Unit 1 is the "toolbox" for all of junior high school geography. Later topics like Earth's movements, climate distribution, and regional knowledge all build on two basic skills: finding places on a graticule and reading maps. For exams, this unit focuses on three core areas: reading graticule coordinates and dividing hemispheres, comparing and using map scales, and reading contour maps. These appear often in multiple-choice, map-filling, and comprehensive questions. Below, we go through each section point by point. 第一节 地球仪 Section 1: The Globe 一、地球的形状与大小(识记类考点) The Shape and Size of the Earth (memory-based exam points) 人类对地球形状的认识经历了从猜想到证实、从定性到定量的过程。 Humans' understanding of Earth's shape went from guessing to proving, and from qualitative to quantitative. A common exam task is to match each stage of understanding with the right event. The first stage is intuitive guessing. In ancient China, people said "the sky is round like a canopy, and the earth is square like a chessboard." This is the "round sky, square earth" idea. This stage was based on what people saw with their eyes and on imagination. There was no real evidence. The second stage is inference. People saw that the sun and moon look round. During a lunar eclipse, they saw that the shadow of Earth on the moon has a curved edge. From this, they inferred that Earth might be a sphere. Also, ships coming back from the sea always show their masts first and then their bodies. This also supported the idea that Earth is a sphere. The third stage is proof by practice. In the 16th century, Magellan's fleet sailed around the world. For the first time, practice proved that Earth is a sphere. Note: Magellan himself did not finish the whole trip. After he died, the fleet kept sailing and finally returned to Spain. But textbooks usually say "Magellan's fleet sailed around the world and proved it." The fourth stage is scientific confirmation. In the 20th century, humans went into space. Photos of Earth taken by satellites let us see its shape directly. Through careful measurement, scientists confirmed that Earth is an irregular sphere, a little flat at the poles and a little bulging at the equator. These three numbers often appear in fill-in-the-blank or multiple-choice questions. Note that "average radius" is not the same as the equatorial radius. The equatorial radius is about 6,378 km, and the polar radius is about 6,357 km. The equatorial radius is about 21 km longer. This is the data behind "flat at the poles, bulging at the equator." Common exam tip: You may be given descriptions like "round sky, square earth," "Magellan's round-the-world sail," and "satellite photos," and asked to put them in time order or stage order. Or you may be asked "which event proved Earth is a sphere" (answer: the round-the-world sail). Be careful to tell "inference" apart from "proof." The Basic Structure of a Globe A globe is a model of Earth made smaller by a certain scale. You need to know three basic parts: Earth's axis: an imaginary turning line through the center of the globe. Note the word "imaginary." Earth's axis does not really exist. The axis meets Earth's surface at two points. The top one is the North Pole, and the bottom one is the South Pole. North Pole and South Pole: the two points where the axis meets Earth's surface. The North Pole is where the north end of the axis meets the surface. The South Pole is where the south end meets the surface. Lines of latitude and longitude: the grid system on a globe used to locate places. We will explain it in the next part. 三、经线与纬线的对比(高频选择题/判断题) Comparing Lines of Longitude and Latitude (common multiple-choice and true/false questions) 这是本单元最基础的对比性知识,必须从形状、长度、指示方向、相互关系四个维度准确区分。 This is the most basic comparison in this unit. You must tell them apart by shape, length, direction they show, and how they relate to each other. Features of lines of longitude: Definition: half-circle lines that connect the North and South Poles. They are also called meridians. Shape: half circles. Any two opposite lines of longitude (their degrees add up to 180°, one east and one west) can make a full circle. Length: all lines of longitude are equal in length. Direction: north-south. Relationship: all lines of longitude meet at the North and South Poles. Features of lines of latitude: Definition: circles that are perpendicular to Earth's axis and go all the way around Earth. Shape: circles (except at the poles, where a pole is just a point). Length: not equal. The equator is the longest. From the equator toward the poles, the circles get shorter and shorter, until they become a point at the poles. Direction: east-west. Relationship: all lines of latitude are parallel and never meet. Special lines: the 0° longitude line is called the Prime Meridian. It divides east longitude from west longitude. The 0° latitude line is called the equator. It is the longest line of latitude and divides the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Easy-to-mix-up tip: lines of longitude show north-south, and lines of latitude show east-west. This pairing is easy to mix up. Memory trick: lines of longitude connect the poles, so they "point" north-south. Lines of latitude go around Earth east-west, so they "point" east-west. 180°。 