My wife and I never had a green thumb when it came to keeping plants alive far more than a few weeks. So,
when I was diagnosed with cancer we didn’t even think about adding a plant to our small apartment. But one day,
my friend stopped by and gave us a beautiful plant as a gift, insisting that it would bring life to our home and a
sense of calmness during this difficult time.
Surprisingly, the plant took off and grew beautifully, and it brought a sense of joy to our home that we
desperately needed. Tending to the plant gave me a sense of accomplishment at a time when I sometimes felt
useless.
I am a physician, and taking care of the plant made me feel like a caregiver once again. It was nice to be able
to nurture something and watch it grow. Since my diagnosis in August 2018, far too often, it seemed, I had to
rely on help from other people. The enormous change left me feeling aimless and unsettled. Watering the plant, as
small an act as it was, connected me to a core part of my old identity. Plants and people could still depend on me.
For the next few months, I was recovering from surgery and receiving radiation. Despite my ongoing
treatments, we found some peace through tending to the plant. The simple act of watering and watching it grow
gave us something to focus 4 outside of my health. It became a small but meaningful part of our lives.
Then, mysteriously, it began to show signs of losing liveliness.

Joe worked as a night watchman in a factory after he graduated from high school. It was a lonely job, but he
was content. He stopped by the beach every day on his way home to watch the sunrise.
One day, he was walking on the beach when he noticed a bottle in the surf. Joe picked it up and saw a roll of
paper inside it. His heart beat fast. He removed the lid and opened the letter. “Hi! My name is Ritchie. I’m sending
this message in the hope that somebody will find it and become my friend.”
It saddened Joe to think of this boy waiting and hoping somebody would answer his message. He took his cell
phone from his pocket and dialed the number written near the bottom of the page.
However, the number didn’t exist anymore. Joe was determined to find Ritchie, so he went straight to the city
library for help. A librarian took him to a section of the library that felt deserted. There, she pointed him to the
shelves filled with old telephone books. She sat down with him, and they searched the telephone books for Ritchie’s
phone number together. Two hours later, the librarian let out an excited scream. “I found him!”
“Thank you,” Joe said, quickly copying down the address. He immediately headed for the address from the
phone book. He almost screamed when he saw that the house at the address had been transformed into a hair salon.
Joe stared at the sign. He held the message from the bottle in one fist and the paper with the address in the other. He
walked in and explained everything to the barber. “Ritchie was born with disabilities. He has been using a
wheelchair since he was a kid. Well, he’s an old man now. If you still want to find him, I hear he’s at the Serenity
nursing home.” Joe thanked the man and drove to the nursing home.

On a Friday evening in December, two weeks before Christmas, I lost my job. I hadn’t seen it coming. I was
excited for the weekend, when my daughter, Kristil, then 12, and I planned to get our Christmas tree. Then I
listened to my voicemail: We’re sorry but your work assignment has ended as of today. My heart sank.
I wasn’t just a single parent; I was the only parent. My paycheck was survival. The next day as we searched
for our tree, I struggled to be cheerful as I eyed each price tag.
“Is everything OK?” Kristil asked. “You seem worried.”
“Absolutely not,” I told her.
Over the next week, I furiously((玩命地) applied for jobs as my bank account grew smaller. I felt as if the
world was closing in on me. On a weekend afternoon, I dropped Kristil in a wealthy gated community for a
birthday party. I watched as she went in, surrounded by all the nice things we couldn’t afford. I drove home
defeated
Back at home. I glanced out window It had en snowing on and off all morning. I noticed a petite(娇小) woman
with short white hair struggling to open her car door against the wind. As she got out, I realized it was my old
professor, Sister Esther Heffernan. I hadn’t seen her since we’d met for lunch thre months ago.
I’d first met Sister Esther 10 years earlier when I was her student at Edgewood College in Madison,
Wisconsin. Kristil was 3 at the time, and I sometimes took her to class. Sister Esther was understanding and
considerate. She would bring coloring books to occupy Kristil. Even after I graduated, Sister Esther kept in touch. I
had grown to love her like family.
I rushed to the front of my building. “What are you doing out in this weather?” I asked as we hugged.
“Well, I tried to call last week but couldn’t get through. Then I called your job and they said you weren’tworking there anymore, so I thought I would come by.” Sister Esther said. “I have gifts for you and Kristl.”
I made her a cup of tea, and we talked. Just being in Sister Esther’s presence gave me hope that things would
be all right.

