Disney characters.

Would you BET on the future of this man? He is 53 years old. Most of his adult life has been
a losing struggle against debt and misfortune. A war injury has made his left hand stop
functioning, and he has often been in prison. Driven by heavenknowswhat motives, he determines
to write a book.
The book turns out to be one that has appealed to the world for more than 350 years. That
former prisoner was Cervantes, and the book was Don Quixote(《堂吉诃德》). And the story
poses an interesting question: why do some people discover new vitality and creativity to the end
of their days, while others go to seed long before?
We've all known people who run_out_of_steam before they reach life's halfway mark. I'm
not talking about those who fail to get to the top. We can't all get there. I'm talking about people
who have stopped learning on growing because they have adopted the fixed attitudes and opinions
that all too often come with passing years.
Most of us, in fact, progressively narrow the variety of our lives. We succeed in our field of
specialization and then become trapped in it. Nothing surprises us. We lose our sense of wonder.
But, if we are willing to learn, the opportunities are everywhere.
The things we learn in maturity seldom involve information and skills. We learn to bear with
the things we can't change. We learn to avoid selfpity. We learn that however much we try to
please, some people are never going to love us — an idea that troubles at first but is eventually
relaxing.
With high motivation and enthusiasm, we can keep on learning. Then we will know how
important it is to have meaning in our life. However, we can achieve meaning only if we have
made a commitment to something larger than our own little egos(自我), whether to loved ones, to
fellow humans, to work, or to some moral concept.
Many of us equate(视……等同于) “commitment” with such “caring” occupations as
teaching and nursing. But doing any ordinary job as well as one can is in itself an admirable
commitment. People who work toward such excellence whether they are driving a truck, or
running a store — make the world better just by being the kind of people they are. They've learned
life's most valuable lesson.
4.The passage starts with the story of Cervantes to show that ________.

C.misery inspires a man to fight against his fate
D.disability cannot stop a man's pursuit of success
5.What does the underlined part in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

B.Waste one's energy taking risks.
C.Miss the opportunity to succeed.
D.Lose the interest to continue learning.
6.What could be inferred from Paragraph 4?
A.Those who dare to try often get themselves trapped.
B.Those who tend to think back can hardly go ahead.
C.Opportunity favors those with a curious mind.
D.Opportunity waits those with a cautious mind.
7.What is the author's purpose in writing the passage?
A.To provide guidance on leading a meaningful adult life.
B.To stress the need of shouldering responsibilities at work.
C.To state the importance of generating motivation for learning.
D.To suggest a way of pursuing excellence in our lifelong career.

A new study suggests that people who drank a certain amount of alcohol had a lower risk of
cancer and death than those who drank more or none during a nineyear period. And with each
additional drink a week, the risk of cancer and death from any cause increased, the scientists
reported.
However, the study found only an association between alcohol and cancer and death, and did
not prove cause and effect, the researches said. “What sets the new study apart,” said lead
study author Andrew Kunzmann, “is that previous studies looked at cancer and death separately.
What our study does is to combine the two outcomes together and we find that lighter drinking is
associated with the lowest risk of cancer or death.”
But Kunzmann noted that the participants were all older adults. “That means that we're not
really showing what happens in younger people if they drink,” he said. “Also, it's difficult to
account for other lifestyles that could have affected the results. These could also influence health.
But the results did take differences in diet, smoking and education among participants into
consideration,” Kunzmann noted.
The researchers said that they hoped their study sparked conversation about reducing the
suggested alcohol intake in countries' guidelines. “We're not telling people what they can or can't
do or what they can or can't drink,” Kunzmann said. “We're just trying to give them reliable
evidence so that they can make their own informed, healthy decisions.”
8.What is the finding of the new study?
A.Nondrinkers are least likely to have cancer.
B.Drinking helps lower the risk of cancer.
C.Lighter drinking is helpful to health.
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂D.Heavy drinkers are at more risk.
9.Which of the following explains the underlined word “previous” in Paragraph 2?
A.Future. B.Present. C.New. D.Former.
10.What is the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A.The result is of little value. B.The research has its limitations.
C.The participants are all adults. D.The influence of diet is included.
11.What do the researchers suggest people do about drinking?
A.Make their own decisions. B.Reduce the amount they drink.
C.Have additional drinks occasionally. D.Drink according to the countries' guidelines.

