At the age of fifteen, Erin Willman lost her sight, but instead of letting this challenge control her life, she was
determined to show what she could do. Even though many companies turned her down because of her blindness,
Erin didn’t give up. Instead of waiting for someone to give her a chance, she decided to make her own path. Within
a year, she started White Cane Coffee and became its CEO, proving that her disability wouldn’t stop her from
reaching her dreams.
White Cane Coffee started as an idea on a difficult day and has now grown into a successful business, with
Erin’s coffee now available in many cities. Beyond selling high-quality coffee, the company helps blind and

showing that every worker is valuable. The profits from White Cane Coffee do more than support the employees;
they also help fund guide dog training, community programs for children, and other charities.
Erin’s goals go far beyond her own success; she wants to create positive change worldwide. She values social
good more than material riches and aims to use her position to improve the lives of others like her. Erin and her
team are grateful for the strong support from their community and disability supporters. Above all, they are proud

Insects, often overlooked or seen as pests (害虫), are vital to the health and balance of our ecosystems. With
over one million known species, insects perform a range of functions that are crucial for the survival of many plants
and animals. They are found in almost every environment on Earth, from forests and gardens to urban areas.
One of the most important roles that insects play is as pollinators (传粉者). Bees butterflies, and other insects
transfer flower dust between flowers, helping plants reproduce. This process is essential for the production of fruits,
vegetables, and other crops that humans depend on. It's estimated that 75% of the world's crops rely on pollinators,
making insects vital for global food production.
In addition to pollinators insects are also crucial as decomposers. They break down dead plants and animals,
returning important nutrients (养分) to the soil. Manure beetles, for instance, bury animal waste, which helps
reduce greenhouse gas emissions (排放) and improve soil health. Without decomposers, nutrients would not be
recycled, and plant life would struggle to grow.
Insects also contribute to pest control. Many insects, such as ladybirds and ground insects, hunt other insects
that damage plants. By keeping insect populations in check, they reduce the need for chemical insecticides, whichcan harm the environment and human health. In this way, insects support sustainable agriculture by naturally
controlling harmful insects.
Furthermore, insects are an important food source for many animals, including birds and bats. They are an
essential part of the food web, helping to sustain biodiversity. Insects also serve as indicators of environmental
health; changes in their populations can signal broader environmental issues, such as climate change or habitat loss.
Protecting insect populations is essential to maintaining the health and stability of ecosystems. Insects
contribute to pollination, breakdown, insect control, and food webs, making them crucial to the natural world and
human life. By preserving insects, we can help ensure that ecosystems remain balanced and sustainable for
generations to come.
8. What is the key role of insects discussed in paragraph 2?
A. Helping plants reproduce. B. Being used as pets.
C. Cleaning the environment. D. Providing entertainment.
9. How do insects help control pests in agriculture?
A. By making crops grow faster. B. By speeding up plant growth.
C. By removing pests from crops. D. By feeding on harmful insects.
10. What is the author's attitude towards insects?
A. Tolerant. B. Supportive. C. Responsible. D. Critical.
11. Which title best suits the passage?

