The manatee is one of the most endangered animals in America. Today, with only a few thousand left in the
world, these special ocean animals could easily die out.
Looking something like a cross between a dolphin and a hippo（河
马）manatees have been described as “giant grey sweet potatoes ”.
They are commonly known as sea cows because of their size and
plant-based diet. Manatees live on sea grass, much like cows live on grass in
fields. An adult manatee eats about 70 kg of sea grass every day. Growing up to 3 m long and weighing 1,000 kg or
more, these gentle giants of the ocean are harmless. In fact, they are known to be friendly.
Manatees live in the shallow（浅的）coastal seas and rivers. They are long-lived animals, reaching ages
of more than fifty years. However, they give birth to only one baby every two to five years.
Weather change is one of the dangers to manatees. It has led to fast growing of some poisonous (有毒的）water
plants that can kill manatees and the sea grass that they eat. Some manatees also die of diseases.
However, most manatees die because of people's activities. Humans not only destroy the manatees' homes, they
also kill or hurt them as a result of their carelessness. Being slow swimmers near coasts, manatees are always in
dan ger of being hit by fast-moving boats. Sometimes they also eat fishing hooks（鱼钩）or rubbish, or get
caught in traps.
According to the Save the Manatee Club, almost 800 manatees died in 2009. The US state of Florida has set up
special safe areas for them where boats are not allowed. They have also passed laws that require boats to slow

Zhalong is a nature reserve in Heilongjiang in northeast China. It is one of the world’s most important
wetlands. The area provides food and shelter for wildlife. It is an ideal home for different kinds of plants, fish and
birds.
Many birds live comfortably in Zhalong Nature Reserve all year round, while some only stay for a short time.
There are many fish in the wetlands, and the birds can easily catch them for food. Zhalong Nature Reserve is an
important living area for the rare red-crowned cranes. There are not many red-crowned cranes in the world. Some
of them live in Zhalong.
Some people want to change the wetlands to make more space for farms and buildings. This means that there
will be less and less space for wildlife.
More and more birds are in danger because they do not have enough living space. Many of them died. The
Chinese government wants to protect these endangered birds, and they can be safe in Zhalong.
Every year a lot of tourists go to Zhalong to watch birds. This year members of our Bird watching Club are

Jane Goodall is a famous scientist. For more than 40 years，Goodall lived
mostly in Tanzania in East Africa，studying chimpanzees.
As a young child，Jane Goodall was interested in animals. She grew up in

Natural competition happens when species (物种) compete for food and living places. An example of an

We have caused animals to get endangered too. The pollution that we create destroys (破坏) many animals’
