the writer chat with his virtual parents? A.To remember his late parents. B.To learn more about his parents. C.To see how the technology works. D.To find ways to improve the technology. 25.What can we learn about the technology mentioned? A.It allows users to live on an app. B.It leads users to lose their friends. C.It is invented by a science fiction writer. D.It offers a link between the dead and the living. 试卷第 1 页,共 3 页26.What is the writer’s attitude towards the technology? A.Supportive. B.Unclear. C.Objective. D.Doubtful. 27.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text? A.Your can talk to your parents. B.Parents appear on your phone. C.AI means never having to say goodbye. D.A breakthrough in AI may benefit you. C Imagining being asked to spend twelve or so years of your life in a society which consisted only of members of own sex. How would you react? Unless there was something definitely wrong with you, you wouldn’t be too happy about it, to say the least. It is all the more surprising therefore that so many parents in the world choose to impose such abnormal conditions on their children conditions which they themselves wouldn’t put up with for one minute! Any discussion of this topic is bound to question the aims of education. Stuffing children’s heads full of knowledge is far from being foremost among them. One of the chief aims of educations is to equip future citizens with all they require to take their place in adult society. Now adult society is made up of men and women, so how can a segregated school possibly offer the right sort of preparation for it? Anyone entering adult society after years of segregation can only be in for a shock. A co-educational school offers children nothing less than a true version of society in miniature. Boys and girls are given the opportunity to get to know each other, to learn to live together from their earliest years. They are put in a position where they can compare themselves with each other in terms of academic ability, athletic achievement and many of the extra-curricular activities which are part of school life. What a practical advantage it is(to give just a small example)to be able to put on a school play in which the male parts will be taken by boys and the female parts by girls! What nonsense co-education makes of the argument that boys are cleverer than girl or vice-versa. When segregated, boys and girls are made to feel that they are a race apart. Rivalry between the sexes is fostered. In a coeducational school, everything falls into its proper place. But perhaps the greatest contribution of co-education is the healthy attitude to life it encourages. Boys don’t grow up believing that women are mysterious creatures-airy goddesses, more like book-illustrations to a fairy-tale, than human beings. Girls don’t grow up imagining that men 试卷第 1 页,共 3 页are romantic heroes. 28.What is the best title for this passage? A.Only co-education can be in harmony with society. B.People are in great need of co-education. C.Any form of education other than co-education is simply unthinkable. D.Co-education has many features. 29.What does co-education offer to children? A.A society. B.A true small model of society. C.A real life. D.A version of social condition. 30.According to the passage, what is one of the chief aims of education? A.It is for students to acquire knowledge. B.It is to equip future citizens with scientific technology. C.It is to equip future citizens with what is required in getting a position in society. D.It is for students to get academic achievements. 31.Why do boys and girls in co-education have no illusion about each other? A.They live together and know each other too well. B.Years of living together at school dismiss such illusion. C.Co-education encourage them to have an healthy attitude toward life. D.They are familiar with each other’ s problems. D Save the gorilla (大猩猩)! Protect tigers! Help the giant kangaroo rats! You’ve probably heard the first two slogans but maybe not the last one. We’re often interested in supporting the protection of animals like gorillas and tigers but less concerned for creatures like rats. Are our stereotypes (刻板印象) affecting which animals we choose to protect? Researchers have studied how people view animals based on two qualities: “warmth” (how friendly we think they are) and “competence” (how capable they seem). Animals we see as companions, such as dogs and monkeys, score high in both warmth and competence. This makes us eager to protect them. Predators (捕食者) like tigers and bears are seen as competent but not very warm. While some people admire these animals, others may fear or hunt them. Animals 试卷第 1 页,共 3 页viewed as prey (猎物), like cows and rabbits, often receive less attention, but people are prepared to actively harm those considered pests, such as rats and mice. However, this might not be the full story. National Geographic Magazine asked their readers which animals were the most important to save. Four of the top five fit the companion or predator types-elephants, tigers, whales and polar bears. But the most popular animal to save was the bee. It seems that apart from concerns around warmth and competence, people are aware how species can affect the wider ecosystem and value bees as pollinators (传粉者). At present, 27,000 species are becoming extinct every year. How do zoos and protection projects decide which animals to support? One factor is the importance of an animal to the wider ecosystem, but this can lead to some difficult choices. It’s reported that in Australia, koalas are much less important to the ecosystem than some lesser-known animals such as woylies. However, they also suggest a solution to this issue. To conserve cute animals, such as koalas, it’s important to protect their entire habitat-and this can save a wide variety of species. It could be that many animals can be sheltered by koalas’ cuteness. 32.What’s the focus of the research? A.How human views affect animal protection efforts. B.What qualities different types of animal species have. C.How human activities influence wildlife populations. D.What characteristics affect public interest in species. 