My first year living in Los Angeles, I was a birthday-party clown (小丑). I struggled a lot with my identity
because, though I viewed myself as a filmmaker, everyone in my life viewed me as this ridiculous day job. To make
matters more confusing, being a clown is itself an identity-masking job. You wear makeup to cover your features.
Sometimes I’d have to wear a mask and completely cover my face.
For certain parties, I’d have to go as a specific character. The way that would work is someone from the
company would drop off costumes for me the night before a party at an appointed spot. It was like a shameful deal.
One night, they handed me my trash bag and said, “Tomorrow you’re going to be Batman.” Now, keep in mind
that at the time I had a giant moustache. I know: a clown with a moustache—that’s a huge red flag for parents. But I
hadn’t wanted to change my physical appearance for that job, because that would have been me subconsciously (下
意识地) admitting I was more of a clown than an artist, So for the party, I chose not to shave.
The next day, I went to the party. It was at this huge public park, and I had to leave my car parked far enough
away so that the kids couldn’t see me getting off my car. So I was all the way on the edge of the park, and the only
way for me to get to the party was to walk to it. Normally at these parties, all you have going for you is the element
of surprise. You pop in through the front door: “Surprise! Batman’s here!” All the kids go crazy. Without the
element of surprise, these visits are meaningless. So I thought, “Should I try to make an entrance (入场) for them?”更多全科试卷及资料,请关注公众号:高中试卷君
Reflecting what to do next, I heard a scream, “Look, a Batman with a moustache!” Suddenly, the entire party broke
out in laughter.

【答案】
I was so embarrassed and wanted to run back. But I had to complete my ridiculous task. After I ran into the
party, they were embarrassing me. I saw the birthday boy with his dad, who was laughing, and he said, “you see, I
told you, son. Batman has a moustache.” He took me to the huge birthday cake with a Batman drawn on it, and the
Batman had a moustache.
I stared at the cake with a clown wearing a moustache in disbelief. When initially bringing the cake out,
instead of just admitting that it was messed up, the parents tried to save face and said to the boy, “Batman always
has a moustache. He just shaves moustache it for movies.” In a surprising twist of fate, my moustache confirmed
what the parents had said and convinced the kids that I was actually Batman. Not shaving the moustache was a
correct thing. I was the hero that they needed.

to graduate from high school. Some of my friends had signed up to spend time at a soup kitchen, so I did, too. It
seemed like a good thing to do.
I thought that we would just be passing out dinners to those in need, but I found out we would be doing
everything from preparing to serving the dinner. We began preparing the food, from mixing salad dressing to
separating frozen meat. Much still needed to be done before dinner was served, but already outside the building
many homeless people were gathering. It wasn’t until a couple of hours later that we opened the doors and began
serving dinner.
As the line of people came toward me, I got a little scared. I’d come face to face with the homeless: How
should I act? How would they treat me? Would they hate me for having more than they did? While some of the
people looked very friendly, some of them looked so dangerous. I didn’t have too much time to worry about it. I
was assigned (分配) to serve the salad with the lady next to me. She smiled at me and said if I needed help, she’d
be right there, which I found quite comforting.
I had never seen so many people wanting food. They were of all ages and nationalities. Most of them wore
clothes that were torn and dirty. Some looked like they had tally given up on life, while others seemed to be making
the best of the situation, smiling and joking. Some were better off than others, but they all needed a good meal and
a warm place to eat. It saddened me to think of how many people there were who didn’t have a place to call home
and the only food they got came from a soup kitchen.

As they came in my direction, I put on my brightest and happiest smile. I wanted to make them know that I
was really anxious to help them. To my relief, they smiled politely back at me when they saw my smile, and I
could see their exhaustion in their eyes. I wanted to know what they were going through and I was desperate to
know what I could do for them. They nodded gratefully as I pushed my spoon into the pot and took a large spoonful
and poured it into their bowls.
I was so happy that I had earned my service hours in this way. This experience made me realize that there
are so many people in this world who need our help. It also made me realize that our small act of kindness can
make them feel warm and make a great difference to them. I will never forget the way they looked at me when they
were given food. I am anxious to urge the world to do everything possible to help those in need.更多全科试卷及资料,请关注公众号:高中试卷君

It was September 1966, and I was twenty years old, facing my first class of kids as a new teacher. My class in

and rough.
Like most new, young teachers, I was full of enthusiasm and determined to make a difference. Being so young,
I knew very little about parenting. However, I did recognize a child in need, and decided to see if I could make a
difference. And so my special “foster father (养父)” relationship with Mike began.
Each day as I arrived at school, I’d take Mike out for breakfast. Each noon hour as I shared my lunch with
him, I taught him some new skills — for a while we worked on the proper method of using a microscope. On
another day we constructed a camera, then we classified rocks. Mike would then “help” me teach these skills to the
rest of the class. We had a lot of fun, and a kind of unspoken trust began to build up between us.
Early in our special relationship, Mike told me of his dream — becoming a lawyer. I believed then, and after
thirty-four years of teaching I still believe, that all children have a gift. Everyone has the same opportunity to be the
best person they can be. I realized this boy was brilliant, and that with a little love, attention, understanding,
guidance and encouragement, he could probably accomplish whatever he put his mind to. I figured if he wanted to
be a lawyer, I would do all I could to help him become the very best lawyer he could be.
Every Saturday morning, I took Mike to the Osgoode Law Library, which was attached to the University of
Toronto. I explained to him that reading up on law was the only way to be a good lawyer. His young mind was
eager and interested.

