In the peaceful countryside of Kadaba in Karnataka’s Mangaluru, India, among large green fields, lies a farm
painted in the lively colors of foreign fruits. The red and green rambutans (红毛丹), accompanied by the dark
purple mangosteens (山竹), often attract the attention of people passing by. Together, they generate a handsome
income for 42-year-old Lohith Shetty.Born into a farming family, Lohith saw his father and uncles slave away in their 21-acre farm, growing local
produce. Despite having bigger ambitions as a child, poverty led him to drop out of school after Grade 10, pressuring
him to focus on finding ways out.
After having tried his hand at different businesses, Lohith was still struggling to make ends meet for his family.
However, Lohith’s journey to becoming a millionaire would begin when he got a work reference from a friend to
work on a farm in Dharmasthala.
Over the next decade, Lohith’s job at the farm gave him access to the know-how of cultivating foreign fruits like
rambutan, dragon fruit, and mangosteen. This became his front-row ticket to understanding advanced agricultural
practices and novel methods to make farming a profitable business.
After returning home in 2016 with his newfound knowledge, Lohith decided to transform his experience into a
financial adventure. He began by renting 20 acres of land and the 21 acres his family already owned. The next step
was to purchase plants, which he did from a nursery (苗圃) in Kerala. And the next eight years witnessed Lohith
draw on his advantage of being one of the first growers of foreign fruits in his region to promote his business
steadily.
Today, his adventure earns nearly $1.2 million annually for him. Moreover, apart from caring for his own farm
and nursery, Lohith also helps people interested in growing such crops.” We grow the plants, maintain them for three
years, and once they start giving a good yield, the owners take over,” he says.

Sometimes to go forward you must look backwards. Wind-powered ships have been used since ancient times,
ever since the invention of the sail. With the coming of fuel-powered ships, however, the sail fell out of favor as a
practical way to move large boats and ships across the ocean. Now, sails are making a comeback as a way to lower
the carbon emissions produced by the fuel-powered shipping industry.
Shipping is not an environmentally friendly industry. In fact, the industry is responsible for about three percent
of global emissions. Luckily, the leading figures in the industry have made a commitment to become planet-warming
gasses net zero by 2050.This is where the Pyxis Ocean comes in.
The Pyxis Ocean is a ship with two “Wind Wings”, which was designed by a British company. The ship made
its first journey crossing the ocean from China to Brazil in 2023.But the “Wind Wings” are not quite sails. Standing up to 37 meters tall, they are designed using the same type
of aerodynamic (空气动力学的) principles that make it possible for an aircraft to fly. When not being used, the
sails fold down onto the ship’s deck. It is estimated that the wings will save around 3 tons of fuel a day. That is a lot
of fuel.
With new, cleaner fuels still in the works, these partial measures to reduce carbon emissions are a godsend.”
Ultimately we do need zero-carbon fuels on all ships, but in the meantime, it is necessary to make every journey as
efficient as possible,” Dr Simon Bullock, a shipping researcher, said.
Luckily, wind-powered technology is gaining recognition. About 100 out of every 110,000 new-build ships are
being built using some sort of wind technology. And that doesn’t take into account ships like the Pyxis Ocean which
have been, or will be transformed with sails, kites, or other types of wind-powered mechanisms.
28.What does the comeback of the wind-powered technology indicate?
A.The whole world is faced with an energy crisis.
B.Sustainable development has become a global trend.
C.The solutions to modern problems may lie in the past.
D.The shipping industry is determined to turn away from fossil fuels.
29.What is the main purpose of the “Wind Wings” on the Pyxis Ocean?
A.To provide entertainment for the crew. B.To reduce the ship’s carbon emissions.
C.To serve as a backup power source. D.To increase the speed of the ship.
30.What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A.The wind-powered technology is reliable and promising.
B.Wind power is playing a major role in the shipping industry.
C.Fuel-powered ships will soon be replaced by wind-powered ones.
D.Technology innovation is key to addressing environmental issues.
31.What can be the best title for the text?
A.New Ship Sailing into the Future
B.Traditional Shipping Taking the Stage
C.The Pyxis Ocean: New Hope for the Earth
D.“Wind Wings”: a Return to Ancient Maritime Wisdom

