About six months ago, a young couple moved in together. The 27-year-old girlfriend only
made about £12 000 a year at her lower-paying job, so the 29-year-old man paid most of the bills.
This arrangement worked and the man didn’t mind contributing that much.
“However, four months ago, I lost my job. We have no savings. This was a devastating blow
and I still can’t get new employment,”he said.
The couple were struggling to come up with enough money to cover their rent after
missing their regular payment when they were served a 30-day eviction(驱逐) notice. The
girlfriend’s response to this was to shut herself away and her anxiety became worrying. So

within a limited time as well.
The man doesn’t have any family as he was raised in the foster care system and his girlfriend’s
family couldn’t help them because of unfortunate personal circumstances. He eventually came
across an apartment within their budget but it didn’t allow dogs. This meant that he would have to
find a home for their dog Auggie. He asked his friends to take it in but no one could adopt Auggie.
Knowing what had to be done to keep a roof over their heads, he sold Auggie to a couple with
children without his girlfriend’s knowledge or approval. He visited their house to make sure it was
a good fit. The meeting went wonderful. They have a backyard and a dog park down the street. The
family even agreed to let them visit whenever they wanted. So he traveled to their house multiple
times over the next few days to get Auggie adjusted.
“This is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. I was in as much pain as her and I was just able
to manage it better. She broke down instantly when I got home and broke the news to her, ” he
said, adding that maybe letting go is to love better.

On the weekends, Ciara Smart, a PhD candidate in history at the University of
Tasmania, is the member of a caving club that discovered the deepest known cave in
Australia.
Smart and seven fellow members of the all-volunteer Southern Tasmanian Caverneers
group have officially mapped and measured their country’s deepest known cave, which is
401 vertical meters.
It’s located in Tasmania’s Mount Field National Park, northwest of the island state’s
capital, Hobart. In the small but close-knit(志同道合的) caving community, one of the most
important rules is that whoever discovers the cave gets to name it! For the Southern
Tasmanian Caverneers, there was only one name suitable for a cave whose depth became
apparent during the worst days of the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia—Delta Variant.
英语试卷 第 4 页共11页
学科网(北京)股份有限公司“There are a lot of different words attached to the pandemic that are quite descriptive.
So we were able to go with the whole COVID-19 naming theme for the entire cave,”
Smart explained.
The entrance to the cave, which is tight and narrow, is Test Station Queue. Then
there's another horrible section called Close Contact, a sprawling (杂乱不堪的) horizontal
bit called Superspreader Event and a wide, beautiful part now called Freedom Day.
While the cave has been discovered by pure chance, these days there are many
scientific tools that cavers can use to locate their next site and collect information before
even going down into other sections. Once they narrowed it down to a spot, they used
dye(染料) to mark the location of the cave’s water source—a waterfall deep inside.
For Smart, the major appeal of caving is the wide range of activities it covers. “It’s
sort of an addictive hobby because on the one hand, it’s great fun, ”she said. “But it’s
also science because we’re putting all these sections together. We’re linking them and
understanding how the water flows through and how these sections form.”
28.What do we know about Ciara Smart?
A.Her team named Australia’s deepest known cave.
B.She discovered the world’s deepest cave.
C.Her home is in a national park in Hobart.
D.She majored in geography.
29. What can we infer about the names in paragraph5 ?
A. They are highly appreciated.
B. They reveal Smart’s hard work.
C. They comfort people.
D. They are related to the COVID-19.
30. What does Ciara Smart think of caving?
A. Easy and interesting.
B. Fun but complex.
C. Boring but meaningful.
D. Dull and risky.
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. The location of Australia’s deepest known cave.
B. The demanding requirement for caving.
C.The appeal of Australia’s deepest known cave for Ciara Smart.
D. The discovery of Australia’s deepest known cave.

