When the young donkey Daisy May came to us , she was pregnant. With no donkey
experience,I was unprepared for what might come next.
After some difficulty,Daisy’s baby was born.I thought the poor thing was dead.I planned to
put the loss behind us and make sure she never got pregnant again.Just then,I heard a little noise.I
couldn’t believe that baby was breathing and looking at me! We called him Samson, and of
course I became his mother as much as Daisy was.
When Samson was nine months old,I had to separate Daisy and Samson for a few hours a
day to wean(使断奶) him,but otherwise he went wherever she did.I thought he would be lostwithout her.His donkey stepdad Bernard taught him to always be ready to have fun. They enjoyed
playing football together and going for a roll on a hot summer day.
I asked a worker to make a harness(马具) for my three little donkeys. When I brought it
home,I taught them one by one how to pull a cart.Samson watched and freely followed
Daisy. When he was three,I put the harness on him and he knew exactly what to do.
That was 15 years ago. Now,the most exciting thing about Samson is that he has become a
little renowned.People come from all over to see him perform. The neighbors bring their
grandchildren, and my sons bring their friends.
Samson shakes hands, unties my shoes, picks up a hat and more. And when I ask him if he
has any bad habits,he tries to pick my pocket! He surprisingly learned these tricks himself.I just
ask him to do them and he understands.
The relationship I have with my “baby” Samson has been an amazing experience.Every
day is a fun day with this superstar donkey.

Binge-watching(刷剧) is when a person watches more than one episode of a show in quick
succession(一连串,连续).With developments in the speed and connectivity of the Internet,
increases in technology and the rise of on-demand entertainment companies, people can now have
their favorite shows streamed directly to their television at their convenience.
This behavior is nothing new.In fact,“binge-watching” has been officially listed in
dictionaries since 2015.The entertainment companies recognize this behavior and many take steps
to encourage it.Often, instead of releasing each episode on a week-by-week basis,an entire series
will become available concurrently.Once the episode finishes, many platforms will display pop-
ups with “you might like” suggestions,or will automatically play the next episode.
However, recent research suggests that out of the more than half of British adults who watch
more than one episode of a show back-to-back(一集接一集地),almost a third have admitted
missing sleep or becoming tired as a result; and one quarter have neglected their household
chores.Next we’ll be missing work!
Bingeing has other connections—binge eating, binge drinking and binge smoking. All of
them are often associated with a lack of control and a possible route to addiction.Lindsey Fussell,
consumer group director, said,“The days of waiting a week for the next episode are largely
gone, with people finding it hard to resist watching multiple episodes around the house or on the
move.” If people find binge-watching hard to resist, are we witnessing the birth of a new type of
addiction?
The countless number of information and entertainment that television and online media can
bring us is,many would say,a good thing. However, when the activity begins to bleed into other
areas, causing us to stop functioning then it becomes a problem. So,what’s the answer?Moderation! Neither a tiny amount, nor too much. After all,as the old proverb says,“A little of
what you fancy does you good.”

Magic is a form of entertainment that is based on pretending to do things that are
impossible. The magician is a specially trained actor. He tries to make the audience believe that he
has the power to do things which are against the laws of nature.
Magic shows are entertaining as long as the audience does not discover how the tricks are
done. The magician usually depends on his skill with his hands, on his knowledge of psychology,
and, sometimes, on mechanical devices(机械装置).Since magic performance is meant to trick
people, the use of psychology is important. The magician must keep people from noticing all the
movements of his hands and from thinking about the secret parts of his equipment. He must also
lead the audience to draw false conclusions. The magician’s success depends on the fact that many
things seen by the eye are not the things that matter.
Two basic magic tricks are making objects seem to appear and making objects seem to
disappear.A combination of these two tricks makes for some interesting effects. For example, the
magician puts a small ball under one of several cups. The ball then seems to jump from one cup to
another or to change colour. What actually happens is that the magician, employing quick hand
movements or a mechanical device, hides one ball. While doing this he talks to the audience and
waves a brightly coloured cloth with one hand. The audience is too busy watching the cloth and
listening to the magician’s words to notice that his other hand is hiding the ball.
Another favourite trick is to cut or burn something, and then make it appear whole again. What
actually happens is that the magician makes the cut or burned object disappear by quickly hiding it
while the audience watches something else. Then he “magically” makes it appear whole again
by displaying(展示) another object that has not been cut or burned.

Have you ever heard of the Internet of Things (IoT)? It’s a term that is being used more and
more often lately. 1 Basically, any device with an on/off switch that connects to the Internet
is part of the IoT.Based on this definition, what items might be part of the IoT? Look around
you.Are there any devices in your home or classroom part of the IoT? 2 Your friend’s
smartphone? Your teacher’s iWatch? How about those smart headphones you want for your
birthday? These are all part of the IoT.
In many cases, these devices share data with each other. 3 For example, consider the
devices in a smart home. There might be a smart thermostat(恒温器),a smart speaker and a smartoven(烤箱).Now,picture a person walking home with a smartphone in the pocket. If the
smartphone’s GPS knows the person will be home soon,it can send that information to the other
IoT devices, the thermostat can adjust to the person’s preferred temperature. The smart speaker
can play the person’s favorite album. 4 All these things are done before the person walks
through the door—and without the person lifting a finger.
Exactly how big is the IoT? In the near future,it is estimated that about 34 billion devices
will be connected.Just think of all the ways those devices can work together to make life easier!
5 You’re faced with the threat of hackers(黑客) stealing data from devices in homes, cars and
businesses.Security is now more important than ever.
A.But what does it actually mean?
B.But of course,there are drawbacks.
C.Their universality might surprise you.
D.The smart oven can heat up the person’s favorite snack.
E.Too many IoT devices give little thought to the basics of security.
F.The IoT bridges the gap between the digital world and the physical world.
G.By sharing data, devices on the IoT work together to make some parts of life easier.
