It was a dream born in fire. Andrea Peterson was 5 when she was trapped on the ledge (窗台) of a burning
building.
“Throw the kid down!” said one of the firemen below, whose eyes are firm and courageous, along with
professional rescue techniques. Seeing this, little Andrea jumped into lifesaving arms and a life-long ambition: She
wanted to fight fires as her rescuers did.
She told that to the men who had saved her, and they laughed naturally the way grown-ups do when a kid says
he wants to be an astronaut or a sports star. But this was back in a time when little girls weren’t even allowed to
fantasize (幻想) about such grand goals.
“You’ll be a good mommy,” the firemen told her. “You’ll be a good teacher, maybe you’ll be a nurse, but you
can never be a fireman.”
Indeed, life sidelined her ambitious dream. She was studying for a degree in aviation technology (航空科技)
and that’s where she met her husband, Dennis. Unfortunately, Dennis was diagnosed with cancer. Peterson spent 31
years caring for the man she loved, and in 2007, when Dennis was about to leave, he was at peace but worried for
her. “But what are you going to do?” “I’ll be fine,” she told him.
At 61, she attended a course for emergencies. She went on an ambulance ride-along from time to time. It
turned out to be a life-and-death situation, which reminded her of the childhood experience back in the fire. But
every time she saw people who were in need were successfully rescued, Peterson felt that long-ago childhood
calling. She earned her emergency medical technician license and responded to fire calls with the ambulance. She
found that her years of tending to Dennis had prepared her for dealing with the variety of hurts and ills. The inside
calling echoed increasingly stronger.

To celebrate International Firefighters’ Day, a town’s special school for orphans held a special meet and
greeted with the local fire department. That year, the firemen had stopped a forest fire before it could reach houses
and buildings. The local newspaper celebrated their feat(功绩)with a front-page story.
The town’s firefighters came to the school dressed in uniform and answered all the kids’ questions. Captain
Joshua was the department leader and explained each team member’s role.
After the demonstration, the kids presented the firemen with drawings they had made in class. All of the
pictures were inspired by the firemen’s heroics.
A young boy named David approached Joshua with his drawing. Joshua noticed that the young boy had a
birthmark in the same spot as his burn mark.
“Nice drawing, little man. Hey, I guess we’re kind of the same,” Joshua told him while pointing at his burn
mark. David blushed and smiled. The young boy had another request for Joshua but was too shy to ask at first.
David turned to his teacher, Mrs Humphries, for approval, and she gave him a thumbs up.
“Would it be all right if I came to the fire station to see all the equipment and look at the trucks?” David asked
timidly. The young boy explained that he dreamed of one day becoming a fireman, which is why he wanted to learn更多全科试卷及资料,请关注公众号:高中试卷君
as much as possible.
Captain Joshua told David he would be happy to give the tour, but only if Mrs Humphries agreed. “I’d be
happy to accompany you and David on a tour of the station, but there is some- thing you should know, ” Mrs
Humphries told the captain.
While watching the young boy playing with his friends, the teacher took a deep breath before saying, “The
reason why he’s so obsessed(着迷的)with firemen is that he lost his parents in a fire. ” Captain Joshua decided that
the trip would be beneficial for David and agreed to the tour.

The Wiggles, my girl Nayvah’s favorite show, played on the TV, she screamed out in excitement and started
dancing along to the songs. Little Nayvah, nearly two, has a big personality and sense of curiosity!
A week later, me, Nayvah and my son, Leo, four, headed over to my friend Kacie’s place —— a ten-minute
drive from our house.更多全科试卷及资料,请关注公众号:高中试卷君
My babies were excited to play with Kacie’s children Tyler, ten, and Nevaeh, eight. While the kids played,
Kacie and I chatted in the backyard. As we talked, Kacie took the grate (炉排) off the drain (排水沟) that was next
to the back door and poured some drain cleaner down it. “We’ve had blocked drains,” she said.
Hours later, as the sun began to set, I sat with the kids in the backyard while Kacie cooked carbonara for
dinner. “Sammy! Can you come here and taste the sauce?” Kacie called out. The kids were happily playing, so I
ducked inside. Less than a minute later, after trying the sauce, I went back out.
That’s when I saw Nayvah with her left leg stuck in the drain. My girl didn’t seem upset and, at first, I thought
it was quite cute. “Kacie! Kids! Look at this!” I shouted out. “Oh no! I forgot to put the grate back on,” said Kacie.
We all let out a little laugh, and Kacie and I tried to gently pull Nayvah out.
But her ankle was completely stuck. My heart sank. “Kacie, call Triple-0!” I said. I lay down next to Nayvah
— who was still calm — and told her everything was going to be okay. “I’m here, Nay Nay Nay,” I comforted her.
When two fire trucks and an ambulance soon arrived, I burst into tears. It felt so serious. The firemen tried a
few techniques to pull her out. Nothing worked. One fireman, named Shamus, decided to entertain my little girl to
keep her calm.

