Writing has been my way of communicating for years. I’m autistic, and I used to get very uncomfortable speaking to people—I could go days without talking to anyone at all—so writing was my outlet, and so was nature. I’ve grown up in Northern Ireland, and I used to have a hard time at school, a lot of bullying. I found my escape and comfort in nature. I’d spend every spare moment outside, watching the insects and the wildlife around me. Writing about it was my way to process it all.

I had no idea that my book, Diary of a Young Naturalist, would find quite such a wide audience, though. It was mind-blowing that quite so many people wanted to hear this story about a year in the life of a 14-year-old. I suppose its success has given me hope, though. It has also given me this strange platform, and turned me into a spokesperson. I’m happy speaking about nature, but it’s difficult to speak for all autistic people, simply because we are all so different; I’m only one facet of a brilliant diamond.

Over the years, I’ve been distressed watching how much the world was becoming disconnected from nature. We need to make changes in the education system, and put nature back at the most important place. We are born curious, and we just need to be reintroduced to it.

Look at lockdown. It has taught us that we all still have a real interest in the natural world. When we face our biggest crises, we return to the places we seek comfort from most. Our gardens became our focus this past year.

I remember during the first lockdown people saying that the birds seemed to suddenly get louder. They didn’t get louder at all and we simply started paying more attention to them. In other words, nature has been there all along. I just hope that this connection remains when everything goes back to normal.

4. What was one reason for the author to take up writing at the beginning?

A. To take a break from the reality.

B. To stand out from his school friends.

C. To realize his dream of having a comfortable life.

D. To have a different way to communicate with his family.

5. How does the author feel about the book’s success?

A. It makes him feel a bit lost.

B. It allows his voice to be widely heard.

C. It gives him a chance to help autistic people.

D. It encourages autistic people to care about nature.

6.What does the underlined word “distressed” mean in paragraph 3?

A. Upset.

B. Hopeful.

C. Careless.

D. Emotionless.

7. How were people different during the lockdown?

A. They left their gardens unattended.

B. They sought comfort from one another.

C. They started noticing the wildlife around.

D. They paid attention to what others said to them.

China’s former world golf champion and 2016 Rio Olympic bronze medalist Feng Shanshan announced her retirement from professional golf and the LPGA Tour (美国女子职业高尔夫球巡回赛) through social media platform Weibo on Tuesday. The announcement came a year after her last competitive appearance at the Tokyo Olympics. Feng said that in Tokyo it had been an honor to represent her country, for potentially the last time.

Feng started playing golf at a young age thanks to her father’s wish to keep fit. Although golf is indeed small to some extentin China, Feng still considers it “a sport of green, sunshine and friendship”. “I hope that everyone can correctly understand golf and prove that Chinese people can play golf well,” said Feng.

She became the first Chinese player to earn an LPGA tour card in 2007 and went on to be the first Chinese player, man or woman, to win a major and lifted 10 LPGA titles during her 14 active years on the tour. In 2017, Feng became the only Chinese golfer to date to reach the world number one ranking. During an extremely consistentcareer, Feng registered 18 top-10 finishes in majors, two of them in 2021. Even after the retirement, golf has been still a big part of Feng’s life as she is coaching China’s women’s national team since December.

“I can extract some replicablethings from my experience to help young talents. Next, I will use international experience and the situation of Chinese golf to gradually sort out a training system that is most suitable for our Chinese players,” said she. “I hope that they can bag in more champions in international games and even the gold medal at the Olympic Games.”

When we think of ancient people living near the Mediterranean, Greek and Roman civilizations come to mind. But did you know there was a culture that pre-dated the Romans?

Last month, a tomb of an Etruscan fighter, which had been cut into a rock, was unearthed in Tuscany, Italy. Two remainswere found in a room dating back to the 6th century BC. They were thought to be that of a prince and his wife. Recent analysis shows that the prince holding something is actually a princess, and the burned bones next to her are probably those of her husband.

Before there were Romans, central Italy was ruled by a people that existed at the same time as the Greeks. The Etruscans lived in the area we now call Tuscany. They founded some of the earliest cities such as Florence, Pisa and Sienna which exist to this day. Some Greeks believe they were descendantof Iron Age settlers. Others thought they came from Lydia, an ancient kingdom.

Central Italy was rich in copper and iron. The Etruscans were master bronze smiths (青铜匠) and traded with the Greeks and Egyptians. In turn, they were influenced by Greek art and architecture and were the first to develop a written language based on Greek. The Etruscans would bury their dead with treasures for the after-life. Unlike Greek women, who were kept in their houses, those in Etruria were independent and educated. Their civilization reached its top in the 6th century BC, before the invasionby the Greeks and Romans led to its disappearance.

The Romans followed much of the Etruscans’ cultural, artistic and religious traditions. The arch, a cornerstoneof Roman buildings, was borrowed from the Etruscans who were master architects, having built roads, bridges and canals. The organization of the Etruscan government, their written language, and their Gods were embraced by the Romans, as was the practice of keeping slaves. The Etruscans indeed left a lasting effect on the Roman civilization.

12. What can we learn about the Etruscans?

A. They did business with the Greeks, Romans and Egyptians.

B. Their written language had a great influence on Greek.

C. They seldom buried their dead with artistic treasures.

D. There are different opinions about the origin of them.

13. What was the Etruscan society like for women?

A. It was peaceful.

B. It was worrying.

C. It was dangerous.

D. It was progressive.

14. Which word can best replace the underlined word embracedin the last paragraph?

A. Found.

B. Accepted.

C. Doubted.

D. Promised.

15. What would be the best title for the text?

A. The Etruscans’ Influence on Rome

B. The Ancient Civilization of Rome

C. The Etruscans: A Civilized People

D. Life in Egypt Under Roman Rule