The destruction of tropical forests is happening at an alarming rate to make way for
crops. After these lands are short of nutrients they’re abandoned, which can lead to the
natural regrowth of the forest that was once there. The finding suggests that so-called
recovered forests, also known as secondary forests, could play a key role in restoring
ecosystems.
英语试卷 第 5 页共11页
学科网(北京)股份有限公司To better understand this process, Lourens Poorter at Wageningen University and
Research in the Netherlands and his colleagues analyzed 77 secondary forest sites across
the tropical regions of Central and South America, and in West Africa. These sites were all
at various stages of regrowth —for example, some were 20 years old, and others were 120.
The team contrasted each secondary forest with nearby old-growth forest—forests that
haven’t
had major disturbance. The more similar the secondary forests were to their neighboring old-
growth
forests, reasoned the researchers, the more they had recovered.
The team found that after 20 years, the average secondary forest that had grown from
farmland
that was used with low to medium intensity(强度) had recovered 78% of old- growth forest
attributes(属性). “It goes way faster than we thought, ”says Poorter.
But the researchers found significant discrepancy between the recovery time for the
different forest attributes. Soils were the quickest to bounce back, with most recovery
happening within 10 years. It took 25 - 60 years for plant species diversity to recover.
Despite the enormous amount of deforestation that has and continues to occur, there’s
hope that these forests can bounce back naturally, says Poorter. Secondary forests currently
make up over 28% of tropical forests in Central and South America, and are important for
locking up carbon which is important to deal with climate change. In addition, they attract
mammals, birds and insects back to the area, which is important for ecosystem restoration.
“These results are promising,” says J. Leighton Reid at Virginia Tech. “However, the
sites in this study don’t represent regeneration on the average piece of deforested land, and
many deforested sites will recover much more slowly than the ones studied here. ”
32. Why did the researchers contrast secondary forests with nearby old-growth forests?
A. To measure the recovery of secondary forests.
B. To detect threats to secondary forests.
C. To learn more about forest attributes.
D. To determine the contributing factors of forest recovery.
33. What does the underlined word “discrepancy” mean in Paragraph 5?
A. Link. B. Dependence. C. Difference. D. Similarity.
34. What is a hopeful phenomenon according to Poorter?
A. Fewer tropical forests are being deforested.
B. Ecosystem restoration is happening in forests.
C. The survey covers a representative sample of sites.
D.A quarter of America is covered by secondary forests.
35. What did the research team find about tropical forests?
A. They went hand in hand with the ecosystem restoration.
B.They featured secondary forests that could recover themselves.
C. They could re-establish themselves quickly on abandoned land.

When the night fell, James, a middle school student in London, dragged his tired body home.
In order to save money to buy himself a new bike, he had been working at a restaurant for over a
month during his summer vacation. He had already earned some money. With one more week, he
would have his dream bike.
Entering the room, James found his younger brother Adam sitting on the edge of his bed with
an uneasy expression on his face. James stared at Adam confusedly.
“Sorry. I did something wrong, “Adam said, on the verge of tears.
“What’s the matter with you?” James asked.

学科网(北京)股份有限公司“This afternoon I went to play football on the road outside the house and accidentally hit our
neighbor Mr Black’s car. I was so scared that I hurried home in panic without telling him,” Adam
said, full of guilt.
“Is the car seriously damaged?” James couldn’t wait to continue asking.
“The tail light got broken,”Adam said in a low voice.
“It’s truly your fault. It’s really dangerous to play football on the road. What’s worse, you
shouldn’t have come back without telling Mr Black about it. You are such a naughty boy ,”James
raised his voice. Hearing this, Adam lowered his head and bit his lips hard. James added, “Anyway,
it’s never too late to mend. I’ll take you to his house tomorrow to apologize. Now it’s time to
sleep.”
When Adam went to bed, James couldn’t go to sleep himself. Father always told him to be
honest, to be a boy admired by people and to be an example of his brother. He was sorry for his
brother’s behavior. But he shouldn’t have blamed his brother after he did something wrong. He
could understand him. Anyway, Adam was only a seven-year-old boy and what had happened
really scared him. But as his elder brother, he should pay for it though this might delay his plan of
having the bike. “Nothing serious. At worst, I can take more summer jobs, ”he said to himself.
