专题 16 爱心消防员+雨雪救助
【热点押题】
1.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was a dream born in fire. Andrea Peterson was 5 when she was trapped on the ledge (窗台) of a burning
building.
“Throw the kid down!” said one of the firemen below, whose eyes are firm and courageous, along with
professional rescue techniques. Seeing this, little Andrea jumped into lifesaving arms and a life-long ambition: She
wanted to fight fires as her rescuers did.
She told that to the men who had saved her, and they laughed naturally the way grown-ups do when a kid says
he wants to be an astronaut or a sports star. But this was back in a time when little girls weren’t even allowed to
fantasize (幻想) about such grand goals.
“You’ll be a good mommy,” the firemen told her. “You’ll be a good teacher, maybe you’ll be a nurse, but you
can never be a fireman.”
Indeed, life sidelined her ambitious dream. She was studying for a degree in aviation technology (航空科技)
and that’s where she met her husband, Dennis. Unfortunately, Dennis was diagnosed with cancer. Peterson spent 31
years caring for the man she loved, and in 2007, when Dennis was about to leave, he was at peace but worried for
her. “But what are you going to do?” “I’ll be fine,” she told him.
At 61, she attended a course for emergencies. She went on an ambulance ride-along from time to time. It
turned out to be a life-and-death situation, which reminded her of the childhood experience back in the fire. But
every time she saw people who were in need were successfully rescued, Peterson felt that long-ago childhood
calling. She earned her emergency medical technician license and responded to fire calls with the ambulance. She
found that her years of tending to Dennis had prepared her for dealing with the variety of hurts and ills. The inside
calling echoed increasingly stronger.

【答案】
After a year, she signed up for a training unit for firefighters. No sooner had she stepped into the training
venue than she found all her classmates were 18-22 young kids. “Could I really make it?” Peterson thought to
herself, struggling. At the very moment, she was once again thought of the firm and courageous eyes of the
firefighters who came to rescue her over 50 years ago. She instantly rolled up her sleeves and began to learn both
theoretical and practical knowledge as her much younger peers.
Finally came the written and physical fitness test day. For Peterson, she was at an advantageous situation for
the theoretical part, as her past rescue experiences on ambulance ride-along made her a qualified rescuer already.
However, the 3-km running, push-ups, sit-ups, etc. all behaved as huge gaps awaiting her to conquer. Though she
ranked the last among such items, her persistence, endurance as well as the passion for a childhood dream made her
name appear on the list of newly-announced firefighters. This time, tears blurred her eyes, as the dream born in the
fire was eventually fulfilled.

To celebrate International Firefighters’ Day, a town’s special school for orphans held a special meet and
greeted with the local fire department. That year, the firemen had stopped a forest fire before it could reach houses
and buildings. The local newspaper celebrated their feat(功绩)with a front-page story.
The town’s firefighters came to the school dressed in uniform and answered all the kids’ questions. Captain
Joshua was the department leader and explained each team member’s role.
After the demonstration, the kids presented the firemen with drawings they had made in class. All of the
pictures were inspired by the firemen’s heroics.
A young boy named David approached Joshua with his drawing. Joshua noticed that the young boy had a
birthmark in the same spot as his burn mark.
“Nice drawing, little man. Hey, I guess we’re kind of the same,” Joshua told him while pointing at his burn
mark. David blushed and smiled. The young boy had another request for Joshua but was too shy to ask at first.更多全科试卷及资料,请关注公众号:高中试卷君
David turned to his teacher, Mrs Humphries, for approval, and she gave him a thumbs up.
“Would it be all right if I came to the fire station to see all the equipment and look at the trucks?” David asked
timidly. The young boy explained that he dreamed of one day becoming a fireman, which is why he wanted to learn
as much as possible.
Captain Joshua told David he would be happy to give the tour, but only if Mrs Humphries agreed. “I’d be
happy to accompany you and David on a tour of the station, but there is some- thing you should know, ” Mrs
Humphries told the captain.
While watching the young boy playing with his friends, the teacher took a deep breath before saying, “The
reason why he’s so obsessed(着迷的)with firemen is that he lost his parents in a fire. ” Captain Joshua decided that
the trip would be beneficial for David and agreed to the tour.