One summer day as I was heading to the teaching building I heard someone call my name. I
turned around and saw Philip, a counselor (顾问) at our admissions office (招生办公室), standing
with another young man. Philip introduced me to him, Stephen, and reminded me that Stephen
would be taking one of my classes.
Stephen looked at me. With a somewhat painful expression, he asked if my class was going
to be hard and if he would be able to pass. I introduced all the things that he would be expected to
learn. As we talked, I saw Stephen's eyes getting big with fear.
I told him to do all of his assignments, and to hand them in on time. Rather than being
overwhelmed (压倒) by all of the work, I told him the most successful students made a master
calendar of all the assignments so they could plan their workload.
As the fall semester went on, I learned more of Stephen's story. It had taken him longer to
finish the assignments than most young people. Family members, including his mother, kept
reminding him that he was a failure. But he kept at it and didn't take them to heart. He told me that
before coming to our college, no one believed he could manage it.
Stephen didn't become an A student. Still, he managed to pass most of his courses by being in
class every day, turning in all of his assignments on time and breaking down his studying into bite-
sized parts. By passing course after course, he began to gain a measure of selfesteem.
On his graduation day, he walked up to me, and said, “Thank you.”
12.According to Stephen's questions to the author, we know that Stephen ________.
A.wasn't very confident about himself
B.didn't want to attend the author's class
C.had never been an A student
D.couldn't pass the author's exam
13.According to the passage, the author ________.
A.wouldn't have met Stephen without the introduction of Philip
B.told Stephen how to deal with his studies
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂C.helped Stephen get an A in his class
D.didn't believe that Stephen could study in college
14.What does the passage mainly tell us about Stephen?
A.He was an average student but hardworking.
B.He was an excellent student, but didn't have selfesteem.
C.He was a little stupid and didn't do well in school.
D.He was far from a top student because of his failure.
15.What lesson can we learn from the passage?
A.A good beginning is half done. B.One bite at a time.
C.Haste makes waste. D.Look before you leap.

更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂One evening, a workman was exhaustedly making his way home after work, when he stopped
to rest by the side of the road. A woman came by, pushing a cart full of flowers. The smell of her
blossoms so filled the air with sweetness that it seemed to take away the tiredness in his bones and
lift his spirits. He had never experienced such wonder from the many blooms of his own garden.
“How much must I pay, or what must I do, to have some of your wonderful flowers?” he asked the
woman.
“Oh, sir,” she said, “take what you wish for.”
“What return must I make for them?” he asked again.
“Your gratitude is enough,” she said, “and it’s a pleasure to share the beauty of flowers with
you.”
So the man filled his arms with blossoms and hurried joyfully home. His wife and his
children were also glad over the remarkable flowers, for they, too, discovered that the sight of
them was a delight and the smell of them refreshed the soul.
In order not to lose his valuable possession, the man planted the blossoms in a small plot of
land behind his house. Sunlight and water kept them amazingly beautiful—they still performed
their fantastic magic.
Every day, his children took delight in playing in the yard and always sang and danced
around the flowers. They all liked the lovely gift their father had received and even invited many
of their friends to share this fantastic magic together. When children came to play near the flowers,
the man over and over warned them against carelessness and wild play for fear that they walked
on the flowers and damaged them. But the flowers remained strong as long as there was enough
sun and water to nourish(滋养) them. Nowhere else could the man or his wife or children find
such remarkable relaxation from tiredness, such comfort in sadness, such spiritual nourishment as
those remarkable flowers provided.
With the news spreading and more people coming to appreciate his treasure, the man became
even more concerned about his remarkable flowers.
