A Hearty Welcome
Chase counted his new year gifts one more time as he put a robot-shaped eraser into each envelope. “Twenty,
twenty-one, twenty-two.”
“Do you have one for everyone in your class?” Mom asked.
“Yep!” Chase said. “I’m ready for the party tomorrow!”
When Chase got to school the next day, he saw a new girl in his classroom. She stood near Ms. Robins and
looked around shyly.更多全科试卷及资料,请关注公众号:高中试卷君
“This is Eva,” said Ms. Robins. “Will someone volunteer to show her around today? “Chase raised his hand
since he liked showing the new kids around and helping them feel welcome.
“Thanks, Chase, “Ms. Robins said. “Now let’s get down to our work.”
That’s when Chase realized he didn’t have a new year gift for Eva. No one else would have one either. Chase
pictured his classmates’ desks covered with gifts while Eva’s desk was empty. He felt sad about that.
At a break, he was careful not to mention the party as he showed Eva around the playground. At lunchtime, he
walked Eva to the lunchroom, still worried about what would happen at the party. Eva had brought a packed lunch.
so Chase showed her where she was supposed to sit and introduced her to some of the kids at her table.
While eating, Chase suddenly remembered that kids often included candy hearts with the new year gifts they
exchanged. This won’t be a New Year’s Day for Eva with no gifts. But as he sat down at his table, an idea flooded
into his head. He whispered it to the kids around him. Soon everyone at the table was nodding and whispering.
When they were back in the classroom after lunch, Chase told Ms. Robins about their plan. Ms. Robins
smiled. “That’s very thoughtful, “she said. “Let’s go for it.”
It was math time, so Chase invited Eva to study with him. He made sure Eva sat with her back to the room so
she wouldn’t notice.

Meanwhile, her new classmates were busying working on something. They were going to give Eva their
“hearts”. Quickly but quietly, Ms. Robins, with an exquisite paper bag she fetched from her office, was walking
around the classroom to collect the candy hearts. Growing heavy with the paper bag was the students’ welcome for
their new classmate. Sitting beside Eva, Chase felt his heart racing and palms sweating. In order not to ruin the new
year surprise for Eva, he pretended to be discussing math problems with her to occupy her attention. The stone in
his heart finally dropped when Ms Robins tiptoed towards him and placed the paper bag on his hands.
“Here’s your new year gift, Eva. It’s from everyone.” said Chase. Surprise written on Eva’s face, she turned
around and was greeted by the sunny smiles on her classmates’ faces. “Open it,” I encouraged. No sooner had she
opened the paper bag than everybody cheered, “Happy New Year”. The candies which were made in the shape of
hearts blurred her eyes. If only she had been able to express how much this precious gift meant to her. Springing
from her seat, she stepped forward and bowed to her new but considerate classmates, who not only erased her
anxiety but also planted the seed of hope in her heart. What a hearty welcome!

【 高考真题】
(2021年浙江卷1月读后续写)
My dad, George, only had an eighth grade education. A quiet man, he didn't understand my world of school
activities. From age 14, he worked. And his dad, Albert, took the money my dad earned and used it to pay family
expenses.
I didn't really understand his world either: He was a livestock trucker, and I thought that I would surpass (超
过) anything he had accomplished by the time I walked across the stage at high school graduation.
Summers in the mid-70s were spent at home shooting baskets, hitting a baseball, or throwing a football,
preparing for my future as a quarterback on a football team. In poor weather, I read about sports or practiced my
trombone (长号).
The summer before my eighth grade I was one of a group of boys that a neighboring farmer hired to work in
his field. He explained our basic task, the tractor fired up and we were off, riding down the field looking for weeds
to spray with chemicals. After a short way, the farmer stopped and pointed at a weed which we missed. Then we
began again. This happened over and over, but we soon learned to identify different grasses like cockle burs,
lamb's-quarters, fox tails, and the king of weeds, the pretty purple thistle. It was tiring work, but I looked forward
to the pay, even though I wasn't sure how much it would amount to.
At home, my dad said, "A job's a big step to growing up. I'm glad you will be contributing to the household."
My dad's words made me realize that my earnings might not be mine to do with as I wished.
My labors lasted about two weeks, and the farmer said there might be more work, but I wasn't interested. I
decided it was not fair that I had to contribute my money.