David and said goodbye to them for the day.
22 years later, retired Joshua was at home when a fire broke out in his basement. Joshua and his wife were left
trapped in the fire. They called 911 and within ten minutes, firefighters arrived. Firemen carried Joshua and his wife
out of the burning house. They laid them down to receive medical attention. But before one of the firemen left

The Wiggles, my girl Nayvah’s favorite show, played on the TV, she screamed out in excitement and started
dancing along to the songs. Little Nayvah, nearly two, has a big personality and sense of curiosity!
A week later, me, Nayvah and my son, Leo, four, headed over to my friend Kacie’s place —— a ten-minute
drive from our house.
My babies were excited to play with Kacie’s children Tyler, ten, and Nevaeh, eight. While the kids played,
Kacie and I chatted in the backyard. As we talked, Kacie took the grate (炉排) off the drain (排水沟) that was next
to the back door and poured some drain cleaner down it. “We’ve had blocked drains,” she said.
Hours later, as the sun began to set, I sat with the kids in the backyard while Kacie cooked carbonara for
dinner. “Sammy! Can you come here and taste the sauce?” Kacie called out. The kids were happily playing, so I
ducked inside. Less than a minute later, after trying the sauce, I went back out.
That’s when I saw Nayvah with her left leg stuck in the drain. My girl didn’t seem upset and, at first, I thought
it was quite cute. “Kacie! Kids! Look at this!” I shouted out. “Oh no! I forgot to put the grate back on,” said Kacie.
We all let out a little laugh, and Kacie and I tried to gently pull Nayvah out.
But her ankle was completely stuck. My heart sank. “Kacie, call Triple-0!” I said. I lay down next to Nayvah
— who was still calm — and told her everything was going to be okay. “I’m here, Nay Nay Nay,” I comforted her.
When two fire trucks and an ambulance soon arrived, I burst into tears. It felt so serious. The firemen tried a
few techniques to pull her out. Nothing worked. One fireman, named Shamus, decided to entertain my little girl to
keep her calm.

“What’s her favorite TV show?” he asked me. “The Wiggles!” I replied quickly. Shamus played “Rock-A-Bye
Your Bear” from his phone as the firemen set up shields around my girl to protect her. They then broke the
pavement and the concrete pipe so they could ease her out. She had fun watching as the firemen sang along. In less
than an hour, my brave girl was free! I thanked the amazing firemen from the bottom of my heart.
A few days later, I shared the story on TV and Nayvah received a special recorded message from the Wiggles
star, Simon! He said Nayvah was a very brave little girl and he was happy The Wiggles helped her to keep calm
when her leg was stuck. Simon also invited us and the firemen backstage for a private show at a concert that was
coming up. Two weeks later, Nayvah watched them perform live. She was so happy, and couldn’t keep her eyes off
the colorful crew. It’s funny to think that if Nayvah had managed to ‘wiggle’ free, she’d never have met her heroes!

The young mother stared down at her son who was seriously ill. Although her heart was filled with sadness,
she also had a strong feeling of determination. Like any other parents, she wanted her son to grow up and fulfill all
his dreams with ease though that might be impossible.
But she still wanted her son's dreams to come true. She took her son's hand and asked,

said," Let's see if we can make your wish come true." Later that day, she went to her local fire department, where
she met Fireman Bob, who had a heart as big as the sea.

A miracle (奇迹) seemed to be happening. After months of careful treatment, the doctor and the mother
found Billy was getting better. Finally, the boy fully recovered, and the doctor informed them that they could leave
hospital the next day. The mother thought the miracle of her son's recovery was partly the result of the firemen' s

hospital. The firemen felt happy for this. They decided to give the boy a big surprise.
The firefighters decided to hold a fire escape and rescue the boy from the window. The next day, with the
hospital's permission, the fire truck drove into the hospital. They put up a ladder outside the window of the boy's
room. When the mother opened the window in time, a fireman jumped in and said," Dear little fireman,

trapped in a fire." Pleasantly surprised, the boy left hospital through the window.

Paragraph 1: Three days later Fireman Bob picked up Billy and dressed him in his fire uniform.
Paragraph 2: With all the love and attention, Billy’s dream finally came true.
【答案】
Three days later Fireman Bob picked up Billy and dressed him in his fire uniform. They took him from his
hospital bed to the fire station. There were three fire calls in Phoenix that day and Bill got to go out on all three
calls. He rode in the different fire engines, the paramedic’s van and even the fire chief’s car. He was also video
taped for the local news program.
With all the love and attention, Billy’s dream finally came true. Billy was so deeply touched that he lived three
months longer than any doctor thought possible. On his last day, firefighters went into Billy’s room. They hugged
him and told him how much they loved him. With his dying breath Billy looked up at the fire chief and said,
”Chief, am I really a fireman now?” “Billy, you are”, the chief said. With those words, Billy smiled and closed his
eyes one last time.

