The great elephant stands in the hot African sun.Slowly the beast lifts its
head and its thick trunk delicately curls around the leaves of a nearby tree, pulling
out the leaves and politely slipping them into its mouth.
The beast's great grey skin is partly broken and aged from the African
sun. Some mud drops on one side from its last trip to a nearby river. Its rough
hair sticks out from all over its skin and two large, white tusks curve elegantly
from either side of its mouth.
高三英语第 4 页(共 12 页)Somewhere a lion roars and something else gives a loud high shout.A vulture(秃
鹫) drifts over far above this world, barely a black dot in the sky.The buzzing of
the countless bush insects seems to collectively shift up in high tune, almost
like the whole of the savanna(热带草原)was singing some song that only they
knew.
I peer through the lens(镜头)at this scene. The zoom lens shows almost
every detail of the elephant:the three small cuts in its left ear from playing as
a baby around thorn trees, the scar down its front leg where a lion caught it
unaware as a young adult, and weathering on its great, valuable tusks from
decades of living in this unforgiving grassland on a dusty continent.
And then the elephant looks at me.
It looks at me with those big, eyelashed eyes with a warmth coming outwards
from a vast, hidden depth there.I can suddenly feel its soul, and feel the line
of elephants that came before this one, trailing back to the very beginnings of
this great savanna. We will never understand what wonders this ancient being
and its kind have seen and whispered to each other across the ages on this
old,sacred grassland.
It looks at me,and it looks through me and sees me.
The elephant knows I am there. It always did.It is not running away, nor is it
fighting. It accepts and forgives. It loves. But,mostly,it just feels sad.It feels sorry
for me.I cannot do this anymore.
I take my eye off the sights and hand the gun back to my
partner. "Let's go home,"I said in a quiet voice,"let's just go
home."
24.According to the first two paragraphs, which word can best describe the
elephant?
A.Mysterious. B.Depressed. C.Aggressive.
D.Graceful.
25.When the author sees through the lens,he is
●
A.deeply moved and filled with sympathy
B.overwhelmed by the elephant's strength
C.annoyed at the presence of other animals
D.shocked and scared by the elephant's scars
26.What does the author intend to do initially?
B.Observe the elephant.
A.Take a picture.
C.Hunt the elephant. D.Study African grassland.

On May 4,2017,395 migratory(迁徙的)birds died after crashing into a tall
building in Galveston,Texas.Their migration routes are full of danger—including
bright city lights.Every year, millions of birds are thought to be killed in building
collisions in the US.
The scene of the mass collision in Galveston was a skyscraper which has four
corner spotlights and glowing green LED lights around the top.The influence of
artificial lights in urban spaces is a well-known phenomenon among birds, but is
still not fully understood.Birds tend to migrate by night, and use the stars to
navigate.During nocturnal(夜间的)migration, they are often seen gathering
around or crashing into lit-up windows or gathering around beams of projected
light. The artificial glow of cities appears to attract them for stopovers. One
explanation is that they may generally fly towards light sources, but also, that the
artificial light confuses, traps and disorients them.
Every tragedy is an opportunity to educate. The accident prompted bird
conservation organisations to take action and jointly develop a science-based
response.Several campaigns encouraged building owners and developers to switch
off non-essential lighting to help travelling birds.Soon the first Lights Out for
Birds programme was formed, which has now expanded into the statewide.
Meanwhile, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology developed a way to forecast bird
migration during specific times and locations, using radar. The resulting BirdCast
migration forecast maps are freely accessible.Their live migration map allows
anyone to check how many birds are migrating now,and where,as well as how
many are predicted to pass in the near future. For one night in October, they
recorded a "billion bird night",with that number or more birds passing in a single
night.
Andrew Farnsworth,a migration ecologist said that early data collection
suggests that Light Out is effective, even with the limited data and uncontrollable
factors. Moreover,Farnsworth points out protecting species that move presents
special challenges for researchers and conservationists.Migrating birds can travel
高三英语第 6 页(共 12 页)thousands of kilometres, crossing and stopping in many different habitats,
traversing borders, and flying through cities—which are continuing to grow
around the world.
