After becoming super rich overnight, an Ottawa woman is now making sure struggling families
can afford groceries.
Patricia Patty Warden knows how hard things are right now. Grocery prices keep rising, and for
many families, even a simple holiday meal feels out of reach. “The hardest thing right now isn’t
just the bills—it’s the cost of groceries,” Warden told CTV News. “I’m in a position to give back.”
So she walked into a Greely Foodland and began quietly handing out gift cards to shoppers—
hundreds of them. Many were stunned when they realized a stranger had just paid for part of
their groceries. By the end of the afternoon, Warden thought she had given away more than
$20,000 in grocery gift cards.
Warden won the $70 million Lotto Max jackpot in May 2024, but she says the biggest change isn’t

China’s study tour market is growing very fast, with teenagers crowding into museums, cultural
heritage sites, and tech companies for hands-on, immersive learning—raising the question of
whether China could become a top destination for international student travellers.
At the 2025 Xianghu Dialogue, hosted by the World Tourism Alliance from Wednesday to Friday
in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, the Student & Youth Travel Association (SYTA), a US-based
trade association with over 900 member companies in 30 countries, led some 20 international
educational travel companies to explore the Chinese market and meet local companies.
Carylynn Assante, chief executive officer of SYTA, who was on her first visit to China, said she
was pleased by the welcoming nature of the Chinese people, the well-developed tourism market,
the quality of hotels and restaurants, and the convenient transportation.
She noted that China strongly attracts young travellers from all over the world with its rich
cultural heritage, lively and safe nightlife, and amazing variety of cultures and local foods.
Brent Imrie, president of SYTA and an experienced tour operator from New Zealand, saw a great
chance to create study trips to China focused on culture, language, sports, and music. Calling
Hangzhou “Asia’s Silicon Valley”, Imrie said he was considering organizing STEM tours for
students from the US, Australia, and New Zealand to explore the city’s technological innovation.
Besides organizing study tours to China, Imrie also stressed that by working with the World

The oceans we see today are beautifully blue, but it wasn’t always like this. Long ago, for over 2
billion years, Earth’s earliest oceans had a green colour. This discovery helps us understand
Earth’s past and may even help in finding life on other planets.
About 4.5 billion years ago, Earth became a planet. But the first life forms didn’t appear until
around 800 million years later. Before life, the planet was covered by large oceans with deep-sea
hot springs. These springs sent out a lot of ferrous iron into the water. Around 4 billion years ago,
cyanobacteria, one of the first living things, started to do oxygenic photosynthesis. Modern plants
use chlorophyll for photosynthesis, while ancient cyanobacteria used phycobilins to collect
sunlight. Their growth led to the Great Oxidation Event about 2.4 billion years ago, when oxygen
began to build up in the air and changed how life developed over time.
Scientists had wondered why cyanobacteria needed phycobilins. A team led by Taro Matsuo
studied this. Using computers, they found that as cyanobacteria produced more oxygen, it reacted
with the iron in the ocean. Ferrous iron turned into ferric iron, which can’t break up in water. It
formed rust-like things that took in blue and red light, leaving green light to reflect. So the oceans
looked green. Cyanobacteria developed into phycobilins to take in green light and survive in these
iron-rich, green oceans.
Matsuo wasn’t sure about the “green ocean” idea at first. In 2021, he was doubtful. But after years
of research and a field study in 2023 on Iwo Island, where the water had a green shinning due to
iron hydroxides, his doubt turned into belief.
This study isn’t just about Earth. Matsuo says that green oceans, which might be brighter and
easier to see from far away, could help astronomers look for water on other planets. Instead of
only looking for blue, they can consider green as a sign too.

At the scene, the O’Mattas never learned the young hero’s name. But they really wanted to thank

finally able to meet Mendoza again. Their emotional reunion happened at the Texas Roadhouse
where Mendoza works. There were lots of hugs, tears, and sincere thanks.

reunion and offered Mendoza a life-changing opportunity: a scholarship to go to EMT school to

Modern technology greatly changes students’ life. We can look up learning materials online and
take online courses easily, which saves plenty of time. We also keep in touch with friends
conveniently through mobile phones.

time. Long screen time harms their eyes and makes them less willing to communicate face to face.