Paragraph 1:The pay arrived at last
Paragraph 2:I understood immediately what my parents were worried about.
【范文赏析】
The pay arrived at last. Although the job was very tiring, I was very happy in my heart for I got something
from my work. The toil of labor was forgotten for the time being. I thought I should have my own money and
planned how to spend it. “How much money have you earned?” Dad asked. I was surprised, reluctant to say my
income. The next morning, my dad’s livestock truck started running. I saw my father’s hard-working figure and
thought of his words “A job’s a big step to growing up”.
I understood immediately what my parents were worried about. They were worried that I was too selfish to
give. I realized that my labor was very hard, but my growth and our whole family had been depending on the
hard work of my parents! Dad never complained about unfairness! He even seemed to think that was fair. I
thought, “I’ve only worked for two weeks, but how many years my father has worked!” In the evening, Dad came
back. I proudly took out my own money and handed it to Dad.

Ramu started a business with great enthusiasm but just after a few months his business went under. Time
passed but Ramu didn’t start any new work. His teacher got to know about his situation and called him to his home.
The teacher asked, “Why don’t you start some other work?”
Ramu replied, “I gave my everything to my business and yet it still failed.”
The teacher tried to comfort him, saying “But that’s life. Sometimes we get success and sometimes we don’t.
This doesn’t mean that we stop working.”
“What’s the point of doing work, when I can’t be sure of success?” Ramu replied with a bit of annoyance.
The teacher took Ramu to a room and showed him a dead tomato plant. Ramu was confused and said, “It’s
dead. Why are you showing it to me?”
The teacher replied, “When I sowed its seed, I did everything right for it. I watered it, fertilized it, sprayed it
with pesticide (杀虫剂) . I took great care of it but it still died.” He stopped for a while and then said, “Doing work
is the same... No matter how hard you try, you cannot decide what happens in the end. However, you can control
those things in your hands. Just do your best!”
Ramu asked, “But if there is no guarantee of success then what’s the use of doing anything?”
The teacher said, “You’d better not think like that...”
“What’s wrong with that... I have given so much hard work, so much money, so much time; if success is only a
matter of chance, then what is the use of doing so much?” said Ramu and he was about to leave.
Just then the teacher stopped him and said, “Before you leave, I want to show you one more thing.”

【答案】
He took Ramu to another room and opened the door. There was a pile of big red tomatoes lying there. Ramu
asked. “Why are you showing me this?” Just then the teacher said. “These tomatoes are the result of not giving up
on growing plants. Similarly, if you keep doing the right things, your chances of getting success are greatly
increased. But if you give up because of one or two failures, life will reward you with nothing.”
At that very moment, Ramu read the lesson of success. He understood what he had to do now and left with a
different idea. He conducted some market research and started a new business. No one could guarantee he would
succeed this time but there was a chance. Like Ramu, many people make their failure as a reason for not trying
further. It is true that no matter how hard we try, we cannot control the result. But it is also true that those who keep
trying to get success will get it tomorrow if not today. Every failure is a step toward success.

Jean’s dream was to be a great chef, so when she was 20, she travelled to France, which has the most famous
cuisine in the world, to learn to cook. After twelve years, she was among the best.
Her father, Bob, was getting old, and she wanted to be near him. Jean accepted an offer from one of
Washington’s top restaurants. The manager offered her a handsome salary, and 30% ownership of the restaurant.
The next day, Jean went to sign the contract. As she got out of the car, she caught sight of a green sunshade. Instead
of going to meet the manager, she crossed the street towards the old restaurant, Fargonetti’s. She pushed open the
door and the memories came flooding back.

“I’m not hungry, baby girl. I had a huge breakfast,” Bob said. “This is all for you!” “Oh,” Jean cried. “Daddy
was so silly! He’s been saving to come here for lunch for MONTHS and now he ruined his appetite with
breakfast!” The waiter, Carl Bader, immediately realised what was going on and went to Mr Fargonetti, the
restaurant owner, and told him about Jean and Bob.
An hour later, surprisingly, the waiter brought wonderful dishes and set them before the father and daughter.
“Lunch is on the house with Mr Fargoneti’s compliments (致意),” Carl said. For Bob and Jean, it was a free but
magical meal. They were on cloud nine when they walked out. “Jean,“ said Bob happily. “I feel our luck has
changed!” And it did! The next day, one of Bob’s old friends called and offered him a job at a new magazine, and
Jean believed Fargonetti’s had made it all happen. That was when she decided to become a chef!
Twenty years later, the old restaurant looked run-down and sad, but Jean recognised the waiter immediately.

