How I Learn New Words — Without Burning Out

Hi, I'm Lemon. People often ask me: "How do you memorize vocabulary?"

I used to make long word lists from random apps. I forgot them in three days. Then I changed one thing — and it got much easier.

嗨,我是 Lemon。很多人问我:「你是怎么背单词的?」

我以前也从各种 App 里拉超长单词表。三天就忘光。后来我改了一个习惯——轻松很多。

My method is simple: learn words from the same people or the same theme, write them down, review them with the forgetting curvedelete a word when I'm sure I know it — and if I really want to keep it, make my own sentences.

我的方法很简单:从同一些人同一主题的内容里学习,写下来,按遗忘曲线复习,确认记住了就删掉——如果真的想记住,我会用它自己造句

Why the Same Person — or the Same Theme?

I usually listen to the same podcasts (like Mel Robbins) or read books by the same writers.

Why? Because one person often uses the same words again and again. When you stay with their voice, the same words keep coming back — in new sentences, but familiar.

我通常听固定的几档播客(比如 Mel Robbins),或读同一批作者的书。

为什么?因为同一个人会反复用同一批词。一直跟他的声音待在一起,这些词会在新句子里反复出现——场景换了,词却眼熟。

It's not only about the same person. The same theme works too.

For example: parenting, work stress, habits, money, confidence. If I stay on one theme for a while — different speakers, same world of words — I meet the same vocabulary again and again. That also helps the words stick.

不只是同一个人。同一主题也行。

比如:带娃、工作压力、习惯、金钱、自信。一段时间里围着一个主题转——说话的人可以不同,但词的「圈子」很像——这些词还是会反复出现。同样容易记住。

So my real rule is: don't jump randomly. Stay with one person or one theme long enough for words to become neighbors — not strangers.

所以我的规则是:不随机乱跳。 在一个人一个主题上待得够久,让词变成邻居——而不是陌生人。

That is much better than a random word list. In a list, every word is a stranger. In one person's world — or one theme's world — words become neighbors.

这比随机单词表好太多。单词表里,每个词都是陌生人。在同一个人的世界里——或同一个主题的世界里——词会变成邻居

This also matches my idea: use English, don't just study it. The words come from real listening and reading — not from a textbook page I will never open again.

这也贴合我的主张:用英语,而不是学英语。 词来自真实的听和读——不是来自那本再也不会翻开的教材。

My 4 Steps

Step 1: Stick with the same input.Same podcast host. Same author. Same show. Or the same theme for a while. Don't jump to a brand-new random topic every day.

第 1 步:固定输入源。固定播客主播、作者、剧集。或者一段时间里固定一个主题。不要每天跳到一个完全随机的新话题。

Step 2: Write down the new words. When I hear or see a useful word I don't know, I write it down — on my phone or in a notebook. Just the word + a short meaning or one example if I have time.

第 2 步:把生词写下来。听到或看到有用、但还不认识的词,就记下来——手机或本子都行。词 + 简短意思;有时间再加一个例句。

I don't write every unknown word. Only the ones I think I will meet again — or the ones I want to use.

我不会记下每一个生词。只记我觉得还会再遇到的——或我想用起来的。

The change I made this time: from Chinese meaning → English meaning. At first, I looked up new words in Chinese. That was fine when I was restarting.

Now, when I meet a word I don't know, I try to look up its English description first. I read the English meaning, and then I understand the word through English — not only through a Chinese translation.

This small change matters. It keeps me inside English a little longer. That is also "using" English, not just collecting Chinese labels for English words.

这次我改的一点:从中文释义 → 英英释义。一开始,生词我都用中文查。重启那阵子,这样没问题。

现在遇到不认识的词,我会尽量先看它的英文解释。通过英文释义去理解这个词——而不只靠一个中文翻译。

这个小改变特别重要。它让我在英语里多待一会儿。这也是在「用」英语,而不只是给英文词贴中文标签。

If the English definition is too hard, I still check the Chinese. No shame. I use English meaning when I can — and Chinese when I need help. 70–80% is enough.

如果英文释义太难,我还是会看中文。不会觉得丢人。能用英英就用英英——需要帮忙再用中文。七八成够就行。

Step 3: Review with the forgetting curve.I look at my list many times — not once. The brain forgets fast (that's the forgetting curve). So I come back on purpose, before the word fully disappears.

A simple review plan I follow:

  • Day 0 (the day I write it down): look once more before bed
  • Day 1
  • Day 2
  • Day 4
  • Day 7
  • Day 15
  • Day 30 (if it's still on my list)

I don't always hit every date perfectly. If I miss one, I just review the next time I can. The point is: repeat before you fully forget — not "never miss a day."

Between reviews, I also meet the same words again in that person's podcast or book. That "second meeting" in real input helps a lot — better than only staring at a list.

两次复习之间,我往往还会在同一个人的播客或书里再次碰到这些词。真实输入里的「再次见面」,比只盯着单词表有用得多。

Step 4: When I'm sure I know it — delete it.If I can understand the word when I hear it, and I can roughly use it, I remove it from my list.

The list should get shorter, not longer forever. That feeling of deleting a word — that's progress.

第 4 步:确认会了 —— 就删掉。如果听到能懂,大致也能用,我就从清单里删掉

清单应该越来越,而不是永远变长。删掉一个词的感觉——那才是进步。

One more thing: if I really want to remember a word, I make my own sentences.Understanding is not enough. When a word really matters to me, I use it in my life — work, kids, learning English — and say or write one or two simple sentences.

Then it's not just a word on a list. It's my sentence. That helps it stay.

还有一件事:如果我真的想记住一个词,我会用它造自己的句子。光懂还不够。当一个词对我真的重要,我会把它用进我的生活——工作、带娃、学英语——说或写一两句简单的话。

这样它就不是清单上的一个词,而是我自己的句子。更容易留下来。

I don't do this for every word. Only for the ones I care about. Small output. That's enough.

不是每个词都造句。只挑我在意的。一点点输出,就够了。

What I Don't Do

I don't try to memorize 50 new words a day. I don't feel guilty when the list is short. A short list I actually review beats a long list I never open.

我不追求一天背 50 个新词。清单短我也不内疚。一份我真的会复习的短清单,胜过永远打不开的长清单。

I don't learn words only for a test. I learn them so I can keep listening to Mel, keep reading, keep talking to myself in English.

我背词不是只为了考试。是为了继续听 Mel、继续读书、继续用英语自言自语。

Why This Works for Busy People

I'm a working mom. I don't have hours for vocabulary drills. But I already listen and read a little every day. Collecting words from that input costs almost no extra time.

我是职场妈妈。我没有整块时间刷单词。但我本来就在每天听一点、读一点。从这些输入里收词,几乎不额外占时间。

The forgetting curve sounds scientific. In real life it just means: look again before it's gone. That's all.

遗忘曲线听起来很科学。落到生活里就一句话:在忘掉之前,再看一眼。 就这样。
