I have a long history with letter writing, beginning when I was 8 years old. My first pen pal was Abuela, my
great-grandmother in Puerto Rico. Then I was writing to my sisters, friends from summer camp and even my husband.
I’ve still kept these letters after all these years.
In a letter, there’s more heart involved (包含) and less hurry. It requires a pen, stamp, envelope and mailbox trip,
unlike hurried texts or emails.
Through my work as a biographer (传记作家), I’ve observed how special letters can be. In one beautiful letter
I read, 22-year-old Doug wrote to his bride-to-be (准新娘), Mitch, about their future together: “Dance a little… walk
together, enjoy each other’s company, laugh a little, cry a little.” Fifty-nine years later, as I read the faded (褪色的)
ink on a rough page, I was moved by his timeless message.
Although I met Doug as an 82-year-old during interviews, I truly knew him through letters he wrote to Mitch.
His pure (纯粹) devotion to her was clear in every letter, right up to when she was moved to a memory care unit,
unable to recognize him anymore.
After I finished writing Doug’s life story, we stayed in touch by phone, but more often we wrote letters to each
other purely because it brought us mutual joy.
Last Tuesday, when a letter arrived from Doug’s son, Bruce, my heart sank.
Bruce’s letter announcing Doug’s death also included an unfinished one from Doug addressed to me. It was
clear that he had struggled to write it with his shaky hands, making his effort even more touching.
This small, simple pleasure in life — letter writing — is something I’m unwilling to give up, despite the busyness
of the ever-spinning (不断旋转的) world around me. I’m sure I’ll also do it until my dying days.
24. What does the author believe is special about letters compared to texts or emails?
A. They are more formal.
B. They involve a more personal touch.
C. They can be kept for a longer time.
D. They require more writing time.
25. What did the author learn about Doug through his letters?
A. His love for his wife.
B. His sense of humor.
C. His career achievements.
D. His hobbies and interests.
26 How did the author feel when receiving an unfinished letter from Doug?
A. Confused.
B. Surprised.
C. Moved.
D. Brokenhearted.
27. What is the author’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To encourage people to only write letters.
B. To remember her relationship with Doug.
C. To compare different communication methods.
D. To share her opinions about letter writing.
C
Our future selves used to be a riddle. Now, thanks to social media filters (滤镜), we can stare them right in the
face. People fell in love with TikTok this month to share themselves “aging” in real time using a filter “time travel”.
Set to a sad song, the effect shows the user’s face slowly getting older, complete with wrinkles (皱纹) and sunspots.
Camera filters that age you have been around for years. But advancements in AI are making the results more
real. Doctor Aleksandra Brown said the TikTok time travel filter does well in guessing how a given face would age.
As we get older, our facial skin thins, fat dissolves (溶解) and gravity pulls everything downward. Not everyone
is pleased about this. One of Brown’s friends didn’t like watching time fly past. She couldn’t stand watching herself
age 50 years in 15 seconds-could life really go by that fast? Brown cried herself after using the aging effect on her
own young daughter. She won’t live to see her daughter get that old, she pointed out.
For other people, the time travel filter brought up unexpected positive feelings. Actor Jonathan Bennett shared
a video saying his own filtered face recalled happy memories of his late father. Nicole Loehle, a 24-year-old in New
Jersey, tested the effect with her boyfriend. It gave her a new viewpoint, she said, she could imagine the relationship
lasting into their old age.
There’s no correct way to age. But it’s important to remember that no one can stop time or undo its effects. “I
keep trying to view aging as a gift.” Brown said, “Some people don’t get to age, unfortunately?”
28. What can people do with the filter “time travel”?
A. Find their partners.
B. See their aging faces.
C. Experience others’ lives.
D. Guess their future success.
29. What are Paragraph 3 and Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. Reminders of the good old days.
B. Reasons for using the aging effect.
C. Reflections on close personal relationships.
D. Responses to the aging effect of “time travel”.
30. Which of the following would Brown probably agree with?
A. It’s good to watch time fly past.
B. The “time travel” needs advancements.
C. Not everyone is fortunate enough to get old.
D. TickTok invented the first app with aging effect.
31. What can be the best title for the text?
A. TikTok’s “time travel”: slowly or quickly
B. TikTok’s “time travel”: backward or forward
C. TikTok’s “time travel”: to enjoy or to suffer
D. TikTok’s “time travel”: to develop or to drop
D
Chinese hit video game Black Myth: Wukong has taken the gaming world by storm, selling more than 10
million copies across all platforms in just three days after its release on Aug 20, according to the game’s developer
Game Science.
The game is inspired by the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West (《西游记》). In it, players take the
role of the Destined One, a monkey following in the footsteps of the Monkey King on a journey to collect six
Relics that once belonged to Sun Wukong and challenge the Celestial Court.
Based on a rich heritage of nearly 1,000 years of Chinese culture, the game’s storyline and characters have
proven difficult to understand for many players, especially those from Western countries. For instance, a player
shared on social media that their lack of familiarity with Journey to the West led to them consistently (不断地)
missing hidden treasures, finally resulting in repeated failures during a boss fight in Chapter 2. At the same time,
some players feel overwhelmed (不知所措的) by names like Erlang Shen and Lingxuzi, which can be difficult to
pronounce for those unfamiliar with Chinese phonetics.
To bridge these cultural divides, numerous Western fans have devoted great time and effort. One enthusiast
wrote a 200-page outline detailing Sun Wukong’s abilities across all 100 chapters of Journey to the West. Another
fan named Cas immersed (使沉浸) himself in the epic by checking out TV shows, and online encyclopedias (百科
全书). Through this process, Western players have not only refined their gaming skills but also developed a
deeper appreciation for Sun Wukong and Journey to the West.
“Although many people might want to compare Sun Wukong to Western superheroes, I believe that they are
different, especially in terms of their moral codes,” said Patrick McCarthy from the US. “Sun Wukong gives off a
carefree, independent and chaotic (混乱的) nature, unlimited by the need to set a good example for others like
Spider-Man or Superman, who by contrast follow strict principles like ‘with great power comes great
responsibility’.”
Journey to the West offers a comprehensive narrative that covers a very dangerous journey, numerous
encounters and the exploration of various cultures. Its diversity makes it a rich source for diverse storytelling types
and cultural backgrounds, said China Daily.
32. What has made it challenging for some Western players to understand the game’s storyline and characters?
A. The overuse of hidden treasures.
B. The large number of characters in the game.
C. Unfamiliarity with Chinese culture and mythology.
D. Difficulty in understanding the Chinese phonetics.
33. What does the underlined word “refined” in paragraph 4 most likely mean?
A. Improved.
B. Changed.
C. Displayed.
D. Shared.
34. According to Patrick McCarthy, how is Sun Wukong different from Western superheroes?
A. He has greater power.
B. He uses fewer weapons.
C. He values personal freedom above all else.
D. He is more responsible for what he does.
35. Which of the following best describes Black Myth: Wukong?
A. Controversial.
B. Successful.
C. Experimental.
D. Costly.