The young mother stared down at her son who was seriously ill. Although her heart was filled with sadness,
she also had a strong feeling of determination. Like any other parents, she wanted her son to grow up and fulfill all
his dreams with ease though that might be impossible.
But she still wanted her son's dreams to come true. She took her son's hand and asked,
“Billy, have you ever thought about what you would be if you grew up? Have you ever wished what you
would do with your life?"" Mommy, I always want to be a fireman when I grow up." The mother smiled back and
said," Let's see if we can make your wish come true." Later that day, she went to her local fire department, where
she met Fireman Bob, who had a heart as big as the sea.
She explained her son's last wish and asked if it might be possible to give her six-year-old son a ride around
the block on a fire engine. Fireman Bob said," Look, we can do better than that. If you'll have your son ready at
seven o clock on Wednesday morning, we'll make him an honorary fireman for the whole day. He can come down
to the fire station, eat with us, go out on all the fire calls! And if you'll give us his sizes, we'll get a real fire uniform
for him, with a real fire hat."
Three days later, Fireman Bob picked up Billy, dressed him in the fire uniform and took him from his hospital
bed to the ladder truck. Billy got to sit on the back of the truck and help guide it back to the fire station.
They finally reached the fire department. The firemen, with all the love and attention given to him, led Billy to
be a good fireman all day. And finally the little boy got the hat with the symbol of the Fire Department on it.

The young boy explained that he dreamed of one day becoming a fireman, which was why he wanted to learn as

dangerous fire took his parents from him at a young age.” Hearing this, Joshua decided that the trip would be
beneficial for David and agreed to the tour.
That Saturday morning, Joshua showed Mrs. Humphries and David around the fire department. David was
smiling from ear to ear. The three had hot dogs at the station. “I want to be a fireman to save many lives so that
children don’t have to be sad. I want to be just like you when I grow up,” David said to Joshua before saying
goodbye to him.

The Littlest Firefighter
The 26-year-old mother stared down at her son who was dying of terminal leukemia (白血病). Although her
heart was filled with sadness, she also had a strong feeling of determination. Like any parent she wanted her son to
grow up and fulfill all his dreams. Now that was no longer possible. The leukemia would see to that.
But she still wanted her son’s dreams to come true. She took her sons hand and asked, “Bopsy, did you ever
think about what you wanted to be once you grew up? Did you ever dream and wish what you would do with your
life?”
“Mommy, I always wanted to be a fireman when I grew up,” Mom smiled back and said, “Let’s see if we can
make your wish come true.”
Later that day she went to her local fire department in Phoenix, Arizona, where she met Fireman Bob, who had
a heart as big as Phoenix. She explained her son’s final wish and asked if it might be possible to give her six-year-
old son a ride around the block on a fire engine.
Fireman Bob said, “Look, we can do better than that. If you’ll have your son ready at seven o'clock
Wednesday morning, we’ll make him an honorary fireman for the whole day. He can comedown to the fire station,
eat with us, go out on all the fire calls, the whole nine yards!” And if you'll give us his sizes, we’ll get a real fire
uniform for him, with a real fire hat—not a toy one—with the emblem of the Phoenix Fire Department on it, a
yellow slicker like we wear and rubber boots. They’re all manufactured right here in Phoenix, so we can get them
fast.
Paragraph 1: Three days later Fireman Bob picked up Billy and dressed him in his fire uniform.
Paragraph 2: With all the love and attention, Billy’s dream finally came true.