In the field of higher education, where fairness and objectivity are considered essential, it’s easy to assume that
factors such as the order of students’ surnames have no bearing on their academic performance. However, recent
studies suggest that this assumption may not be entirely correct.
Research from the University of Michigan, which examined over 30 million grading records, uncovered an
unexpected pattern: students with surnames that appear earlier in the alphabet generally receive higher grades than
those with surnames placed later. This effect is particularly noticeable in large courses or classes where assignments
are submitted electronically through platforms like Canvas, which automatically lists students in alphabetical order.
Consequently, students whose surnames fall toward the end of the alphabet, such as those beginning with Y or Z,
are more likely to receive lower grades than those whose names come earlier. This bias (偏见) is explained by a phenomenon known as “sequential grading bias”. It occurs when students
are unintentionally advanced or disadvantaged based on the order in which their work is assessed. For example,
applicants in a job interview who are interviewed later in the day may be rated more severely than those who are
interviewed first. In academic settings, instructors often begin grading with the first papers in the list, which tend to
be from students with surnames starting with letters like A or B. This gives those students a small advantage, as
their work may be graded more favorably. However, when exams are graded in the opposite order, this prejudice
can change, and the later submissions may receive better evaluations.
To address this issue, educators and policymakers are urged to consider alternative grading methods that
minimize the influence of alphabetical order. Ideas include randomizing the order in which papers are graded, using
anonymous (匿名的) submissions, or encouraging more comprehensive evaluation practices that reduce the impact
of initial impressions. By addressing these biases, educational institutions can create a fairer and welcoming
environment where students’ academic achievements are judged only on their performance rather than their
surnames’ position in the alphabet.
12. Why does the author mention Canvas in the study?
A. To suggest Canvas could reduce grading biases.
B. To explain how Canvas randomly assigns students.
C. To show how Canvas’s alphabetical order affects grading.
D. To interpret Canvas is the most effective in grading platforms.
13. What does “sequential grading bias” refer to?
A. A grading system based on students’ performance.
B. The effect of the order in grading students’ work.
C. An intentional effort to grade papers in a certain order.
D. The preference for grading early submissions more seriously.
14. How might the issue of alphabetical bias be addressed?
A. By removing digital submission platforms like Canvas.
B. By grading papers based on students' performance in class.
C. By grading in random order or using anonymous submissions.
D. By ensuring that only top-performing students are graded first.
15. What is the purpose in writing the article?
A. To suggest larger courses. B. To explain grading systems.
C. To recommend using Canvas. D. To discuss grading bias and solutions.【答案】12. C 13. B 14. C 15. D

The night had grown late, and Tommy was still up, working hard. He was determined to improve his grades
and score higher than before. A wave of tiredness hit him, but he pushed through, grabbing another cup of coffee.
The energy boost helped him stay focused, and he continued studying till late night, knowing that his devotion to
study would bring him good results.
Something unexpected happened. When the test papers were returned the next morning, Tommy couldn’t
believe his eyes — he was the only one who had received a D. This unexpected grade hit him harder than he
expected. As his classmates celebrated their success, their laughter and chatter only deepened his sense of failure.
The image of the D in his hands brought up painful thoughts of how his parents viewed his academic performance.
The weight of this truth pressed down on him. As he stared at the glaring D on his paper, a sense of urgency filled
him. He realized something had to change. He couldn’t keep going like this.Fueled by a desire for change Tommy threw himself into his studies with a fresh sense of purpose. He
participated more in class, actively raising his hand and engaging in discussions. His assignments reflected his hard
work, and gradually, the results of his effort started to show. Laura, his teacher, noticing the improvement, praised
him before the class. His classmates, offering him kind words and smiles, helped to rebuild his confidence.
Everyone noticed a big change in Tommy, except his busy parents.
A month later, Tommy walked into the exam hall with his head held high. This time, he felt ready, knowing he
had prepared thoroughly. He settled the questions with a calm hand and was confident that his preparation would
pay off. As the bell rang, signaling the end of the exam, Tommy felt a sense of success. He was certain he had given
it his best.
When the results came two days later, Tommy’s heart raced as he saw his impressive grade — B⁺. After the
school day ended, Tommy quickly left, wanting to show his parents his hard-earned B⁺.

“Mom, Dad, I have great news!” Tommy said, eager to prove himself. His parents looked up from their work,
surprised by his enthusiasm. Tommy handed them his test paper with the B+ grade, his hands trembling slightly.
“See? I really did it!” His mom raised an eyebrow, while his dad simply nodded, his face unreadable. The lack ofexcitement made Tommy’s heart sink. “Mom, Dad. I promise this isn’t a cheat,” he added, trying to convince them.
Feeling his parents’ doubt weighing on him, Tommy quickly grabbed his phone.
