Photographer Rebecca Douglas has always been crazy about the night sky. Her love
of the stars has taken the UK resident on "star walking" trips to Iceland and into the
Arctic. For nature lovers like Douglas, star walking turns out to be a good way to enjoy
life.
Hiking at night isn't uncommon. Plenty of people hike after dark to get to
学科网(北京)股份有限公司campsites or watch the sunrise from a mountaintop. Star walking goes a step further by
mixing hiking with stargazing.Rather than heading to an observatory or setting up a
telescope in your backyard, star walking takes you on a brief journey to look at the
stars from different viewpoints.
学科网(北京)股份有限公司“An observatory can never take the place of getting out into a rural landscape
under a blanket of stars,"says Gary Lintern of Stargazing Nights in Durham, England, who
leads guided nighttime hikes. "It's a magical experience.and I enjoy sharing it, especially
at some of my favorite locations, like the High Force Waterfall, England's largest
waterfall, in Teesdale."
There are plenty of studies that show the health benefits of being in nature.
Spending at least two hours a week outdoors, particularly while engaging in activities
that involve "effortless attention", can decrease blood pressure, heart rate, and stress
levels. Walking at night has the added benefit of improving sleep, which is important for
overall health, says Christina Pierpaoli Parker,a behavioral sleep researcher at the
University of Alabama.Parker says that star walking works on two physiological processes
that determine sleep quality. "Movement and exercise, such as relaxing stargazing walks
outside, may facilitate sleep."she says.
Lintern advises reading up on the night sky before setting out Free mobile
apps, such as Star Walk 2, can help identify celestial bodies and are easy to use-simply
point your phones at the sky to get a map. Websites like Sky Telescope and NASA's
Space Place cover the basics, have in-depth explanations for constellations (星座),and
offer advice on gear and equipment.
At the end of the day, the best advice is to take it slow and enjoy the journey.
24.Why did Douglas go to Iceland?
A.To take photos there.
B.To enjoy the night sky there.
C.To experience daily life there.
D.To search for an observatory there.
25.What can we know about star walking?
A.It is a combination of hiking and stargazing.
B.It is similar to stargazing at an observatory.
C.It only requires a telescope in your backyard.
D.It becomes more popular because of Gray Lintern.
26,What does the underlined word“facilitate"in paragraph4 probably mean?
A.Slow.
B.Worsen.
C.Prevent.
D.Promote.
27.What's the fifth paragraph mainly about?
A.Some useful mobile apps.
B.Famous websites about hiking.
C.Proper suggestions on star walking.
D.Basic knowledge of equipment for stargazing.

Katherine Rooks, a Denver-based writer, had sent her son a text message about
coming home from school.
"I could tell from his response that he became upset suddenly in our thread. And
when he came home, he came over and said, 'What did you mean by this?" Rooks was
confused. "So we looked at the text together and I said, 'Well,I meant, see you later,or
something. I don't remember exactly what it said.'And he said,'But you ended with a full
stop!I thought you were really angry!"Rooks wasn't angry, and she explained to her son
that, well, periods are how you end a sentence.
But in text-messaging—at least for younger adult-periods do more than just end a
sentence: they also can set a tone. Gretchen McCulloch, a linguist, said that when it
comes to text-messaging, the period has lost its original purpose. But that doesn't mean
the period has lost all the purposes in text-messaging. Now it can be used to indicate
seriousness or a sense of finality." But caution is needed," said McCulloch, noting that
problems can start to arise when you combine a period with a positive emotion, like
学科网(北京)股份有限公司"sure"or "sounds good".
A period can accidentally set a tone. A recent study conducted by Binghamton
University psychology professor Celia Klin confirmed this. Researchers asked
undergraduates to evaluate a text exchange that included an innocent question and the
answer "Yes". Some saw "Yes" with a
学科网(北京)股份有限公司period and some saw the word without. They found consistently through many
experiments that "Yes"with a period resulted in responses that were more negative. So
people thought "Yes"with a period was less friendly, less sincere, and so on. "I really
don't like getting text messages that end in periods because it always feels so passive-
aggressive," said Juan Abenante Rincon, 24, a social media manager for Adidas."Like, are
you mad? What's going on? Like, did I do something wrong?"
Klin said this demonstrates language is constantly changing. "Language evolution has
happened; it'll continue to happen, and isn't it great that we're so linguistically flexible
and creative?"
28.Why does the text begin with Katherine's conflict with her son?
A.To lead in the use of period in texting.
B.To emphasize the great power of words.
C.To show youngsters' attitudes towards texting.
D.To suggest the right use of punctuation marks.
29.Why is Juan Abenante Rincon mentioned in the text?
A.To make assessments on the recent study.
B.To confirm the findings of the recent study.
C.To put forward doubts about the recent study.
D.To show great opposition for the recent study.
30.What is Celia Klin's attitude towards the changes in the meanings of full stops?
A.Disapproving.
B.Conservative.
C.Worried.
D.Positive.
31.What can be the suitable title of the passage?
A.Full Stops:Be Original
B.Full Stops:Be Cautious
C.Language Evolution:Be Flexible
D.Language Evolution:Be Consistent

