M: There are studies showing that sleeping is not simply a matter of giving the body a rest. The
bodyisself-repairingandself-recoveringtoadegreenomatterapersonissleepingornot. ⑱ In
fact,abasicamountofmovementoccursduringsleepinordertomakemuscleactive.There
arealsotwootherresearchesaboutthis.First,aresearchshowsthatwhilethereisachangeinthe
brain during sleep, there is no evidence that the total amount of activities of the brain is any less.
The second factor is more interesting. Some years ago an experiment dealing with the recording
of eye-movements during sleep showed that the average human's sleep cycle is with
eye-movements, some slow, others rapid. ⑲ People woken during the periods of
eye-movements generally reported that they had been dreaming. When woken at other times
they reported no dreams. ⑳If one group of people were disturbed from their eye-movement
sleep for several nights on end, and another group were disturbed for an equal period of
time but when they were no eye-movements, the first group began to show some abnormal
behaviorswhiletheothersseemedunaffected. Allthissuggeststhatit
wasnotthedisturbanceofsleepthatmattered,butthedisturbanceofdreaming.
