Living in China as an Australian can make you feel far from home. But on the last Saturday of September

It was the Australian Football League (AFL) grand final. I was 2 to watch it at the Australian
embassy in Beijing with friends. We 3 our team colors and enjoyed classic Australian food like pies and
sausage rolls. There was lots of laughter and conversation all around. We even had a “chook raffle”, a typical
Australian lottery (抽奖) where the 4 was a frozen chicken.
The atmosphere in the room was 5 despite being thousands of kilometers away from the 6

the 2022 final. For many Australians, the sport is more than just a game. It’s deeply rooted in our 8 and
community. We grow up with it and it brings people together like 9 else.
Even in China, footy is alive and well. I’m part of the Beijing Bombers, a local footy team that 10
everyone, women and men, young and old. There are also three other teams across China in Shanghai, Nanjing and
Guangzhou. Each year we organize 11 where the excitement on the field is matched by the fun of 12
after the matches.
I have to admit, though, I never 13 played AFL until I came to China! 14 in Adelaide, I
knew the basics but had never joined a game. For me, playing footy here has been extra special. It’s helped me stay
related to my Australian roots while also building meaningful 15 in China.
