Northwood Community Notice Over the past three weeks, more than twenty residents of Northwood have reported seeing a large, cat-like animal in the green belt behind Maple Street. The Wildlife Office has collected the reports, and we are now asking for your help.

What we know so far          · The animal was first spotted by a dog walker at 6:40 a.m. on 12 March, about 300 metres from the primary school.          · Most witnesses describe it as "as big as a dog, with a long tail and short yellowish-brown fur".          · Footprints were found in the wet soil along the river bank, and some grey fur was found clinging to a fence.          · No one has been attacked, and no pets have been hurt so far.

What you should do if you see it          1. Do not run. Stand still, then walk away slowly. 2. Do not try to feed it or take photos close up.          3. Keep dogs on a lead and small children close to you. 4. Call the Wildlife Hotline (0164-7729-3100) at once and tell us the exact time and place.

What you should NOT do          Never try to corner the animal or drive it towards houses. A frightened wild animal is far more dangerous than a calm one. Remember: this is not a pet that has run away from home. It is a wild animal at large, and it must be dealt with by trained people only.

We will keep the hotline open 24 hours a day until the animal is caught. Thank you for keeping our community safe.

( ) 1. What is the notice mainly about?

A. A lost pet dog in Northwood.

B. Reports of a wild animal in the community.

C. A new park near Maple Street.

D. Advice on how to keep dogs.

( ) 2. When was the animal first seen?

A. Early in the morning on 12 March.

B. On the evening of 12 March.

C. Three weeks ago, inside the school.

D. At noon on the river bank.

( ) 3. What are residents advised NOT to do?

A. Call the Wildlife Hotline.

B. Keep dogs on a lead.

C. Corner the animal or drive it towards houses.

D. Walk away slowly.

( ) 4. What does the notice suggest about the animal?

A. It has already attacked several people.

B. It is a pet that escaped from its owner.

C. It will leave the community very soon.

D. It should be handled by trained people only.

B

For eleven days, the quiet town of Ashford lived with an unusual neighbour.

It began when a keeper at Ashford Safari Park reported that a young leopard was missing. The park said it had escaped through a hole in the fence during a storm. At first, nobody outside the park seemed worried. Leopard escapes in the area were almost unheard of, and the first two reports — from a milkman and a schoolgirl — were not taken seriously.

Then the evidence began to accumulate. A farmer found the bodies of three sheep in his field. Workers on the railway line reported seeing "a large cat" crossing the tracks at dawn. Most telling of all, a retired teacher walking her dog found paw prints in the mud and some yellowish fur clinging to a low branch. She took photographs. When experts from the city zoo examined them, they felt obliged to act.

The hunt for the leopard lasted eleven days and covered nearly forty square kilometres. It was difficult work. The animal was often seen in one village in the morning and reported twenty kilometres away the same evening. Wherever it went, it left behind a trail of uneasy neighbours: locked doors, empty playgrounds and children driven to school by car.

In the end, it was not a hunter but a camera that solved the problem. Pictures from an automatic camera showed the leopard drinking at a stream only 400 metres from the safari park. Keepers set a quiet trap there. On the twelfth morning, the animal walked in, and by nine o'clock it was back in its enclosure.

Experts are now fully convinced that the leopard never went far from home. "Wild animals are far better at hiding than we are at finding them," said one keeper. "That is what makes a search like this so disturbing — and so important."

( ) 5. Why were the first two reports not taken seriously?

A. Because they came from children.

B. Because no photos were provided.

C. Because such escapes were almost unknown in the area.

D. Because the park said no animal was missing.

( ) 6. What made the experts feel obliged to act?

A. The farmer's lost sheep.

B. A report from the city zoo.

C. The storm that damaged the fence.

D. The photographs of paw prints and fur.

( ) 7. What does the underlined word "enclosure" in Paragraph 5 most probably mean?

A. A hospital for sick animals.

B. A small wooden house in the forest.

C. A locked area where animals are kept.

D. A kind of camera trap.

( ) 8. What is the best title for the text?

A. A Lucky Escape

B. Eleven Days with a Wild Neighbour

C. How to Build a Safe Safari Park

D. The Life of a Young Leopard

What to Do If You Meet a Wild Animal

Most of us will never meet a dangerous wild animal face to face. But every year, hikers and campers do come across bears, wild cats or snakes in the countryside. Knowing what to do could save your life.

1. Stay calm and do not run. Running may make the animal see you as prey (猎物). 1 ______ Speak in a low, firm voice so that it knows you are a human being, not food.

2. Make yourself look big. Raise your arms, open your coat, or hold a bag above your head. 2 ______ In most cases, the animal will decide you are not worth attacking and move away.

3. Back away slowly. Keep your eyes on the animal, but do not stare straight into its eyes — that can look like a challenge. 3 ______ Never turn your back on it.

4. Do not corner it. This is the most important rule of all. 4 ______ Give it space and let it find its own way out. A wild animal will not attack a human being unless it is cornered or protecting its young.

5. Report what you have seen. As soon as you are safe, call the local wildlife office or the police. 5 ______ Your report may be the piece of evidence that helps experts find the animal before someone gets hurt.

A. Move sideways or backwards towards a safe place.

B. Stand still and try to look as calm as possible.

C. Wild animals are, in fact, more afraid of you than you are of them.

D. The bigger you appear, the less likely the animal is to come closer.

E. An animal with no way out will fight, however frightened it is.

F. Take photographs so that you can share them online at once.

G. Tell them exactly where and when you saw it, and what it looked like.

It was the summer I turned sixteen, and I was spending two weeks with my grandmother in a small village at the foot of Green Mountain. The village had been quiet for years, but that summer something changed.

It started with missing chickens. Old Mr. Hooper lost six in one night, and Mrs. Lin next door said she had heard heavy footsteps in her yard after midnight. At first people laughed about it — a fox, most likely, or a stray dog. But then a farmer found the body of a young sheep in his field, and pieces of grey fur were found clinging to the wire fence beside it. That was when the village stopped laughing.

My cousin Dan and I were twelve and sixteen, and we were sure we could solve the mystery. One evening we followed a line of paw prints from the edge of the wood to an empty barn at the back of Mr. Hooper's farm. The prints were large — much larger than a dog's — and they were fresh. Dan wanted to run home at once. I told him to wait.

We walked closer. The barn door was half open, and from inside came a low sound, half growl and half cry. Something was in there, and it was trapped. I picked up a broken plank and pushed the door open a little wider. Inside, in the corner, was a large cat-like animal. Its back leg was caught in a rusty trap. When it saw us, it flattened its ears and showed its teeth. It was cornered, terrified and in pain.

"Don't move," I whispered to Dan. "And don't run."

Dan's face went white. "That's not a cat, Alex. That's... that's a puma."

We backed out of the barn slowly, keeping our eyes on the animal. My hands were shaking so badly that I nearly dropped my phone. Outside, I called Grandma first, and then the number the village head had given everyone that morning — the wildlife rescue hotline.

"Stay away from it," the man on the phone said. "Don't try to free it yourself. A hurt wild animal is dangerous. We'll be there in forty minutes."

For forty minutes Dan and I sat on the grass outside the barn, listening to the sounds inside. We did not speak much. Every few minutes I stood up and looked through the crack in the door. The animal had stopped moving. It lay with its head on its front paws, watching the doorway. I had never seen anything so wild and so helpless at the same time.

Then a white truck came up the track, and two keepers in green uniforms got out.

Paragraph 1

The older keeper opened his bag and took out a thick net and a long pole.

Paragraph 2

A week later, a letter arrived at my grandmother's house.