The Beijing Winter Olympics and Paralympics saw many excellent athletes compete
on the ice and snow, prompting an enthusiasm for winter sports in China. In fact, the
country has had a deep relationship with winter sports since ancient times, with skiing
originating in the Altay prefecture of Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region.
In 2005,cave paintings of Altay people hunting on skis with poles were discovered,
which archaeologists estimated could be more than 10,000 years old. Since then, Altay
has been recognized by many as one of the birthplaces of skiing, according to Xinhua.
As one of the richest collections of ancient rock art in China, there are herds of
camels, sheep, wolves and human figures. The painting on the roof of a cave in
Dundebulake village of Altay prefecture depicts humans on skis, bending their knees as
they travel alongside animals, including deer and moose.
The rock art in Dundcbulake is well preserved because the pictographs (象形文字)
are well hidden in the cave.
Additionally, Alta's dry climate has been a useful preserving agent, according to a
2016 research paper published by the Hebei Normal University.
Unique geographical and climatic conditions make skiing an indispensable part of
local people's lives. The climate in Altay is mild and not too windy,so skiers are less
affected by weather conditions, allowing them to safely move faster.
Unlike the modem skis we use nowadays, fur skis have been used as a means of
transportation for the snowfield inhabitants of Altay for more than 100 centuries,
according to rock carvings uncovered in the area.
Making skis has been a traditional skill. The handmade skis have a layer of horse
skin. The fur on the horse skin can help decrease friction (摩擦力) when they slide
down the hill, while the skis also prevent skiers from falling when they walk up. At the
学科网(北京)股份有限公司same time,they have a wooden
学科网(北京)股份有限公司stick in hand to keep balance, according to China Daily.
Fur ski competitions have been held annually by the local government. Many locals
would display their maneuvers (高超的移动) at the competitions.
32.Which of the following is evidence that Altay is one of the birthplaces of skiing?
A.Altay people wore skis to hunt animals.
B.The modem skis are very similar to fur skis.
C.Local people have used fur skis for a long time.
D.Humans on skis were depicted in cave drawings.
33.What have fur skis been used for in Altay since ancient times?
A.Hunting.
B.Transportation.
C.Competition.
D.Entertainment.
34.How does horse skin benefit skiers?
A.It helps them better control directions.
B.It makes them slide more comfortably.
C.It helps them slide down smoothly.
D.It helps them keep steady while sliding.
35.What does the article mainly talk about?
A.The origins of skiing in Altay.
B.The ancient rock art found in Altay.
C.The development of skiing in China.
D.The current popularity of skiing in Altay.
第二节;(共5小题:每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选
项。
The best way to learn new skills has been widely debated. In 2008, Malcolm
Gladwell published Outliers, which introduced the so-called "10,000 hours rule" that
states it takes 10,000 hours to become an expert in a subject.
__36__ Let's break down what this involves.
You're willing to learn from people you don't like.
We tend to get annoyed with people who don't share our view of the world.
__37__ That's exactly why they offer opportunities to learn. You don't need to buy into
someone's values about the world to learn from them and they can offer a new
perspective.
__38__
Stick to one comfortable mode of learning is a bad idea. Master learners are willing
to learn from lots of sources, including the following: technical dry books or manuals,
YouTube or Instagram, calling or visiting people they don't know, searching the internet
and through friendships and social relationships.
You can reflect on your work and think outside of the box.
Master learners don't just become good in their field. They think about what they
lean in ways that aren't focused on one topic. __39__ They allow their minds to move
in creative ways and connect seemingly diverse concepts and tools that other people
don't connect.
You approach learning with your learning objectives in mind.
I love learning about other people's learning processes. I once watched a video
made by a medical student who stopped going to lectures. She recognized that the
lectures weren't as efficient or effective as reading her own books.
Master learners don't follow someone else’s learning plan. For example, they don't
use one language learning app for hundreds of lessons without exploring other options.
__40__
A.You're willing to try out different thinking styles.
B.You're ready to learn through different modes and channels.
学科网(北京)股份有限公司C.People who are different from us will tend to approach problems differently.
D.But from a psychological perspective, what makes someone a master learner?
E.They develop their own learning plan based on their specific learning objectives.
F.The smartest, most creative people don't rely solely on focus for getting things done.
学科网(北京)股份有限公司G.To add to our learning,we'll need to be willing to learn from people who we don't
personally like.