Initially, I totally believed that Daddy wanted a boy. I could just imagine his disappointment when I was born.
What always frustrated me was that he never tried hiding his feelings from me. He had hoped a boy who would
help him with the farm and finally step into his shoes. But a girl…
I tried to do everything just to please Daddy. Not only did I get up early to help with the housework, but also
some tidy work on the farm. What’s more, I went home straight from school, expecting that I was needed. But he
didn’t seem to be moved by those at all, let alone putting on a smile.
The year I turned thirteen was the 100th birthday of our town. The town council decided to hold a parade(游
行), and they wanted a young lady who could lead the parade. The families in the area were asked to send pictures
of their children. Every parent in the area hoped that their daughter would be chosen, every parent except Daddy.
Mommy sent in a picture of me without telling me. I was always so busy being the boy Daddy wanted, and Inever considered having the chance to lead the parade. So it was quite a surprise when the town council stopped by
one evening to tell us I had been chosen. Mommy was excited. As I anticipated, Daddy showed no interest in the
matter.
The day of the big parade finally arrived. I was dressed in a beautiful white dress. At first I felt shy-I’d hardly
ever worn dresses. But soon I felt like a princess in a fairy tale.

I’d been living in foster care (抚育院) since I was two. I was put in different foster homes. I felt lonely and
confused.
Because I acted up, eventually my previous foster mom sent me back to the adoption agency, just as the mom
before had. I thought I was the most unlovable girl in the world.
Then I met Kate. I was seven. When my foster mother told me that Kate was single and wanted to adopt a
child, I didn’t think shed choose me. I couldn’t imagine anyone would want me to live with them forever. But, Kateasked me if I’d mind living with one parent instead of two.
“All I want is someone who loves me,” I said, feeling excited but afraid, too. I wondered if she’d change her
mind once she got to know me. Kate sensed my fear. “I know you’ve been hurt,” she said, hugging me. “I know
you’re scared. But I promise I’ll never send you away. We’re a family now.”
When I moved in with Mom Kate, I went to sleep that night feeling safe. I prayed I wouldn’t have to leave.
Every day, she told me she loved me. But love wasn’t enough to heal the hurt inside me. I kept waiting for her to
change her mind. I thought, “If I act badly enough, she’ll leave me like the others.”
So I tried to hurt her before she could hurt me. I picked fights over little things and threw tantrums (发脾气)
when I didn’t get my way. I slammed the doors. If Mom tried to stop me, I’d hit her. But she never lost patience.
She’d hug me and say she loved me anyway.
Mom was very strict about my homework, because I was failing in school when I came to live with her. One
day, I kept watching TV before finishing my homework.

Tim’s heart raced as he drove to the lawyer’s office. He was bequeathed (遗赠) a mysterious box his dad had
never allowed him and his sister to even go near. He signed papers, but was shocked to learn he didn’t get the keyto open it and nothing about the key was mentioned in the will. “You’ll have to figure that out!” the lawyer said.
Tim left the office, puzzled about what his late dad had left him.
Just then, he remembered his childhood home where he and his twin sister Karen grew up. They had lost their
mother just two months after they were born. They were raised by their dad Jonathan, and the two were the best
friends! As they grew older, they were drawn to the mysterious box, but their dad warned them never to touch it,
and even hung the key on a nail high above the fireplace so that they would never get their hands on its contents.
Whatever he was hiding from his kids, he was on guard at all times.
As the years fleeted by, Tim and Karen moved on with their respective lives. And their brother-sister bond
went downhill. The twins fought over who would inherit (继承) their dad’s house. Jonathan was heartbroken and
whatever trick he tried to reconcile (和解) them, nothing worked. Meanwhile, Jonathan’s health began to decline,
and even on his deathbed, he wished his kids would put aside their differences and get back together.
What would Tim do with the inherited box now? He went to his childhood home to find the key. The house no
longer appeared like that loving home Tim remembered growing up in. When he reached to grab the key above the
fireplace, he sensed someone behind him. “What are you doing here?” screamed Karen, casting the cell phone
flashlight on Tim’s face.
“Dad bequeathed me his old chest, and I came here looking for the key. But what are you doing here?”
“Dad bequeathed me the key! So I came here to find the chest,” said Karen, puzzled about his father’s
decision.