From the 0° line (Prime Meridian) going east, it is called east longitude, written "E." The numbers go from 0° eastward up to 180°. Going west, it is called west longitude, written "W." The numbers go from 0° westward up to 180°. The largest longitude is 180°. How to read: on a graticule map, look at the direction in which the numbers get bigger. If the longitude numbers get bigger toward the east, it is east longitude. If they get bigger toward the west, it is west longitude. Starting from the equator (0° latitude), going north is north latitude, written "N." The numbers go from 0° northward up to 90°. Going south is south latitude, written "S." The numbers go from 0° southward up to 90°. The largest latitude is 90° (at the poles). How to read: if the latitude numbers get bigger toward the north, it is north latitude. If they get bigger toward the south, it is south latitude. Note: the borders of latitude zones (30°, 60°) are different from the borders of the five temperature zones (23.5°, 66.5°). Do not mix them up. 五、半球的划分(最大易错点) Dividing the Hemispheres (the biggest easy-to-miss point) 南北半球: 以赤道(0°纬线)为界。 Northern and Southern Hemispheres: divided by the equator (0° latitude). All north latitude is in the Northern Hemisphere. All south latitude is in the Southern Hemisphere. A point on the equator is in neither the Northern nor the Southern Hemisphere. Eastern and Western Hemispheres: divided by the longitude circle made of 20°W and 160°E. This is the easiest point to get wrong in the whole unit, because students often think 0° and 180° divide the Eastern and Western Hemispheres. 判断方法(口诀法): How to judge (memory rhyme): “小小为东,大大为西”。 "Small-small is east, big-big is west." If the longitude is east longitude (E): compare it with 160°. If it is less than 160°E, it is in the Eastern Hemisphere. If it is more than 160°E, it is in the Western Hemisphere. If the longitude is west longitude (W): compare it with 20°W. If it is less than 20°W, it is in the Eastern Hemisphere. If it is more than 20°W, it is in the Western Hemisphere. In short: east longitude less than 160° and west longitude less than 20° are in the Eastern Hemisphere. East longitude more than 160° and west longitude more than 20° are in the Western Hemisphere. For longitudes between 20°W and 160°E, the east longitude part is in the Eastern Hemisphere, and the west longitude part is in the Western Hemisphere. Why not use 0° and 180°? If we used 0° and 180°, many countries in Europe and Africa would be split into two hemispheres. The 20°W and 160°E circle mostly passes through oceans, so it cuts through the fewest countries on land. It is the best line people chose. This point sometimes appears as a short-answer question. 六、经纬网定位(综合应用题必考) Locating Places on a Graticule (must-test in comprehensive questions) 经纬网是经线和纬线交织形成的网格。 A graticule is a grid made by lines of longitude and latitude crossing each other. Any point on Earth's surface is where one line of longitude meets one line of latitude. How to write coordinates: latitude first, longitude second, inside brackets, separated by a comma. (40°N,116°E)。 For example, Beijing is roughly at (40°N, 116°E). When writing, note: N/S comes first, E/W comes second. Do not forget the degree sign. Steps to find coordinates on a graticule map: Step 1: Find the latitude. Look at the horizontal lines (lines of latitude). If the numbers get bigger going up, it is north latitude. If they get bigger going down, it is south latitude. If there are no numbers, look for the equator. Step 2: Find the longitude. Look at the vertical lines (lines of longitude). If the numbers get bigger to the right (east), it is east longitude. If they get bigger to the left (west), it is west longitude. Step 3: Write the coordinates in the order "latitude, longitude." Uses of the graticule: graticule location is widely used in sailing, aviation, the military, transportation, geology, weather, and other fields. This use is often the background for short-answer or material questions. You need to be able to list at least two fields. 第二节 地图 Section 2: Maps 一、地图的基本要素(三要素框架) The Basic Elements of a Map (the three-element framework) 地图是将某一区域的地理事物按一定比例缩小,并用符号表示在平面上的图形。 A map is a drawing that makes a region smaller by a certain scale and shows geographic things on a flat surface with symbols. Scale, direction, and legend are the three basic elements of a map. These three elements are the whole basis for reading maps. Reading any map starts with these three. Scale shows how much the map distance is smaller than the real distance. The formula is: scale = map distance ÷ real distance. When using the formula, the units of the top and bottom must be the same (usually both in centimeters). Three ways to write a scale: Number form: like 1:100,000, or 1/100,000. Word form: like "1 cm on the map means 1 km in real life." Line form: draw a line and mark 0, 1, 2 km, and so on. You need to be able to change one form into another. 0。 Conversion trick: to change centimeters to kilometers, remove five zeros. To change kilometers to centimeters, add five zeros. 1:13500000。 For example, 1:500,000 means 1 cm on the map is 5 km in real life. If the word form is "1 cm on the map means 135 km," the number form is 1:13,500,000. A scale is a fraction. When the top number is the same, the bigger the bottom number, the smaller the scale. The smaller the bottom number, the bigger the scale. For example, 1:3,000 is a bigger scale than 1:300,000, because the first bottom number is smaller. When comparing, first change all scales into number form, then judge. 