Dear Jenny,
I’m writing to share with you a memorable incident that happened last week.
In the International Cultural Exchange Program, I was in charge of hosting a British student
named Tom on behalf of our school. While having dinner in the canteen, I prepared some Chinese
specialty dishes, like braised pork and roast duck. To show my hospitality, I kept piling food onto
his plate, hoping he would like it. He hesitated for a long time before taking it awkwardly. Later, I
learned that Westerners would rather help themselves than be served like this.
It was not until then that I realized cultural differences really matter in communication. We had
better learn more about others’ customs to avoid such misunderstandings.
Have you ever had such interesting stories? Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

But then, I closed my eyes and pictured my dad’s face. The one he got when he’d taught me to ride
a bike and I’d fallen and wanted to quit, or when I’d lied about breaking his favorite cup as a kid. He’d
always told me, “Integrity isn’t about doing the right thing when someone’s watching — it’s about
doing it when no one is.” I thought about how proud he’d been when I got my license, how he patted
me on the shoulder and said, “Drive like you respect yourself and everyone else on the road.” Taking
a deep breath, I calmed myself down and resolved to do the right thing. I needed to leave a note with my
contact information so that the car owner could reach me.
I found a piece of paper and a pen in the car glove box. With my fingers still trembling, I
scribbled down my name, phone number, and a sincere apology, and then tucked the note under the
Mercedes’s windscreen wiper. Watching the paper fluttering in the gentle breeze, I breathed a sigh
of relief. The sun was still shining, but the overwhelming nervousness was gone — replaced instead
with a quiet, steady pride. I climbed back into the Ford, fired up the engine, and headed home ready
to tell my dad everything, steeling myself to face the consequences of my mistake. After all, honesty is
always the best policy.听力原稿
Text 1
W: Were you woken up by the dog barking last night?
M: Yeah, I heard the Wilson’s house was broken into.
W: Oh no, I should have called the police.
Text 2
M: Let’s go to the movie after the dinner at the Rose Hotel. It’s all my treat.
W: Wow, that’s great. I am wondering whether to watch Ted shows at home or go out for a walk along
the beach tonight.
Text 3
W: The film we saw in August performed poorly at the box office. It couldn’t even cover the investors’
costs.
M: Oh, I’m not surprised. Even the all-star cast couldn’t rescue the weak plot.
Text 4
M: I wonder why Rene didn’t come to hear Jackson speak.
W: In fact, he slipped in at the last minute and sat in the back of the room.
Text 5
W: I just bought this book and the sales. I paid only eighteen dollars for it, six dollars off its original
price.
M: It’s really a bargain, but Tony bought the same book for just half the original price at another
bookstore.
Text 6
W: Oh, Jeremy, there you are. Have you had a chance to check out the problem I mentioned yesterday? I
think there’s an issue with the heater in the conference room.
M: Ah, not yet. I’ve been setting up the new work spaces for the part-time workers we recently hired.
W: I’m planning to host our visiting clients in that room this afternoon, so I’ll change the location if it’s
still cold in there.
M: OK, I’ll get to the conference room as soon as I finish.
W: Great. And let me know if it can’t be fixed by noon.
Text 7
W: Hello, this is Cherry.
M: Hello Cherry. This is Beckham. I’ve some good news for you. Maria was very satisfied with you and
said she’s looking forward to working with you. Isn’t that great? Congratulations dear. How does it feel
to be Maria’s new agent? I imagined you were just delighted with this news. Let’s see you can start on
Monday, right?
W: Well, would you mind my starting on Wednesday? I’m visiting my father in Miami and because I
don’t live in Los Angeles, I’ll need a couple of days to find a flat and get some furniture and move from
Salt Lake City.
M: Oh well then. In that case I suppose Thursday would be good. Okay, see you then.Text 8
W: Hey, David, I just dropped off my car to get my winter tires put on at George’s garage and I didn’t
see your car there. Didn’t you say that you were going to take your car in to get your oil changed this
morning?
M: Oh, I didn’t take my car there. I ended up taking it to another place.
W: Really, why did you do that? I thought you said you were happy with the work they did to your car
the last time you took it in.
M: I know, but I found a place near my apartment. More importantly, it cost me less. Plus, Peter used to
take care of my car at George’s garage, but he doesn’t work there anymore. He started his own shop
downtown somewhere.

W: Can I help you?
M: Yes, I want to find a place to stay for a few days.
W: Well, there are some good hotels. Carlton house is near the main square in the city centre. But you
might also be interested in the Royal Oak. It’s in the countryside, about ten kilometers away and very
peaceful. Then there is the Bridge Hotel. It’s in town, but not in the center. It is out on the airport road.
M: Hmm, that might be a bit far, actually. Okay, now the one you mentioned in the city centre, can you
tell me a bit about it?
W: Well, it is quite unusual. It used to be a large private house. It was bought by the Venice Chain and
they completely redecorated it. That’s a five-star hotel.
M: Does it have a swimming pool?
W: No, the Royal Oak has an outdoor pool, which is lovely in summer. But the only hotel with an indoor
pool is the Bridge Hotel.
M: I see. Well, I think I’ll probably go for the city centre.

M: Honestly, I can’t believe my dream has come true. As a young man, I have always been
imagining moving to Los Angeles one day and putting my whole heart into music. Of course, at the time
this seemed like a very distant hope, but thanks to my fans, supporters and wife, I’m here today. First, I
released three twelve song records, which slowly gained attention around my home town in northern
England and some nearby regions like Scotland and Ireland. And now my latest project, which was just a
single song, caught the world’s attention. For that, I’d say it only happened because I refused to give up.
Through the ups and downs in my career, I did it all for the love of music, so being recognized for this
award means a lot to me. To all the young musicians out there, you can do it too. Plus, to all the fans and
anyone enjoying my music, I’ve done this for you. This award is for all of us. May many more great
things come in the future. Now put your hands together for our host Bob Ackerman with the next award.