As I was packing up, I noticed my colleague had left his laptop bag in my office. Since he was already home, I
decided to bring it to him. It was 4:30 p. m. The snow wasn’t supposed to start until later according to the previous
warning, but just to be safe, I decided to use the country roads near his home instead of the highway, which could
fast become a skating rink (滑冰场).
After I dropped off the laptop case and got right back on the road, the snow started. Within minutes I was in a
whiteout. I rolled down my window, thinking I could follow the edge of the road and keep to a straight line. But
really, I hadn’t a clue where I was or even which side of the road I was on. I had to stop because I was afraid of
driving into a farmer’s field, or worse. I called 911, only to be told that nobody was coming to get me until morning
at the earliest.
Those seconds after the call were the worst of my life. Getting out to walk in a whiteout and high winds when
it was -10°C wasn’t an option. So I texted my colleague whose laptop bag I had just returned. I joked about my
good deed ending in disaster. But he had an idea. “Pin your location on Google Maps and send it to me,” he said.
I did, and soon he texted me back a screenshot of the satellite view of where I was. We figured out that I was
on a road in between two farms. I posted this new information to my Facebook community group, pleading (恳求)
for anyone who knew someone living here to help me get rescued.
Soon enough, people started responding on my post. I got a message from someone who was going to put me
in touch with the family living there. At 8 p. m., my mobile phone rang. It was the son of the farmer who owned the
land beside the road I was stranded (使滞留) on. He told me that his dad was coming to get me!
Then, about 45 minutes later, I saw a tall figure walking toward me in the dark, carrying a flashlight.

Steven Lippoth was an experienced fisherman who had been fishing on the sea for many years. He had更多全科试卷及资料,请关注公众号:高中试卷君
planned on taking an 8-hour deep-sea fishing, which would (hopefully) harvest marlins and sailfish to land him a
large amount of money. In his fishing village, the competition was high and Steven Lippoth was hoping to bring
back enough fish.
Early in the morning, Steven Lippoth set out on a 24-foot boat with a small motor. Onboard were various
fishing tools, a portable electronic radio, and a large icebox to hold the fish. The journey seemed like it would be as
easy as he had hoped. Before long he had caught over 500 pounds of fish, almost overloading his icebox.
However, A few hours later, the journey took a turn for the worse. The sky was suddenly covered with dark
clouds and in less than two minutes a terrible storm struck. A huge wave shook his boat violently. Steven Lippoth
attempted to steer (驾驶) the boat back toward the coast, but it was impossible to see where the coast was in the
rain. Frightened and shocked, he tried to keep the balance of the boat in order not to be overturned and thrown into
the sea. When the storm finally cleared, Steven Lippoth was able to assess the damage. His motor was gone, the
fishing net was damaged, and most of the portable electronics were damaged. There was enough power in the radio
for Steven Lippoth to send a Mayday message to the coast guard, but it died before his location could be confirmed.
The canvas (帆布) that was used to cover the icebox was torn. What made him a little relieved was that his fish
were still there
Would the coast guard find him? What would happen if he had to spend the night on the sea? What should he
do? He wondered. “I’m on my own now.” Steven Lippoth said to himself calmly.

The snowstorm was supposed to hit the evening of Monday, Jan. 31, 2022. I was working from home, but I
had to leave that afternoon and go to my office at First Nations University in Regina, Saskatchewan, so I could sign
an emergency financial aid check for a student. As director of finance, I wanted to get it to him as soon as possible,
snowstorm or not. Besides, I wasn’t worried. I figured I had more than enough time to make it to the office and get
back home.
The route to the university takes about 30 minutes along the Trans-Canada Highway. After I finished my work,
it was just past 4:30 p. m. I started heading back home.
Not soon after I left office, the snow started and it was coming down fast. Within minutes I was in a whiteout.
The storm was a “snownado,” or what the TV meteorologists call a Saskatchewan screamer, because it comes in
fast and so windy that it screams.
The road condition was horrible, forcing me to slow down. The windows were fogging up and getting covered
with snow, so I rolled down my driver’s side window, thinking I could better follow the edge of the road and keep
to a straight line. But really, I didn’t have a clue where I was or even which side of the road I was on. At one point, I
don’t know exactly when, I stopped because I was afraid of driving into a farmer’s field. The Trans-Canada
Highway was in between two farms, each 500 yards away, I remember. I kept the car running to stay warm and
called 911. They told me to sit tight and wait things out for the night, saying nobody was coming to get me until
morning, at the earliest. It was now 6:30 p.m., I had to do something for help.

Braving the Waters
Joel Boyers and his wife Melody Among were heading home from the Nashville airport. Among had just
earned her helicopter pilot’s licence when Boyers received a call from a stranger. The caller told him that her
brother and his two daughters were trapped on their roof in Waverly, 60 miles from Nashville. They were
surrounded by rising floodwaters caused by the heaviest rainfall that year.
Desperate, the caller begged, “Could you please, please rescue my loved ones?”
Boyers, 41, looked at the address the caller mentioned while glancing at the storm clouds. “Ma’am,” he said,
“no one will fly in this weather ...” But even before he finished the sentence, Boyers knew they would go back up.
“I’ve got a daughter myself,” Boyers says. “I’ll see what I can do.” He put the brother’s address into his phone and
