Homemade 12,000-Meter Rig Finishes a Second Ultra-Deep Well

A new ultra-deep well, Zhentan-1, was completed on October 2 in the Tarim Oilfield, which lies on the northern edge of the Taklimakan Desert in Xinjiang. Drilled to a depth of 8,345 meters, it is the second ultra-deep well finished by China's first self-developed 12,000-meter rig.

The rig, whose 82-meter steel tower can bear a load of 665 tons, marks the end of China's long reliance on imported equipment for wells deeper than 10,000 meters. Equipped with the country's most powerful winch and an intelligent control system, it can handle much of the drilling work automatically.

On October 1, a six-meter rock core was taken from 8,080 meters below the surface. Formed in the Cambrian period, the rock has lain underground for about 500 million years and is expected to help scientists judge how much oil and gas lie at such depths. More than 270 ultra-deep wells have now been drilled in the Tarim Oilfield, which accounts for over half of the country's total.

Ancient Brocade Wove a Wish for the Nation's Joy

Woven from blue silk about 2,000 years ago, a brocade carrying nine Chinese characters has drawn public attention this holiday. It is kept at the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Museum, and one of the characters it bears is “guo qing”, or national joy.

In 1980, a team excavated two tombs on a lonely platform northeast of the ruined city of Loulan, and the brocade came from a tomb numbered MB2. Judging from the tomb structure, the burial goods and radiocarbon dating of nearby wood, experts dated it to the Eastern Han Dynasty. Researchers explain that “guo qing” then referred to a joyful event of the state, not to the national day that China celebrates today.

The brocade was woven with clouds, dragons and winged beasts, some of which came from West Asia along the Silk Road. Damaged on its right edge, its text is now believed to have read “Climb high and gaze to the four seas, and let wealth, honour and long life be the nation's joy”.

This National Day holiday, a growing number of city governments across China have opened their canteens and car parks to tourists, a practice that has attracted wide attention on social media.

In Changzhi, Shanxi Province, visitors can enjoy a buffet breakfast for just six yuan, while Suzhou in Jiangsu Province has made more than 37,000 parking spaces free. Dunhuang, a popular tourist city in Gansu Province, has opened 8,898 free parking spaces and kept its public buses free for the holiday.

Huainan in Anhui Province has increased its open canteens from one to four, offering a 15-yuan meal that must be booked a day in advance. Nanjing has provided over 40,000 shared parking spaces, and Hangzhou has opened more than 19,000 spaces in more than 420 government offices and publicinstitutions. Reporters estimate that at least 70 cities have taken part, and experts see such moves as a useful supplement to public services, not as competition with tourism businesses.
