Teenage life around the world
Asha
I’m from Tanzania. Like most teenagers, I start my day early and end it late. After school, I study at a
night school to prepare for the university entrance exam. When I have time off, I prefer to be outdoors. I love
nature and animals. I’m quite upset about how we treat the environment, so I do my best to help. I volunteer
to plant trees and I’m a member of our school’s Nature Club.

worry a lot about the future. Oh, and I’m a gaming nerd. I love the Internet games so much.
Joe
I’m a student from London. The online world is a big part of my life. I’ve been using the computer since
I was a kid. I do various things online. Besides doing all my schoolwork, I chat with friends, play computer
games, watch films, read the daily news and shop online. My parents are worried. They keep telling me to
drag myself away from the online world.

25. What is the main idea of the passage?

Beach volleyball(沙滩排球) is one of those sports that can be an exciting game to play and watch. It's
really easy, and all you need is sand, a net and a group of people, of any age or fitness level, who want to
have fun.
Beach volleyball can be played with as few as two people in each team, making a total of four people.
However, if you are less skilled and experienced in the game, it will be easier to play with a larger team. The
more players you have, the less ground each person will be responsible for covering and the more time they
will have to recover between shots. If you only have a few players, each of you will get a lot of running for
the ball after each volley(截球). If you are looking for a relaxing, fun, low-key experience, choose larger
teams.
Beach volleyball is similar to regular volleyball in its rules. However, even experienced volleyball players
do not realize how much more difficult it is to run and jump on sand. Since it is harder to move quickly onsand than a hard surface, play will be much slower than regular volleyball on a court. When an athlete trains
for beach volleyball, he will focus on building lower body strength as well as upper body strength. Strengthening
his legs is extremely important. This improves the player's ability to move quickly and accurately on sand
despite the resistance. The ability to jump high and land without injury is necessary for beach volleyball
players.
Whether you are in it for the competition, or just to have a great time with your friends, beach volleyball
can be extremely exciting and fun. You may start out with friends and may soon fall in love with the sport.
26. When you join a large beach volleyball team, you’ll _________.
A. have as many shots as possible B. improve your volleyball skills
C. be responsible for more ground D. feel light-hearted while playing
27. What can be inferred from Paragraph 3?
A. Experienced volleyball players know clearly it is hard to run and jump on sand.
B. Lower body strength is more important than upper body strength.
C. A person must have strong legs if he wants to run and jump quickly on sand.
D. The rules of beach volleyball are the same as those of regular volleyball.
28. Why is playing beach volleyball much slower than playing regular volleyball?
A. Because it is not easy to move on sand.
B. Because beach volleyball has a larger court.
C. Because the teams of beach volleyball are larger.
D. Because it is a workout running for the ball.
29. What does the author think of beach volleyball?
A. It's a difficult sport.
B. It's an exciting and interesting sport.
C. It's a sport which only a few people love.
D. It's a sport which needs few skills.
30. The passage mainly tells us ______ .
A. the game of beach volleyball
B. how to play beach volleyball well
C. how to become a good beach volleyball player
D. why beach volleyball is one of the exciting sports
CIt’s common to hear that being “emotional” is opposite from being “rational (理性的)”. For many people,
there is no place for emotion in rational thinking. However, some recent work from our lab suggests something
opposite.
We found that individuals who score higher on tests of intelligence and rationality don’t ignore(忽略)
emotions. Instead, they pay more attention to emotions and are better at recognizing and understanding
emotions. This is because most intelligent decision-making requires emotional information. Emotions tell us
what we want, and we can’t make smart decisions without first knowing what our goals are.
For example, as a mother, if I want to make my children happy, and I know they like video games, it
would make sense for me to buy them a video game. But, if I instead want them to stay focused on homework,
then it wouldn’t make sense for me to buy them the video game. You can see from this example that a rational
decision can’t be made unless I know various pieces of emotional information.
Anticipating others’ emotions may help us be more effective leaders -- allowing us to predict the way
people will respond to what we say or do. Anticipating our own emotions can also make for much more
effective long-term decisions. For example, if I predict I will feel anxious before giving a public speech, I
might be inspired to practice a few more times. If I instead simply ignored my anxiety, chances are that I’d be
more disturbed on stage, and my speech wouldn’t go smoothly.
Of course, it’s important to find out situations where emotional influences may not be helpful as well.
Here, individuals who score higher on rationality tests may be better at reflecting on whether an emotion will
be helpful or not in a given situation. They can then make their decision after giving it deeper consideration.
For example, expressing too much anger or sadness to your boss when you don’t get an promotion(晋升) may
not be in your best interest.
In general, if we want to be rational and make the best decisions, we should desire as much information
as we can get -- and information about emotions can often be especially useful.
31. What is a widespread opinion about emotions and rationality?
A. Rationality can develop emotional intelligence.
B. Emotions help to make rational decisions.
C. They play opposite roles in thinking processes.
D. Rationality is more important than emotions in decision-making.32. Why does the author mention the example in Paragraph 3?
A. To show the process of decision-making.
B. To tell us the harm of ignoring emotions.
C. To draw the line between rationality and emotions.
D. To show the importance of emotional information.
33. What should be done to make the best of emotions according to Paragraph 5?
A. Recognizing their usefulness.
B. Reflecting on the possible effect.
C. Completing the rationality tests.
D. Thinking about various situations.
34. What does the author suggest for making wise decisions?
A. gaining enough information.
B. Putting rationality at the first place.
C. Trusting direct feelings.
D. Seeking expert advice.
35.What is the best title for this passage?
A. How to Control Emotions for Better Decision-Making
B. The Role of Emotions in Effective Leadership
C. Why Ignoring Emotions Leads to Smarter Decisions
D. Balancing Emotional and Rational Thinking in Decision-Making