There is no single solution to helping migrating birds.Instead, spreading
awareness, empathy and efficient enforcement are all crucial in keeping birds safe
and avoiding collisions."We need to keep our connection to nature through our
eyes, ears, nose, whatever to experience the core of all this research and
observation.“”
28.According to the passage, why do the migrating birds hit the buildings?
A.Their routes are blocked by tall buildings.
B.They attempt to avoid potential dangers.
C.They are affected by the artificial lights.
D.Their migration patterns have changed.
29.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Light Out is thought to be helpful despite data limitations.
B.BirdCast needs further improvement in tracking accuracy.
C.Light Out can guide migrating birds away from artificial lights.
D.BirdCast can predict the number and species of migrating birds.
30.As for helping migrating birds, which would the author agree with?
A.It is worthwhile to improve Light Out.
B.It is necessary to make effective regulations.
C.It is crucial to work out a one-button solution.
D.It is essential to integrate multiple aspects'effort.

The 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded for machine learning
development and the Chemistry Nobel was for protein structure prediction via AI.
Some said the physics prize wasn't really physics."AI is coming for science, too,"
the New York Times concluded. With powerful large language models,AIs can
generate various outputs and even make Nobel-winning discoveries. But have AIs
really taken over science?
To begin with, the physics prize went to Hinton and John Hopfield,a
physicist, who discovered how the physical dynamics of a network can encode
memory.Hopfield came up with an intuitive analogy:a ball, rolling across a
高三英语第 7 页(共 12 页)bumpy landscape,will often"remember"to return to the same lowest valley.
Hinton's work extended Hopfield's model.In short,the Physics Nobel was
awarded for fundamental research about the physical principles of
information, not the broad umbrella of"AI"and its applications.
Meanwhile, the Chemistry Nobel was awarded to biochemist David Baker
and DeepMind researchers Demis Hassabis and John Jumper.Baker first
developed software to design novel protein structures from scratch.Yet by 2018,of
the roughly 200 million proteins cataloged in all genetic databases, only about
150,000 had confirmed structures. Then Hassabis and Jumper introduced
AlphaFold, which provided accurate folding structures for the rest. But even so,
the AI has failed to predict defects in proteins. It's not a catholicon for
every problem in protein folding, but rather an excellent tool.
Many of these tools have disappeared into their uses.We rarely pause to
consider the transistor(晶体管)(for which the 1956 physics prize was awarded)
when we use electronics containing them by the billions. Some powerful
machine-learning features are already on this path. The neural networks that
provide accurate language translation or song recommendations in
popular consumer software programs are simply part of the service. In
science,as in so many other domains, this trend suggests that when AI tools become
commonplace, they will fade into the background, too.
Still a reasonable concern might be that such automation threatens the efforts
of human scientists. As AI becomes essential to further scientific progress, will any
prizes recognize work truly free of AI?
AI can revolutionize science. It has already helped us see proteins with
previously unimaginable clarity.Soon AIs may dream up new molecules for
batteries. In short, they may do many things, some of which previously seemed
impossible. But they have a crucial limitation tied to something wonderful about
science:its empirical dependence on the real world, which cannot be overcome by
computation alone.
Science also needs experimenters—human experts driven to study the
universe, and who will ask questions an AI cannot.Physics—its core ethos is
"that
高三英语 第 8 页(共 12 页)the world is understandable"in quantitative,predictive terms solely by careful
experiment and observation. That real world still exists for future scientists to
study, whether aided by AI or not.
31.Regarding the Nobel Prize in Physics, the author might think
●
A.it should have been awarded to more physicists
B.it aims to encourage physicists to engage in AI research
C.it is a recognition of the broad applications of AI in physics
D.it is justified for its focus on physical principles of information
32.What does the word"catholicon"underlined in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
B.A big improvement.
A.A final solution.
C.A complete cure-all. D.Acommon obstacle.
33.What can we learn from this passage?
A.AI tools are restricted to specific scientific branches.
B.AI tools will become less noticeable once widely used.
C.AI will overcome its dependence on real-world experience.
D.AI poses a threat on traditional methods of scientific inquiry.
34.What would be the best title for this passage?
A.AI and Science:Revolution or Evolution?
B.Is AI Coming to End Scientific Exploration?
