Europe is home to a variety of cultural treasures. Lonely Planet, the world’s largest travel guide
publisher, has offered pairs of cities for culture-hungry but time-poor travellers.
London and Paris
It takes you about two hours to travel from London to Paris by Eurostar, a high-speed railway service.
The two capital cities have been competing in fashion, art and nightlife for decades—but each secretly
looks up to the other.
No one can doubt the grand and impressive beauty of Paris’ Louvre Museum, but if you want to save
money, you cannot skip the British Museum free to visit. Compared with London, Paris has more outdoor
attractions such as the beautiful green walkway La Promenade Plantee.
In Paris, you’ll see diners linger over red wine while in London, you can try some afternoon tea, eat
fish and chips or salted cake.
Vienna and Bratislava
Vienna, capital of Austria, and Bratislava, a city of Slovakia, are an hour apart by train. But since they
are linked by the Danube River, the best way to travel is by ship. A tour of the two cities is the perfect way
to experience everything from 17th century’s Habsburg dynasty splendour to sci-fi restaurants.
Vienna is famous for Mozart and imperial palaces. You can appreciate the perfect blending of
architecture and nature in the grand Schonbrunn Palace, and reward yourself with a cup of Vienna coffee,
which has made its way to the world’s cultural heritage list.

Some people say global English is no longer just controlled by British or American English, but is
running free and developing uniquely local forms. Can you figure out the following terms?
“I like your smile, but unlike you put your shoes on my face. ” This is a way of saying “Keep off the
grass. ” Or “people mountain, people sea”,which means “very crowded”.
These examples are what we call Chinglish. When it comes to Chinglish,if all you know is “good
good study, day day up”,you will be considered “out man”. Nowadays, more Chinglish words have
been created, for example,a Chinese idiom is translated as “smilence”,a combination by the English
word smile and silence.
Chinglish usually offers a humorous look at misuses of the English language in Chinese street signs,
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂products, and advertising. They are favoured by some English speaking tourists and visitors. Dominic
Swire has been living in Beijing for a couple of years. “I think many Chinese people complain about the
Chinglish and badly translated English. But you know, sometimes for us foreigners,it’s actually quite
charming to see them. I think if the translations of English in China were all perfect, then something
would be lost from Chinese culture. ”
However,Chinglish will probably become a “cultural relic” in the near future. Beijing has made a
comprehensive plan to improve foreign language services and correct Chinglish within five years. “It is
very ridiculous to see Chinglish on the signs in some scenic spots. And they are a kind of barrier for
communication between Chinese and people from other countries,”a Beijinger said.
Some Chinese university experts side with Chinglish. They argue that English has absorbed elements
from other languages such as French and Spanish in its growth, and now it’s Chinese’s turn.
4. What can we call Chinglish?
A. English words which get new Chinese meanings.
B. The Chinese words which are difficult to translate.
C. The words combining English vocabulary and Chinese grammar.
D. The local words preventing foreigners from learning Chinese well.
5. What does “smilence” most probably mean?
A. Saying nothing but to smile.
B. Smiling without being noticed
C. Laughing at somebody.
D. Knowing little about speech.
6. What is Swire’s attitude to Chinglish?
A. It can show the humour of Chinese.
B. It will attract more foreign tourists.
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂C. It helps him to learn Chinese well.
D. It seems part of Chinese culture.
7. Why Chinglish is likely to become a “cultural relic” in Beijing?
A. Because it has become a unique bridge between Chinese and English.
B. Because Chinglish is a chance to enrich Chinese and English.
C. Because it improves the understanding between Chinese and foreigners.
D. Because Beijing is determined to get rid of Chinglish signs.

In a recent study of 19-month-olds, University of Chicago doctoral student Lauren Howard found
that children who heard various languages in their neighborhoods were more receptive to people who spoke
languages other than their parents’ language.
“We measured imitation. At this age, that’s how they show us their willingness to learn, ”explained
Howard. The lead author of the report titled Neighborhood Linguistic Diversity Predicts Infants’ Social
Learning. The experiments tested how well the babies could learn new tasks from a non-English speaker.
The study, which included 82 children from the Chicago and Washington areas, was in the November
issue of Cognition.
“Babies are not only affected by parents and caregivers--- previous studies proved that—but also by
people they hear at the store or on the bus, ”Howard said. “Incidental exposure matters. ”
The study indicates that kids in diverse communities may grow up to have open minds. Good news for
families living in such neighborhoods--- but can other families do something to increase children’s cultural
exposure?
Cultural diversity can be within reach, even in unlikely areas. Although she grew up in not very
diverse, Julie, 23, said she picked up much knowledge about other languages and cultures from many
students, her family hosted through the AFS-USA international student exchange program.
“It’s the little differences that make you more understanding and less judgmental, ”Julie said “Yuilya