Researchers have found evidence that artificial intelligence models would rather lie than admit the shame of not
knowing something.
A new study published in Nature found that the bigger LLMs (大型语言模型) get, the less reliable they
become for specific tasks. They tend to reply with confidence even if the answer is not factually correct, because they
are trained to believe it is.” LLMs are going far beyond their knowledge base to provide responses,” the study
noted.
Researchers found that this phenomenon is not because bigger LLMs are not capable of handling simple tasks,
but instead they are trained to be more skilled at complex tasks. It’s like a person who’s used to eating only fancy
meals suddenly struggling to make a home barbecue or a traditional cake. AI models trained on vast, complex datasets
are more likely to miss fundamental skills. The issue is worsened by the models’ apparent confidence. Users often find it challenging to tell when AI is
providing accurate information and when it’s confidently giving misinformation. This overconfidence can lead to
dangerous overreliance on AI outputs, particularly in critical fields like healthcare or legal advice.
According to the study, techniques like reinforcement learning with human feedback (RLHF), intended to shape
AI behavior, may actually be adding to the problem. These approaches appear to be reducing the models’ tendency
to avoid tasks they’re not equipped to handle—remember the infamous “as an AI Language Model, I cannot”? —
unintentionally encouraging more frequent errors.
Human oversight, long considered a safeguard against AI mistakes, may not be sufficient to address these issues.
The study found that users often struggle to correct incorrect model outputs, even in relatively simple fields, so relying
on human judgment may not be the ultimate solution for proper model training.
The study’s findings call into question the current tendency of AI development. While the push for larger, more
capable models continues, this research suggests that bigger isn’t always better when it comes to AI reliability.
32.How may LLMs react when not knowing something?
A.They admit their ignorance.
B.They refuse to give answers.
C.They turn to experts for assistance.
D.They reply confidently but offer false answers.
33.What has led to AI telling lies according to the study?
A.Mistakes in data analysis. B.Inability to handle specific tasks.
C.Unawareness of its own ignorance. D.Lack of proper human monitoring.
34.What is the function of the example mentioned in paragraph 3?
A.To prove LLMs are similar to humans.
B.To show the limitations of AI training methods.
C.To demonstrate LLMs are poor at simple tasks.
D.To imply LLMs should be applied to complex tasks.
35.What’s the author’s attitude towards where AI is heading?
A.Skeptical. B.Optimistic. C.Objective. D.Indifferent.

I was nine and had been spending part of my winter holidays with my grandparents in Dehra. Now it was time
to go back to my parents in Delhi before joining school again. Granny asked my uncle Ken, her thirty-year-oldunmarried son, to take me to the station and put me on the train to Delhi.
Uncle Ken carried out the instruction, and even bought me chocolate, consuming most of it himself while telling
me how to prepare for my exams effectively. The train pulled out of the station, and we waved goodbye to each
other.
An hour later, I discovered to my horror that I wasn’t on the train to Delhi but on the train to Lucknow, over 300
miles in the opposite direction. One passenger suggested I get off at the next station; another said it wouldn’t be safe
for a little boy at night. “Wait till we get to Lucknow,” advised a third passenger. “Then give your grandparents a
call.”
The next morning, the train steamed into Lucknow. One passenger kindly took me to the stationmaster’s office.
After knowing my problem, the stationmaster, Mr Ghosh, said, “Yes, we must call your grandparents. And I’ll take
you to my home.”
Mr Ghosh’s house was just behind the station. He offered me milky tea and said, “Now let me show you my
family.” He led me to his backyard. There I was amazed to find a small toy railway with a station, a railway office,
etc. Nearby was a small amusement park, with swings and carousels (旋转木马). Many white mice were playing
there, running in and out of tunnels, climbing onto a toy train.
Mr Ghosh pressed a button, and the little train, crowded with white mice, left the station and went shouting off
to the backyard’s corner. “That’s my hobby for many years. What do you think of it?” Mr Ghosh said, while
feeding them with biscuits. I replied that the mice and the train were lovely.
“Great,” he smiled. Then, he went to his office to call my grandfather.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Soon, he returned, saying my grandfather would arrive that evening.
As the train began moving, Mr Ghosh gave me a box, saying, “A present for you!”