33.What do we know from paragraph 2? A.Companions are more capable than others. B.Predators are always feared and hunted. C.Animals seen as friendly are more protected. D.Pests are generally well-liked by people. 34.Why are bees an important species to save? A.They are popular pets among humans. B.They rank high in warmth and competence. C.They are the largest pollinators in ecosystems. D.They support species variety through pollination. 35.What’s the purpose of mentioning koalas in the last paragraph? A.To highlight the popularity of certain cute animals. B.To offer suggestions on effective koalas protection. 试卷第 1 页,共 3 页C.To stress the difficulty of making conservation decisions. D.To inform readers of the importance of habitat protection. 第二节(共 5 小题:每小题 2. 5 分, 满分 12. 5 分) 阅读短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Learning a new language is more than a skill. It gives you an opportunity to understand other cultures. 36 . Choose a language This is a personal decision. 37 If you enjoy studying Japanese history and culture, you may want to add Japanese to the list. Perhaps you’re planning to vacation in Brazil and decide to learn Portuguese before the trip. Maybe you live in an area with many Spanish speakers and believe being bilingual (双语的) will increase your job opportunities. 38 This is important because you need to know which words to use to express yourself and understand what you hear and see. According to the International Center for Language Studies, knowing between 4,000 and 10,000 words in a language typically makes you an advanced speaker. Accept mistakes Mistakes are a common part of the process when learning a language. You may choose the wrong word, change vowel sounds, or use the present tense form of a verb when talking about something that happened last week. When you make a mistake, pay attention to the advice you get. 39 . Set aside time to practice 40 . According to the US Department of State’s Foreign Service Institute, a native English speaker typically needs between 600 and 750 class hours to learn languages like Dutch, French, Italian, and Spanish. You’ll spend around 900 class hours learning German, Haitian Creole, and Swahili. Sometimes you need to learn languages with fewer features in common with English. Then you’d better put in at least 1,100 class hours. A.Build your vocabulary B.Keep trying before setting a goal C.Focus on the 100 most commonly used words 试卷第 1 页,共 3 页D.Try out these steps for how to learn a new language E.Learning a new language takes time and needs regular practice F.Your interests, needs, and goals can help you narrow your choices G.For example, the person you’re talking to may correct your grammar or vocabulary choice 第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分 30 分) 第一节(共 15 小题:每小题 1 分,满分 15 分) 阅读下面短文, 从每题所给的 A、B、C、D 四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 Graduation ceremonies are often filled with proud families, smiling seniors and words of encouragement. Mutterer 48 his seniors during the school’s graduation ceremony, calling it an absolute honor to 49 this excellent class. Mutterer wanted to 50 them with something. “Inside that letter, there’s a single dollar bill,” Mutterer said. “It might seem 51 , but if 443 kids are doing random acts of kindness every day, it has a huge 52 .” “He made every one of us feel seen and loved,” said one student after the graduation ceremony. “Hopefully we get to 53 the kindness one day and make other people feel important and appreciated.” Mutterer’s parting 54 to his students was more than a goodbye. I was concerned about my weight and tried every new diet I read about online, but it didn’t work 59 (effective). Once I started thinking about 62 (fit) rather than weight, things began to change. Rather than 63 (cut) out the foods I enjoyed, I added healthy foods to my meals. Besides, I would go out for a run or do push-ups. Finally, I stopped comparing with models 64 looking for things that were wrong with my face or body. It was an exciting adventure for all of us: my parents, my six-year-old sister Kelly and I. The journey was filled with laughter and joy as we sang songs and shared stories, also expressing the anticipation of the new adventure. As we drove along the way, we noticed a car parking by the roadside with its lights blinking (闪烁). A man stood by the car, a look of helplessness on his face as he stared at his car. My father, always a warm-hearted man, slowed down and pulled over to offer assistance. We all got out of the car, curious and concerned about the situation. The man, introducing himself as Samon, explained that he had a flat tire (轮胎), and he had called for roadside assistance and was waiting for help. But he said his one-year-old son was inside the car, crying and clearly upset by the delay. Kelly, with a warm heart, decided to give her 试卷第 1 页,共 3 页favorite toy to the little boy to comfort him. The toy, with a jingling sound, made the boy’s tears stop right away, even bringing a smile to the boy’s face. Samon thanked us profusely (多次). Then we continued on our way with a renewed sense of happiness. Upon arriving in Seattle, we were amazed by everything of the city. We explored the vibrant Pike Place Market and watched as fishmongers threw fish to one another with practiced ease, their customers cheering them on. My sister’s eyes sparkled with excitement as she received a flower from a kind trader. We spent three days enjoying immersive exploration in Seattle. After that, we decided it was time to head back home. Before we left, my father made a reservation in a famous local restaurant to say goodbye to the city with a memorable meal. 注意: 1.续写词数应为 150 个左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 As we entered the restaurant, we were greeted by a familiar face. _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ That night, as we drove back home, we reflected on (回想) our trip. _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________ 试卷第 1 页,共 3 页
