Non-Routine Questions 2

Thinking Skill: Sequencing
A sequence shows the order of a series of numbers. Sequencing is a thinking
skill that requires us to place numbers in a particular order.
There are many terms in a sequence. ‘Terms’ refers to the numbers in a
sequence.
1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, …
1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th
term term term term term term
To place these numbers in the correct order, you must first find the rule that
generates the sequence. In a simple arithmetic sequence, you can either add or
subtract to find the unknown terms in the sequence.
1st step: Observe if the sequence is in an increasing or a decreasing order.
2nd step: Choose two consecutive terms. Add or subtract to find the difference
between each term.
3rd step: Use the result to test and find all the unknown terms in the
sequence.