were good. Matias from Paraguay wasn’t used to being on time because his culture is more laid-back. ”
For families unable to host a student for a whole year, AFS-USA offers other volunteer opportunities,
such as being “welcome families”to ease students’ transitions(过渡).
But there are countless ways to expose kids to other countries, said Lucas, author of “Growing Up
Global: Raising Children to Be at Home in the World. ”
Just a few of her tips: Take the kids to foreign films. Try exotic restaurants. Put a world map on the
wall. Help your children’s teachers make global classrooms. Encourage the kids to invite friends of other
cultures for dinner. “They’ll thank you later, ”Lucas said.
8. What does Howard stress by saying “Incidental exposure matters”?
A. Babies are also influenced by people outside their home.
B. Parents fail to realize the importance of incidental learning.
C. Parents and caregivers have more influence on babies.
D. Babies learn little knowledge at the store or on the bus.
9. How was Julie exposed to different cultures?
A. She frequently volunteered in some welcome families.
B. She lived in neighborhoods with various language learning.
C. She was a member of the AFS-USA program.
D. She learned from the foreign students living in her home.
10. Which might be Julie’s attitude to Matias’s lateness?
A. Curious. B. Happy. C. Tolerant. D. Anger.
11 What are Lucas’s tips mainly about?
A. How to improve children’s behavior.

C. How to better communicate with children.
D. How to help children seek diversity.

Why do Americans struggle with watching their weight, while the French, who consume rich food,
continue to stay thin? Now a research by Cornell University suggests how life style and decisions about
eating may affect weight. Researchers concluded that the French tend to stop eating when they feel full.
However, Americans tend to stop when their plate is empty or their favorite TV show is over.
According to Dr. Joseph Mercola, a health expert, the French see eating as an important part of their
life style. They enjoy food and therefore spend a fairly long time at the table, while Americans see eating
as something to be squeezed(挤出) between the other daily activities. Mercola believes Americans lose the
ability to sense when they are actually full. So they keep eating long after the French would have stopped.
In addition, he points out that Americans drive to huge supermarkets to buy canned and frozen foods for
the week. The French, instead, tend to shop daily, walking to small shops and farmers’ markets where
they have a choice of fresh fruits, vegetables, and eggs as well as high-quality meats for each meal.
After a visit to the United States, Mireille Guiliano, author of French Women Don’t Get Fat,
decided to write about the importance of knowing when to stop rather than suggesting how to avoid food.
Today she continues to stay slim and rarely goes to the gym.
In spite of all these differences, evidence shows that recent life style changes may be affecting French
eating habits. Today the rate of obesity — or extreme overweight — among adults is only 6%. However,
as American fast food gains acceptance and the young reject older traditions, the obesity rate among
French children has reached 17% — and is growing.
12. In what way are the French different from Americans according to Dr. Joseph Mercola?
A. They go shopping at supermarkets more frequently.
B. They squeeze eating between the other daily activities.
C. They regard eating as a key part of their lifestyles.
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂D. They usually eat too much canned and frozen food.
13. This text is mainly the relationship between ______.
A. Americans and the French
B. life style and obesity
C. children and adults
D. fast food and overweight
14. The text is mainly developed ______.
A. by contrast(对比) B. by space C. by process D. by classification(分类)
15. Where does this text probably come from?
A. A TV interview. B. A food advertisement.

For many years,I had a recurring (重复出现的) dream.I was a little girl again, rushing about, trying to
get ready for school.
“Hurry, you’ll be late for school,” my mother called to me.
“I am hurrying,Mom! What did I do with my books?”
Deep inside I knew where the dream came from.It was about some unfinished business in my life.As a
kid,I loved everything about school.I loved books, teachers, tests and homework. Most of all I longed to
someday march down the aisle (通道) to receive my diploma. That seemed more appealing even than
getting married.
But at 15,I had to drop out because my parents couldn’t afford tuition (学费).My hope of getting a
diploma was dead,or so I thought.Pretty soon,I married and had three children,and I thought:“There goes
my diploma.”
Even so,I wanted my children to be educated. But Linda, our youngest child, had juvenile arthritis (幼年
型关节炎) in her hands and knees, which made it impossible for her to function in a normal classroom.I felt
really sorry for her and I didn’t want her to live her life with regret.I didn’t give up hope of her being back
to school in some way.
One day,I saw an ad in the newspaper for evening courses.“That’s the answer,” I said to myself.Linda
always feels better in the evening,so I’ll just sign her up for night school.
Linda was busy filling out enrollment (入学) forms when the secretary said,“Mrs Schantz, why don’t
you come back to school?”
I laughed,“There’s no way! I’m 55!” But he persisted,and before I knew what I had done,I was
enrolled for classes in English and crafts.“This is only an experiment,” I warned him,but he just smiled. So,I
told myself to try for just a semester and to see if it would work.Anyway,my dream was still there in my
heart.