C.AI and Science:ANew Era of Collaboration?
D.Is AI Dominant in Nobel-Winning Discoveries?
第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,共 10 分)

Hesitation as intuition(直觉)
You've thought about it.You've made your decision and then.….you hesitate.
Your mouse hovers over the “purchase now"button, you've written the text
but
can't quite bring yourself to press "send".You hesitate.
35 高三英语第 9 页(共 12 页)Our culture values doing.We're constantly urged to“go for it."But what if
hesitation is not a sign of weakness but rather a valuable signal? 36 But we
don't always make it a practice to listen to our bodies. When we do pay attention,
we have access to a lot of nonrational information including our intuition. If you
notice yourself hesitating,it might mean a part of you isn't quite sure.Hesitation
can be the body's way of alerting us to overlooked details or concealed information
that could be crucial to our choice.
Since hesitation can carry such significance,it becomes essential to
understand the nature of the signals our bodies send.Although distinguishing
between intuition and fear or anxiety is not easy, when we cultivate the habit of
self-awareness and understand our fears,we can begin to decipher( 辨
认)the messages behind our hesitation. Moreover, our rational minds
have their limitations. 37 Therefore,by integrating our emotions and
physical sensations into the decision-making process,we access a more
comprehensive understanding.
To make more informed decisions,we can employ specific strategies. One
way that we can help ourselves with a specific decision is to notice when there's
hesitation and,if you have the time, wait. 38 Another interesting way to look
at making a decision is to walk up to the door of it.Take action as if you had
already made the decision. And before it's too late, notice how it feels to walk that
path. That may give you more information than thinking ever could.
39 By integrating both rational and intuitive elements,we can handle
the complex choices with greater confidence and clarity.
A.It's easy to miss intuitive signals when we are moving from thinking minds.
B.They work within fixed frameworks that might not match the complex reality.
C.While our minds are undoubtedly powerful, our bodies also hold a wealth of
wisdom. D.In nature, the key to effective decision-making lies in seeing hesitation
as a help. E.Check back in with the decision you thought you made and see if
anything differs. F.Hesitation means your intuition is trying to speak to you from
deep inner place. G.This hesitation is common yet often overlooked in our
decision-making process.
We often seek fulfilling relationships for happiness, yet forget it lies within us.
But have you ever wondered that with so many advocates of self-love,why
haven't we been able to love ourselves?Self-love is the root of all your healthy
relationships. The stronger your roots are,the more difficult it will be for winds to
knock down the branches.Self-love,in its nature,is to truly accept who you are
and what your worth is.
The key elements of self-love are essential.Self-acceptance is foremost,as
our imperfections, insecurities, and perfections shape our unique personality.
Self-compassion is equally vital. We must forgive ourselves for mistakes, failed
goals, and setbacks, treating ourselves with the same empathy we show our dearest.
Also,self-care matters.Since relying on others'care is impractical,only we can
provide the best care for ourselves.
Self-love and healthy relationships cannot be separated.Actually,self-love is
the very core of any healthy relationship.
First of all,self-love empowers us to define relationship boundaries.Knowing
our worth enables us to tell what we'll accept, having a clear grasp of our needs,
values, and limits. For example,an efficient administrative assistant is often asked
by colleagues to handle all the paperwork and scheduling tasks. But with self-love,
she knows to balance her own core work and personal development. She offers
reasonable assistance, not taking on the entire workload, setting boundaries as she
understands her value and the importance of a balanced team.
Moreover,self-love is vital in conflict resolution in a relationship. When
people truly love themselves, they have a healthier understanding of everything.
They have more confidence and self-esteem to be able to voice their opinions.
When conflicts arise,a person with self-love and self-awareness will approach the
situation calmly and respectfully, considering the well-being of all people involved.
Ultimately,self-love is the compass guiding us to personal satisfaction and
harmonious connections.Cultivating this love paves the way for balanced,
respectful relationships, enriching our lives and those around us.40.What is the nature of self-love?
41.What are the key elements of self-love according to the passage?
42.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it
and explain why.
>When conflicts arise,a person with self-love will approach the
situation in a self-interested way.
43.How can self-love benefit you in your daily life?(In about 40 words)