W: Couldn’t we just send the brochures back to the printing company and get them to do the work?
M: Normally I would, but we just don’t have enough time. The conference is in two days.

M: Susie, we’re planning to throw a party for Sally in Sales this Friday, which is her last day in our company.
Would you like to join us?
W: I’d love to, but I can’t. My cousin will come to see me this Friday. I promised her that I’d take her to a new
French restaurant that just opened up last Thursday.
M: Why don’t you come by to say goodbye when you finish eating? The party won’t finish until midnight. It
will be held at JJ’s, just across from Oscar Cinema.

W: Hi, I’m here to pick up running shoes for myself. I’m planning to start to work out next Monday. I need
something light and comfortable.
M: Okay. This model is popular with young women. Why don’t you try them on?
W: They look great to me but I don’t like these colors. Do they come in other colors?
M: Yes, but these are the only ones we have in stock right now. If you don’t mind waiting for a couple of
days, we’d be delighted to place a special order for you. Let me give you our list for your reference.

M: What subjects did you take?
W: Physics, chemistry, math and biology.
M: Do you think you’ve passed?
W: I’m sure I’ve passed, but I’m worried about what grades I’ll get. I want to study medicine at Cambridge
University, and they won’t give me a place unless I get three As and a B.M: Do you think you’ll get them?
W: I don’t know. I think I did OK, but I’m a bit worried about math.
M: When will you get your results?
W: Tomorrow. I’m really nervous.
M: And what will you do if you don’t get the grades you need?
W: I don’t want to think about it. If I don’t get into Cambridge, I suppose I’ll do another year at school and
take the exams again.
M: Well, good luck!

W: Hello. This is Margaret from Atlantis International. Is this a good time to speak?
M: Yes. How can I help you?
W: I’d like to say that Mr. Chan was impressed with your skills and qualifications. We think you’re exactly
what we’re looking for and would like to offer you the position of Director of Operations.
M: That’s very good news. I have been following Atlantis International for a couple of years now, waiting for
the right position to become available.
W: That’s very good to hear. What I’m going to do now is send you an offer letter. You’ll also be contacted by
a company called Watchdog Security. They run all our background checks. How much notice do you need
to give?
M: As I told Mr. Chan last week, I have to give three weeks’ notice. That means I’ll be ready to start by the
end of the month.
W: That’s fine. I’m going to post your job offer letter now, and welcome to Atlantis International.

M: Thank you for your attention. I hope you’re all looking forward to arriving at the town. I thought you might
like to know a few things while we’re still on the coach — and it’ll help to pass the time on our journey!
OK, as you know, we’re staying at the Park Hotel. We’re booked in for three nights. Now, I’m aware that
not everyone wants breakfast there, so if you do want it, you should tell the Hotel that you do the night
before. We’re making our own arrangements for dinner each evening. And then I hope you’re going to
enjoy the various activities that are lined up. However, there have been some changes since the original
program. For one, because it’s been under repair and is therefore closed to the public, we won’t be going
to the castle.
However, there’s plenty else to see, and the gardens are still open. Something we’ve been able to add to
the program is for Saturday, when a local historian will give us a lecture on famous people from the town.
To free up the time for that, we’ve changed the trip to the art gallery that was due for then on to Sunday.Well, we’re just coming into the town now, so ...
