Louis Pasteur was born in Dole,France on December 27,1822.His family was poor, and during
his early education Pasteur was an ordinary student who enjoyed art and singing. However, when Pasteur
was exposed to science as a teenager,he knew he found his career.
In 1848,Pasteur went to college to become a science teacher. He then became a chemistry professor
at the University of Strasbourg. He got married in 1849 and had five children. However, three died
young from typhoid fever(伤寒).It was the deaths of his children that drove Pasteur to investigate
infectious diseases in order to find a cure.
During Pasteur's time, people believed that bacteria (细菌) appeared due to "spontaneous generation"
(自然发生).They thought that the bacteria just appeared out of nowhere.Pasteur carried out experiments
to see if this was true.Through his experiments he proved that bacteria were living things that came from
other living things. They didn't just spontaneously appear. This was a major discovery in the study of
biology and earned Pasteur the title of Father of Microbiology.
As Pasteur learnt more about bacteria,he began to think they may be the cause of diseases in
humans. When the French silk market was threatened by a disease to silkworms (蚕),Pasteur decided to
investigate. He discovered that this disease was caused by bacteria.By killing them from the silkworm
farms,he was able to cease the disease and save the French silk business.

“Watson, ” said Mr Smith, “this past year your department hasn’t earned money. We’re going to
drop that department. It’s finished. I’m sorry---but you’ll have to go. ” “But, sir---if I just had a little more

“I know, sir. But he likes it so much! He’s a star trackman(田径运动员)and the best boxer in the
school. The boys call him Champ(冠军)there. ”
The Boss sat perfectly still for a long time---a faraway look in his eyes. Then, suddenly, he said,
“We’ve got to close your department, Watson. But you’ll take over a new job in another department. It

“ Snowplow (扫雪机) parenting” is the newest parenting style that can include parents booking
their adult children haircuts, calling their college kids to wake them up so that they don’t sleep through a
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂test, and even calling their kids’ employers.
“‘Helicopter (直升机)parenting’ means monitoring their kids’ every activity, which is out of date.
” Claire Cain Miller and Jonah Engel Bromwich wrote in The New York Times. “Some rich mothers and
fathers now are more like snowplows: clearing any problems in their children’s path to success so that
they don’t have to meet failure or lose opportunities. ” There is a mother who started a charity in her son’s
name to try to raise his chances of being accepted to the college. One set of parents spent years helping
their daughter avoid foods with sauce, which she didn’t like. Once she got to college, she had problems
with the food in her school because it was all covered in sauce.
A survey says that three-quarters of parents of children between the ages of 18 and 28 ask for doctor
visits or haircuts for their children, and 11% say they would call their kids’ bosses whether their children
are having an issue at work.
As reported, wealthy parents try to get their children into top colleges by giving a large amount of
money to a school, such as paying for a building. This parenting has become the most popular way to raise
children, whatever the income, education, or race is.
Julie, a teacher at Stanford, told the Times that “snowplow parenting” is not a reasonable approach.
“The parents should prepare the kid for the road, instead of preparing the road for the kid, ” she said.
1. How does Julie like “snowplow parenting”?
A. It is unreasonable.
B. It is advanced
C. It is accepted by teachers.
D. It is refused by rich people.
2. What is the character of “helicopter parenting”?
A. Parents make kids popular.
B. Parents provide little money for kids.
C. Parents ask kids to care for themselves.
D. Parents watch over kids’ every activity.
3. What should parents do according to Julie?
A. Do as wealthy parents do.
B. Make kids be prepared.
C. Make roads be prepared.
D. Do as little as possible.

A. Helicopter Parenting.
B. The Similarity in Parenting.
C. A Research on Parenting.
D. A New Kind of Parenting.

Could the device, a smartphone or a PC, which you’re using affects the moral decisions you make
when using it? To test it, researchers presented multiple dilemmas to a sample set of 1,010 people. The
participants were assigned a device at random.
One case of the questions participants were asked is the classic “trolley(有轨电车) problem”: A
runaway trolley is headed towards five people tied up on a set of train tracks. You can do nothing, resulting
in the deaths of the five people, or push a man off a bridge, which will stop the trolley. The practical
response is to kill one man to save five lives, which 33.5 percent of smartphone users chose, compared to
22.3 percent of PC users.
“What we found in our study is that when people used a smartphone to view classic moral problems,
they were more likely to make more unemotional, reasonable decisions
when presented with a highly emotional dilemma,” Dr Albert Barque-Duran, the lead author of the study,
told City, University of London. “This could be due to the increased time pressure often present with
smartphones and also the increased psychological distance which can occur when we use such devices
compared to PCs.”
As for why the researchers started this study, Dr Barque-Duran noted, “Due to the fact that our social
lives, work and even shopping take place online, it is important to think about how the contexts where we
typically face moral decisions and are asked to engage in moral behaviour have changed, and the impact
this could have on hundreds of millions of people who use such devices daily.” It’s clear that we need more
research on how our devices affect our moral decision making because we’re using screens at an ever
increasing rate.
9. Why did the author mention the “trolley problem”?
A. To introduce a difficult problem to readers.
B. To introduce the aim of carrying out the study.
C. To show an example of the questions in the study.
D. To show the difficulty in dealing with dilemmas.
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂10. How do the smartphone users of the study behave in dealing with emotional dilemmas?
A. Calmly. B. Cruelly.
C. Hesitantly. D. Enthusiastically.
11. Dr Albert believes that compared with PCs, smartphones .
A. help people bear more pressure
B. help people make decisions quickly
C. make people feel more mentally distant
D. make people stay happier to solve problems

In 1989,fresh out of high school,I had the difficult task of choosing a career path before college
started in three months. In those days in Pakistan, there were limited choices: becoming a doctor or an
engineer , or entering the financial world after getting a business degree . I wasn't interested in
engineering,so that I was left with medicine or business.I couldn't decide.
My uncle suggested that I do a work placement(实习)to experience it for a month in an
international company followed by a month in a hospital. After that,I could make a decision. It seemed
like a good idea.
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂I was accepted for a month's placement at a foreign bank in Karachi.I got a feel for how the world of
finance functioned , made new friends , and generally enjoyed the mostly easy-going work
surroundings.
The month passed rapidly, and soon I began working at a leading hospital in Karachi .The
experience couldn't have been more different. The hospital had a stressful environment. The days started
early (at 7 am,compared to 9 am at the bank),and were filled with endless duties. And the night calls!
This was crazy, working all day, through the night, and again the next day.
I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank had offered a more relaxing atmosphere,
better working hours and less stress. The hospital was full of excitement, but the studying and training
were difficult. It seemed that the business choice was going to win out.
Near the end of my month at the hospital,I was driving home after an especially busy night. In front
of me was a public bus, with college students sitting on the top.As the driver weaved through(穿梭)
traffic,I could see the boys shaking from side to side.
