As the cool moonlight shone through an orange garden in the Jiulong township of Southwest China’s
Chongqing,44-year-old Tao Heng could be found setting up her phone in a nearby studio. “Hello, darlings! I’m

Tao Heng is one of these women who have seized the opportunities presented by the digital age to transform
their rural communities. Women in rural China now make up over half of the rural workforce, and in recent years,
have been rising as key drivers of the increase in rural economy. They’ve moved from traditional domestic and
farming roles to the forefront of entrepreneurship and digital innovation.
Whether it’s on the front end of livestreaming or the back end of sales, women have significant advantages.
“In the e-commerce industry chain, stages such as order processing and shipping involve thorough check processes,
and this work is well-suited to women, who tend to be more careful,” Tao says, “Women who work in
livestreaming often have advantages in terms of patience and communication skills.”
Women like Tao are leveraging livestreaming, e-commerce and digital platforms to boost local economies and
empower their neighbors. Tao has also established a vocational training school that trains over 100 locals each year,
helping her community—especially stay-at-home mothers—find employment. “Leading everyone in my hometown
to increase their income and prosperity gives me great motivation,” Tao says. She is particularly pleased when she
sees rural women who were once shy now confidently introducing agricultural products before the camera to
customers.

In the summers of 2018 and 2019, ecologist James Ryalls and his colleagues would go out to a field near
Reading in southern England to stare at the insects flying around black mustard plants. Each time a bee, moth,
butterfly or other insect tried to get at the pollen（花粉）in the small yellow flowers, they’d make a note.
It was part of an unusual experiment. Some plots of mustard plants were surrounded by pipes that released
ozone and nitrogen oxides—polluting gases produced around power plants and conventional cars. Other plots had
pipes releasing normal air.
The results shocked the scientists. Plants covered by pollutants were visited by up to 70 percent fewer insects
overall, and their flowers received 90 percent fewer visits compared with those in unpolluted plots. “We didn’t
expect it to be quite as dramatic as that,” says study coauthor Robbie Girling, an entomologist at the University of
Southern Queensland in Australia.
A growing body of research suggests that pollution can disturb insect attraction to plants—at a time when
many insect populations are already suffering deep declines due to agricultural chemicals, habitat loss and climate
change. Around 75 percent of wild flowering plants and around 35 percent of food crops rely on animals to move
pollen around, so that plants can fertilize one another and form seeds. The black mustard plants used in the
experiment exhibited a drop of 14 percent to 31 percent in successful pollination（授粉）as measured by the
number of seedpods, seeds per pod and seedpod weight from plants surrounded by dirty air.
“This research is still young,” says Jeff Riffell, a neuroscientist at the University of Washington. “We’re only
touching the tip of the iceberg in terms of how these effects are influencing these insects. We’ll work out how
strong and widespread these effects of pollution are, and how they operate.”

As the climate warms, the Earth’s natural systems are starting to behave in increasingly unpredictable ways.
“Reliable forecasts of future climate trends like temperature rise and sea-level change are crucial for policy-makers
trying to plan for the impacts of climate change,” says Dr. Joe Wallwork, a research software engineer at
Cambridge’s Institute of Computing for Climate Science （ICCS）, adding, “We need better early warning
systems to accurately forecast when and where extreme events will occur.”
Hence, machine learning and software engineering are becoming vital. “A lot of climate models are limited in
resolution,” adds Dr. Jack Atkinson, also a research software engineer at ICCS. “Climate processes can happen at
very small scales, and machine learning can help us improve the representation of these processes in models.”
Atkinson is the lead developer of FTorch, a software that bridges the gap between traditional climate models
and the latest machine learning tools. This breakthrough is improving climate predictions by better representing
small-scale processes that are challenging to capture in models. FTorch is now used by major institutions, including
the National Center for Atmospheric Research, to enhance climate simulations and inform global policy.
Models in development by the team, which use FTorch, use fewer assumptions and more real climate data.
They’re powering the science of many climate studies— from sea-ice change, to cloud behaviour, to greenhousegases in the atmosphere.
They’re helping to make climate predictions faster, which has important climate implications too. “It’s an
unfortunate irony that climate models require quite a bit of energy to run,” says Wallwork. “With machine learning
we can make the models more efficient, running faster so we can potentially lower our emissions（排放）.”