passed away five years ago, and he left Carl the restaurant. Carl had promised he would keep it going, and he tried,
but it wasn’t that easy. Their chef left and the replacement was a disaster.
Jean was staring at Carl and a brilliant idea was taking shape in her mind. “I’m a chef. I’m Jean Earl,” she
said. “I’ll turn Fargonetti’s around! Let’s do it for Mr Fargonetti!” Carl’s mouth hung open. He knew Jean was
famous and was afraid he couldn’t afford her. However, Jean just wanted to help, asking for no pay. Jean turned

booked solid, with waiting lists of celebrity customers. A kind gesture can change a life and bring good things to

3.(2023年·全国·专题练习)阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
I needed to do something in my community (社区) in order to complete the community service hours
required to graduate from high school. Some of my friends had signed up to spend time at a soup kitchen, so I did,
too. It seemed like a good thing to do.
I thought that we would just be passing out dinners to those in need, but I found out we would be doing
everything from preparing to serving the dinner. We began preparing the food, from mixing salad dressing to
separating frozen meat. Much still needed to be done before dinner was served, but already outside the building
many homeless people were gathering. It wasn’t until a couple of hours later that we opened the doors and began
serving dinner.
As the line of people came toward me, I got a little scared. I’d come face to face with the homeless: How
should I act? How would they treat me? Would they hate me for having more than they did? While some of the
people looked very friendly, some of them looked so dangerous. I didn’t have too much time to worry about it. I
was assigned (分配) to serve the salad with the lady next to me. She smiled at me and said if I needed help, she’d
be right there, which I found quite comforting.
I had never seen so many people wanting food. They were of all ages and nationalities. Most of them wore
clothes that were torn and dirty. Some looked like they had tally given up on life, while others seemed to be
making the best of the situation, smiling and joking. Some were better off than others, but they all needed a good
meal and a warm place to eat. It saddened me to think of how many people there were who didn’t have a place to
call home and the only food they got came from a soup kitchen.

【答案】
As they came in my direction, I put on my brightest and happiest smile. I wanted to make them know that I
was really anxious to help them. To my relief, they smiled politely back at me when they saw my smile, and I could
see their exhaustion in their eyes. I wanted to know what they were going through and I was desperate to know
what I could do for them. They nodded gratefully as I pushed my spoon into the pot and took a large spoonful and
poured it into their bowls.
I was so happy that I had earned my service hours in this way. This experience made me realize that there are
so many people in this world who need our help. It also made me realize that our small act of kindness can make
them feel warm and make a great difference to them. I will never forget the way they looked at me when they were
given food. I am anxious to urge the world to do everything possible to help those in need.

My dad and I had been looking forward to the Stale cross-country race of my senior year of high school,
which would be the climax (顶点) of my existence.
I was the fastest runner on my team, and I was supposed to make it into the top fifteen. We had been working
towards this race for three years. It was everything to me, and it was everything to my dad. He was a runner and
was wild with joy by my success in running. He made it to every race, even flying home early from business trips
to see me run. I always listened for his voice, which rang above the crowd-telling me to relax my arms, calling out
my time. He pushed me. He cheered for me. He believed in me. We spent countless hours on the sandy canals of
Arizona. Breathing in the dust of the desert, the blossoms of the orange trees, and the terrible smell of the dairy
farm, we made our way across the city. We pounded miles and miles into our running shoes, marking with every
step the path to greatness. It was a journey that was just ours. A dream passed on from one generation to the next.
Then the big day came. It was hotter than normal - too hot. My throat felt like a field of cotton, cracked with
the summer heat, as I waited for the gun to fire. I gazed out at the crowd; dozens of familiar faces from church and
school flickered across my view. They had come for me. They were counting on me. I saw my dad set his watch,
worry and excitement etched across his face. With the sound of a gunshot, the race began.
For the first two and half miles, I felt great. I had never before been so ready for something. The weeks leading
up to the race were filled with hard practices and a strict diet. The scorching sun beat upon my back, blinding me更多全科试卷及资料,请关注公众号:高中试卷君

