The twins, Kayla and Kellie Bingham, were accused of “academic dishonesty” in May 2016 after test proctors
(监考员) reviewed the results of an exam on which their performance was considered to be remarkably similar. The
sisters’ identical answers to 296 of 307 questions, including 54 wrong answers, raised alarm bells among university
officials, who launched an investigation into the twins’ performance.
“It was an eight-hour exam during which we exhibited normal test-taking behavior,” Kayla Bingham said.
The Binghams successfully appealed against the decision and filed a lawsuit (起诉) against the university,
arguing that for years they had behaved and performed similarly academically and in athletics. After a four-day trial
in November, a South Carolina jury (陪审团) decided the school had wronged the sisters and awarded them a total
of $1.5 million in damages.
The Binghams’ legal case depended on the theory that it is common for identical twins to perform similarly on
tests given their genetic profiles. Nancy Segal, who runs California State University, Fullerton’s Twin Studies
Center and who testified in the case, said, “I would have been surprised if they hadn’t scored alike.”
In their suit, the Binghams said the cheating allegations (指控) led to their experiencing psychological distress, including panic attacks and stress disorder.
“It was a very hostile environment. People we had known, sat next to and studied with for two years would not
speak to us,” Kellie Bingham told CBS. “They knew our work ethic (道德准则) and study habits but refused to
hear our side of the story. People we trusted completely turned their backs on us.”
The university’s accusation and the events that followed also interfered with the Binghams’ plans to become
doctors. The two now work as government affairs advisers at the same South Carolina law firm. “We came to
understand that once word gets out, even if it’s not accurate, it damages your reputation as a person. So we
completely switched tracks,” Kayla said, adding that she “wanted to fight back because I had been wronged.”
24.Why were the twins accused of cheating in the exam?
A.They did a good job in the test.
B.They exhibited abnormal test-taking behavior.
C.They were seen signaling one another and passing notes.
D.They had remarkably similar test performance.
25.What can be learned from paragraph 3 and 4?
A.The Binghams at last lost the lawsuit against the university.
B.Nancy Segal was not satisfied with the jury’s decision.
C.The jury’s decision was based on a theory about identical twins.
D.This was the first time that the Binghams had scored alike.
26.What attitude do people have towards the twins after the cheating allegations?
A.Approving. B.Suspicious. C.Objective. D.Tolerant.
27.What influence does the university’s accusation have on the twins?
A.They will stick to being a doctor and helping those suffering people.
B.They’ve decided to become advisors instead of doctors.
C.Their reputation has been damaged so they can’t be doctors.
D.They’ve handled it very well and are in a good mental state.

