I shook hands with my father in the truck, and for a long time he looked
straight ahead and didn't say a word. But I knew he was going to say a little
to me. "I can't tell anything," he finally said. "I never went to college, and
none of your brothers went to college. I can't say don't do this and do that,
because everything is different and I don't know what is going to come up. I
can't help much with money either, but I think things will work out. "
He gave me a new check-book. "If things get pushing, write a small check. But
when you write one, send me a letter and let me know how much. There are some
things we can always sell." In four years all the checks I wrote were less than
a thousand dollars. My part-time jobs such as reading to the blind student and
sitting with the teachers' kids filled in the financial gaps.
"You know what you want to be, and they'll tell you what to take," my father
went on. "When you get a job, be sure it's honest, and work hard." I knew that
soon I would be alone in the big town, and I would be missing the cool winds
and a life where your thinking was done for you. Then my dad reached down beside his seat and brought the old, broken Bible that
he had read so often, the one he used when he wanted to look something up in a
friendly quarrel with one of the neighbours. I knew he would miss it. I knew,
though, that I must take it.
He didn't say read this every morning. He just said, "This can help you if you
will let it."
Did it help? I got through college without being a burden on the family. I have
been able to make money since.

Usually schools and teachers set the class rules for students. But Wuhan school
recently tried a different way. This year, the rules of Class 12, Grade 7 in No. 6 HighSchool have been made by themselves—all 46 class students.
During the first days of this school year, the teacher allowed his student to make their own
classroom rules, and asked each student to give a list of rules to help make their class a
good learning environment. The whole class shared and discussed the lists. Later they added
or took out some of rules. The rule—making activity lasted about a month. Finally the class
had 30 rules.
Then, rule—making were asked to sign up to the rule list—their promise (承 ) to follow the

rules. A poster with all the rules was put up beside the blackboard.
Most of the rules are about the way students should do. “No cell phone calls and text
messages in class” and “No loud noise in the classroom.” are two examples. But there are
also some for teachers, “No lessons should overrun” is one rule. Also some rules are strict
with the students who break the rules. If a person is late for class above a certain number
of times, he or she loses the chance to be an honor student.
Students say the rules work well in the classroom. “We are the rule—makers, so we
have to obey the rules that we agreed to,” said one of the students.

阅读下列短文,选出最佳选项。
I made a pledge(发誓) to myself on the way down to the vacation beach cottage.
For two weeks I would try to be a loving husband and father. Totally loving. No ifs ,
ands or buts .
The idea had come to me as I listened to a talk on my car radio. The speaker was
quoting(引用) a Biblical(圣经的) passage about husbands being thoughtful(体贴的) of their
wives. Then he went on to say, “Love is an act of will. A person can choose to love.”
To myself, I had to admit that I had been a selfish husband. Well, for two weeks that
would change.
And it did. Right from the moment I kissed Evelyn at the door and said, “That
new yellow sweater looks great on you.”
“Oh, Tom, you noticed,” she said, surprised and pleased, maybe a little puzzled.
After the long drive, I wanted to sit and read. Evelyn suggested a walk on the
beach. I started to refuse, but then I thought, “Evelyn’s been alone here with the kids
all the week and now she wants to stay with me.” We walked on the beach while the
children flew their kites.
So it went. Two weeks of not calling the Wall Street firm where I am a director; a
visit to the shell museum though I usually hate museums. Relaxed and happy, that’s how
the whole vacation passed. I made a new pledge to keep on remembering to choose love.
There was one thing that went wrong with my experiment, however. Evelyn and I still laugh
about it today. Last night at our cottage, preparing for bed, Evelyn stared at me with the
saddest expression.
“What’s the matter?” I asked her.
“Tom,” she said in a voice filled with distress, “do you know something I don’t?”
“What do you mean?”
“Well... that checkup(体检) I had several weeks ago... our doctor... did he tell yousomething about me? Tom, you’ve been so good to me... am I dying?”
It took a moment for it all to sink in. Then I burst out laughing.
“No, honey,” I said, wrapping her in my arms. “You’re not dying; I ’ m just starting
to live .”

______.
A. she looked lovely in her new clothes
B. he had made a lot of money in Wall Street
C. he was determined to be a good husband
D. she was seriously ill
4. The underlined words “one thing” in the passage refer to the fact that ______.
A. he praised her sweater, which puzzled her
B. she insisted on visiting a museum, which he hated
C. he knew something about her illness but didn’t tell her
D. he was so good to her that she thought she must be dying
5. By saying “I’m just starting to live”, Tom means that ______.
A. he is just beginning to understand the real meaning of life
B. he is just beginning to enjoy his life as a loving husband
C. he lived an unhappy life before and is now starting to change
D. he is beginning to feel regretful for what he did to his wife