【答案】
However, without warning, my strength was running out. My lungs fought to take in enough air, and my feet
transformed into cement bricks. Neck and neck with one of my greatest rivals, I could see the finish line. I had
begun the final sprint into glory when my knees buckled and my legs gave way. Nothing I could do would make
them hold my weight. They were as weak as jelly. Even though I knew my dreams of victory had been destroyed, I
had to finish the race. With all of the strength left in me, I got on my hands and knees and crawled, inch by inch,
across the finish line. Shame pulsed through my veins as Dad squatted down and pulled me into his arms.
I whispered, “I’m so sorry I disappointed you, Dad.” He gave me a gentle smile and said, “You could never
disappoint me. Sometimes these things just happen. All that matters is that you did your best.” Lifting my face, I
saw my dad’s eyes, in which I saw the sweat, the time, and the work we had put into our dream. The miles we had
run together, all for this race, flashed across my mind. “But we worked so hard. What about our dream” I asked. In
that second, the world stood still. He reached over for my hand, holding back his own tears, and said, “Don’t you更多全科试卷及资料,请关注公众号:高中试卷君

My great-grandmother Eileen is fierce, loyal and strong and a bit of a legend in her lifetime, which now
stretches to 92 years. We’re not allowed to call her Gran, because it makes her feel old.
That summer, I lost my job and felt hopeless. One day, I visited her. She picked up a box. “There you go,” she
said. “You are good at these things, aren’t you?” It was a new phone. Her current mobile was ancient. I was
surprised it still worked.
“Yes, ”I said. “That’s why I ask you. Young people know more about such things than us oldies. You can take更多全科试卷及资料,请关注公众号:高中试卷君
it home and get it all set up,” she went on. “Then, when you bring it back, you can show me how to use it, such as
surfing the Internet, sending e-mails and so on.” She smiled so sweetly that I felt a surge of love for her.
I grabbed the box. Setting up the phone would be easy. It was teaching her how to use it that may prove
challenging. The following day I headed back to my great-grandmother’s with the phone.
“Here’s your phone. All ready to use.” For the next hour, I was busy setting up her passcode and fingerprint
recognition, which she said was like something out of James Bond.
She chose a picture for her screen and it was all going so well until I tried to show her how to swipe(滑动屏
幕). “Swipe?” she asked. She was 92, I reminded myself. This had been tiring for her.
She pressed at the up arrow and got angry when nothing happened. When I finally got her to swipe, she didn’t
put the right amount of pressure on and the menu slipped away. After what seemed like hours, she threw the phone
on the sofa. “Take it away!” she howled. “I want my old phone back!”
I picked up the phone and was about to leave to give her time to cool down when I realized I didn’t want to go
home when she was angry and upset.

【答案】
“Come on, Eileen. One more try.” I said. “No,” Eileen insisted, “I just want my old phone back!”, heading to
retrieve (拿回) her repaired device. Gathering my patience, I stepped forward, hugged my Gran and gently
explained that the old phone, just like an antique, was incapable of providing internet access or sending emails.
“Please let go off the old one, and embrace the brand-new world.” I encouraged her. Empowered by my words, she
mustered the courage to give it one more shot. Smoothly and magically, through the fingerprint recognition, this
time, she swiped with the right amount of pressure and located the email app on the menu.
Seeing this, I was not feeling hopeless any more. More surprisingly, a newly received e-mail blew me away, it
reading “Please let go off the old job, just embrace another new opportunity.” The knowing (会意的) chuckle from
my wise grandmother confirmed what I already knew deep down. The familiar yet powerful words lifted the weight
from my shoulders, motivating me to seek out a better career. How wise and strong my Gran was! The words kept
echoing in my mind ever since. Even now, I am constantly reminded of the transformative experience, where I got
the lesson— Out with the old, in with the new!
Possible Version 2
“Come on, Eileen. One more try.” I said. “You have been making progress, and I have distilled (提炼) some
skills from the former experience.” I added, in an attempt to calm her anger. Such praise seemed always to
stimulate people to further efforts. Although still frowning, grandma wasn’t resistant to trying again. This time, I
held her finger, with them poised (稳定) above the screen, and began to swipe. Despite some glitches (差错),
gradually, she achieved mastery — thrilled to send selfies (自拍) to her friends and even comment on videos on Tik
Tok. “Thank you so much my dear. You have done a superb job!” she praised me, with gratitude and ecstasy (狂
喜).
Seeing this, I was not feeling hopeless any more. Her little higher pitch (音调) and excitement inspired me.
Through the whole process of teaching, it struck me that if we were in a bind (身处困境), a show of temper did no
good. Instead, effort is the best antidote (解药) to sorrow. If the 92-year-old Eileen could overcome the difficulties
and embrace a new digital era, certainly so could I. No matter how bad the situation seemed, we should always
nourish (怀有) a hope in our mind. And the legendary woman fueled my dream — taking a deep breath of fresh air,
I believed there must be a more suitable job awaiting.