Memory can be a curious thing. Why can you so easily recall the name of the kid you sat next to in first grade
but can’t remember where you left your cell phone five minutes ago? Don’t worry — there’s probably nothing wrong
with your brain. It’s more likely that you’re just distracted (注意力分散的).
Our attention is limited, which means we can’t focus on everything around us. ____36____. We talked to experts
and explored the science to find tips and tricks to help improve your memory.
Write it by hand
If you’re struggling to remember information you typed onto your computer or tapped out on your smartphone,
there may be a reason for it. Our brains remember things better when we write them by hand. ____37____. A 2021
study published in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience backs this up.
Have a home for everything
If your biggest memory problem is not ever being able to find anything, there’s a simple solution to help you
with this: ____38____. For example, keep the remote control (遥控器) on the table next to the couch and have a
regular spot (固定的地方) for other things you often misplace, like your phone, wallet, and keys. This way, you’ll
always know where to find them.
____39____
If you want to learn how to remember things better, pick up a pencil and eraser — or a puzzle app on your phone.
One study found that crossword puzzles can improve thinking and memory almost as much as a related prescription
medication (外方药) could. ____40____.
A. Play word games and puzzles
B. Keep your to-do lists up to date
C. We have to choose what to pay attention to
D. Make sure everything has a place, and always put it back there
E. Riddles, long or short, can also help you sharpen your brain
F. If you focus on the information that you’re trying to remember, you’re more likely to recall it later
G. One easy way to improve your memory is to make handwritten lists instead of digital ones

The smallest loaf of bread
Once there was a serious shortage (短缺,不足) of food in the town. A rich and kind baker called all the
poorest children in town to his bakery (面包店) and gave one loaf of bread to each of them and told them to come
back every day for bread until the hard days ended.
Rather than being thankful for the baker’s kindness, many of the children fought over who would get the
largest loaf. They complained, were bitter (愤愤不平的) about their present situation, and were just out for what
they could get.
However, among the crowd was a neatly dressed little girl who had a different attitude. Day after day,
patiently, she waited for the others to stop fighting, and she gratefully took the smallest loaf. Then, she thanked the
baker and happily brought the loaf home to share with her family.
One day, while slicing (把……切成薄片) the bread, her mother found several silver coins inside the loaf.
Quite surprised, she showed her daughter what she had discovered in the bread.
The next day, as usual, the children went back to the bakery. Some impatient children couldn’t wait to get the
bread. Some kept their eyes on the big loaf. Still others were making a noise, taking the baker’s kindness and
generosity for granted. The little girl also returned. Holding out the palm of her hand, the girl showed the silver
coins to the baker and said, “Sir, we found your money inside the loaf of bread that you so generously gave to us.
You must have accidentally dropped the coins while you were baking the loaf.” This somehow didn’t surprise the
baker. He got closer to the little girl smilingly and said lovingly, “No, no, my child. I did not make a mistake.”
Hearing this, the crowd were curious about what would happen and began to quiet down.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150 个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“Keep the money. This is a reward for you!” the baker added.

“Keep the money. This is a reward for you!” the baker added. “A reward for me?” the girl was quite
surprised. All these days, she was deeply grateful to the baker for his generosity and understanding. Now she
wondered why she deserved the “reward”. Noticing her hesitation, the baker patted her on the head kindly, saying,
“You are always kind, patient and grateful. You know good things often come to those who can wait and be
thankful. You are worth it.” With these words, he gently took the girl to the front and patiently explained to the kids
what had happened.
Moved by the girl’s story the children lowered their heads in shame. Everything began to change. They
waited in line. There were no more complaints, arguments or fighting for the largest loaf. Every kid took the bread
politely and offered thanks to the baker. What a heart-warming scene! The little girl, with her quiet grace, had
become a symbol of hope and a reminder that even in the most challenging times, virtues like patience, gratitude,
and honesty could lead to unexpected blessings.