The ability to use tools is rare in the animal world. Recently, ravens(渡鸭)have been proven capable of more
than just using tools.
According to a paper published in Current Biology in April, 2023, scientists designed various tasks for a group
of ravens. The first task was getting a nut out of a puzzle box, requiring two tools: first a short, sharp tool used to
cut the membrane (薄膜), then a long stick to get the nut out of a hole, Five out of 10 ravens were able to reach thenut.
In the following tasks, the ravens were observed picking up tools before doing the task, showing their ability
to plan ahead. Researchers also noticed that each raven had a different way of carrying and using the tools.
Using a set of tools means that the animal can “solve problems through flexibly applying some insight of a
given situation,” Mark Briffa at the University of Plymouth, UK, told CNN.
The great intelligence of ravens makes them popular pets—they can imitate sounds and dance to music.
However, these smart birds may suffer from mental health issues as well. Common signs of stress and anxiety
include biting and feather picking, according to the PetMD website. Biting is often regarded as a form of attack, but
sometimes ravens bite others due to stress and fear. Feather picking can be a more serious sign that the raven is
unhappy. In extreme conditions, a raven may pluck(拔)out all of its feathers.
Some other pets show similar troubling behaviors too. For example, according to Discover magazine, pet dogs
may chew their nails or lick their bodies so much that they form ulcers(溃疡). Pets desire attention, joy and
excitement. As scientists learn more about animal intelligence, we should keep in mind that they may suffer from
psychological illnesses just like we do.
28.What was the first task?
A.Picking up a nut using a long stick.
B.Breaking open a nut with a sharp tool.
C.Carrying a set of tools to a specific location.
D.Cutting a hole in a puzzle box and reaching a nut inside.
29.What did scientists discover about the ravens from their studies?
A.They were unable to plan ahead. B.They could not create a set of tools.
C.They used the tools in different ways. D.Most of them managed to reach the nut.
30.What is a sign of stress and anxiety in ravens, according to the article?
A.Developing ulcers. B.Imitating sounds.
C.Quickly flapping their wings. D.Plucking and picking at their feathers.
31.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.What makes ravens a popular pet?
B.Ravens suffer from mental problems
C.Ravens are smarter than other birds
D.Ravens’ high intelligence is a mixed blessing
DA growing body of research suggests that the gut microbiome (消化道菌群) could play a major role in a rising
chronic disease that makes us physically weaker. The illness, which is commonly called chronic fatigue syndrome
(CFS), is characterized by intense fatigue, gastrointestinal (胃肠道的) issues, muscle pain, and cognitive challenges
such as headaches and difficulty concentrating, among other symptoms. It often follows a viral infection which can
lead to a “disruption” in a balanced gut ecosystem. Actually, an increasing number of Americans have been the
sufferers since the outbreak of COVID-19.
Two recent studies published in Cell Host &Microbe point to changes in the microbiome as a possible
cause of CFS. Research groups at Columbia University and the Jackson Laboratory performed detailed analyses of
the microbes in stool (粪便) samples from patients with CFS and compared them to healthy controls.
The two groups found similar bacteria species were less present in CFS patients compared to control patients.
They focused on bacteria that produce butyrate, a fatty acid involved in regulating metabolism and the immune
system. “Butyrate plays several roles in directing the body’s response to infections, while also protecting the barrier
between the intestine (肠) and the circulatory system, regulating genetic changes in cells, and more,” says Brent
Williams, lead author on the Columbia study. Williams and his colleagues extensively analyzed the role of butyrate
in CFS patients’ guts, even identifying a correlation between low levels of bacteria that produce this acid and more
severe symptoms.
Parallel findings from the Jackson Laboratory team suggest the bacteria that produce butyrate could be used to
diagnose CFS. Previous research has identified microbiome issues in CFS patients, but the new findings help
clarify which microbes could be related to the illness.
More research on butyrate-producing bacteria and other species identified in the studies is necessary to
investigate these potential biomarkers of CFS, the authors say. If the findings are replicated, specific gut bacteria
could be used to diagnose the illness, which is currently identified based on symptoms alone.
The findings additionally point toward possible treatments, such as probiotics or microbiome-focused diet
adjustments—though patients who have been sick for long periods may require drugs that alleviate the damage
done to their metabolism or immune system.
32.What do we know about CFS?
A.It is caused by COVID-19 only.
B.It is an illness with systemic symptoms.
C.It breaks the balance of the gut ecosystem.
D.The number of the infected is on the decrease.33.How did the researcher carry out the recent studies?
A.By controlling data.
B.By identifying genes.
C.By analyzing samples.
D.By comparing symptoms.
34.Which of the following is NOT the significance of the recent researches?
A.Butyrate’s multiple functions are promoted.
B.Targeted gut microbes may be used to diagnose CFS.
C.Certain microbes responsible for CFS are narrowed down.
D.Probiotics supplement with drugs can be a treatment for CFS.
35.What is the text mainly about?
A.Gut microbiome may be the key to CFS.
B.Microbes help digest food and aid absorption.
C.Man’s gut is a rich, diverse tropical rainforest.
D.New method for diagnosing CFS are provided.

With roots 56 (date) back thousands of years, Chinese seals (印章) are more than just a unique
image; they are symbolic of identity, status, and culture. A Chinese seal is a seal or stamp used to mark important
documents, pieces of art, contracts, or any other item that 57 (require) a signature.
The seal was first created in 221 BC. The first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang, ordered his first imperial
(皇帝的) seal to be carved using beautiful white jade (玉). 58 (call) the“Xi”, the imperial seal was only
used by those in power. It wasn’t until the Ming and Qing dynasties 59 the seal’s usage moved from the
imperial to the personal, due to the 60 (expand) of arts. Artists began using a stylized seal carving of their
names to mark ownership of their works. 61 (individual) also began using a personalized stamp for
important documents. These non-official stamps were called “Yin”.
62 (typical), the seals are carved into stone, but they can also 63 (make) of wood,
bamboo, or bone. Seals are carved in one of two ways: the material is carved away from the character, leaving a red

Most of us never forget the person that was there for us in our darkest times. Apparently, penguins (企鹅)
don’t either.
On a typical day, off the coast of a small Brazilian island, Joao Pereira de Souza headed out fishing. He was
disheartened to find that an oil leak had polluted the waters. Staring out at the oily waves, he decided it was not a
good day to fish. But walking on the beach that day, he found a struggling penguin, covered in oil and starving.
Joao took the penguin home, and spent a whole week gently cleaning it and nursing it back to health. He
named it Dindim, a Portuguese word meaning “ice pop”. Dindim is a Magellanic penguin, a species known for
living in the seas of South America. In order to breed (繁殖), they must return to Patagonia, 5,000 miles from
Joao’s home.
After a week of rehabilitation (康复), Joao patiently took Dindim back to the sea and taught it how to swim
again. When Dindim could swim quite well, Joao took it out into the sea by boat and dropped it off to encourage it
to swim back to its home. But when he was back to shore, he found the penguin waiting for him. Joao made two
more attempts later, but each time the bird would just return to Joao’s home. It seemed that Dindim had already
formed a family bond with Joao and wouldn’t leave.Joao had no choice but to keep the little creature. During the following months, Dindim would follow behind
Joao to fish on the coast joyfully. Dindim also liked to lie on Joao’s lap, letting Joao give it showers, allowing Joao
to feed it fish and to pick it up. Joao and his family enjoyed the company of Dindim. But deep inside Joao’s heart,
he knew Dindim belonged to the wild. Gradually, the hot summer days witnessed the change of its new feathers.
Was it time to say “goodbye”?