I was a single mother in my 30s who lived down and out with my daughter Peggy
in a small apartment, struggling hard to make our needs meet.
One day, I headed to the downtown for an interview. I sat down in the streetcar,
and there against the seat was a beautiful silk umbrella with a silver handle decorated
with gold scrolls, among which there was a name carved.
On impulse I determined to find the owner myself. I got off the streetcar in the
heavy rain and thankfully opened the umbrella to protect myself. Then I searched a
telephone book for the name. I found it immediately and called it,waiting patiently, and
then a lady answered.
"Yes," she said in surprise, with extreme excitement. "It was my umbrella which had
been stolen a year ago."
So appealing was her pleasure that I forgot I was looking for a job and went
directly to her small house. She took the umbrella.with teary eyes, explaining with
choking voice that the umbrella was given by her parents, now dead. Her happiness at
retrieving (找回) this special possession was such that to have accepted her reward
would have spoiled something, so I refused her offer and left.
The following months were hard. I can only obtain temporary employment, for a
small salary. What was worse, I had just lost my last job before Christmas, with only
fifteen dollars left. Unless a miracle happened, I would be homeless in January, foodless
and jobless. I had prayed steadily for weeks, and there had been no answer but this
coldness and darkness.

There I stood, frozen overwhelmed by misery.

Suddenly, the doorbell rang and ran fleetly to answer it , calling that it must be
Santa Claus. Then I heard a man's hearty voice coming and went to the door. He was
a delivery man with his arms full of parcels. "This is a mistake”, I said, but he read the
name on the parcels and they were for me. When he had gone, I didn't know what to
do. Subsequently, Peggy and I sat on the floor, looking at each other unbelievably. What
a surprise! I searched for the name of the sender.
Abruptly, a note attached to one package caught my eyes. I picked up the note,
which read "Thanks for your returning the umbrella. Merry Christmas!” It was the lady
who sent us these parcels. Holding the note tightly, I was on the verge of tears, with a
stream of warmth spreading across my body. On the chilly Christmas, I forgot I had no
money for the rent and only fifteen dollars in my pocket. We just sat in our small
apartment unwrapping the gifts one by one in happiness. A sweet peace flooded into
me like a blessing, which made me hopeful again.