【答案】
This was how we spent each Saturday morning for two years. Young though he was, he would cherish the
time, absorbing knowledge like a sponge. After our library session, I would bring him back to my office and give
him extra tuition, helping him catch up with the other children in class and even top most of the tests. Bit by bit,
Mike was no longer what he used to be. Everyone described him as energetic, warm-hearted and self-disciplined
when he graduated. For some reason, Mike left Toronto for another state with his grandmother while I switched to
another school soon and regretfully I lost his address accidentally.
One day, after we were out of touch for 30 years, there went my doorbell. I opened the door, only to find Mike,
the former street kid, standing there in his law office uniform. Along with him were his own teenage son and
daughter. His face lighted with joy, he gave me a warm hug, explained how he managed to get my address. Tears of
excitement and happiness filled my eyes. Listening to what he had achieved as a lawyer, I was so proud of him. He
thanked me for showing him the light and helping him fulfil his potential. That was another proud moment for me.

I should have been born with my fingers permanently glued to a keyboard. Since I was five, I’ve known that I
want to be a professional writer: a journalist, a novelist, a modernday Shakespeare, maybe. In my freshman year I
tried to figure out what A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Tragedy of Julius Caesar were about.
Macbeth was much easier to understand in my sophomore year (大二年级).
However, I’m practically addicted to books, whether I’m reading or writing them. I can’t go a single day
without writing something. I have made it a rule to pick up a pen and just let my thoughts out every day.
I can be inspired by anything: an expression, a song and a movie. Once I get inspired, it’s like the wheels
turning faster and faster as I think out one possible story after another.
My family is so widespread that whenever I meet with a cousin or an aunt I only vaguely (模糊地) remember;
I tell him or her I’m a writer because I know it will distinguish me from all the other kids in the family and make
me memorable. I told my relatives about the stories I used to write as a child, the projects I’m working on now, and
why I’m working so hard to make a breakthrough in the competitive world of publishing. One aunt hugged me and
told me, “Just don’t forget about the rest of us when you become the next J. K. Rowling.”
Smiling, I replied, “Don’t worry, I won’t.” I am confident that I will become the next J. K. Rowling. I have the
ambition, the means, and the talent. My English and history teachers don’t praise my writing and tell me I have an
innate (与生俱来的) writing talent even though they know how passionate I am about writing, and how that
passion slips through my fingertips to the paper.

【答案】
I don’t really know why I love writing so much. I just do. I always feel that there is something in my mind
about putting a story down on paper for friends across the globe to read and understand, and about finding just the
right words to describe what I can see so clearly in my head, which attracts me like a beautiful song. Writing makes
me who I am. Through writing I have found true happiness. Through writing I have found the value and meaning of
life.
Maybe I just want to leave my mark on the world since I can’t sing to create a great work of art.
Although I am a pretty good actor, acting doesn’t seem like the right path for me. So I’ve chosen writing to make a
breakthrough in this world. I am a novelist, journalist and graduate of Columbia University. How nice it sounds! As
a professional writer, I have more time and opportunities to create more characters, through which I can express
what is going on in my mind. That’s just what I want to leave behind.

Getting to watch surgery should be exciting for any medical student. But in my case, while two doctors were

leave. I didn’t belong there; I was only pretending to be there. The truth was that, halfway through university, I
knew I didn’t want to be a doctor. And I had to decide whether to keep lying to myself, or change my major.
Before university, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. Pd always wanted to study English but my
parents didn’t approve, saying there was no money in it. So I figured I’d just pick a career that looked well-paid,
satisfying, and would make my parents proud. “Doctor” is the first choice, so I decided to study medicine. I knew
all the coursework wouldn’t be easy, but I didn’t expect to find it as hard as I did. I spent many late nights and
weekends studying, but still didn’t get good grades. I just couldn’t keep the material in mind. By exam time, my
grades were terrible and I felt like a fool. I thought maybe a medical internship (实习医生的工作) would help raise
my spirits. Absurdly, my internship was where I realized how little I wanted to be a doctor.
Every day I’d just go into work and do exactly what I was told, go where I was told to go, and watch what I
was told to watch. And then I’d go home. It was fun whenever I got to play with expensive microscopes or watch
crazy surgery, but the rest of the time I struggled to get through the day. The other interns, however, practically

It wasn’t an easy decision. I had two choices—either keep lying to myself or do a different degree. Changing
my major would make the past two years of university a waste of time and money. But I realized that though I’d
hate myself for quitting, I’d hate myself more if I ended up being a terrible doctor. I was glad to move onto
something new, but I had to deal with my parents’ constant disappointment and complaining about my future.
Eventually, I changed my major to English writing and suddenly I found university enjoyable. I was still
studying late and through the weekend, but, this time, enjoying the pain. I’d spend hours perfecting a single

