At a workshop in Yongjia, East China’s Zhejiang Province, a piece of boxwood rests quietly on the workbench. Before making the first cut, 53-year-old woodcarver Ye Xiaopeng often spends time working out the overall composition, and the expressions of his figures he wants to convey. In his view, woodcarving is not simply about carving what you see; a craftsman has to think through what he wants to express before putting knife to wood.

To outsiders, we may take it for granted that someone born into a family of woodcarvers would follow the same path. But Ye believes that what has truly shaped his artistic vision is not only the craft passed down through generations, but also the influence of reading.

Ye’s earliest reading memories had little to do with art theory. What left the deepest impression on him, however, was a copy of the book, Back to Beginnings, which was the first book that made him realize how reading could shape the way a person thinks. Looking back, he believes the book’s influence lay not in any particular knowledge it provided, but in the way it encouraged him to observe the world and reflect on it. “The influence wasn’t obvious,” he said. “It was more like the grain (纹理) hidden inside a piece of wood, forming for decades, shaping both my work and my life.” After entering the arts-and-crafts world, reading gradually evolved from a personal interest to a professional necessity. From learning carving techniques and copying traditional designs to studying sculptural references and materials on the history of sculpture, books remained a constant companion throughout his professional development.

In Ye’s view, a sculptor can observe a figure’s expression or posture from everyday life, but the cultural meanings and spiritual qualities behind the artwork must be built through reading. “Life provides vivid images; reading provides cultural depth,” he said. Every turned page strengthens a thread that links knowledge and experience, the present and the past, and ultimately, creativity and tradition.

24.What does Ye usually do before carving?

A.Refer to prior ideas.B.Go through relevant books.

C.Map out the full picture.D.Consult with experienced seniors.

25.How did Back to Beginnings influence Ye?

A.By offering carving skills.B.By inspiring deep reflection.

C.By strengthening family bonds.D.By providing useful solutions.

26.What can best describe Ye?

A.Thoughtful and committed.B.Old-fashioned and persistent.

C.Reserved and knowledgeable.D.Ambitious and straightforward.

27.What can we infer from Ye’s words in the last paragraph?

A.Tradition holds back creativityB.Life and reading fuel true art.

C.Life experience outweighs reading.D.Enough reading guarantees success.

PFAS, also known as forever chemicals, are found in drinking water, food, and household products. These chemicals have been linked to negative health outcomes, including certain cancers.

PFAS are widely used because they are highly durable and can resist both water and oil. However, they do not break down easily in the environment and can linger in the human body. According to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, nearly everyone in the United States has PFAS in their blood.

Eliminating PFAS is almost impossible, and researchers are still determining which actions are most effective at reducing exposure. However, studies show that when exposure decreases, PFAS levels in the body can gradually decline over several years.

Drinking water can be an important source of exposure. If testing shows high PFAS levels in water and the community has not installed filtration (过滤) systems, it is advisable to purchase a household filter certified to treat PFAS contamination (污染物).

According to the National Academies report, diet is likely the primary way people are exposed to PFAS in places without drinking water contamination. Some meat, dairy products and chicken eggs have been found to contain PFAS chemicals, but according to the Food and Drug Administration, most detectable PFAS were found in seafood. Produce grown with contaminated water can also become a source of exposure.

PFAS have been widely used in consumer products because they make items waterproof, slippery, durable, or stain-resistant. They may be found in cookware, waterproof clothing, carpets, tablecloths, and other household products. However, there is currently insufficient evidence that simply changing consumer products significantly reduces PFAS exposure.

Fortunately, many manufacturers are phasing out PFAS. Companies such as 3M and BASF have reduced or stopped their use, while major retailers (零售商) and brands are also working to make their products PFAS-free. Research shows that as the production and use of certain PFAS declined, levels of those chemicals in Americans’ blood also fell over time, which can be conducive to public health.

28.Why are PFAS widely used?

A.They are watery.B.They are chemically stable.

C.They are unbreakable.D.They are readily available.

29.Which of the following may contain higher levels of PFAS?

A.Filtered water.B.Cotton clothes.C.Nonstick cookers.D.Freshwater fish.

30.What does the underlined word “conducive” in the last paragraph mean?

A.Subject.B.Favorable.C.Devoted.D.Related.

31.What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.PFAS: Sources of ExposureB.PFAS: Forever Pollutants

C.PFAS: Application and ReductionD.PFAS: Prospects and Challenges

A girl who turns up to school dressed head-to-toe in pink will probably pass unnoticed. If a boy does the same, he will inevitably face stares. Even the most non-traditional parent would think twice about exposing their son to that.

Children start paying attention to gender differences much earlier than some parents realize, according to psychologist Christia Brown. “Society emphasizes that gender is important really early in a kid’s life,” she says. “We label it a lot in our language — we use gender as nouns all the time. So we frequently say ‘oh, there’s that girl’ or ‘come on boys, let’s go.’” Research suggests children’s recognition of gender is more due to adults pointing it out than any inborn awareness of it.

Gendered toys credit certain types of skills and strengths to one gender or the other. So, when a child only plays with toys marketed for their gender, they learn a certain set of skills but do not engage as much in other types of learning. This can lead to imbalanced development as they grow older.

The biggest concern around buying gendered toys is that they can impact how children see themselves. Gendered representation imposes society’s ideas of what they should like and do instead of letting them choose for themselves what their interests and hobbies are. This can have an influence on what that child decides to study in school and ultimately choose as a career.