As I was packing up, I noticed my colleague had left his laptop bag in my office. Since he was already home, I
decided to bring it to him. It was 4:30 p. m. The snow wasn’t supposed to start until later according to the previous
warning, but just to be safe, I decided to use the country roads near his home instead of the highway, which could
fast become a skating rink (滑冰场).

whiteout. I rolled down my window, thinking I could follow the edge of the road and keep to a straight line. But
really, I hadn’t a clue where I was or even which side of the road I was on. I had to stop because I was afraid of
driving into a farmer’s field, or worse. I called 911, only to be told that nobody was coming to get me until morning
at the earliest.
Those seconds after the call were the worst of my life. Getting out to walk in a whiteout and high winds when
it was -10°C wasn’t an option. So I texted my colleague whose laptop bag I had just returned. I joked about my
good deed ending in disaster. But he had an idea. “Pin your location on Google Maps and send it to me,” he said.
I did, and soon he texted me back a screenshot of the satellite view of where I was. We figured out that I was
on a road in between two farms. I posted this new information to my Facebook community group, pleading (恳求)
for anyone who knew someone living here to help me get rescued.
Soon enough, people started responding on my post. I got a message from someone who was going to put me
in touch with the family living there. At 8 p. m., my mobile phone rang. It was the son of the farmer who owned the
land beside the road I was stranded (使滞留) on. He told me that his dad was coming to get me!
Then, about 45 minutes later, I saw a tall figure walking toward me in the dark, carrying a flashlight.

【答案】
Then, about 45 minutes later, I saw a tall figure in a yellow raincoat striding toward me in the dark, carrying a
flashlight. How relieved I was to see him! It was André, who’d walked through the storm to find me, fighting the
wind and snow each step of the way. He asked me to follow him in the car and told me with a steady voice that I
would be OK. He turned around and started to trudge through the snow, sure of the direction. I drove slowly behind
him, feeling my heart begin to beat more slowly. When we reached the house a few minutes later, I got out of the
car and burst into tears, all my fears turning into relief and gratitude.

another two families stranded on the road. We all spent a warm night in a stranger’s house. The next morning,
André cleared the snow from his driveway enough that we could all get out and drive home. The experience gave
me a new perspective, letting me approach challenges and surprises with a sense of calm. It reminded me to always
reach out and help others—both friends and strangers. But best of all, it brought André into my life. We’re still in
touch, and I know we’ll be friends forever.

large amount of money. In his fishing village, the competition was high and Steven Lippoth was hoping to bring
back enough fish.
Early in the morning, Steven Lippoth set out on a 24-foot boat with a small motor. Onboard were various
fishing tools, a portable electronic radio, and a large icebox to hold the fish. The journey seemed like it would be as
easy as he had hoped. Before long he had caught over 500 pounds of fish, almost overloading his icebox.
However, A few hours later, the journey took a turn for the worse. The sky was suddenly covered with dark
clouds and in less than two minutes a terrible storm struck. A huge wave shook his boat violently. Steven Lippoth
attempted to steer (驾驶) the boat back toward the coast, but it was impossible to see where the coast was in the
rain. Frightened and shocked, he tried to keep the balance of the boat in order not to be overturned and thrown into
the sea. When the storm finally cleared, Steven Lippoth was able to assess the damage. His motor was gone, the
fishing net was damaged, and most of the portable electronics were damaged. There was enough power in the radio
for Steven Lippoth to send a Mayday message to the coast guard, but it died before his location could be confirmed.
The canvas (帆布) that was used to cover the icebox was torn. What made him a little relieved was that his fish
were still there
Would the coast guard find him? What would happen if he had to spend the night on the sea? What should he
do? He wondered. “I’m on my own now.” Steven Lippoth said to himself calmly.

【答案】
Night fell, it became colder and colder. The cold moonlight cast a pale glow over the sea. The icy sea spray
crept down his neck and a chilly wind swept his body. Steven Lippoth couldn’t help shivering. Being an
experienced fisherman, he knew he should try to use anything that he could to keep himself warm. He wrapped
himself with the torn canvas, crouching in the corner to avoid the wind. Some terrible thoughts once flashed
through his mind, but looking at the fish he had harvested, he felt a sense of comfort. “It is only one night, and the
coast guard will find me sooner or later.” Steven Lippoth murmured and fell asleep.
The next morning, the sound of a coastguard ship woke him up. Steven Lippoth sprang to his feet and waved
his hands wildly at the ship, calling out with all his strength with his voice trembling. A few minutes later, the guard
arrived and pulled him to the board with great care. It was at this moment that Steven Lippoth burst into tears. He
repeatedly expressed his deepest gratitude to the coast guard. The guards were shocked to find Steven safe and
sound considering how terrible the storm was yesterday. Only Steven Lippoth knew it was his sensible action and
positive attitude that saved him.