Mr. Maude was thinking about what to buy for his wife as a gift for their 10th wedding anniversary(周年纪念
日). One day, he happened to notice Mrs. Maude talking to a friend, showing interest in her ruby ring and he
realized he would be able to make Mrs. Maude happy if he bought one for her. Mr. Maude couldn’t understand why
ladies had so much passion for expensive stones of all colors, but he would be willing to do anything for his wife
for such a great occasion.
As SM is a famous jewelry brand(珠宝品牌), Mr. Maude decided to buy the ruby ring from their online store.
He found the store and contacted them. A lady at the customer service recommended one that she promised no lady
could refuse. It was worth $12,000. Of course, it would cost Mr. Maude an arm and a leg, but he thought Mrs.
Maude deserved it. Without much hesitation, Mr. Maude bought what the service lady recommended, expecting to
give his wife a big surprise. What he didn’t expect was that what he finally received from SM was more than a
surprise

the garden. Thinking that he needed to take a look at the real thing before he gave it to his wife, he took the parcel
to the bedroom and opened it. Inside the package, there was some wrapping bubble plastic sheets. When Mr.Maude
emptied the package, to his surprise, he found not one but two ring boxes. Inside each box, there was a ruby ring.
The two rings are only slightly different from each other. “This is obviously not supposed to be a buy-one-get-one-
for-free offer. Ruby rings are just too expensive for that. Most probably, this is a mistake of some kind,” Mr. Maude
said to himself.

the garden, Mr. Maude told her what had happened. Together, they decided to contact the service lady. The service
lady was shocked at what the couple told her and talked to her boss about the matter immediately. The boss got

couple agreed. The couple called the delivery service and sent the other ring back to the appointed address.
The day before the couple celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary, an unexpected parcel arrived from SM.
The couple didn’t place another order. “Could it be another mistake?” the couple wondered. With curiosity, Mr.
Maude opened the parcel and dug into the packing bubble sheets. He took out a ring box and a note, reading “We
hope this small gift can reach you in time for the anniversary celebration. This ring is not dear, but it’s specially
made for Mrs. Maude to express our appreciation for your honesty.” Mrs. Maude couldn’t be happier, because she
now had two rings for the anniversary, one for love, the other for honesty.

短文。
It was in 1959, one week before my 10th birthday, my mother announced we were taking a trip to Niagara
Falls when summer vacation started. Reservations had been made for a hotel and a Maid of the Mist Boat Tour trip.
It all sounded incredibly good until Mom said we would drive to Canada.
Driving in the car meant I’d share the back seat with my 3-year-old sister. “Sitting in the back seat all day is
dull,” I thought.
“Hey, can we take a plane there instead?” I asked between mouthfuls of hamburger and French fries.
“Sorry, honey, maybe next time,” my mother replied as she and my father exchanged glances.
“Dad, how long a ride is it to Canada?”
“It’s about nine hours, pal.”
This was an excellent chance to get one parent on my side. “That’s not fair to you, Dad. You’ll be too tired to
have fun after driving so much.” I crossed my fingers. “Then you’ll have to drive all the way home too! Being on a
plane would be very relaxing for you because you won’t be driving so much.”
My father smiled and patted my back. “Thanks for being so concerned, but I’ll be fine. No need to worry.”
Then he looked at my mother and winked.
Parents can be so frustrating. Didn’t they get it? I’m in desperate need of a plane ride, and I need something
cool to talk about with my friends when we get home. I lost control. “Sitting in the back seat of the car sucks,” I
blurted out, then rapidly covered my mouth with a hand to prevent any other forbidden words from escaping.
“Jay!” My mother shouted. “Watch your mouth!”
“I don’t want to hear that type of language again,” my father said, slapping the table angrily.
“Ok, sorry, but I really wanted to go by plane.”
“This conversation’s over.” My father said. “If you have finished eating, go to your room.”
On Saturday morning, We loaded all our luggage into the car.

【答案】
My father turned the key and started the engine. There I was, stuck in the back seat with no hope of having
great tales of adventure for my friends. The most exciting thing that might happen in the car would be my sister
throwing up in my lap. Not exactly the kind of story I’d want anyone to hear. I sighed with disappointment and
stared at the road ahead with a blank expression. Bored, I rolled down the window, spitting into the air to see how
far my saliva would travel. Suddenly, I noticed a large plane flying overhead. It looked as if it was coming in for a
landing.
Then I was surprised to see a sign that read “Airport Parking”. I couldn’t believe my eyes. We were heading
right into the airport! Why were we here? What was going on? Despite all my rapid-fire questions, I was told to
wait until we reached the terminal. It seemed to take forever for us to park and check in all our baggage. “Happy
Birthday, Jay,” my father said as he bent down to kiss my head. “We were planning this as a birthday present for
you all along,” my mother explained, “despite your bad language the other night.” Hearing this, I was overwhelmed
by a sense of guilt with tears of gratitude welling up in my eyes.
