The History of Chocolate

Today chocolate is one of the most popular sweet treats across the world. People enjoy it in bars, drinks and many desserts. But where did chocolate come from?

The earliest record of chocolate dates back to about 1900 BC. The Olmec people in Central America were the first group known to use cacao (可可) beans. They did not make sweet chocolate bars. Instead, they made a bitter drink from cacao seeds. Later, the Maya and Aztec cultures also loved this special drink. For the Aztecs, cacao beans were so valuable that they could even be used as money.

In the 16th century, Spanish explorers arrived in Central America. They tried the local cacao drink and brought cacao beans back to Spain. The Spanish added sugar and cinnamon (肉桂) to make the bitter drink taste sweeter. For nearly one hundred years, chocolate drinks were mostly enjoyed only by rich people in Spain.

Slowly the idea of chocolate spread across Europe. In the 1800s, new machines changed chocolate production. People learned to press cacao beans to separate cocoa butter. This invention made it possible to create solid chocolate bars. The first solid chocolate bar appeared in Britain in 1847.

As time went on, chocolate factories opened in many countries. More ordinary people could afford chocolate. Nowadays, different kinds of chocolate are produced and sold all over the globe.

Bees and Pollination (授粉)

Bees play an extremely important role for our nature and food supply. There are thousands of bee species around the world. Most people are familiar with honey bees, but wild bees also carry out key work for plants.

When bees fly from flower to flower to look for sweet nectar (花蜜), small grains of pollen stick to their bodies. When they move to another flower of the same kind, some pollen falls off. This process is pollination. Many fruit, vegetable and nut plants depend on bees for pollination. Without bees, these plants cannot produce fruits or seeds.

Farmers benefit a lot from bee pollination. Large‑scale fruit farms often rent bee boxes from beekeepers during growing seasons. Bees work in the fields and help fruit trees produce more harvest. Research shows that one third of human food is connected with bee pollination.

Unluckily, bee numbers have dropped in many places in recent years. Several reasons lead to this problem. Some farm chemicals hurt bees. Loss of wild flower areas leaves bees with less food. Climate change also changes the blooming time of flowers, so bees may arrive when there are no flowers available.

Scientists and ordinary people are trying to protect bees. People can plant native wild flowers in gardens. Reducing harmful pesticide (杀虫剂) use is another useful way. If we take small actions, we can give bees a better living environment.

Ancient Mail Services

❶ Long before emails and modern post offices, people needed ways to send messages over long distances. In many ancient countries, governments built special mail systems mainly for official news. Ordinary citizens seldom had chances to use these services.

❷ In ancient China during the Han Dynasty, stations were built along main roads. Runners and horse riders worked at these stations. They passed government papers from one station to the next. The stations also provided food and rest places for those message carriers.

❸ The Persian Empire created a famous royal mail system. Messengers rode fast horses. They travelled day and night and changed horses at relay stations. People at that time admired its high speed. A long journey that would take common travellers weeks could be finished in several days.

❹ There were limits for these ancient mail services. Almost all systems served rulers and governments. Private personal letters were seldom accepted. Besides, bad weather, wild animals and road damage often delayed messages. Sometimes messages could even get lost.

❺ Even with weaknesses, ancient mail systems were meaningful. They helped rulers control large lands. Ideas, laws and important news travelled quickly across big empires. They laid basic ideas for later public postal services.