M: Hello. International Friends Club. Can I help you?
W: Oh, hello. I read about your club in the paper today and I thought I’d phone to find out a bit more.M: Yes, certainly. Well, we are a sort of social club for people from different countries. It’s quite a new club—we
have about 50 members at the moment, but we are growing all the time.
W: That sounds interesting. I’m British actually, and I came to Washington about three months ago. I’m looking for
ways to meet people. Er, what kinds of events do you organize?
M: Well, we have social get-togethers, and sports events, and we also have language evenings.
W: Could you tell me something about the language evenings?
M: Yes. Every day except Thursday we have a language evening. People can come and practice their languages—
you know, over a drink or something. We have different languages on different evenings. Monday—Spanish;
Tuesday—Italian; Wednesday—German; and Friday—French. On Thursday we usually have a meal in a restaurant
for anyone who wants to come.
W: Well, that sounds great. I really need to practice my French.
M: OK. Well, if you can just give me your name and address, I’ll send you the form and some more information. If
you join now, you can have the first month free.

to your ears without the need for wearing any special devices.
W: That sounds incredible! How does it work?
M: A company has developed a system that can transmit audio signals within a certain range, so as long as you’re
within that range, you can hear the sound without anyone else being able to hear it. It’s truly remarkable!
W: Wow, that would be perfect for long car rides. Imagine driving and enjoying your favorite music while the kids
sleep peacefully in the back seats.
M: Exactly! This technology would not only allow you to listen to music without disturbing others, but it also promises
to make the listening experience more comfortable for your ears.

M: Phew! Finally, the term is over!
W: Yeah, it has been a tough term. Three new subjects! I never thought I could smoothly make it through this term.
Chemistry has been particularly challenging for me.
M: Yeah, I’ve struggled with it too. But we have overcome all the difficulties now. I’m looking forward to resting
during the summer break.
W: Me too. Any plans for the summer? I’m heading to the beach for over a week.
M: Really? I’m also going to the beach for two weeks. My dad have a two-week vacation and the whole family is
going together.
W: I’m going with my friends. When are you going?
M: My dad said he would be free next week. How about you?
W: We’re leaving tomorrow. We can’t wait to get there. There are so many exciting things to do.
M: Yeah, sounds amazing. Good luck with your trip.
W: Thanks! You too.

W: When my husband and I entered the cinema, I noticed that it was dark and challenging to find our seats. I
observed that an elderly man who arrived before us was fortunate as he had a cane to assist him, similar to a blind
person. I said to my husband that it was unusual for there to be no lights before the film started. My husband replied
that there was also no music. And we wondered if it was an attempt to save money. We were seated in one of the rows
near the entrance and could hear others passing by, but it was difficult to determine the number of audience members. It
was evident that the cinema wasn’t very crowded at that time of day. Gradually, my husband grew impatient, saying
that it must be already two o’clock in the afternoon. I tried to see the time on my watch in the darkness and could
barely make out that it was slightly past two. At that moment, the film began, but to our disappointment, there was a
change. The second film, which we weren’t interested in, was being shown first.第二节到此结束。

can be played anywhere, from a school gym to a community center, making it a perfect fit for my active lifestyle.
Besides, watching the world’s best players engage in fierce contest is not just thrilling but also inspiring.

参考范文:
Soon, he returned, saying my grandfather would arrive that evening. In relief, I began helping feed the mice,
and then watched Mr Ghosh operate the toy train. All mice were playing happily. By the time Grandfather arrived, I
had consumed many treats offered by Mr Ghosh and fallen asleep in his room. I woke up to find Mr Ghosh busily
showing Grandfather his little railway and group of mice. When Grandfather and I boarded the train returning, Mr
Ghosh came to the window to say goodbye.
As the train began moving, Mr Ghosh gave me a box, saying, “A present for you!” After the train moved off, I
opened the box, finding two white mice. I was glad and cheerful. Back in Dehra, Uncle Ken was embarrassed to face
me. Granny had given him a lecture on how to be responsible, but I still wanted “revenge”! I secretly released the
mice under his bed sheet. Later, he rushed out of his room, screaming that something soft was running inside his
pajamas. We all burst out laughing. I went back to Delhi the next day. What a thrilling adventure!