Many retailers have made real progress over the last few years, dropping gender labels in stores and online — a new research shows a 70% decrease in the use of online gender navigation options since 2012 — but there’s still work to do to challenge the stereotyped (老一套的) ways that toys are often packaged and promoted.

Researchers hope that one day, toys will stop being broken up by gender and will instead be categorized by type, like puzzle toys, dolls or children’s bikes. Instead of being just pink or blue, they would come in every color of the rainbow. Toy choices should be based on kids’ personal interests, and not on their gender.

32.What does Christia Brown say about gender differences?

A.They are probably unnoticed.B.They are socially constructed.

C.They are biologically determined.D.They are universally acknowledged.

33.What aspects of children are negatively affected by gendered toys?

A.Their academic performance.B.Their interpersonal relationship.

C.Their behaviours and attitudes.D.Their physical strength and fitness.

34.What is the author’s attitude to retailers’ progress?

A.Mixed.B.Uncaring.

C.Fully supportive.D.Strongly doubtful.

35.What do the researchers expect of future toys?

A.They should be colourful.B.They should be gender-neutral.

C.They should cater to kids’ tastes.D.They should cover wider categories.

How to Study Effectively

Studying efficiently is key to achieving your academic goals. Let’s explore some strategies for developing effective study habits and techniques.

To begin with, it is advisable to structure your study sessions into 1-hour blocks. By spending an hour on each subject, you can conduct thorough reviews without feeling too stressed.     36     For more extensive assignments such as papers or projects, break them down into manageable tasks that can be completed within the hour.

Taking regular breaks is equally important to prevent mental boredom. Spare 5 — 10 minutes every hour to relax and recharge.     37     These breaks not only refresh your mind but also sustain your motivation to absorb as much information as possible.

38     Avoid noisy or distracting (令人分心的) surroundings by opting for a separate and isolated spot like your room with the door closed or a peaceful area in the school library. If living with others, kindly request their cooperation in maintaining a quiet atmosphere during your study sessions.

Remove distractions such as electronic devices that may distract your attention from the study material.     39     If surrounding noise persists, consider wearing headphones and playing relaxing instrumental music to aid concentration.

Forming a study group with classmates can enhance your motivation and comprehension of the material. Engage in group learning activities like quizzing each other, solving problems together, or explaining concepts to one another.     40

A.Begin your study session by focusing on challenging concepts.

B.Select a quiet study environment that helps with concentration.

C.Go through the concepts you have the most trouble with before class.

D.Use this time to check your phone, go for a short walk, or grab a snack.

E.Switch your phone to “Do Not Disturb” mode, and turn off the TV and computer.

F.Focusing on one subject per block helps prevent confusion between different courses.

G.Encouraging active participation among group members can deepen understanding of the topic and promote effective knowledge comprehension.

I joined the campus TV station in my first year of high school, dying to be an on-camera reporter. I’d practiced interview skills and stage presence for ages, so when I was assigned the     41     of video editor, I sank into disappointment. It seemed like a     42     job: no spotlight, no audience acceptance, just     43     behind a computer screen all day.

For the first two weeks, I handled the work casually, and never     44     to learn advanced editing skills. I kept telling myself this wasn’t what I’d     45    . Then came the campus Top 10 Singers contest. I rushed through the editing, and the final video felt flat and out of place. The adviser didn’t scold me, but a viewer’s     46    — “the show lacks rhythm” —     47     me more than any criticism.

That night, I reflected long and hard. I’d been     48     the role simply because it wasn’t what I’d pictured. The next day, I arrived two hours early and     49     every editing function carefully. I stayed late to     50     shot transitions with the director, matching each clip to the mood of the songs.

On the day the video was released, I sat before the screen,     51     watching the view count climb. When the comments flooded in, all applauding the “touching rhythm” and “perfect pace”, I felt a warmth I’d never     52     before.

I’ve since learned that     53     doesn’t always come from standing in front of the camera. Every position     54    , and every effort pays off — even if it’s not the one you desired initially. Sometimes the most meaningful growth happens off     55    , in the quiet work that holds everything together.

第二节(满分25分)

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Samuel Frappier, a 19-year-old climber from Quebec, was climbing down Longs Peak in Colorado with a friend when they got separated. Trying a shortcut, Samuel ended up trapped on a narrow ledge at 4,000 metres, with a sheer rock wall below him.

“I spent all night shivering on a small rock,” he later recalled. “If I slipped just one foot more, I would have fallen to my death.”

He called park rangers with his cellphone and directed them to his location. But rescue workers could not reach him until the next day. Wearing only a T-shirt and tennis shoes, with a few granola bars to eat, Samuel waited through the freezing night.

At one point, a helicopter appeared and seemed to circle without landing. “It was terrible,” Samuel said. “I thought it was just turning around and never coming back.”

His father, Denis, was deeply shaken when he saw a photo of his son clinging to the cliff. “I didn’t realize how bad the situation was until I saw how steep the mountain was,” he said. Yet he never lost faith. “He’s so strong mentally that I thought he would get through it.”

As the hours dragged on, Samuel’s phone battery was dying. He knew he had to conserve it, so he turned it off and tried to stay as still as possible. The wind howled around him, and the temperature dropped below freezing. Twice he nearly dozed off, but each time he forced his eyes open, knowing that falling asleep could mean falling to his death.

When dawn finally broke, he saw the rescue team in the distance, slowly making their way up the treacherous (险峻的) slope. His heart pounded — not with fear this time, but with hope.

注意:续写词数应为150左右。

Paragraph 1:

As the rescue workers finally reached Samuel, he knew he had to act carefully.

Paragraph 2:

When Samuel finally stood on safe ground, a wave of emotion washed over him.