I still remember the day when we decorated the house, I was ten and it was two weeks before Christmas. I was
looking forward to my presents. Since I’m the youngest in the family, all of the family members would give me a
gift one way or another. Sometimes it was a cookie or a hug but it was always there. I was the only center of
attention and it was feeling good.
My uncles usually would ask me what I wanted before Christmas and that year I knew what I wanted. It was
the spaceship I saw in the ads. I was dreaming of opening a big gift box, and it was there. But that year it came in a
way that I wasn’t expecting.
It was two weeks before Christmas. Just two weeks. She couldn’t wait. My dear mother told my father that it
was time, and then we went to the hospital. After an hour, they told me that I had a sister now. But I didn’t want a
sister. I wanted a spaceship. The next few days went so fast. No one was caring about me. Everyone was talking
about her and I knew that my life is never going to be the same ever again. I wasn’t ready to grow up, to be a big
brother. But it just happened in an instant.
On the day before Christmas, everyone was in our home, talking only about my newborn sister. My family
was becoming hers. Even my uncles didn’t ask me anything about the gift. She stole everything I’d ever had, my
life and my presents. Thinking about this, I cried to sleep. I had a nightmare (噩梦) and woke up at the middle of
the night. Shadows were all around me, and I was defenseless and so weak. I ran into my parents’ bedroom but
couldn’t wake up my poor parents who were just too worn out. I was standing near their bed, trying not to cry when
I saw her. She was awake and looking at me with her big eyes in her small bed.

The Right Thing
My mother worked as a housekeeper and she was often given used toys as well as many other goodies by her
clients. My elder sister and I always loved sharing the recycled books and board games brought home by my
beloved mom, which we considered great gifts life presented us.
The long-awaited Christmas finally approached. One December day, an old model toy car arrived in the load
of goods. It was as long as my forearm and took both hands to lift. My sister didn’t want it, so it was all mine. I
immediately set down to wiping it clean and polishing it to a bright candy-apple red. It turned to be a thing of
beauty, and I became overjoyed at possessing it. My elder sister was amazed at the newly-polished, refreshing toy
car, with a hint of regret and envy in her eyes.
As was planned, our relatives from France came to visit us that Christmas. It was a time when the family bond
got strengthened. I shared the prized toy car with Alex, my young French cousin. Eyes glued to it, he fell in love
with the wonderful, shiny red automobile the instant he saw it. It was a rare moment to see him feeling so relieved
and happy. He’d been unlucky so far in life, suffering severe, life-threatening illnesses as a child, leaving him
mentally and physically stuck and the family starved of cash. Of course, such lovely toys like my dear model car
were unreachable dreams for him.Seeing Alex’s consuming thrill brought by the red car, I was seized by immense joy as well. But contrary to
Alex’s excitement, a voice inside me constantly reminded, “Watch out! He’d keep it for himself.”, which got me
faintly worried. I followed my cousin for fear of something.
My mother also noticed Alex’s fondness for the car. Approaching me, she asked gently in a low voice, “Would
you like to give it to Alex?”

Jack tossed(抛,扔)the papers on my desk—his eyebrows knit(皱眉)into a straight line as he glared at me.
“What’s wrong?” I asked.
He pointed at the proposal. “Next time you want to change anything, ask me first,” He said, turning on his
heels and leaving me in anger.
How dare he treat me like that, I thought. I had changed one long sentence, and corrected grammar, something
I thought I was paid to do.It’s not that I hadn’t been warned. Other women who had worked my job before me called Jack names I
couldn’t repeat. One coworker took me aside the first day. “He’s personally responsible for two different secretaries
leaving the firm,” she whispered.
As the weeks went by, I grew to hate Jack. His actions made me question much that I believed in, such as
turning the other cheek and loving your enemies. I prayed about the situation, but to be honest, I wanted to put Jack
in his place, not like him.
One day another of his episodes left me in tears. I stormed into his office, prepared to lose my job if needed,
but not before I let the man know how I felt. I opened the door and Jack glanced up. “What?” he asked abruptly.
Suddenly I knew what I had to do. After all, he deserved it.
I sat across from him and said calmly, “Jack, the way you’ve been treating me is wrong. I’ve never had anyone
speak to me that way. As a professional, it’s wrong, and I can’t allow it to continue.”
Jack snickered(暗笑)nervously and leaned back in his chair. I closed my eyes briefly. God help me, I prayed.
“I want to make you a promise. I will be a friend,” I said. “I will treat you as you deserve to be treated, with
respect and kindness. You deserve that. Everybody does. That’s what friends do.” I slipped out of the chair and
closed the door behind me.