The snowstorm was supposed to hit the evening of Monday, Jan. 31, 2022. I was working from home, but I
had to leave that afternoon and go to my office at First Nations University in Regina, Saskatchewan, so I could sign
an emergency financial aid check for a student. As director of finance, I wanted to get it to him as soon as possible,
snowstorm or not. Besides, I wasn’t worried. I figured I had more than enough time to make it to the office and get
back home.
The route to the university takes about 30 minutes along the Trans-Canada Highway. After I finished my work,
it was just past 4:30 p. m. I started heading back home.
Not soon after I left office, the snow started and it was coming down fast. Within minutes I was in a whiteout.
The storm was a “snownado,” or what the TV meteorologists call a Saskatchewan screamer, because it comes in
fast and so windy that it screams.
The road condition was horrible, forcing me to slow down. The windows were fogging up and getting covered
with snow, so I rolled down my driver’s side window, thinking I could better follow the edge of the road and keep
to a straight line. But really, I didn’t have a clue where I was or even which side of the road I was on. At one point, I
don’t know exactly when, I stopped because I was afraid of driving into a farmer’s field. The Trans-Canada
Highway was in between two farms, each 500 yards away, I remember. I kept the car running to stay warm and

【答案】
I posted my situation onto my Facebook, hoping anyone might read it and help. The responses from a few
local friends and even strangers were overwhelming, all of whom were deeply concerned about my safety and
offering assistance. One friend in particular, who lived a few miles away, said he would try to reach out to nearby
farmers. My phone’s battery was running low, so I used it sparingly, updating those who were trying to coordinate a
rescue and praying that someone could reach me before the night got even colder.
“I can’t drive,” the old farmer replied, “I walked here after my son phoned me about everything.” Despite my
astonishment at how he braved the storm on foot, I felt an overwhelming relief knowing I wasn’t alone anymore.
There were hundreds of people standing behind me and acting as my strongest bedrock. The farmer, with years of
experience and expertise in dealing with blizzards, guided me to his home, where his family welcomed me with
open arms and a warm meal. Wrapped in the kindness of these strangers (now friends), I waited out the tempest,
snug within their farmhouse until the morning rescue crews could finally excavate my car from the grips of the
snowdrifts.

Braving the Waters
Joel Boyers and his wife Melody Among were heading home from the Nashville airport. Among had just
earned her helicopter pilot’s licence when Boyers received a call from a stranger. The caller told him that her
brother and his two daughters were trapped on their roof in Waverly, 60 miles from Nashville. They were
surrounded by rising floodwaters caused by the heaviest rainfall that year.
Desperate, the caller begged, “Could you please, please rescue my loved ones?”
Boyers, 41, looked at the address the caller mentioned while glancing at the storm clouds. “Ma’am,” he said,更多全科试卷及资料,请关注公众号:高中试卷君
“no one will fly in this weather ...” But even before he finished the sentence, Boyers knew they would go back up.
“I’ve got a daughter myself,” Boyers says. “I’ll see what I can do.” He put the brother’s address into his phone and
they drove back to the airport.
Before long they were in the air, unprepared for what they were about to see. It was nothing but raging water
below them. There were two houses on fire. Cars in trees. Tons of debris (残骸). No one was going to be able to
swim in that.
The flooding also took out cell phone service, meaning that Boyers couldn’t use his phone to pinpoint (精确定
位) the house he was looking for. He flew on regardless.
As Boyers controlled the helicopter, Among began searching for people caught out on rooftops, bridges —
anywhere they could land and get them on board. Suddenly, she saw a teenager trapped in a tree. The teen, soaking
wet and exhausted, was barely out of the water. Since there was no place to land, Boyers lowered the helicopter
until it approached to just above the water line. Among jumped out and swam to the tree, where she helped the teen
into the helicopter. The teen was shaking and looking behind anxiously when she said, “Thank you so much, but
my sister and uncle ... please help them ...”
Boyers dropped off the teen on a patch of land across the street. Then he and Among were back in the air.