比例尺大小与范围、内容的关系(核心规律): How scale size relates to area and detail (core rule): 在图幅相同的条件下: When the map size is the same: The bigger the scale → the smaller the real area → the more detailed the content The smaller the scale → the bigger the real area → the less detailed the content For example, on two pieces of paper the same size, a map of China (big area) needs a small scale and shows less detail. A map of Beijing (small area) needs a big scale and shows more detail. This rule appears in almost every exam. A common task: you are given a map of China and a map of Beijing, and asked which has the bigger scale and which is more detailed. Or you are given two maps the same size but with different scales, and asked to judge which covers a bigger area. To read direction on a map, choose the method based on the map type: Situation 1: a map with a direction marker. The arrow of the direction marker usually points north. To read it, first move the direction marker to the reference point, find north, and then find east, south, and west. This is the easiest situation to lose points in, because the marker does not always point straight up. The arrow may point in any direction. Situation 2: a map with a graticule. Lines of longitude show north-south, and lines of latitude show east-west. When judging the direction between two points on a graticule map, first use the longitude lines to find north-south, then use the latitude lines to find east-west. Note: on a graticule map centered on a pole, you also need to watch Earth's turning direction (counterclockwise at the North Pole, clockwise at the South Pole). But the Yuejiao Edition Grade 7 first semester asks less about this and mainly uses side-view graticules. Situation 3: a map with no direction marker and no graticule. Use the general rule: "up is north, down is south, left is west, right is east." To judge what direction point A is from point B, move the direction marker to point B (the reference point). Use the arrow to find north at B, draw a cross for east, south, west, and north, and then see which part A falls in. For example, if A is northwest of B, it means that starting from B and going north-west will get you to A. 四、图例与注记 Legend and Notes 图例是地图上用来表示地理事物的各种符号、线条、颜色等。 A legend is the symbols, lines, and colors on a map that stand for geographic things. Notes are the words and numbers on a map, like mountain names, river names, city names, and height numbers. You need to recognize common legend symbols: capital, city, railway, road, river, lake, mountain peak, contour line, national border, province border, and so on. This part is basic memory work. It usually appears as multiple-choice questions. It is easy, but do not ignore it completely. Contour maps are the most important skill in this section. They are also the basic tool for later topics like landforms, climate, and rivers. Height above sea level (absolute height): the vertical distance from a place on the ground up to sea level. Relative height: the vertical distance from one place on the ground up to another place. The difference is the starting point: height above sea level starts from sea level, and relative height starts from another place. Exams often give the heights of two points on a contour map and ask you to work out the relative height (subtract one from the other). Basic idea of contour lines: on a map, a line that joins points with the same height above sea level is called a contour line. Putting many contour lines onto a flat surface gives a contour map. The height difference between two next-to-each-other contour lines is called the contour interval. On the same map, the contour interval is the same. Spacing of contour lines and slope: 等高线密集 → 坡度陡 Contour lines close together → slope is steep 等高线稀疏 → 坡度缓 Contour lines far apart → slope is gentle 原因:等高线密集意味着在水平距离很短的情况下海拔变化很大,即坡度陡;稀疏则相反。 Why: close contour lines mean the height changes a lot over a short flat distance, so the slope is steep. Far-apart lines are the opposite. Peak: contour lines form a closed shape, and the numbers go down from the middle to the outside (high in the middle, low around it). Sometimes it is marked with "▲." Ridge: the bend of the contour line points out toward the low side. Memory rhyme: "bend to low means ridge." A ridge is a watershed, and water flows down both sides. Valley: the bend of the contour line points out toward the high side. Memory rhyme: "bend to high means valley." A valley is where water collects, and rivers often form there. Exams often ask "where might a river form?" The answer is a valley. Saddle: the low land between two peaks, shaped like a horse saddle. It lies between two sets of contour lines, usually where two valleys meet or between two mountain tops. Cliff: a place where many contour lines overlap. You cannot climb a cliff (unless there is special equipment). Contour map questions often ask "where is good for rock climbing" or "where might there be a waterfall." On top of contour lines, different heights are colored differently to show the shape of the land directly. Color rule: green means plains (low height), yellow/brown means plateaus and mountains (high height), blue means oceans and lakes (water), and white means snow and ice. The darker the color, the higher the land (or the deeper the water). Five basic land types on land: plain (height < 200 m, flat), hill (height 200–500 m, gentle ups and downs), mountain (height > 500 m, steep), plateau (high, large area, steep edges), basin (high around, low in the middle). You should be able to recognize the basic features of these five land types on colored layer maps and contour maps. Choose a map by purpose: for world news, choose a world political map. For China's provinces, choose a China political map. For population, choose a population map. For driving, choose a road map or an electronic navigation map. For a park visit, choose a park guide map. Features and advantages of digital maps: digital maps are maps recorded and stored in digital form, like electronic maps and remote-sensing image maps. Compared with traditional paper maps, digital maps have a scale that can change at any time, content that can be updated in time, fast information search, many ways to show things, and strong interactivity. Uses include personal travel navigation, online shopping, city management, resource surveys, and disaster monitoring. This part has appeared more in exams in recent years. It often comes as a material question and asks you to use everyday examples to explain how convenient digital maps are. This section is about methods. It is tested less than the first two sections, but you need to know the basic idea, the right situation, and the main steps for three kinds of practice. In exams, it usually appears as background knowledge in multiple-choice or short-answer questions. It is rarely tested deeply on its own. Concept: using equipment, software, and materials, following certain steps or methods, and doing geographic activities to test geographic conclusions or explore geographic phenomena, so as to learn the true features of geographic things. Features: usually done indoors. It includes making and using geographic models and learning tools, and doing demonstration and simulation experiments. Basic parts of an experiment plan: aim, equipment, steps, conclusion, and finally a review of the process and result. These four parts often appear as ordering or fill-in-the-blank questions. Trend: as information technology grows, geographic experiments can use multimedia and virtual reality (VR) to create simulated scenes. Concept: to learn the real situation of a geographic thing, using field surveys, interviews, and questionnaires to get direct geographic information, then analyzing and summarizing it to reach a conclusion or find a solution. Main area: human geography, like community population surveys, city traffic surveys, and local economic development surveys. Steps: make clear the aim, content, division of work, methods, and expected results. Make a survey plan, carry it out with questionnaires or interviews, and finally review the process and result. Use: it connects what you learn with real life and helps you form the habit of paying attention to human society. Concept: through real observation, measuring, and surveys, learning about the distribution features and causes of geographic things and phenomena in an area, and learning their basic features and why they form. Main area: the natural environment, like weather observation, astronomy observation, river trips, plant trips, and landform trips. Tool tip: when doing a field trip on landforms, you need to bring a contour map. This is a common-sense exam point. Memory comparison of the three kinds of practice: geographic experiments are indoors and focus on simulation and testing. Social surveys focus on human geography and use questionnaires and interviews. Field trips are outdoors, focus on nature, and use observation and measuring. Summary of Exam Priorities and Easy-to-Miss Points for This Unit First priority (must get full marks): reading graticule coordinates and dividing the Eastern and Western Hemispheres. This is the basic tool for the whole unit and even the whole book. Later topics like Earth's movements, climate distribution, and regional location all depend on this skill. When practicing, focus on: how the direction the numbers change matches E/W and N/S; using "small-small is east, big-big is west" well; and the coordinate writing format (latitude first, longitude second). Second priority (make sure it is correct): comparing scale size and how it relates to area and detail; reading the five parts of a contour map (especially telling ridges and valleys apart: "bend to low means ridge, bend to high means valley"); and reading direction on maps with a direction marker (using the moving method). Third priority (just understand): putting the events in the history of understanding Earth's shape in order; the three numbers for Earth's size; recognizing legend symbols; the advantages of digital maps; and the ideas and main areas of the three kinds of geographic practice. 180°。 The Eastern and Western Hemispheres are divided by 20°W and 160°E, not 0° and 180°. Lines of longitude show north-south, and lines of latitude show east-west. Do not mix them up. A scale is a fraction. The bigger the bottom number, the smaller the scale. Do not judge by whole-number size. Valley contour lines bend toward the high side, and ridge contour lines bend toward the low side. Earth's axis is an imaginary line. It does not really exist. The Northern and Southern Hemispheres are divided by the equator, and the Eastern and Western Hemispheres are divided by a longitude circle. Do not mix them up.
